My PC just randomly caught fire. Please assist!

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 04:06 AM PST

So my ~3 year old self-built PC just caught fire while gaming. I heard a fizzling noise and looked down and saw a red glow and some smoke coming out of the top case vents. The pc was still running at this point, with no sign of hardware failure. I immediately unplugged everything and took the sides off the case. Some of the cables were actually on fire, so I smothered the part that was burning with a fire blanket. After a couple of minutes the smoke stopped, and now I'm trying to assess the damage.

I don't go to great lengths to maintain the PC, and the cable management might not be perfect. But this was totally unexpected. I've never had any hardware issues, not even a bluescreen in all the years it's been running.

It looks like one of the cables from the PSU which was connected to a CD drive has totally melted, but not at the point of connection. It has multiple connectors on it, but only one was plugged in. The others were sort of hanging down and potentially made contact with a metal part of the inside of the case. Perhaps this was the cause? See pic related

    https://m.imgur.com/a/cntyB2I

I need to know what steps to take to get my pc safely running again. Please assist!

Helpful advice to choosing parts for a new build

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 11:00 AM PST

A lot of people when they first begin their build idea don't know where to begin. This is advice I wish someone gave me back in days I first began building long ago.

    tldr: don't buy a 2080ti for a 1080p monitor

    Gaming

It all begins with your monitor and expectations

First you must decide, what resolution whether that be 1080p, 1440p, 4k and refresh rate.

If going for 4k at 60hz, you will get to your GPU second. "Okay I'll probably need a 2080 super or a 2080ti for 4k and 60hz" Or "okay I'll need a 5700xt or 2070 Super for 1440p"

Once you've decided on your gpu you'll need to figure out an adequate power supply that can support it.

After you've decided your power supply taking into account your future upgrade path and current needs, decide on your CPU.

Ideally you'll want to select the CPU that lets your GPU operate at its full potential avoiding bottleneck.

Once you know your CPU you can decide on the rest, in order...motherboard fits the CPU, Ram that is compatible with the motherboard, storage etc etc.

Don't begin selecting builds based on the motherboard or CPU if you are building towards a gaming computer because these things are irrelevant till you select your beginning parts.

Obviously if you have future proofing in mind you'll need to account for that. Like this scenario, "ok I can game at 1080p right now but I'll want an upgrade path to 1440p 144hz. I can get a cheaper GPU for now and get a larger PSU and faster CPU to support a beefier GPU later on.

    Work Station

These are slightly different as they prioritize a different component.

For video editing, 3D modeling, working etc etc. You'll need to select your CPU first. Research this component and how it will effectively reach your goals.

After selecting your CPU, select your motherboard, RAM,GPU, PSU, and then monitor.

Anyways I hope this helps anyone out that is having trouble with a starting points when thinking about their ideal build. Remember to account for future proofing if you need to.

Should I build a PC myself?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 04:14 AM PST

    Kinda useless question I guess.

I'm going to build my first pc. I have watched like tons n tons of videos because I was researching for part and because I got very enthusiastic about PC hardware in the recent years. So I do know what to do. It looks very fun and I would love to do it myself but I'm nervous I might fuck something up. Blow up a part or the whole PC lol. Should I let the local PC guy do it? Or DEW IT myself.

    Edit. Here's the build btw.

    Gaming for 1080p and 144hz?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 08:25 AM PST

I was considering getting a 5700XT or a 2070S for gaming at the specs listed in the title but thinking this might be overkill. Would the 2060S be a better choice in terms of the specs I want to game at? Thanks!

The thing I know I should for sure do is look on manufacturer's sites for driver updates, but is there anything else I should do as well? Thanks for any help!

    Upgrading my PC from 2013!

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 09:24 AM PST

OK! So I'm still running a build I made in 2013, all was fine until about a month ago... I've been having trouble with (i think) my power supply. Random freezes, reboots, with no blue screen, just bam power gone, or it becomes unresponsive.

    My build was:

    CPU: AMD FX-8320 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.0GHz Turbo) Socket A

GRAPHICS: (I upgraded this along the way) Asus GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6 GB 20th Anniversary Gold Edition Video Card

    POWER :hec Zephyr MX 750 750W Peak Output ATX12V V2.3 / E

RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR

    STORAGE: Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Ca -

    MOBO: BIOSTAR TA970 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

CASE: HEC 63R3BR Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case -

I was thinking about just upgrading the power supply, but then I realized that it might be tricky to get the right one with my older stuff now. Then I thought about how my ram is a generation behind now.... then mobo.... then... lol. I'm thinking of holding out on the video card for now, but upgrading basically everything else. How does it look? Any costs I can cut? Any dumb things? Thank you in advance for checking out my old dusty build! PCPartPicker Part List

    Few questions about upgrading

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 11:57 AM PST

Upgrading my PC So i have a few questions about upgrading my build i think its time i've experienced some issues with CPU maxing out in games while my gpu is 30-40% usage. I play at 1080p 144hz.

    My current build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RrP6vV

This is what i was thinking to upgrade to https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xCX8YH

On amazon it says the motherboard is ryzen 3 ready so i assume wont have to update bios?

My CPU cooler i dont think will be useable without a mounting adapter i couldnt find where to get one on the cryorig site do i just get a new cooler?

Also my ram is only 2400 is it necessary to upgrade that i'd rather not if i don't have to.

    PC wont turn on

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 11:37 AM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    AMD Ryzen 3 2200G

Asus PRIME A320M-K and Gigabyte A320M-S2H

    Adata XPG Flame 4GB DDR4 2400mhz

    EVGA 550GD

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

The PC wont turn on on either motherboard with the mentioned 2200G.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Already tried with both motherboards having the same results. On the gigabyte the onboard led was disabled so I cant double check it but on the Asus one the leds turn on when the processor is seated, but still wont turn on. Already tried with a couple of known working other power supplies without luck.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Is there a way to ensure that the processor is broken? It was working fine but it eventually started "turning on whenever it liked" until it escalated to dont turning on at all.

    Any Suggestions?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 01:35 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/H9D8Mc

Hey, all this is the build im considering. I am thinking the following about it so far, please give me suggestions or correct me.

    1) CPU leaning towards i7 9700K- I have heard it outperforms the i9

    2) CPU cooling fan - not too sure about this. Currently have NZXT Kraken M22, so either way, I'll want a new one. So the only thing is I'm fairly certain I'll need to move the fan for that from the back of the case to the front, hopefully, there is room.

    3) Motherboard- no idea, any suggestions. Currently, what's in the link is what I'm thinking

    4) RAM- any suggestions. Currently, what's in the link is what I'm thinking

The rest of the PC I already have. So the GPU, PSU, Storage, and case. Currently, have an i5 CPU (ouch I know.)

Any suggestions are helpful, so please post!

    Good upgrade form a Ryzen 3 1200?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 01:27 PM PST

Got a Ryzen 3 1200 last year, that was a huge step up from my fx-6300 that I had for about 4 years before it. I have a GTX 1060, and 8gb of ram, so right now the only thing holding me back from better performance is my cpu. Christmas is coming up and I'm going to use some of the money that I'm going to get and get a new cpu, and some more ram. So what would be the best upgrade? I'm probably going to get a little over $300, but taking out the cost of the ram, I'll probably have $260 left to get a cpu.

    XMP won't work x570/Ryzen 3600

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 11:11 AM PST

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 4 CPU Cooler

Mobo: MSI X570-A PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard

    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 C18 Memory

Storage: Crucial P1 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive + SanDisk SSD PLUS 480 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB WINDFORCE OC 3X Video Card

I built this PC a couple of months ago, and overall very satisfied with the performance of it. However, I have not been able to enable the XMP profile for my RAM without the system failing to post. I was hoping a couple of BIOS updates for these x570 boards would help with memory compatibility but nothing seems to have progressed. My RAM is on the qualified vendors list. Through MSI's memory try it feature I'm running my RAM at 3333 16-18-18-18-42, which is arguably still respectable but can't go any higher than this frequency wise. I have tried increase the infinity clock seperately but no luck.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is it more likely to be faulty ram, mobo, or CPU? I have no other parts to test unfortuately, but have been thinking about getting some better rated RAM - don't want to go and buy some if its been my mobo all along?

    Thanks in advance!

    9900k vs 3900X

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 01:05 PM PST

As the title says, I'll be upgrading my gaming rig soon and can't quite decide between the i9-9900k or the Ryzen 3900X. It'll be paired with a 2080 Super, maybe a 2080 ti if there are any good sales. I'll primarily use this machine for gaming, but also work in Visual Studio. Which CPU would ultimately be better?
