    My life in computer processors

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:23 PM PST

I framed all the processors I've owned over the years. Each one is a phase from my life, putting this together was surprisingly nostalgic. It's been fun how each one brings back so many memories. The shadowboxes are 3d printed, cricut vinyl for the labels, I even cut the glass myself too. Not pictured is the 2600x that was handed down to my 14 year old son when he built his own computer and the 3600x I am typing this on.

First Build: PC shows no signs of life (no fan spin, no motherboard LEDs turning on, etc)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:38 AM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    CPU: Ryzen 5, 5600x

MOBO: MSI B550 Gaming Edge Wifi

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance 3200

    STORAGE: WD Blue 550, 1TB

    GPU: Gigabyte 5700 xt

PSU: Seasonic FOCUS 650 (fully modular)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

So I received my final part yesterday (PSU) and the first thing I did was to attempt to do a BIOS update for the MOBO, using the BIOS Flashback button on the back of the board.

The issue I kept running into was that the LEDs on the MOBO and my USB drive would flash. The MOBO flashed 10 times (this is the only indication I get that the board has power) and completely shut off after about 5 seconds and the LED on the USB turned solid. I let it sit for ~10 minutes, just in case it was still updating, but from all I have read, the flash should take anywhere from 3-5 minutes, indicating it's completed once the board stops flashing. I tried another USB drive, but ran into the same issue.

Thinking the flash was done, I decided to build at this point. Put everything together, connected the cables, connected the front panel connectors, but it shows no signs of life when I press the power button. I'm devastated.

Is it possible the MOBO was DOA?

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Ensured everything is connected properly, even tried to short the power pins but absolutely nothing happens.

I have no way to to swap/test components to diagnose what might be causing the problem, other than the PSU (with the tester it came with), I've attempted looking online to see if they encountered the flash issue (blink 10 times then stop), but have not been able to find anything.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Here are some pics. I know the power supply is unplugged here but it wasn't when I was testing.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

The case I have was bought used, and I realized a few of the standoffs were stripped. I don't know if the standoffs act as a ground in any way, could this be the issue?

Mentally exhausted from seeing "Out of Stock"

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:55 AM PST

I've been in the process of replacing my old prebuilt that died in September -- the psu fried everything except my cpu. rip rx570. Luckily, I was able to replace everything except a graphics card.

At the time, the RTX 3000 cards were already released and everyone was struggling hard to purchase one. They're still struggling now.

I play Apex Legends competitively with a 1080p 165hz monitor. I needed something better than my old rx570 that could utilize the full refresh rate, which lead me to the 5700XT. After hours & hours of watching benchmark videos, it had the perfect fps performance I needed, comparatively to the 2070 super. It also sold for way less than its Nvidia counterparts.

Then came the biggest problem: stock availability & pricing. Okay, I thought "so I figured out what card would deliver the right performance, now what are the cons?" The AMD card was notorious for having severe driver issues, on top of having worse encoding quality on obs. As a streamer, that's a pretty major problem when comparing it to the RTX cards. NVENC seemed like the simple way to go...until I looked at the prices & availability. The RTX cards were sold at twice their respective MSRP values. Disgustingly high.

    I waited.

The 5700XT prices remained stable. I just needed to get paid, then the choice was clear & simple. Unfortunately, by that time, those cards faced the same fate as the Nvidia ones.

    "Out of Stock"

I'm still waiting weeks later, but w/ a bigger budget now. I also still want a PowerColor Red Devil, the RX 6800 version this time (hoping it lowers from fucking $700 to a reasonable price close to reference MSRP).

Overall, I don't think it's right to keep the market like this, for consumers who just want to enjoy todays products. Scalpers have too much control & power over the supply. AMD and Nvidia seem to have little to no influence, no communication, no care for the outcome. They sell all their inventory regardless. I'm just mentally exhausted at this point -- I don't know enough to get ahead. I've joined several discords, checked twitter, and signed up for alerts. Doesn't seem to change anything in the bigger picture. Anyone else feel the same?

    Was I a fool to get a 3070 instead of the 3060ti?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:14 AM PST

With the reviews and benchmarks of the 3060ti coming out I can't help but feel like I may have overspent on my 3070. Don't get me wrong I am absolutely happy with the 3070 but am I wrong for feeling like I could've saved a few more bucks had I just waited?

Considering switching to PC: Any advice is appreciated

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:47 AM PST

As the title states I am considering switching to PC gaming after my Xbox One broke. Upon discovering that my Xbox broke I have been contemplating between upgrading consoles or switching over to PC. I have recently started gaming a lot more than I did before (lockdowns not all bad) and I think that I could benefit from a PC. The problem is that I am a noob when it comes to PC's and know little to nothing. The main games that I will be playing on the PC will be Warzone, Madden, Cities Skyline, and Sea of Thieves. On top of gaming I will use the PC to run Serato, a DJ software.

So, I have spent that past couple nights researching for hours a night. I have been jumping back and forth between YouTube and pcpartpicker, both of which have been very helpful. I have gathered a potential list for my first build and would really appreciate if any of you veterans would give it a look and give me any recommendations. All I've went off of so far is videos, forums, and reviews. I really do not want to make a purchase of this magnitude without some human opinion, so please do let me know any pieces that may not be the best they could be in the price category they are in.

Below is the link to my list. I really do appreciate it as I'm sure this has been posted many times before. Thanks in advance.

    Upgraded PC bliss

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:37 AM PST

    A few days ago I upgraded from a 5 year old i5 4400/r9 380/8gb RAM build to a 5 3600/1660S/16gb ram

I just wanted to tell someone how amazing it is to have a responsive, snappy PC. That plays games at 60fps (I cap it here using v sync, it could probably go higher) on high settings effortlessly. My old machine wasn't a slouch, but you could definitely sense that it had to put a lot of effort into running applications, whereas now my pc acts like anything I throw at it is no big deal.

Just wanted to say that as nobody I tell IRL really appreciates wtf I'm talking about.

If anyone cares, I spent about £700 and hoping to sell my old machine for about £150? Bringing the cost down to £550, definitely worth while investment as this will last another 5 years at least

Upgraded to 3080 and have had a weird monitor issues since

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:57 PM PST

I upgraded to a EVGA 3080, but since i installed my card i cant have more than one monitor plugged in during startup or it wont show any display and the VGA led on my motherboard lights up. I have to only have one display plugged in during boot and only once that monitor shows display can i plug in the second monitor. It works if both are plugged in and i go to bios, though it only shows on one display.

Things i have tried to fix it

    • Took out and reslotted the gpu.

    • Fully uninstalled gpu drivers with DDU and reinstalled drivers after

    • Updated my motherboard bios and reset to optimized defaults

    • switched from using two displayport cables to using one displayport and one hdmi

    • purchased a displayport certified cable

Another thing is that the issue didnt happen when i went into sleep mode instead of shut off until about a week ago. Nothing noteworthy happened between the day it worked and the next day that it didnt work.

One other odd thing is that after i reinstalled the gpu drivers, it defaulted to a weird 4:3 aspect ratio, with 1650*1050 resolution.

Both my monitors are VG278Q, Motherboard is a X470 aorus ultra gaming, cpu is a 3700x, psu is a 750w corsair.

Would appreciate any help as this is just a simply annoying issue, even though it doesnt affect any actual performance or usability once my pc is started.

Is my PC 3060 ti Compatible?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:13 AM PST

Looking to build a new PC in the next year, but am trying to get a little more life out of a computer I built about 6 years ago until I do. This is the pc build I have and am wondering if swapping my SLI gtx 970s with a single 3060 ti will be of much help for gaming. I like playing games like Tomb Raider, Total War, GTA, and Assassin's Creed, but since I purchased a 34" 1440p monitor, it's been tough gaming without the graphics really taking a hit.

    Thoughts?

Should I buy the 1650 super, 1660 super, or the 5600 XT with these prices?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:59 AM PST

Hello! The graphics card market isn't the best right now, but luckily I'm able to get a few deals left. At my local microcenter, there's a 5600 xt for $300, $200 for the 1650 super, and $265 for the msi 1660 super. Which one would be the most worth it for 1080p gaming with a 165 hz monitor? :) thanks!

Computer just beeps, won’t turn on. (Vid in post). Any ideas?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:39 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

Rather than take my PC in to get fixed I wanted to try my hand at a repair myself, but not sure exactly what's wrong.

I usually leave my computer on overnight just out of habit, and woke up this morning to a very loud fan sound.

I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on to see what happens, and it won't boot up at all.

Here's the vid of its failing in action.

    https://streamable.com/djgyac

It's an HP Elite Desk 800g1 if that's useful.

I'm working from home on this one, so thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have!

    Cheers

Update: I removed one of the RAM sticks and it worked fine.

What would cause the abnormally loud fan sound before turning it off this morning?

Update 2: Out of curiosity, I switched the RAM slot locations and it also booted fine.

    Weird.

USB 2.0 ports flaky on new build. Mouse/keyboard hang/stutter

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:41 PM PST

    This is my build.

The USB 2.0 ports on the motherboard are flaky. The mouse and keyboard, when plugged into those top two ports on the motherboard, frequently hang. I'll move the mouse, and the cursor freezes for a second or so, multiple times every minute. Mouse clicks often don't register. The keyboard also hangs, where it doesn't register some key presses. Both mouse and keyboard work perfectly when I plug them into USB 3.2 ports on the motherboard.

I sent this to MSI support, and they just told me:

Please try with clearing the cmos setting on Jbat1 jumper/SW1 Switch or removing the battery on the mb out for 1 minute and put it back in with power off. Please test out the mb and components outside the case with mb box to support the board. This can prevent any short or grounding problem to the mb and the components. Remove all connection/installation of add on cards, drives, and extra cable connection from the mb. Try with bare minimum components installed only. If all steps have been tried and problem still persists then please kindly refer to our website for manufacturer warranty RMA info/request: https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/rma_form.aspx

Since I've completed my build and it works fine using alternate USB ports, I hardly want to take everything out of the case to debug their USB ports.

Has anyone else seen this, or have anything else to try?

(At first I thought it was my RAM, but I even tried other RAM and the problem persisted. I did reset the CMOS before and after trying the other RAM. Note also that the mouse/keyboard are plugged into a USB hub and extension cable, for ease of switching from desktop to work laptop, though this setup works fine everywhere except those USB 2.0 ports. It also exhibited the same problem with my USB card reader expansion panel unplugged.)

PCIE 4.0 and exhausting the lanes *QUESTION*

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:14 AM PST

Alrighty, so I have my X570 Tomahawk Mobo, and I'm almost ready to go with all of my parts. I was waiting on a good deal for PCIE 4.0 drives, and then I remembered that I don't want to do something that would make one of these drives run at slower speeds due to taking up all of the lanes.

It appears that the X570 chipset has 24 lanes (according to what I could find). 16 are for the GPU, 4 for storage, and 4 for Chipset downlink?

I currently have a 5800x, X570 Tomahawk, and plan on getting a current gen GPU. What I'm wondering is if it is possible to get 2 PCIE 4.0 drives to work at their intended speeds on this mobo? The reason I ask is because there were some really attractively priced PCIE 4.0 drives yesterday, but only for the 1TB version, so I decided that I should get 2 of these, instead of one 2TB drive. I was concerned that if I did that, I could be hampering the speed of the second one.

I know that PCIE 4.0 drives won't make a huge difference in how I work/game, but I just like building for the future, and want to use as much of the capabilities that my system has as possible. Any help is appreciated.

If I can only use one PCIE 4.0 drive, then I will most likely fill the second slot with a much cheaper PCIE 3.0 nvme SSD.

    Thanks!

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:03 AM PST

I have this old AMD FX-8350 Black edition laying around with 16gb of DDR3 ram, a compatible motherboard, a case and an Nvidia 7600 GT (I know, bleh) laying around.

I built a newer gaming pc, but I havent a clue what to do with these old parts, it feels wrong leaving them dormant, but I cant really think of how to repurpose them. Anybody have any ideas for what I could do with them? Im open to anything really.

    First Time Build

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:32 PM PST

Hello, This is my first time building a PC, and i'm assuming my part list sucks, so I thought I should run it by an online community before ordering. I have very low budget, and ideally would be under 1k. My current list puts mr over that, but that's another reason i'm here. Because I know very little about PC parts, there's most likely some parts that bottleneck each other, or are overall a bad deal. TIA!

EDIT: Should probably mention, I mostly play Minecraft, but it would also be used for Ark, and TF2.

    3080 for 900€ or 3090 for 1500€

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:41 AM PST

Hey so I managed to get a 3090 FE at Release, then I was worried it was too much money and bought a 3080 TUF oc last week. Nvidia still haven't sent me the return label so I have both cards on my hand right now. Which one should I keep? (No I'm not scalping the other card, it gets returned to the seller no matter which one I keep because I hate scalping.)

My resolution is 1440p @240 and my CPU is a 5800x.

price for the 3090 was 1500€ and 900€ for the TUF

first time dad needing advise on 2x8gb 3600mhz ram kits

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:17 AM PST

still rocking a 4690k i5 + gtx 1070 and finally pulled the trigger to upgrade after 6years. ordered a 5600x and an msi mpg b550 carbon wifi. I don't keep track of tech and a bit overwhelmed with the new stuff nowadays.

need your advice what 3600mhz 2x8gb cl18 ram to buy. it came down to what's readily available where I live:

TEAM GROUP T-Force Dark Za (ALPHA) $85

    G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB $78

    PNY Epic-X XLR8 16GB $89

    G Skill Trident Z Neo 16GB $112

Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB $130

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB $100

3600mhz cl16 kits are very expensive here in my country that's why i have to settle on cl18 for the mean time (and allocate funds on baby needs). I'm not concerned about RGB but ill consider it if partnered with good performance. also, is it true that 3200mhz cl16 kits are also good choices for 5600x? I really need, and will greatly appreciate, your advice here guys.

    Thanks in advance!
