Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:38 AM PDT I'm looking to build my first PC but don't know how to choose a PSU. After some research on the Internet all I know that I need about 650W-750W of power. Can ya'll give some tips and suggestions on what I should look for? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:38 PM PDT Ive been struggling for the last year with my Asrock Challenger 5700xt. It sounded like a freaking jet turbine when under heavy load, and i would have to manually undervolt it and set the fan curve higher to keep its temperature under control. Under load its junction temp would basically peg itself at 110 Celsius, with its average temp usually around 80-90 Celsius. It would occasionally hard crash the system. I got it for around $230 new so i basically decided I cheaped out too much and should have gotten a Sapphire card like i was originally planning on. Well you know how the graphics car market has gotten… Today i finally had enough and took it out and disassembled it. It was easier than i expected with the cooler only held on by the 4 screws on the mounting bracket. This is what i found… Whole sections of the die didn't have thermal paste and the consistency was basically like dried toothpaste on your sink counter. I was impatient and went to Best Buy and grabbed the best thermal paste they had in stock. I know its not the absolute best thermal paste out there but it was available. They price matched it at ~$12 online for the tube. Anyway, I applied that generously, reinstalled the card and put it on a stress test for 10 minutes running Gigapixel AI on a bunch of high resolution photos to essentially peg it at 100% for 10 minutes. Results: Near silent fan noise. GPU average maxed out at 55 Celsius GPU junction maxed out at 77 celcius That's a >30 Celsius difference! Holy crap. Check your factory thermal paste. It might be hot (literally) garbage. EDIT: ALso the Idle temps used to be in the low 50's Celcius, and they are now 31 Celcius. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jun 2021 11:40 AM PDT I'm going to be starting a computer science degree in September. It will last 4 years and I need a new computer. I'm debating between buying a high-end laptop or a cheap laptop to take to lectures for note-taking and then build a powerful pc for my dorm. I know price-wise that a pc is much better for the performance you get but is there any major downsides to building a good custom pc. Also, what is the warranty like on custom builds? I know you only get a warranty on the parts but how long is the normal warranty for each individual part? thanks [link] [comments]
Find a gaming computer right for you... Posted: 19 Jun 2021 08:48 AM PDT Hey, I am planning on getting a gaming computer soon. However, I only know the very basics so far. My friend said I should research what gaming computer would be right for me. Does anyone know a website or something that could help me get started etc.? I am also not sure weather to get a pre-built or not. I know my friend could help me build one. I also have a budget!! [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:16 PM PDT I've been building a pc for quite some time now waiting for gpus to restock but I've finally decided I don't really want to wait anymore. My friend gave me a GT 710 for free because he upgraded and I was wondering if it would work with my system. I have an R9 3900x, 32gb 3600mhz RAM, and a 850w gold PSU. Let's say I plug in this GT 710 to my system, will there be any problems? I know I can't run anything big but maybe CSGO, Minecraft and LoL at very low settings? Also, is it difficult to take out a GPU and plug in a new one? Because whenever I can get my hands on a 3080 I will be using that. Any advice helps! Thank you. Modding/upgrading an office pc into a “”gaming””pc for digital art. Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:54 PM PDT For the past few days ive been researching how to get into computer building mostly because of budget. And recently ive come across people taking old office Pc's like the dell optiplex 3020, 7020 etc and adding new parts to replace the ones that are outdated for gaming. these builds always end up much cheaper than building one from scratch. Basically i want to have a pc for digital art, Mostly CSP. Knowing i can upgrade an old pc like this at almost half the cost of buying a pre build im really leaning this route for my next computer. But i am confused at some parts. TL~i want to replace old parts of an office computer to turn into a digital art computer (not gaming) but have some questions. 1)which desktop would be best to modify. Why should i choose say the 3020 over the 7020? 2)alot of builds on these computers have expensive GPU's meant for high quality gaming and i am only looking for a very basic one to plug in hdmi. Any suggestions? (Below or around 70$) For specifics. Im fine with a SFF i actually perfer it since it would fit nicely on my desk and im not filling it with too much stuff. I plan on having 8gb of ram A 256gb ssd And a graphics card good enough for the software [link] [comments]
When shopping, what's the keyword for a mouse with a "clicky" or "notched" scroll wheel? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:06 AM PDT In the 2000s I had a mouse for 10 years that had a scroll wheel with a distinct tactile "click"/"notch" feel when scrolling. Ever since about 2010, every mouse I get has a smooth scroll wheel. And every 2 years I have to buy a new one because the mouse wheel is hyper-sensitive to gunk and starts skipping and jumping during scrolling. Otherwise, the mouse works perfectly. So I keep having to buy new mice because the scroll wheel breaks. I want the more reliable "hard" scroll mouse. What word, keyword do I use to find this feature when shopping? Can I connect usb 3.2 port to 2.0 motherboard slot? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:35 PM PDT I don't care about speed. I just want to make it cheap and not have an empty usb port. [link] [comments]
Not building a pc, but can I use thermal paste that's been put away for about two or three months? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 10:01 AM PDT It hasn't been hot, in that closet it's regularly room temperature. It's all I have left and I urgently need to repaste my laptop's CPU since it's reaching a temp of 80 while idle and 107 while playing Oxygen Not Included. Not good, bro. I don't want to lift up the CPU cooler, however, unless I know for sure that I can use this paste. Reason being that it will be a long while before I can get another tube. What should I look out for to make sure it's safe and useable apart from liquidified thermal paste? Anyway to "revive" it if needed? Thank you, and I do apologize about this not being a building pc post. [link] [comments]

What CPU should I get for a Music/Video Production PC? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 02:25 PM PDT Hi there, I'm trying to build a PC for music and video production, as well as gaming. I've been looking at multiple CPUs and decided on getting the Ryzen 5 3600. I was wondering if anyone would agree with this choice or steer me in a different direction. Note: I am not looking for an absolute powerhouse. I am just trying to build an entry level PC. My budget for a CPU is $250 and under. The software I use is:
As for games, I will mostly be playing fighting games (Skullgirls, SFV, GGST), which aren't necessarily very power-hungry. I apologize for not giving much good detail (mainly because I am not sure what to put). If there is anything you need to ask me about, feel free in the comments. Thank you in advance. Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:27 PM PDT After overclocking my GPU/CPU I finally realized why my game performance is absolutely trash. I was lead to believe my 1070 can't handle games like CoD:MW or even PUBG because my GPU was outdated. I factory reset my PC a year ago, which also reset the bios settings. On default when I built my PC, XMP was enable, utilizing the full power of my RAM. The entire time my ram was running at 1666Mhz, not the supposed 3000Mhz. Once I turned the setting back on, it felt like a new computer. This whole time I was blaming the shitting game for bad ports, it was me the whole time. Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:25 PM PDT Build information: Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro WiFi CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB 3600MHz GPU: MSI 3070 Ventus OC 2X PSU: Thermaltake SMART 650w SSD: Western Digital 1TB Some context: I had a Gigabyte Aorus 2060 Super until this past Monday. Sold it and purchased the 3070 listed above. (Note: The 3070 I bought was an RMA, the guy I bought from had a 2080ti that stopped working, MSI replaced it with this 3070. The guy I bought from never installed it in a system, as he bought a 3090 during the RMA process.) Installed the new GPU, everything worked fine all week, no issues, ran games amazingly, I was thrilled to finally have a 30 series card. Now, come today, I went to my PC, did some school work (light coding in Microsoft Visual Code, nothing graphically intense), the pc slept after I was done. I came back to game in the afternoon and when I opened the door to my office, I smelled something burning, thought it might've been something around my neighborhood and tried to wake my pc. All of the RGB on the motherboard and CPU cooler was still on, but the displays would not wake. And after the first reboot, the VGA light on my motherboard was solid red. Queue panic. I tried restarting the PC, reseated the GPU, reseated RAM, cleared CMOS, switched the order of the power connectors to the GPU and every other possible solution I could find online. I also tried putting my GPU in my girlfriend's PC and got no display there either. After digging around, I came across multiple articles talking about how you shouldn't use the daisy chained connectors off of the primary PCiE power cables. Well, that's the only way I could occupy those slots, as my PSU is non-modular and only offers the one PCiE power cable with daisy chained connections. So I guess my question is two fold, did using the daisy-chained power connectors fry my GPU or did the card try to use too much power and fry the PCiE plugs on my GPU? I assume it's the former considering the PC still turns and lights up. Any info would be helpful, TIA! TL;DR - GPU seemingly died for no reason. Unsure if daisy-chained power connectors are to blame or just bad GPU. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jun 2021 02:02 PM PDT Hey everyone, I could use some help understanding the right companies/understanding what fits my needs. I built my own PC years ago, so I understand the basics. I'm a graphic and web designer, so I want something beefy, but I'm not sure what parts are important to look into for it. I'm also lacking on USB ports, I have 2 monitors and a drawing tablet that needs to plug into the PC, plus a microphone, keyboard and mouse, so like 8 USB ports are needed. If you have resources for dummies like me, or can point me in the right way, it will be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]

CPU cooler not showing any green when plugged into motherboard RGB header Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:55 PM PDT Hello all. I have an ASUS B450-F Gaming motherboard. I connected my AMD Wraith CPU cooler to the RGB Header #2 of the motherboard. However, the light on the cooler always seemed off compared to the glowing motherboard LED. Yesterday I eventually got around to installing ASUS Aura and I finally figured out the issue. After a bunch of testing, I realized that the color blue (I think) wasn't shown at all on the CPU cooler. Red and green (and combinations of them) showed up fine, however. I thought maybe I had the RGB header plugged in the wrong way. So I took it out and reversed again. Now I can't see any green. I only see red and blue, and combinations of them. Colors like teal (which is blue+green) only show blue (I know it should be teal comparing it to the onboard motherboard LEDs). Here is an example video. So does anyone know what's up? Are there some damaged pins on the motherboard which is preventing one of the three colors from being shown? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you :) [link] [comments]
My son is (mostly) financing and building his 1st PC. Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:38 PM PDT My son (12) has worked hard for the last year and a half to save and now has a budget of $650-700 (U.S.) for the complete build. I contributed a windows 10 key and all the peripherals, and a friend of mine donated the patriot ram when he was shipped 2 sets for the one he ordered (thank you Amazon). The only thing missing is a GPU. We have been looking for a used GTX 970 or equivalent but have had a hell of a time on eBay and local marketplace apps finding one he can afford. Turning to this wonderful community is our last effort before he has to go back to his mother's across the country. If anyone has a card that they would be willing to sell and ship for $150 or so, he and I would be very grateful. Also, if anyone has feedback on alternative parts without increasing the price, we would love to read it. Thank you all for any input or advise that you're willing to share.

which one of these systems should I pair with an RTX 3070 TI? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 12:03 PM PDT I have an RTX 3070 Ti shipping to me as of me writing this. I have picked three different systems to pair it with. I don't have much time to pick as I wanna play games as soon as possible(this will be my first gaming pc). I have made two lists for AMD and 1 for Intel. I will be playing on an MSI Optix G27CQ4, it is a curved 1440p 165hz monitor with a 1ms response time. I already have a WD blue sn550 nvme SSD 1TB, and I am going for a white and black theme. If none of these are good pairings with an RTX 3070 Ti please tell me why and what to change. I need help, the PSU fan is very noisy Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:43 PM PDT A couple of weeks ago, THE PSU fan is very loud, it is very strange because one day I just heard that strange sound that was not present before. The sound is present at all times when I am playing, when the pc is IDLE, honestly it is somewhat annoying to hear that noise, but I am much more afraid that something worse could happen on my pc. My configuration is very simple a ryzen 3 3200g, 16 GB RAM, a fan and 2 led strips. As you can read, my pc consumes very little besides I always check the temperatures of my PC and they are normal. I honestly do not know what is the reason for this strange and sudden sound. Btw my PSU is Cooler master MWE 750 W 80 Plus Bronze, if you wonder why so many watts, it was the only one available at that time. Here are two links of the sound: https://photos.app.goo.gl/YPXej3NkqisTS2Wz8 [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:40 PM PDT Hi everyone, I bought my computer about 1 year ago, and since I got it I have problems with half the games I used to play. after a few minutes or even a few hours the game's fps drops to 10 or less and if I use alt+fab the screen freezes and only resolves by pressing the off button. As I said before, this doesn't happen in every game, I can play games like: metro redux, l4d, resident, and others without problem. on AMD's forum what you find most are people having the same type of problem and without any solution. my pc specs:
I've already tried: to update all drivers, use specific drivers, test all components (never gave any kind of error), sent the pc to the technician of the store that bought it (no problem was found), already I switched windows to linux, change settings in bios and for those who recommend buying a GPU: please don't do it, in the country where I live a 2GB video card is getting to cost almost 2,000, and in my currency this is a lot to spend on such a simple card. if i could buy a gpu i would have already done it if anyone has any tips on how to solve it I would be very grateful [link] [comments] |
