Radeon RX 6000 & GeForce 30 Price Trend: Retail prices drop to +53% over MSRP in Germany & Austria

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 01:38 AM PDT

The prices of the RDNA2 and Ampere cards at retailers from Germany & Austria have moved again in the right direction compared to two weeks ago. In addition, all previous availability issues have now been resolved - this even applies to the Radeon RX 6800, Radeon RX 6800 XT as well as the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, which was not available at all for a long time. Many of the new graphics cards are now available with a wide range of models, often from several retailers.

At the same time, the recently observed rapid price drop has not slowed down at all, which means that AMD's RDNA2 graphics cards as well as nVidia's Ampere graphics cards are currently "only" +53% above the respective AMD/nVidia (german) MSRP on the average of the cheapest retailer price for every GPU model (check price trend diagram).

Of course, the current graphics card retailer prices in Germany & Austria are (mostly) still exaggerated - and above all, currently is the worst possible time for a graphics card purchase. Because the (now clearly provable) trend points to even clearly lower graphics card prices in the next few weeks, and if the pace continues at a similar rate, retailer prices at list price level could already be in sight in 3-4 weeks. It's possible that there will be a certain braking effect in the downward price movement before then - but at least the time until then should be taken.

Apparently, the delivery quantities are sufficient at the moment, perhaps the demand is also somewhat lower because of the summer times (as the Cryptominers as well no longer present at all), so that more cards are received by the retailers than are sold. Since the retailers have usually bought their cards at (clearly) higher prices from the distributors as well, the big game is now on for the retailers, who will get rid of their expensively purchased stock in time to make a profit in view of constantly decreasing sales prices.

There are hardly any big differences between AMD and nVidia - as mentioned, the current price exaggeration is the same on average. At most, it is noticeable that this price stampede downwards has been going on for nVidia since the end of May, but AMD did not move much until two weeks ago. Now, however, the AMD cards (clearly) follow the price path of the nVidia cards. This could be due to larger deliveries by AMD, but competitive effects are also conceivable - because if the nVidia cards become significantly cheaper, the retailers cannot leave similarly AMD cards at unrealistic prices.

Such a competitive effect is present within nVidia for the GeForce RTX 3070 & 3070 Ti, where the (relatively) low prices for the 3070Ti model drive the prices of the regular 3070 model ahead of it. In any case, the entire price structure of the RDNA2 and Ampere graphics cards portfolio is now slipping - which can now be combined with the hope of getting close to "normal" graphics card prices again in the foreseeable future.
