This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Don't Wait For Black Friday To Build Your PC

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 07:15 PM PST

So many people ask if they should wait, then end up missing a deal! Keep an eye out and if the price is right pull the trigger.

It's one of the greatest times to be building a gaming/workstation PC. The value this year is insane!

I recently bought all this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QCFYHB and it was only $570 AFTER TAXES

r/buildapcsales has been enormously helpful for anyone trying to find a deal

I made a chart to compare how hard it is to run different combinations of refresh rates and resolutions

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 01:01 PM PST

I've been around this subreddit for a while and I see a lot of misinformation when it comes to running different combinations at different refresh rates. In particular, I've seen quite a few people say that 1440p 60hz is harder or just the same as 1080p 144hz - which is just straight up incorrect. It's around 25% easier.

Whether or not you can hit these numbers depends on the entire rest of your build so I didn't want to go into that but if anyone is trying to choose a monitor this should help.

EDIT: I should have specified that I am being entirely theoretical here, the actual numbers will be different depending on multiple factors

How bad is the Gigabyte B450 motherboards?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 03:24 AM PST

    I'm planning to build a budget Ryzen 5 2600 + RX 570 build.
My friends suggested me to go straight to a MSI Mortar B450 board because of better VRMs, better BIOS and stable OC.
They also said that Gigabyte boards have awful BIOS and average VRM.

I'm a complete beginner, I haven't build a PC from scratch ever since. Also my budget is tight.
The price of the Gigabyte B450M is waaaay cheaper than the MSI boards in my country (Philippines).
I am not planning to go crazy on overclocking or intense modding, would I be fine with a cheap Gigabyte B450 board?

One final cry for help. Started getting random crashes and blue screens after getting a new GPU. Started diagonosing it as a defective GPU. However, now the problems persist with my old GPU as well.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Random blue screens with various error messages that are seemingly unrelated. Crashes in games, applications,... even my browser crashes occasionally.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    Ha! A lot. I've

    • Reinstalled windows completely and formatted all my drives.
    • Uninstalled and reinstalled nVidia drivers at least a dozen times (with safe mode DDU)
    • Stress tested everything that can be stress tested (CPU, GPU, RAM)
    • Underclocked the GPU
    • Removed my CPU overclock
    • Tried switching back to my old GPU
    • Did the Driver Verifier thing
    • Monitored temps, they are fine
    • Changed a new power cables to the GPU
    • Tried powering the GPU with two separate power cables
    • Updated BIOS. First to the latest non-beta, and now to the latest beta.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I already arranged the GPU to be sent back as I though it was defective. Now though, the issues persist with my old GPU so I literally have no idea how to move forward from here.

PC Noob looking to build a gaming pc without breaking the bank (aren’t we all...)

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 11:13 AM PST

Hey, looking to build a gaming PC to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare, fortnite, and various other random games.

Don't know much, if any, about PC builds, what to look for, etc.

**Budget: would LOVE to stay at $800 or under, I know, I know.... I KNOW. Not a lot to work with.

I already have a Acer Gaming Monitor 27" Curved ED273 Abidpx 1920 x 1080 144Hz Refresh Rate G-SYNC Compatible (Display Port, HDMI & DVI Ports) which I don't intend on upgrading anytime soon.

    Help ? Plz ? Anyone ?

Why is the i9-9900k performing worse than i7-9700k?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 01:05 PM PST

Okay, so, as far as I know, the only difference between the 9900k and 9700k is that the former has double the amount of threads, which should increase performance, right? I thought that, but I'm looking at this benchmark and the 9700k seems to consistently perform better than the 9900k(at least in the first benchmark, haven't watched farther than that), which honestly does not make any sense to me. Can someone please explain?

    Casual gamer's first build

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 10:31 AM PST

Been really working up to building myself a decent PC since my laptop can barely keep up with the recent games like Witcher 3, DOOM, and Dark Souls 3.

Budget is preferably around 1500 or less.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yVtzNq

Let me know what you guys think.

(EDIT) Forgot to mention most or all the parts I pick will be from my local Microcenter which is running a great sale for the CPU (129.99) plus mobo combo (-$30) so there's no problem deviating from pcpartpicker's price a bit.

    1st ever PC build

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 12:14 PM PST

Looking to build my very first PC suitable to play a lot of games, and in good quality that's not going to drain my wallet. I know there's no such thing as getting ahead of the curve with how quickly technology develops, but I am looking at getting a i7-9700k or even a i9-9900 with a quality graphics card that I can run 144fps. Now, with me being a novice in the PC world, I am not sure what graphic cards to look at, and I want to stay in the range of $1,300-$1,900k for an entire build while staying away from liquid cooling. If anyone's got any advice, or builds within my range, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

    Should I change anything?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 05:00 AM PST

Fairly certain my PSU just kicked the bucket? Should I replace?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 12:33 AM PST

Hi! So just today, my GPU stopped working while playing destiny 2. Further testing indicates that the gpu appears to be fine, but when I draw more power (eg more than 30 seconds of gameplay) the entire system powers off and I get an anti surge trigger. Happens with other games as well. Heres an image of the GPU power consumption right before it turns off. The peaks and valleys are me tabbing in/out of destiny 2:

    https://imgur.com/a/SmhuZ8O/

Am I correct in assuming this is a PSU problem and not a mobo/gpu problem?

    Thanks for reading :)

    i7 9700k vs Ryzen 3700x - 1440p ultrawide gaming advice - Final decision

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 04:42 AM PST

After months of research, I'm finally down to this one last big decision. Really could do with the communities help based on my quite specific criteria here. As you can see, I don't play many of the newer AAA games that usually get benchmarked so its not a clear cut as using the popular benchmarking videos. I play a lot of older games that maybe don't utilise multi-threading but I'm also wanting to future proof for games that most likely will.

Do I go with an i7 9700k or Ryzen 3700x with a 2070super. Or will a 3600 with an rx5700xt do the job?

    My criteria:

    · Primarily gaming

    · Looking to run 21:9 (3440x1440)

    · Aiming for 75-100fps

    · Willing to overclock

    · For playing these games (in order of how much I play)

    o Arma 3 (I play this A LOT!)

    o No Mans Sky

    o Kingdom Come Deliverance

    o Elite Dangerous

    o GTA5

    o Subnautica

    o Rome 2 Total War

    · Future proofing for games like x4 Foundations, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, Star Citizen, MS Flight simulator, RDR2, Uboat, Bannerlord etc.

    · Based in UK

    · Upgrading from a i5 4670k (oc to 4.4) and gtx 1060 6gb

    · Rig to last me 4-6 years

    Much appreciated!

A silent and not too big gaming machine for 1440p120hz / 4k60hz with 3600+2080S

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 10:38 AM PST

    Hello,

My goal is to build a gaming machine that is as not too big and at the same time silent and powering a 2080 Super.

I made initially a Dan A4-based mini-itx build but as I couldn't fit any triple-fan 2080S in it, I ended up with looking for the smallest mid-tower that could suit this 328mm large GPU, that is the most performant and silent among all the air cooled ones.

I will mostly play single-player RPGs and action games on my TV (which is a Samsung QLED 55" Q70R supporting 1440p120hz and 4k60hz that I will alternate depending on the kind of games) and on a monitor that I still have to buy but most likely will be a 1440p144hz.

Thank you in advance for any feedbacks that you will give me about this build!

FINAL BUILD CRITIQUE: ~$1500 Editing + Gaming Build

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 02:10 PM PST

This will be my first time building a PC. My budget is ~$1500. I have peripherals and I will be using a 1440p 144hz monitor. I would like to keep costs down as much as possible, but I'm willing to pay for performance.

    Intended Primary Uses:

    • Editing high megapixel RAW images in Lightroom & Photoshop. (~80MB files)
    • 4K video editing in Premier Pro & Davinci Resolve. My videos are typically <5 mins and don't involve much use of After Effects.
    • Fortnite @ 144 constant on med/low settings.
    • Other AAA titles like COD, GTA, Battlefield, RDR2, etc. Don't necessarily need to hit 144 on all of these. 80+ on high settings would be fine.
    • Typical internet browsing and office use. Use of programs like spotify & discord simultaneously while gaming or editing.

    Notes/Questions about build:

    • Will the stock cooler be sufficient if I plan to OC eventually or should I look at a beefier air cooler or AIO?
    • Went with the 970 Evo for all of my programs and photos/videos that I am actively working on to maximize speed. The HDD is for completed photo, video, and file storage.
    • Went with a 2070S over 5700XT because I've heard it may be better for the video editing work I do. I can be convinced otherwise.
    • Is the RAM I selected sufficient? I've heard Ryzen builds can be picky with the RAM they like.

I had originally planned an Intel build with a 9700K but going with Ryzen seems to make more sense for my needs and it allows me to get a nicer GPU and stay within my budget. If you see any problems or have any suggestions, please let me know.

    Ryzen 5 3600 vs 3700x vs i7-9700k

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 06:00 AM PST

Probably going with a 2070 Super for graphics, but also maybe considering a 2080ti.

I don't have a particularly tight budget and am willing to put down more money. But I don't want to spend more than I need. Also don't want to be limited, basically want to be able to play anything comfortably, including possibly VR.

This is for a primarily gaming pc. I want to be able to play the latest games, future-proof. I usually watch a lot of YouTube and do homework as well.

    Advice?

Wraith Stealth vs Artic Freezer 13 for Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 01:54 PM PST

Not sure if this fits on this sub but I don't know where else to ask. I just ordered a Ryzen 5 3600 and I was wondering if the included cooler was better than the Artic freezer 13. I remember a while back when ryzen cpus just started comming out that people were saying how good the included coolers were. I already have the artic freezer 13 cooler that I bought for my current system with the AMD X4 760K because the stock one was pretty bad. Since I remember that the Freezer 13 was fairly cheap (i think it was around 15$) I was wondering if the included cooler for the 3600 was better? I couldn't find a direct comparison between the two. Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

What do I need to game at 1440p/144hz, I have trouble hitting 1080p/144hz

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 01:35 PM PST

I currently run with an MSI B450 Pro Carbon AC, Ryzen 5 3600, Corsair LPX Vengeance 16 GB (2x8) of 3200 MHz RAM, and an MSI 1660 TI Ventus OC 6GB card.

I mostly play rainbow 6, and on max settings I get between 120-150 fps. On YouTube videos I see others getting about 150-180 fps with similar setups, and benchmarks put it at around 180fps. I don't know why mine are so low. I see also that when paired with a 5700 xt, rainbow 6 can hit way over the 200fps mark when paired with a Ryzen 3600. It can also easily hit 144fps @1440p. Based of the numbers I get, I find it hard to believe I would get such numbers if I used a 5700 xt. Am I doing something wrong that hinders performance or is true performance that much lower than benchmarks?

    Help finding compatible RAM sticks

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 01:28 PM PST

Hey! I'm looking for some help for finding "compatible" RAM sticks for my PC. I have an Asrock H310CM-IB motherboard, and tried using UserBenchmark to find some new RAM sticks (I want 8GBx2), but everything I try to choose seems to be "incompatible" with the motherboard. I don't want to go ahead and buy some, then find out later that they won't function properly. Any help is appreciated.

GPU SLI: A Simple Overheating solution?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 11:15 AM PST

I have placed a fan between the card in my sli setup and has helped somewhat, but I wonder: if heat transfers upwards, thereby causing the top card to be hotter than the bottom one, wouldn't it make sense to rotate the whole PC upwards so that heat does not accumulate on the top card? Has anyone ever tried doing this? Would there be better temps, no difference, or maybe it's a bad idea for other PC components?

P.S. No, SLI is not dead. And yes, it works. Two 1080ti's perform better than a single 2080ti (minus the raytracing).

    MSI B450 Tomahawk Max malfunctioning

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 08:19 AM PST

I recently received and installed the above mentioned motherboard. As far as I can tell, I connected everything correctly. I have noticed it seems to be taking longer than it should to boot up (1-2 minutes) and sometimes it doesn't boot at all. Everything in the case powers on but nothing comes up on my monitors. I have assured the connections to the GPU are secure.

On two occasions, shortly after I started the PC and was working, my monitors went dark and lost connection. Again, components in the case were working, but nothing on my monitors.

I saw that there is a BIOS update that is supposed to address the boot time so I may update the bios today to see if that solves the other issues.

I don't have a lot of experience building PC's so I don't want to assume the motherboard is messes up when it is actually me screwing something up. Thanks in advance for any troubleshooting advice for this issue.

Water-cooling in NZXT S3400, should I change my case?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 01:10 PM PST

2 years ago, during the black Friday sale, I bought parts and build my first PC. Now, for no good reason rather than having the itch to open my PC up and upgrade it, I want to add watercooling to my system.

This will be my first time watercooling, and I haven't done too much research into it yet, but from what I've seen and heard, it seems like the NZXT S3400 isn't the best case for water-cooling. Now I'm wondering if I should just change my case all together.

And with the black Friday sales coming up, I'm wondering if it will be a good idea to even upgrade some of my parts. Particularly my processor and motherboard. Might be a bit of an overkill but I want to see what you guys think.

See below my current parts and please tell me what you think.
