My take on 27" 4K monitors: they're useless and not ideal, aim for 1440p

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:43 AM PDT

I've seen a lot of hype around 4K gaming monitors as the new Nvidia GPUs will supposedly have the power to drive that. My thoughts are: yes you'll be able to run 4K at acceptable refresh rates, but you don't need to, and you probably don't want to either.

    First of all, some disclaimers:

    • If you play on a TV, 4K is fine. 4K TVs dominate the market, and finding a good non-4K one is way harder in 2020. But I'm specifically talking about PC monitors here.

    • 2K isn't a monitor resolution, stop saying 2K to mean 2560x1440. If it existed, it would mean "half 4K" so 1920x1080 <- pet peeve of mine, but I lost this battle a long time ago

    • French speakers can find my ramblings on this post with more details and monitor recommendations. I hope I translated it right, if not sorry for my terrible English mistakes.

    Resolution and pixel density

Or "which resolution is ideal at which size". What you need to look for on a monitor is the ratio between size and resolution : pixel density (or Pixel Per Inch/PPI). PPI tolerence varies between people, but it's often between 90 (acceptable) to 140 (higher is indistinguishable/has diminishing returns). Feel free to use the website https://www.sven.de/dpi/ to calculate your current PPI and define your own range.

With this range in mind, we can make this table of common sizes and resolutions:

    24" 27" 32" 34"
    (FHD) 1080p 92 82 69 64
    (QHD) 1440p 122 109 92 86
    (UHD) 2160p 184 163 137 130

As you can see 1080p isn't great for higher sizes than 24" (although some people are ok with it at 27"), and 4K is too well defined to make a difference.

In my experience as someone who has been using cheap 1440p@60Hz monitors for a while, 32" is where it starts to be annoying and I'd consider 4K.

    Screen "real estate"

A weird term to define how much space you have on your monitor to display windows, text, web pages... The higher the resolution, the more real estate you have, but the smaller objects will become. Here's the comparison (from my own 4K laptop) to how much stuff you can display on 3 different resolutions : FHD, QHD, 4K UHD. Display those in full screen on your monitor and define at which point it becomes too small to read without effort. For most people, 4K at 27" is too dense and elements will be too small.

Yes but I can scale, right?

Yes, scaling (using HiDPI/Retina) is a possibility. But fractional scaling is a bad idea. If you're able to use integer scaling (increments of 100%), you'll end up with properly constructed pixels, for example at 200% one scaled pixel is rendered with 4 HiDPI pixels. But at 125/150/175%, it'll use aliasing to render those pixels. That's something you want to avoid if you care for details.

And if you use 200% scaling, you end up with a 1080p real estate, which isn't ideal either: you're now sacrificing desktop space.

In gaming that's a non-issue, because games will scale themselves to give you the same field of view and UI size whatever the resolution. But you don't spend 100% of your time gaming, right?

5K actually makes more sense, but it's not available yet

Or barely. There's oddities like the LG 27MD5K, or Apple's own iMac Retina, but no real mainstream 5K 27" monitor right now. But why is it better than 4K outside of the obvious increase in pixel density? 200% "natural" scaling that would give 1440p real estate with great HiDPI sharpness. Ideal at 27". But not available yet, and probably very expensive at launch.

    GPU usage depending on resolution

With 4K your GPU needs to push more pixels per second. That's not as much of an issue if RTX cards delivers (and possible AMD response with Big Navi), but that's horsepower more suited to higher refresh rates for most people. Let's take a look at the increase of pixel density (and subsequent processing power costs):

    FHD:

    • 1080p@60Hz = 124 416 000 pixels/s
    • 1080p@144Hz = 298 598 400 pixels/s
    • 1080p@240Hz = 497 664 000 pixels/s

    QHD: (1.7x more pixels)

    • 1440p@60Hz = 221 184 000 pixels/s
    • 1440p@144Hz = 530 841 600 pixels/s
    • 1440p@240Hz = 884 736 000 pixels/s

    4K: (2.25x more pixels)

    • 4K@60Hz = 497 664 000 pixels/s
    • 4K@144Hz = 1 194 393 600 pixels/s
    • 4K@240Hz = 1 990 656 000 pixels/s

[EDIT] As several pointed at, this do not scale with GPU performance obviously, just a raw indicator. Look for accurate benchmarks of your favorite games at those resolutions.

(5K is 4 times more pixels to push than 1440p, so that's outside of the realm of possibilities for now unless you're fine with less than 60 fps on a $1500 GPU)

So we see running 4K games at 60Hz is almost as costly than 1440p at 144Hz, and that 4K at 144Hz is twice as costly. Considering some poorly optimized games still give the RTX 2080Ti a run for its money, 4K gaming doesn't seem realistic for everyone.

I know some people are fine with 60Hz and prefer a resolution increase, I myself chose to jump on the 1440p 60Hz bandwagon when 1080p 144Hz panels started to release, but for most gamers a refresh rate increase will be way more important.

In the end, that's your money, get a 4K monitor if you want. But /r/buildapc is a community aimed towards sound purchase decisions, and I don't consider that to be one. I wish manufacturers would spend their efforts on perfecting 1440p monitors (and reducing backlight bleeding issues, come on!) instead of pushing for 4K, but marketing sells right?

Thinking of building a PC instead of getting the Series X

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:48 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm just looking for some validation on this crazy idea.

So I have always been a console gamer and was 100% set on buying an Xbox Series X. I have a crappy Fujitsu laptop that barely runs Chrome, but this has never been a real problem as I use my phone for most of my computers needs.

Recently I have begun selling 3D printer models online, which has picked up nicely. I was running this side hustle from my i5 work laptop, which was powerful enough to do 3D modelling. Unfortunately though I have recently been made redundant due to COVID and had to send back my laptop, which has put a halt on putting together any new 3D models.

So my thinking now is I forgo the Series X and just get a PC as an alternative that I can also 3D model on. Seems like the best option at the moment?

I have never built a PC before but have done a bunch of research and the general consensus is I should wait for a the newer AMDs to be released and then buy the current series with a price reduction? Am I right in thinking something like a 2600 will be a decent alternative to a Series X?

Also I don't like the look of RGB, is it possible to set the majority of these coloured fans etc to a single colour?

PC on floor or desk in earthquake prone Japan?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 05:55 AM PDT

So I finally got a PC built after moving to Japan a year ago. Now I have a dilemma. Australia doesn't suffer earthquakes, and Japan has a lot of them. I'm wondering - should I keep my beauty sitting on the desk, or should I put it down on the ground?

Hardwood floors so not too concerned about dust. Just wondering what others do if they live in am area with quakes.

My biggest fear about building is the possibility that I'll get all of my parts, connect everything properly, and find that something on my system isn't working. This is why I've been considering just buying pre-built and upgrading as necessary. Advice?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 09:08 AM PDT

So yeah, basically what the title says. I don't want to spend all the money on parts within my budget, only to have to spend extra time troubleshooting and trying to figure out what all went wrong.

I know this sounds like complaining or giving up. But it's just something I'm concerned about.

How big of a difference is 4k vs 1440p at 27"

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 10:47 AM PDT

Assuming I get 144fps on both of them, is the difference massive or more like 144hzvs240, where it's nice to have but not always worth the extra $?

First build - Ugly and Proud

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 11:46 PM PDT

I also have pics of the tools I used, which I'll add as soon as imgur is done being glitchy. :P

    The story

Just graduated from college and decided to build my first PC as a summer project. Enjoyed the research, but was honestly a little disappointed by how easy the assembly would be; I wanted a more challenging hands-on experience. Couldn't exactly solder together a motherboard in my garage, but fabricating a case? How hard could that be? A bit difficult, it turns out. Rather than starting from scratch I went to my local Pier 1 on the last day before they boarded it up, and picked up this horribly ugly faux luggage. I suspect it was originally intended to be a receptacle for Karen's seashell collection, but it suited my unorthodox needs perfectly. It's made mostly of surprisingly thick and sturdy plywood. After many hours of attacking it with cutting tools and glue, I think it turned out quite well.

    Parts list here: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/KrOsLi/saved/CQ6Jf7

    Other parts/peripherals

The mouse is a spare from my dad, the monitor was found covered in dust in the back of my grandpa's closet (he does not remember where it came from), and the keyboard is an Apple relic that I found at the bottom of a cardboard box in my garage. It's from 2003, the keys have completely yellowed from sun exposure, and it was so nasty that I'm certain I'm the first person to ever clean it. Altogether the system works like a charm.

Overall I'm very happy with how it turned out. The thermals are actually better than they were before I put the parts in the case. We'll see how it holds up over time, since I'm little worried about the consistent heat being an issue. For now, I think it's glorious.

    Case preference for 3090

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 12:14 PM PDT

Building two PCs (his and hers) and deciding between the Thermaltake Level 20 XT and the Cool Master Cosmos c700m. I wanted big beefy cases to have enough room for the 3090 without it looking cramped and for thermals. Which do you prefer? Any other case recommendations? Space and budget is not a problem. Don't care for too much RGB. Will likely be using Noctua fans throughout vs water cooling.

    CPU light on MSI MOBO

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 09:37 AM PDT

Finally got my PC to turn on after having the smallest brain moment of my life (put power SW cable in wrong place), but now my CPU light is on (MSI B550-a pro and Ryzen 7 3700x). I have made sure it is secured, and when I turn it on the fans sound like a jet engine. Could this be causer by me removing the cooler after thermal paste was on (I was checking the CPU for broken pins after I couldn't get it to work)? If so I can easily get more thermal paste but is that the problem or could it be something else?

New pc build has a very weak wifi connection

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 09:08 AM PDT

I recently just built a pc and got through every obstacle, but the wifi connection is very poor. I have integrated wifi in my motherboard (Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro Wifi) and also tried using a USB wifi adapter, but that didn't help.

I have also been searching all over google for solutions like updating adapters, uninstalling them, turning off power saving, etc. None of these have helped. The only way I can get wifi is using USB tethering with my phone, but it's not the permanent solution I would like.

I would appreciate any assistance, this problem has been bugging me for a week.

Edit: Thank you to those who commented

Build Upgrade for 1440p 144hz+ Gaming

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 12:43 PM PDT

Good morning! I'm looking to refresh my build with the new RTX 3080 being released soon and I'm looking to upgrade some hardware in my rig since it has been struggling a little bit lately with some games at 1440p with a high refresh rate. My CPU I believe is bottlenecking my rig right now as I always see its usage at 99% when I'm noticing issues in games hitting fps targets I'm wanting to stay around. I'm thinking my main upgrades are a new cpu, gpu, & motherboard unless others have better suggestions to add. I was initially planning a complete rebuild and give this PC to my gf but she is content with hers still so I've got a good budget for this upgrade. Looking for more high-end but still reasonable upgrades to keep my rig on par with future games at 1440p high fps.

    What I'd Like:

    • I want to plan for a 32:9 5120x1440 high refresh monitor in the future, but currently on 16:9 1440.
    • Ability to stream and game without issues on one PC.

    My Current Build:

    • CPU: Intel Core i7 6700k
      - Looking at a 10th gen i9
    • CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 280mm
    • Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero
      - Will need help with picking out a motherboard for features/compatibility.
    • GPU: EVGA GTX 1080
      - Upgrading to Nvidia RTX 3080 (Likely Founders Edition, or ASUS TUF).
    • PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer MKIII Series 750w 80+ Gold Semi- Modular
      - Hoping this will be good enough/compatible with the RTX 3080.
    • RAM: 2x16gb 3200Mhz 16CAS (Can't Find Model ATM)
    • Storage: x1 2TB HP EX950 M.2 2280, 1 TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD, 3TB WD Black 7200RPM HDD
    • Case: NZXT H440 Matte Black

    My Peripherals

    • Gaming Monitor: x1 ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q 27in 1440p 144hz G-Sync
    • Multi-Task Monitors: x2 ASUS VP28UQG 28" 4K

Any thoughts or suggestions? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Portal / Aperture Science Build (Companion Cube V2)

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:47 AM PDT

    https://imgur.com/gallery/HQloL24

Just built this black and white rig and it turned out better than expected, mainly due to the red led indicators on the motherboard that adds a nice touch to the overall look. My room is Portal themed, black and white with a companion cube and a really huge Portal cake spray painted on my wall. Unfortunately the room is quite messy now to have a current pic but I do have some old pics to share. Previous rig was in a Graphite 780T that imo looks like a companion cube! I'm going to call my new rig Companion Cube V2.

Here's a pic of my desktop setup with my old rig.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/ecpJ0Bo

An even older picture if you'd like to see the companion cube on the wall.

    https://imgur.com/JuENGgu

A random video I made of that old setup with some Black Mirror vibes.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiZcT5OJYyA&feature=youtu.be

Anyway, specs for the new rig are

Ryzen 3600 (Temporary till Zen 3 comes out)

    MSI X570 Unify

    Zotac Mini 1070Ti (Temp)

    G.Skill Ripjaws 3600mhz CL16 2x16gb

    WD SN550 500gb + 1tb / SP US70 1tb / 3tb HGST

    Seasonic Focus GX 850

    Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360

    3x Arctic P12 PWM / 6x Arctic P12 PWM PST

    Tecware Flex PSU Cables

    Single 5050 RGB LED Strip

    Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic White

Upgrading from a 4790k and 1070ti if anyone is wondering. I think it's about time!

    Is 1080Ti good enough for 1440p and 144hz ?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 12:00 PM PDT

    As in title. I've got a ryzen 7 3700x and 16Gb 3600mhz ddr4 ram alongside that.

Im thinking about buying the Dell 27" S2719DGF monitor pretty hard, but I'd like to know what performance I can expect in games (AAA as well as less robust ones) with this hardware before I buy it, I currently have a really decent 1080p 144hz monitor, maybe I should stick to it ? Thanks in advance !

Trying to keep budget near $500, and think I did okay. Dedicated GPU will be a future purchase, which is why we went with the 3400G as she currently has a 1080p monitor. Storage is something I'm taking care of on the side, so it's not included in the price.

Can I add a RX 580 GPU onto my old motherboard?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 11:42 AM PDT

Hey all, i'm thinking of upgrading my PC by replacing the GPU with a MSI RX 580 ARMOR 8G. My PC setup now is pretty old, i'm using an Asrock m3a770de motherboard with an AMD Phenom II x6 CPU and wanted to know if the new GPU would work with this or do I need to change out the motherboard? Any info would be great, thanks!

    Mini ITX case for RTX30??

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:01 AM PDT

Do you have any ideas? Any ITX builders out there ?

I have been wondering about a mini ITX case for RTX30 update. I currently have a sharkoon QB One that I thought had me covered. Supporting dual slot up to 31cm long card... I have used a CV650w from Corsair.

Than I took 2 hits from RTX30. Almost none dual slot cards (no founders edition in my country) and 650w is not enough...

Luckily I stored my HX750i for later, but it is a 18cm long tank like PSU, not ITX friendly.

I saw Zotac releasing some mini RTX30 models, but they have very bad post sales support in my country...

I thought on upgrading to NZXT 210 case, it would solve the PSU situation, but still dual slot card. But at least I can thing of hybrid model since I'll have space for my 240mm CPU AIO + 120mm radiador from GPU... In other hand I believe hybrid card would have a scary price, wouldn't it?

**Do you have any recommendation of a case for?

up to Triple slot long GPU RTX30 HX750i PSU 240mm H100i AIO Mini ITX case**

First time builder. Want to know if this is a good entry level PC.

This is the part list. I want to know if this is powerful enough, and if it is a good idea to buy. Looking for the cheapest parts for the best value.
