    Simple Questions - November 13, 2019

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I built my first Micro ITX PC as a birthday gift for my brother.

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 05:55 AM PST

    Main pic

More pics and build list here: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/6bmqqs

    Benchmarks:

    Details:

The goal was to create a clean modern looking mITX build for my brother, who has a career in Industrial Design, as a birthday surprise! I know he is obsessed with design and aesthetics while also achieving performant functionality. He really liked the design of the black & white NZXT H210 so I ran with that as the build inspiration. This budget mindful PC is an upgrade replacing his old dying cyberpower pre-built.

    • CPU: I chose a Ryzen 2700X because 8 cores & 16 threads should crush industrial / graphic design workloads (mostly rendering hi-res images and CAD models) and it also makes a great gaming CPU. I enabled PBO to get a solid 4.05ghz @ 1.362v all core boost clock under all core load while still getting 4.3ghz @ 1.48v on single core loads. The stock Wraith Prism cooler is doing a great job keeping the CPU at less than 73c even during benchmarks and stress testing while looking sexy.

    • Motherboard: I went with the Gigabyte Aorus B450 I Pro WiFi since it offers a great set of features including 1.7gb/s AC WiFi, a solid 4+2 phase VRM, great RAM support, and a nice black & brushed silver design that nicely fits the build's aesthetic. I was also pleased to discover that this Mobo has a wide array of sensors including temp sensors for both the CPU and SoC VRM mosfets! I was also pleasantly surprised at the row of rear facing RGB lights that produce a nice RGB back-lit affect.

    • RAM: the 2x8 GB G.Skill Flare X 3200cl16 kit turned out to be a Hynix AFR and I was able to easily use the Ryzen DRAM Calculator to overclock to 3400 16-17-17-17-30 @ 1.41v which is tighter than stock timings. Benchmarked at 62ns latency which is pretty decent!

    • GPU: The MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X was re-used from my brother's dying pre-built. I am seriously impressed how well this GPU performs and overclocks. I used MSI Afterburner to push a +105 core and +500 memory overclock Which resulted in a 2088mhz core clock and 4500mhz memory clock. Temps are staying under 70c during sustained gaming and benchtest loads. The fans at 100% are not terribly loud and don't produce any high pitched whine.

    • SSD: the Sabrent Rocket PCIe M.2 SSD performs really well and maintains temps under 40c. Nice and clean with no wires and no issues so far.

    • Case: the NZXT H210 is amazing. It looks great and is an absolute pleasure to build in. The cable management is really well thought out and the psu shroud helps keep a clean look but also has vent holes to allow better airflow for the GPU. I was concerned about airflow since it has a solid front panel but that was not an issue with this case since it takes 2x 140mm fans in the front with ample sized vents. The new single thumbscrew tempered glass panel mount is pretty nice too.

    • PSU: the EVGA G5 650w is a bit overkill for this build since it draws half the power but that was intentional since this PSU has an ECO / silent feature which doesn't turn the PSU fan on until needed, usually at > 50% load. On a side note I kinda wish I had used a SFF PSU in this case since it would let the GPU get slightly better airflow through the shroud.

    • Fans & Cooling: the NZXT H210 comes with 2x 3 pin 120mm fans mounted as exhaust in the back and top, they are very quiet and not audible at 100% speed. I added 2x 140mm Be Quiet! 3 pin fans and they move a lot of air while being absolutely inaudible from outside the case. This combination seems to work really well and is very quiet. The only fans you can slightly hear are the CPU and GPU when the spin up to 100% but the case and it's tempered glass really mitigate sound well.

Overall I'm ecstatic how well this build turned out! It performs really well and looks even better than I had hoped!

Also a shout out to MicroCenter for having great deals like the 2700X for only $159 and the CPU & Mobo $30 bundle discount that brought the Mobo down to only $89!

Edit: This is not my first build, just my first Mini ITX build. Here is my personal build: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/QknH99

Is the trade-off of losing FPS for better visuals when going from 1080p to 1440p worth it?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 04:44 AM PST

So I want to ask if any of you have experience with this. I'm mostly talking about losing FPS when you're trying to hit high refresh rates such as 144hz.

In my scenario, I mostly play competitive games such as CS:GO, LoL, R6: Siege and the new CoD: MW. I'm planning to build a new PC using 5700 XT and Ryzen 3700 with 16GB RAM (3600 MHz CL 16).

Is (i7 4790K Used) still good for Modern titles today ?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 06:10 AM PST

I have a z97 motherboard with 12 GiGs of RAM with GTX 1070.

The only problem i am having is the processor selection for this old motherboard.

I did find an (i7 4790K Used) here worth around ($205 USD).

Just wanted to ask if it is really worth that price .. or should i just go for cheap i5s and i3s. (assuming the performance difference is not too much) ??

Any suggestions will be appreciated .. thanks ..

You guys are awesome in every way. I was fairly new into PC gaming and building but I have learned so much from everyone here. Even when I asked the dumbest and most obvious questions, I would still get a positive answer and i appreciate that. I had trouble deciding my parts but with the community's help here, I was guided in the right direction and ill be putting together my first build within the next couple of weeks. Thanks to everyone here for being awesome!

Probable release of RTX 3000 series in June 2020 : Should we wait for it or go for black Friday ?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 01:12 PM PST

Recently a few articles popped on the internet about a possible announcement in march 2020 and a release of RTX 3000 series card in june (here is an example: https://wccftech.com/nvidia-introducing-ampere-in-march-2020-releasing-rtx-3080-in-june-analyst-indicates/ )

TL;DR : The essential question of this thread is the following : If one would like to buy a high end GPU (say RTX 2080 Ti) is it worth to look for a good deal at the black Friday, or is it better to wait for the RTX 3000 ?

Although the question is quite generic (and generic discussion are more than welcome on this thread) here is my specific situation :

I am a PhD student in deep learning. At the lab I'm working at, there are GPU clusters to run our experiments on. However it happens from time to time that that all the GPUs are busy. Therefore I'd like to buy my own RTX 2080 Ti to be kind of independent just in case. Of couse, I would use it as well to game on it when it won't be used to train my models.

I can afford a RTX 2080 Ti, and moreover, with the black Friday coming, I was hopping for a nice deal in order to get a RTX 2080 Ti for around 1000/1100€. However since this is quite a big expense I wonder if it would be better to wait for the next gen, especially because the RTX 2080 Ti is already more than a one year old (launched in September 2018).

EDIT: The purpose of waiting is to buy a RTX 3080 (Ti), not waiting for the new generation while hoping that the current generation prices decreases

I notice so many people posting, "help with build for my cousin."

or "help with build for my dad."

And can I just say, it is so cool to see our generous community trying to bring others in even when its 500+ dollars.

I was inspired and am working on building a new PC with my neighbor.

maybe it's just because we want a new steam friend to go on looting trips with, but I'm happy to be apart of it.

    Is overclocking RAM worth it?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 01:05 PM PST

I have a GSkill 16GB (2x8GB) DR4 3000 MHz C16 and I have a Ryzen 2600x and was wondering if there is really any benefit on overclocking my RAM.

Upgrading from 2015. Doublecheck my new build? ($1200-1350)

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 10:59 AM PST

I was planning on simply swapping out the CPU and GPU, but I got the "if you give a mouse a cookie" bug. If I wanted to upgrade my CPU, I'd need a newer mobo to do it. If I'm upgrading my mobo, I'd need to speed up the RAM. Now, I have a new build I'm almost ready with, but would love to have y'all double check it and make sure that I have everything right before I pull the trigger.

I have 2 screens. Which one should I use?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 12:10 PM PST

I'm currently saving up for a good 144hz monitor, but until then I have to make a choice between the ones I currently have. Should I use a 13in 144hz screen that came with my laptop, or a 24in 60hz monitor. I'm going to be playing competititve games such as overwatch and csgo, so the 13in might be too small, but the larger monitor has lower hz.

PC wont boot. CPU light is blinking

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 01:15 PM PST

    Hello,

Just got all my components together (except GPU) and after putting them all together I've got light on the power button on my MoBo but when I got to boot the PC the red CPU light blinks and it seems to constantly try to startup.

Parts are: I9-9900K Z390 Aorus Master 16GB (2x8) 3600 corsair vengeance rgb Corsair RM650 psu

I've tried re setting the cpu and made sure there weren't any bent pins. Tried various RAM configs and double checked everything is plugged in.

I'm not sure what else could be causing it except a DOA CPU but I wanna make sure that I've tried everything else.

The PC turns on for 10 seconds and then turns off, and turns back on for 10 seconds and repeats. On my previous post someone told me to reseat the RAM, i unplugged them both and plugged one back in and it worked. Then i plugged both of them in and it didn't work, and just tried out different things and some gave me a post and some didn't. Now i can't get a post no matter which RAM stick goes into which dimm slot. Ive tried all the possibilities but it doesn't seem to work now. Did me plugging it in and taking it out alot break something or is there a different problem. Thanks for any help

    Should I upgrade to 5700 from rx580?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 10:32 AM PST

As the title says, I'm planning on getting a new gpu soon. I have an r5 1600 cpu (might upgrade that soon as well but i haven't felt a need to yet) and an XFX rx580 8gb.

I use a 144hz 1080p monitor and the only gpu intensive task I do is gaming. So is the 5700 a worth upgrade ? I don't struggle to run anything on the rx580 but now is the best time for me to upgrade financially. If not the 5700 then what is a worthy upgrade for around 300$ ? Let me know what you guys think. Obviously it will perform better then the 580, but is it the best upgrade for the price ?

I can build it myself but I've only built gaming PCs and I don't want to buy parts she won't need because I am on somewhat of a budget.

    Upgrade Advice

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 12:26 PM PST

So I'm planning on getting a few upgrades for my new pc this Black Friday. I'll be adding 16 gb of ram to my current 8 gb and I'm looking for a new processor. I currently have a Ryzen 3 2200G and I can't decide whether or not to get the Ryzen 5 2600 or the 3600. Would the 2600 be alright for modern titles or should I just go big or go home with the 3600?
