Impact of SLI's "death" on MoBo Form Factor.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:29 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

Now that we know RTX 3080 will not support SLI, is there still a place for "mainstream gaming' ATX motherboards in current form? Of course there's still 3090 in the picture but amount of people that are going to run them in SLI is miniscule. Do we still need all those PCIe slots? I've been looking at smaller form factor motherboards and one that caught my eye was Asus Crosshair VIII Impact. It's basically all people will need this gen in unusual mDTX format. Do you think boards like this will become more popular now? Apart from PCIe slots - do we really lose so much that this will never (in foreseeable future) become a standard?

    From DataHoarder:

some 5400 drives appear to be actualy 7200. Not a massive problem if you are chucking a couple of drives in your case for bulk storage but if you are doing anything more complicated it can cause issues.

Given the gap between the 3090 and the 3080 a card in the middle is unavoidable. What do you think makes more sense for the 3080Ti, a cut-down 3090 with 384-bit bus and 12GB VRAM or an upgraded 3080 with 320-bit bus and 20GB VRAM?

    What are your thoughts?

Edit: NVIDIA made a case for the 12GB version:

[Justin Walker] We're constantly analyzing memory requirements of the latest games and regularly review with game developers to understand their memory needs for current and upcoming games. The goal of 3080 is to give you great performance at up to 4k resolution with all the settings maxed out at the best possible price.

In order to do this, you need a very powerful GPU with high speed memory and enough memory to meet the needs of the games. A few examples - if you look at Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Metro Exodus, Wolfenstein Youngblood, Gears of War 5, Borderlands 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 running on a 3080 at 4k with Max settings (including any applicable high res texture packs) and RTX On, when the game supports it, you get in the range of 60-100fps and use anywhere from 4GB to 6GB of memory.

Extra memory is always nice to have but it would increase the price of the graphics card, so we need to find the right balance.

    A 3080 Ti with 12GB would have a bandwidth of 936 GB/s while the 20GB version would be 760 GB/s.
