Benchmarks for all the security patches and microcode updates on a Skylake 6700K Posted: 17 Nov 2019 09:31 AM PST About one and a half year has passed since spectre and meltdown went public and I tested the impact of those patches here.Adding to that, about half a year ago a new major vulnerability called MDS went live and I also tested that here. Now intel had to release a new microcode to apply new fixes for MDS because the previous one was not complete.Adding to this a new erratum has emerged (Jump Conditional Code Erratum) and this will be our main focus. For more info read this https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2019-microcode-nov If you want something tested ask below and I will try looking into it. The setup remains about the same.6700k@4.5GHz with 4.3GHz uncore and a 2.2GHz 1070 with +400 MHz on VRAM.3333 cl14/17/17 ram Windows version 1909(OS Build 18363.476) on Nvidia driver 441.20 PRE-Patch stands for 0 mitigations using 0xC6 microcode.Post-Patch has all mitigations enabled on 0xD4 microcode. The spreadsheet with all the data can be found here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vS83FpxBxaYx1hLlXJJNxiTEdhYpTx2RmsCu7RF7hCh5fXvMYbPyMfu6YASwbGmgSe9XQNULHoLucv-/pubhtml# 6,40% performance hit in games 2,30% in "workstation" tasks The additional fixes that have been applied on this microcode on top of the JCC erratum seems to have not done much harm. The only noticeable change I measured was on 7zip.(when comparing to my v2 test which was up to MDS).Due to time constraints I tested less apps. Do keep in mind that the 6700K is the initial skylake core and the most vulnerable.Newer and higher core count CPUs have hardware mitigations which means lower drop in performance. The gaming tests have been run entirely CPU bound and in demanding scenes. How Do You Handle PC Envy At Your Organization? Posted: 17 Nov 2019 08:34 AM PST I'm genuinely curious how others (include the size of your org for reference) handle PC Envy, i.e. a new laptop model comes out and 1 person gets it which then leads to many others wanting it just because it is the latest and greatest. In this world of consumerization of IT, many people seem to think they are experts in the space and feel they can "self-prescribe" their needs. I see this as both a positive and a negative. I work at an organization (50k+ users) where the stance seems to be shifting towards more of a customer delight model and at times users may request machines that don't match their business justification or perhaps they think they need a higher-powered machine but performance logs don't show a hardware bottleneck. However, management may want to spend more money to give users what they want to keep them happy. There are of course implications of this but in an attempt to not ask a leading question how do others handle this scenario? What sort of benefits and pitfalls does the stance your company has taken provide? [link] [comments] |
