This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I bought three LG 27GL83A-B 27 Inch monitors on Amazon but in the Windows Advanced Display Settings two show up as, "LG ULTRAGEAR" and one of them show up as, "27GL850". Should I be returning any of them for new ones? The refresh rate is slightly different.

PC Build noob here. Please verify my final list of components

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:12 AM PDT

Edit: Inserted prices on a kind suggestion from one of the commenters.

Hi, PC Build Noob here. I am building a PC and have finalized below components. Can somebody confirm the compatibility of below parts? or if you would recommend an alternate part if I have selected poor quality parts?

All prices mentioned are in USD but I would be sourcing it in my local currency (Prices over here vary in a different fashion)

    CPU: Ryzen 3 3200G Price: USD 145

    MOBO: Asus Prime A320M - K: USD 54

    RAM: Hyperx Fury DDR4 3200mhz 8gbx1 USD 56

PU: COOLER MASTER MWE 550 V2: USD 48

    SSD: Kingston A2000 500 gb M.2 SSD: USD 65

HD: Seagate Barracuda 5400 rpm 2 TB: USD 60

WiFI: TP-Link AC1200 Wireless WiFi PCIe Card: USD 30

Case: Ant Esports ICE-200TG Mid Tower: USD 38

    Does the motherboard have enough ports for everything? (I have checked, it has M.2, PCIe 3 x 1, PCIe 2 x 2, Sata III x 4, Air cooling: 4-Pin CPU x1, 4-Pin System x 1)

Are all parts compatible? I believe Case has RGB fan and front led light and Mobo doesn't have a RGB header, so will RGB of cooling fan won't work? or it will work without lighting? Can you recommend a cheap controller?

I would like to put some rgb but it is not a priority (I do not wanna spend too much), any recommendations?

Naming your PC, does anyone here do it?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:26 AM PDT

Ever since I got my first laptop, I always named all of my computers after Disney characters. Just wondered if anyone else does that sort of thing?

My first ever PC was an HP Stream 13 laptop I called Flash, as it was very slow and the only games they could run well were mostly flash games.

My first gaming PC (Second PC I owned) was an HP OMEN I called NEMO, as it's OMEN spelt backwards.

My third PC, my university laptop (it's an Honor Magicbook 14), I call B3LLE, named after my cat, who is named after the princess, and as she's a bibliophile (someone who loves books) and it's a university laptop.

My current gaming PC I built myself and I call it DA2H, as it's my second gaming PC I've ever owned, and the fastest I've ever had.

I'm honestly pissed right now about my PC

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:59 AM PDT

I built my PC for the first time 2 years ago. I was on a budget so I cheaped out on certain components. I got the cheapest b450 mobo ($60), the cheapest case with a side window panel and 1 exhaust fan ($25). I had a gtx 1070 second hand and although recommended was a 500w psu, I cheaped out with a 450w corsair 80+ psu. My cable management was meh at best. I made a lot of mistakes and compromises on my first build but it lasted me almost 2yrs until my pc wasn't turning on back in end of April.

I made bad decisions too back in April. I thought psu was the issue at first so I got a new 550w psu (80+ bronze) . Psu wasnt the issue so I assumed mobo was the issue. So I got a better mobo b450 mobo this time ($100). And then I bent the pins of my cpu trying to take it out of old mobo. I didn't wanna risk breaking them so I got a new one (3500x was the only one available in the shops). I even got a new lian li case with good airflow to stay safe this time. Overall spent around $400 this time. I thought it would last longer, maybe around 4-5 years how it does for most people I know, before 'something' goes wrong.

Guess what. It didn't even last 2 months. My pc hasn't been turning on since Sunday after a power outage(no lights, fans, display. Nothing). I live in a third world country and power outages usually occur 3-4 times a week during Summer. My old psu did fine for almost 2 years so I assumed this would do the same. It didn't. I spend around $400, took as many measures as I could but I guess I should've bought a ups.

I don't even know what to do now. I hope its just psu and my mobo/cpu/gpu aren't fried too. I can't even go to the shops cause Covid rates are higher than ever in my country and we have a lockdown. I'm even anxious to get a pc anymore in fear it'll just break down again. Sorry for the long rant.

I have a prebuilt IBUYPOWER pc and would like to upgrade its weaker parts, unsure where to start as I am completely new to PC upgrading.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:51 PM PDT

My current specs are as follows: Intel Core I5 9400f B365M IB-F mobo Geforce 1660 8GB of ram and I'm not sure what else to include here but I just want to know if its even worth the time and money to upgrade this pc. I am just getting into hardware components and am not too knowledgeable, so I would just like a tip in the right direction to help make my pc run games better.

    3060 vs 3060 ti

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:32 AM PDT

If you want just 1080p gaming which one of those should you choose? The 3060 should last longer with it's 12gb, right? Or how it works... Which one should you choose? Are you choosing between bit of performance over future proof or?

    PC Build Help

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:45 PM PDT

I'm looking for help on building a pc. I've been a console player my whole life and looking to mix pc into my life. I've done a bit of research myself and made a list of parts I'd potentially like to use. Can I have some help please. My price range in sorta flexible but would like to stay around the $1,200ish mark.

I'm not entirely sure if all these are compatible with each other or not. Any parts not good? Anything helps! Thanks!

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/G6rwsX

BTW on the bottom it says 2 components aren't compatible. I barley understand what they mean. What should I swap for?

    Hello reddit!

First time posting here, after the ump-teenth time my PC has frozen on me, I have finally garnered enough pity from friends to sponsor me a new build.

Since my last build from the protozoan era, I admit I am gravely out of touch with benchmarks of today. So after a 2 hour long dive fest relearning terminology and familiarising myself with the latest and greatest, this is what i came up with (below).

Any and all input to save me hair (and my lovely friends hard earned dolla) is greatly appreciated.

Would it be worth it to switch my windows install location with new SSD?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:47 AM PDT

Just wondering if there would be any major changes if I swapped the location of my windows install? I got a new ssd (Western Digital 1TB WD Blue SN550 NVMe Internal SSD - Gen3 x4 PCIe 8Gb/s, M.2 2280, 3D NAND, Up to 2,400 MB/s)on prime day since I ran out of room on my current ssd (Samsung MZ-75E500B/AM 850 EVO 500GB 2.5" SATA3 Internal SSD).

I have no issues really with it being on my old ssd. Boots up quick enough for me. Is there any other advantages to switching?

    I have 8gb 2133 from a spare PC, should I add it to my 16gb 3200?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:09 PM PDT

A lot of older threads (5 and 6 years ago) they are saying that the difference in speed is miniscule.

I just wanted to check with more recent information just in case something has changed.

    UPS Recommendations?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:51 PM PDT

I hear having one is a really good idea to have just in case of a power outage or something. Even though I thought just a decent surge protector should be good enough, I just wanna be safe and make sure my pc is as safe as possible once I get it back from the repair person I took it to. Any recommendations? Also if someone could explain how they work, that would be great :)

    GPU Cable from PSU

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:36 PM PDT

    Hey,

just saw this video: https://youtu.be/-8LMML_EiMg My question is with regard to what he says starting at 17:38.

What should I do? I want to use a 3090. So that means that I should use that "better" cable? If I do, is everything fine then? Will I have full power? Like a 100%? He states that it's enough for the 3080, though does it still apply for the 3090? What's to consider?

    Thank you very much!

Switch 2 NVMe SSD around on MB

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:26 PM PDT

I have 2 SSDs: one is SN550 and the other is SN850. I didn't realize that only one SSD slot on my motherboard supports PCIe Gen 4.0. Unfortunately I put SN550 on it. SN850 is my boot drive.

I have been using my PC without any issues so far but I still want to make it right. I am wondering if I can just simply switch them around on the motherboard. Would I lose any files or need to reinstall windows?

PC won't boot after approximately teaspoon of water got onto the case.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:26 AM PDT

    Hi r/builapc community,

I spilled a bit of water onto my PC case (plastic and no vents on the top) last night and didn't think anything of it because the PC was 'off' (PSU switch on however).

This morning the PC would not boot at all, the power switch did not even flicker the LED - completely dead. I opened the whole thing up and saw the PSU(corsair) had in fact been a little bit 'wet' from below the case where there must have been a 'puddle'. I purchased a brand new PSU (corsair) this morning and plugged everything back in. The LED light on the case power switch came back on but would not boot the CPU fan or anything else from what I could see.

I assumed I mistakenly miss-plugged the headers however after confirming (and re-confirming) the headers and all other components, the LED on the power switch does not even come on anymore!

My question is this: How do I know where the source of the problem is? Is the motherboard 100% fried? Surely the components on the motherboard (CPU, GPU, RAM) are not fried also... Where do I go from here? Buy a new motherboard and pray?

Will I be able to install Dark Rock Pro 4 at Asus Rog Strix Z590-E Gaming? I checked bequiet motherboardcheck and it seems to be incompatible, but at PCPartPicker they compatible and I also found some intel related question where the guy indicated in the characteristics these two components together.

Change my cooler on the Ryzen 5 3600 after more than a year and the difference is huge!

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:06 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I bought my PC (thanks everyone here for help) a bit more than a year ago, but I had issues with my CPU cooling. It was working on like 60c idle and around 85c in games.

Yesterday, I downloaded Prime95 to stress test my CPU and after 3 minutes, my PC crashed and I got sick of it. Today I went into the store and bought a Arctic Freezer 34 Esports Duo and installed it.

I tried it in a few games and the temps are around 55-65c. Idle it is at around 45c and on stress test for a few minutes the max I saw was 63c.

Is it normal that the difference is this huge? Maybe my stock cooler was just not properly installed?

Looking to build first PC for work and light gaming

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 02:00 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I work in education and will use this machine for lesson planning, grading, editing lesson videos (nothing intense at all.) I plan to use two monitors for most of this work. I also do some casual gaming with friends. Most frequently we play Valorant, Minecraft, or Rocket League. If it can run these fine, anything else is a bonus.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I want to be able to run games smoothly. Higher video settings would be preferable, but my budget is pretty firmly at $1100.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$1100. If the performance would get significantly better going above this, I am interested in hearing out those ideas! If I can save some money somewhere and only marginally harm performance, those are welcome suggestions as well.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I’m a fairly experienced builder, but I’ve hit a wall. My new build is an unstable furnace. Please help?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:01 AM PDT

EDIT: Several people have pointed out the mistake I made in the fan orientation on my AIO. This is almost guaranteed to be my problem. I'll be adjusting it after work and check in with a second update.

I've recently acquired a 3080 Ti (without feeding the scalpers) and decided to transplant my system from a Corsair Carbide Air 540 to a Lian-Li PC-O11 mini.

I'm using three 120mm intake fans at the bottom and three exhaust at the top. The AIO radiator is using four 140mm fans in a push-pull configuration.

Despite all this, I'm seeing high temperatures on my CPU and GPU. Under a benchmark like Cinebench, the CPU will sometimes hit 101 degrees before rebooting the entire machine. The GPU only gets to the low 70's in a benchmark like Time Spy, but seems to be having crashing issues as well. My CPU used to max out around 85 degrees even with my overclock.

In my old case, I was getting Time Spy scores in the high 17,000 range. Now they're in the mid 15,000 range.

My theory is that the Cooler Master 850W SFX power supply is dumping so much heat into the rear section of the case that the radiator can't actually cool the CPU. This is having the chain effect of heating the front section of the case and making the GPU work harder.

I'd like to know if you guys have any other theories or even solutions. I'm gonna be pretty disappointed if this case just can't disperse enough heat.

    CPU: Core i9 9900K OC'ed at 5GHz all-core

    GPU: 3080 Ti Founders Edition

    Motherboard: Asrock Taichi Ultimate Z390

RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 4x8GB

PSU: Cooler Master V850 SFX Gold

    AIO: Corsair H115i 280mm

    Fans: 6x 120mm and 4x 140mm Be Quiet Silent Wings 3

    Case: Lian-Li PC-O11 Dynamic Mini
