    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Best 1080p IPS 144hz 25" monitor right now? I have rtx2060 super

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 12:27 AM PST

I really need help. I still don't have any idea what monitor should I buy right now. I know that there's a lot of TN/VA panels out there that people could easily suggest. However colors are not that great.

I've recently learned that IPS panels are actually great for color accuracy and displays. Any suggestions that I might look into right now?

Note: I mostly played FPS (lot of apex and csgo) and Dota2.

Tip for new builders: Case and CPU Fan Curves

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 06:34 AM PST

When you set your fan speeds in the BIOS after setting up your PC for the first time - if you're working with a modern motherboard/bios - you'll likely have access to a tool that resembles a graph with dots on it, where the Y-axis is fan speed in % of max speed and the X-axis is temperature values in degrees celcius. This is, if you are using PWM fans (fans that change speed based on temperature information sent from the motherboard), the most straightforward way to set up your fan profiles. A profile determined by dots you place on the graph will tell the fan under what conditions (i.e. at what temperatures) to spin at a certain percent of max speed.

Here's my observation - fan speed changes are more distracting than (relatively) loud fans. And my suggestion: Don't make a straight or consistently ascending line on the graph, for example 40 degrees 30% speed, 50 degrees 40% speed, 60 degrees 70% speed, 70 degrees 90% speed, 80 degrees 100% speed. Don't do this because the result will be that your fans constantly speed up and slow down dynamically as the temperature changes under normal usage at safe temperatures. This is, for me, much more distracting than having the fans run consistently at one speed a bit faster/louder. Here's what I've done instead:

In my bios fan control settings there are four dots on the graph and a graph for each fan. I've set all of them to (point 1) 0 degrees celcius = 50% speed; (point 2) 60 degrees celcius = 50% speed. These two values ensure that the fan runs at 50% the majority of the time - namely when the CPU temperature is anywhere between 0 and 60 degrees celcius. This is both quiet enough for me and keeps the temperatures around 35-40 degrees at idle. The fan speed doesn't change at all up until the CPU reaches 60 degrees, which is the max temperature I've observed any CPU core to reach under normal, non-gaming or rendering workloads. So most of the time the fans are running at 50% speed and the CPU temps are below 60 degrees; then the third point is 65 degrees = 75% speed, and the fourth 70 degrees = 100% speed. The reason for this 10 degree span is twofold: For one, this is the temperature range which is easily handled by my cooling solution with fans at close to full speed when the CPU is at 100% utilisation. This is also (70c) the max temperature I would prefer my CPU to run at for longer duration, although it is well below throttling temp and even 10 degrees below the widely assumed safe operating temp for my chip. Just an aside, putting both latter values (graph dots) at 70 degrees = 100% speed should have had the same effect, as the fan speed would increase linearly by 100% over 10 degrees in either scenario. I just like to use all the dots.

These values are an example. The key to quiet fans is to prevent them from switching speed at lower, "safe" temps, and instead to have them aggressively ramp up when the temperature goes over whatever value you're comfortable having the CPU run at over a longer period of time. Note, this isn't my approach with my graphics card, there I'm a bit more focused on avoiding thermal runaway and tend to have the card fans ramp up to 100% long before any thermal throttling would occur, as well as have them run faster at lower temps to prevent the near-throttle temps from ever occurring. In general, a graphics card will reduce its processing speed (core and/or memory clocks) before it hits a safe thermal limit - for my rx 480 the performance throttling temperature is 83 degrees, but the "safe" max temp is over 90. CPU's won't thermal throttle their processing capability (clock speed) based on temperature until they reach unsafe temperatures, so the motivation for fan speed curves is different for these two different scenarios.

Hope this helps some people out there, happy building :)

PC is Breadboarded and still won't stay on

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 01:29 PM PST

I bought my PC from a cousin about 3 years ago. He built it about 7-8 years ago. Parts have finally started dying on it, so over the last 2 weeks I've replaced the parts on it as they break.

I replaced the RAM and GPU after I got the computer (Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3, GTX 1060)

The other components are as follows

ASUS P8Z77-V LX MoBo Intel i5 3570k Seagate Barracuda 2TB PowerSpec 750W Bronze Some random unlabeled Heat Sink

All of my issues started after RDR2 released for PC. I bought the gae and installed it and of course had the issues basically everyone else had. (Stuttering, total loss of FPS, etc) so I closed the game and decided I would try it again in a few days. The next day I came home and the computer had blue screened. Turns out, my Hard drive had died overnight. New HDD, in boot up, golden. I decide to reinstall Rockstar launcher and RDR2 on the new HDD overnight. I wake up, go to work, come home, computer is frozen on the lock screen. 5 hours of troubleshooting everything under the sun and a trip to the PC repair shop to learn the MoBo is dead. Ok cool. I buy the same exact MoBo refurbished and like new and install it on monday. New thermal paste, everything is plugged in, computer boots up fine, great. Come home from work Tuesday, and as I'm working with it it would randomly cut off and restart. I overclock the GPU, update the graphical drivers just to be safe, and I'm feeling frisky and try to play RDR2 a third time. As I'm running the game and waiting for a benchmark test, the computer cuts off for the last time. At this point in my ownership I have replaced the Mobo, GPU, RAM, HDD, and today I replaced the PSU. New PSU, everything is plugged in, and this happens now.

    https://streamable.com/1pm74

Computer is breadboarded, nothing but RAM, CPU, Heat Sink, MoBo, and power and it still refuses to cut on. I'm dreading a new CPU purchase. Please tell me there's something I haven't done, or something I've done wrong, or I'm not crazy to blame RDR2 for all this. I stream and do youtube on the side so this past 2 weeks have been killing me mentally.

[UPDATE] My PC was pissed on last night, please help.

    Posted: 19 Nov 2019 02:09 PM PST

    Original Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/dwwl4k/my_pc_was_pissed_on_last_night_please_help/

Hello all of buildapc, here is my update on the status of my computer. I'd just like to clarify a couple things before because many of you got the wrong idea about the whole situation, mainly my fault because I left out a lot of details. The girl that urinated on my computer has been a friend of mine for over a year now. We're really good friends, she wasn't a random hookup. That's why small claims court or a police report isn't necessary. We actually talked about it in person yesterday and it went better than I thought. Aside from her obvious embarrassment, I tried to crack a couple jokes and help her realize it's just an awful situation all around, yet she shouldn't be embarrassed. She's aware that if anything is broken, she's going to have to pay me. She stated she's already saved up since the day after the incident just in-case. She's applied for food stamps and for another job, she's not doing well financially as is. It's awful because I really don't want to put my friend in the position of paying me a lot of money, but I don't have another choice if the PC turns out broken. I've also included an album consisting of multiple pictures regarding this incident. Many people don't believe this story, understandably, so I just wanted to clear it up. I also wanted to give a really big thank you to all of you in this subreddit. I received immediate advice on what to do to hopefully preserve my PC and you guys were obviously a lot more knowledgeable about the situation than I could ever be, so I appreciate all of you that were quick to give me advice.

    NSFW Album (urine) : https://imgur.com/gallery/CAexPq6

Now, onto the status of my computer. I cleaned it with distilled water and followed it up with 91% isopropyl alcohol, mainly due to the fact that I went to 15 different stores and none of them carried 99%. I gave extra attention to the components that I remember there being urine on. I let each individual part dry since Saturday afternoon. I just assembled everything I took out and attempted to power on. Unfortunately, when I clicked the power button, nothing happened. No fans spinning, no lights, nothing. Now there could be possibly two reasons why it's not powering up. First, when I pulled the dust cover from underneath my computer, I noticed there was dried urine directly below the PSU and nothing else (picture included within the album). That could mean that the urine had contact with my PSU or possibly went inside, but I'm not 100% sure. Another possibility could be that a few minutes after she peed on my computer and I removed the glass panel, there was pee everywhere yet mainly on the motherboard and top of my GPU. I have the Zotac RTX 2060 and MSI B450 Tomahawk. In regards to my GPU, there is a little open panel on top that I visibly remember there being pee on, and for my motherboard, I also visibly remember there being pee on the lower part of it and all around my CMOS battery. As advised I removed the battery right away (the next morning when I made the post) and wiped it down. Obviously, the reason why it didn't power on is one of these two.

Obviously it devastating that my PC didn't turn on yet I realize if it did, many of you said that there would be underlying damage to some components. I notified her that unfortunately it didn't power on. I told her I'm going to see if there are any parts that I am 100% safe to reuse for my next build and that I would reduce the amount she owes me accordingly. That leads me to my next question to you guys. What parts am I 100% safe for reusing for my next build? I think I'm going to definitely reuse my SSD, HDD, RAM, and case(after extensive cleaning.) am I safe to use anything else or should I just not risk it?

Hopefully I'm able to build my next PC soon, although that doesn't seem like the case. Again I appreciate everything you guys have done. This is such a powerful community and the fact that I received immediate assistance is overwhelming. Thank you all.

edit: alright guys i'm an idiot. i realized that the switch on the PSU was off. i turned it on and fans started spinning and lights came on. i noticed the CPU and VGA red lights on my motherboard came on then everything just completely shut off. now when i click it nothing happens. what does this mean?

Legit Sleeper Optiplex PC Finally Complete!

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 01:48 PM PST

Good day everyone, I felt like sharing my completed "Sleeper Optiplex" project. First off, yes I do have a lot of time on my hands lol. Secondly, my other rig has the "Traditional look." Late last year, my IT friend's office upgraded their hardware which meant they had handmedowns! He gave me 2 Optiplex 3010s. I Sold one and kept the other one. Its stock specs:

    • Dell 042P49 1155 socket mobo
    • i5 3470
    • 8gb (2x4gb) ram
    • 256gb ssd/win10pro & 500gb hdd
    • dvd drive
    • stock psu; only integrated gpu

He also gave me an i7 4790 (non K) in the box that was never installed in one of their other computers and just sat there for a couple years :-O. I gutted the entire 3010 to the power button wire. (Chassis fan, dvd drive, usb hub, and hdd cage all removed). Dell is non proprietary so I had to get their "best" mobo for that case. Only intended on OC'ing the gpu so it was all good. My friend had a plug for replacement parts too! Got a 4th gen mobo, 4 8gb sticks, and a 9020 front plate w/the usb hub for cheap. Time to Frankenstein:

    • Dell 0F5C5X 1150 socket mobo - $25 open box
    • Optiplex 9020 front plate & usb 3.0 hub - $15 used
    • i7 4790 ~4.0ghz -$0 never opened
    • 32gb (4x8gb 1600mhz matching Samsung) - $80 open box
    • EVGA GTX 1080 TI 11gb Founders Edition w/backplate - $425 used w/warranty (excellent condition)
    • 1tb ssd (2x500gb Samsung 860 & Crucial mx500) - $100 never opened
    • Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 650w fully modular - $90 new w/10 year warranty
    • 2 Corsair 120mm fans (intake & top) 1 92mm fan (exhaust; non Dell) - $20 open box
    • Wireless Logitech keyborad/mousepad - $20 new
    • Xbox 1X Bluetooth Controller - Gift new
    • Asus Wifi & Insignia Bluetooth Adapter - $20 never opened
    • Thermaltake TG-7 Themral Paste (good for non oc'ing) - $8
    • 2019 Samsung 43 RU7100 4k HDR display (4k & 1440p natively; ~10ms lag) - $200 (Guy was moving didn't need it)

PSU is top notch and I got it for a steal! Same with the GPU and is still a top 5 imo, especially with an OC. This can play anything at 1440p/high and above! Air Flow is good, and temps are phenomenal. Blower 1080ti with stong OC, 69-71deg max playing 4k/high for 5 hours. 4790 stock fan, 50-54 @4K & 66-69 @1440p. It may not be ideal for most, but I always wanted a "Wolf in sheep's clothing" PC. Case add ons are used along with GPU but it has warranty. I searched very hard for these deals but was definitely worth saving the money! 1440p/4K gaming for ~ $1,000 including display! :-D

Upgrading my PC, but going from ATX to mITX

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 10:23 AM PST

I have an old Intel i5-3570k PC that I'm looking to upgrade in the next few months. It's strictly used for gaming and web browsing, etc. But I want to make the new build a mITX build. My GPU is a MSI GTX 1070 that I"m going to carry over to the new build (because it still performs well for the games I play). I'm using a 1440p, 60Hz monitor. But otherwise I need a CPU, RAM, MOBO, and Case. I like the NZXT h210.

The real "debate" is whether to go with Intel or Ryzen. My gut says Ryzen 3600 is the best bet, but it doesn't seem like there are many mITX MOBO options on that side (I was considering the MSI B450i, but am turned off by the potential BIOS flash issue since I don't have another AMD CPU I can use to flash it). Maybe I'm missing something. But overall, is Ryzen still the budget recommendation even for mITX builds?

Will I have any issue keeping my PSU and SSD with this new build (assuming my PSU outputs enough power, I can't remember what model it is off the top of my head)?

Thinking about building my own PC this holiday, but am very overwhelmed with options.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 04:36 AM PST

There are just far too many options and combinations available and I'm freaking out a bit not gonna lie especially since it's so close to Black Friday here and I likely won't be able to afford to upgrade if I get ripped off for a looong time haha I live in Spain and pc parts are not quite as cheap as other countries as far as I know. I've been recommended the website "PC Componentes" by a friend, and having basically clicked a processor at random, it's giving me a list of "Commonly purchased with": * AMD RYZEN 7 2700X 3.7GHz €214,90 (€3,95 postage) * Corsair Vengeance LED DDR4 3000 PC4-24000 16GB 2x8GB CL15 €109 (€3,95 postage) *Asus TUF B450M-PRO Gaming MOTHERBOARD €104,90 (€5,25 postage) * Phanteks Eclipse P300 Cristal Templado USB 3.0 BLACK/RED TowerCase €59,99 (€6,25 postage) Now I know that this is missing a few things like a graphics card and cooling system (hoping someone could reccomend these parts) + windows license, etc. .. But would this be a good build and are the prices okay? Thanks in advance!

Trying to find a Freesync, IPS, 144 Hz, 1440p Monitor

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 10:55 AM PST

I've researched a bit online for a monitor fitting these specs but most of the times I come across either a G-Sync monitor or the monitor doesn't have IPS. I honestly don't mind TN but from what I've heard the color accuracy of those monitors is garbage. Also for monitor size I'm looking between 27 and 32 inches.

Edit: I found this post from 3 years back but its outdated.

    £1500 PC build by CHRISTMAS!

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 12:03 PM PST

    Hello,

Thanks for taking a look at my thread hopefully you are very knowledgeable and this task can be done quickly, rather then me spending days doing research. As I really don't have the time.

I haven't played PC for about 7 years. I want to build a Pc for Xmas. Buying the parts each week and spending my time over the holidays to assemble. (That's my idea of a fun Christmas 😉)

The problem I have is building the pc on paper and maximising my budget with the best possible components. I am a complete novice but I'm pretty practical so assembling it should be fine. But building the pc on paper, not missing any components and getting the best for my money. That's the hard part.

    Please help.

    Thanks.

Building a ryzen based pc for a friend on a budget of around $600. He already has case and an RX580. How does this build look? Im wondering if the lower latency memory is worth the extra $30-$40 over 16 cas, I have never build an AMD based machine before. Ive seen people saying that Frequency trumps latency up to around 3500...so would it be a better idea to go with 16 CAS 3600?

I was supposed to be getting around 900 as a bonus but it ended up being only 500 so Ill be harvesting the SSD, HD and ram from my current PC until I can upgrade. Anything I should change/upgrade around this similar price range? Ive determined Illl get the 5700 XT over the 2060 Super. Thanks!

    The case I just like.

    Repurposing a tablet?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 10:40 AM PST

I bought a Teclast X80 Pro about a year ago, and considering it gave me a portable windows device for 80 bucks, it served its purpose. But now it no longer powers on/charges (undiagnosed issue) so if I open it up and provide continuous power via USB (micro) can I use it like an SBC? It has 2gb of ddr3 and a z3735f CPU (maybe 3775 actually)

My PC shuts off, Burning smell from motherboard

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 12:48 PM PST

I don't know if this a right place to ask, but here we go...

So, My PC is like 5-6 years old. I'm mostly using it to encode movies with handbrake. When it was encoding a movie today, suddenly my pc turned off and turned back on, and I immediately turned it off because I smelled something burning. So I removed all of the components in the case and looked for burnt parts and this is what I found on the motherboard:

My cpu and psu are fine. I don't know about the other components but I don't think they are damaged. What I wanna know is why that part of the motherboard is burned and is it okay to continue to use it?

Edit: this is my motherboard: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product/Product_Overview/EN/Motherboard/H81H3-M4%20-LL-V1-DO-0A-RR-/Socket%201150

Build ready, but questions about RAM/GPU for 3900x

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 07:45 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Running many virtual machines at once. Photoshop/Lightroom 1080 and 4k video editing Gaming (Far Cry, PUBG, Project Cars, DexusEx)

Need 64GB Need quiet Need stable Need 5.25" opening for bluray

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    2560x1440 60fps / high/ultra / 3x1440p looking at playing with VR

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $2400

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    US

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please)..

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tcN9Nq

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Set on the CPU/Mobo (I want the core count and audio DAC).
Wondering if I really need to get RAM from the Mobo's approved list (there are only two 16GB chips there). Intend to at least use XMPfor mild RAM overclock

    Wondering about GPU. Price/performance/noise

Will likely get a fast/stable 1TB NVME for c: and a fast 1TB NVME for secondary (cold storage is a DS918+)
