Are there any modern x87 benchmarks? Just out of curiosity. Posted: 19 Jun 2021 12:51 PM PDT For those that wonder "who still uses that?", about a decade ago, Bethesda wrote a game that performs all of the floating point computations using x87: https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/bethesda-most-embarassing-cpu-optimization-of-the-decade-gaming.356110/ For context of how old x87 is, MMX was introduced in 1997 (later superseded by SSE). There was later a mod that replaced some of the x87 coding for ~50% FPS increase. At a previous workplace, I don't know what CPU instruction sets some of the legacy in-house software use, but they did require ActiveX and IE6. We had computers with Windows XP virtual machines for those software because the company won't pay up to have new software written. We also used IBM Lotus Notes (now HCL Notes after IBM sold their software to HCL), and given how some of its UI design choices date back to the 1980's/1990's, I would not be surprised if some of its back-end coding was equally old. One of the biggest annoyances was that each person's Lotus Notes account was tied to a specific computer, so you couldn't log in to check your email from another computer or using your phone. And for those that say "just rewrite the old software", South Korea stopped mandating the requirement to use ActiveX just last year: https://www.theregister.com/2020/12/10/south_korea_activex_certs_dead/ An article from 2016 showed how bad the situation was: https://www.forbes.com/sites/elaineramirez/2016/11/30/south-koreas-online-banking-system-is-stuck-in-1996/?sh=30776eed527c EDIT: I should have rephrased the title to be "x87 performance comparisons between different CPUs".
