    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

My daughter is considering building a PC instead of buying pre-built.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 07:17 PM PST

I took my daughter to Best Buy to look at computers tonight. She is now suffering sticker shock. She brought up the idea all on her own, wondering if it would be cheaper "to just buy the parts and put them together". I informed her that it almost certainly would be cheaper. She was quite open to the idea. There is just one problem: neither of us have ever built a computer from scratch before. Where do I start? What tools would I need if we undertook this project? What skills will I need to make this work? Am I biting off more than I can chew with this project?

Upgrading from GTX 770. Can I just "pop in" a 1660 Super?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 08:32 AM PST

I guess I never realized power supply needs would go down w/ new technology (I think I have 400), so I'm just curious now if I can just "plug and play" with the a new card. MS 7756 motherboard, if that helps.

Why did my graphics card blow up?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 12:36 PM PST

Graphics card: GTX 770 Gigabyte Windforce

After a few months of not playing any games on my PC, I decide to load up a game. 10 minutes into the game (nothing demanding, Arkham knight on medium), my PC suddenly shuts off and won't turn back on, but my peripherals still have power.

So I leave it for an hour, unplug everything but the power cord, take out the graphics card, and it loads.

When I reinsert the graphics card, the pc turns on, but there a bang and big spark straight away from the 770. It looks like one of the chips (a resistor maybe?) blew and now looks burnt.

Any idea what could've caused it? Just an old card? I want to make sure it doesn't happen again on any new cards I install.

Could it be the 770 knew I was shopping for a new card, and in a state of rage and jealousy, decided to off itself?

    CPU: ryzen 1600 Motherboard: Asrock AB350m Pro4 Power supply: EVGA G2 650w.

Finally paid off the truck! Planning on building the following, and looking for last minute suggestions.

It's been ~5 years, I told myself that my first build would only come after I finished paying off my truck. Well, that day has finally arrived! I'm hoping to pull the trigger with the upcoming Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals.

Should be noted that I already have the 1080 TI.

Anything that I'm missing or should reconsider?

This RAM thing has me so confused...

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 10:27 AM PST

Preparing for my first build and just trying to wrap my mind around the best way to choose RAM. I'll find a RAM kit I like, then it won't be on the motherboard's QVL. I'll look at builds on pcpartpicker and some of the ram kits used aren't on their respective motherboard's QVL, either. So, that gets me thinking, are the RAM kits really running at their advertised speeds for the builds I see on pcpartpicker when the RAM isn't listed on the respective motherboard's QVL? I can see how the RAM might work at slower speeds, but I'm skeptical they work at advertised speeds using XMP settings. To add to the confusion, I recently saw a video on YouTube where the presenter was putting together a mock build for his viewers. In the video, the presenter recommended a 32GB kit of 3600MHz Trident Z RGB RAM to be used with the MSI B450 Tomahawk Max and a 3rd gen Ryzen CPU. There are no 3600MHz 32GB RAM kits of Trident Z RGB or any 3600 MHz (not even 3200 MHz) G.Skill RAM kits, for that matter, listed on G.Skill's RAM configurator that would be compatible with that motherboard and CPU, nor are there any compatible RAM kits with the same specs listed on the MSI QVL. To top that off, the guy on YouTube stated that RAM will run at 4133 MHz on MSI's B450 Tomahawk Max when the manual states that memory is only supported up to speeds of 3466 MHz on that board. My point is that I see this conflicting information regarding RAM all the time. Thoughts?

    Is my Build Any Good?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 01:28 PM PST

Firstly, I am very green when it comes to PC's, I'm very new and not sure what is good. Goal is around $900 for a build (gaming/streaming through elgato). I am not sure where I could lower the cost if possible/if its any good. Any recommendations or tips is highly appreciated!!

Comp Sci Student to be, what hardware should I go for?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 08:39 AM PST

Hey guys, this has probably been asked plenty before, but I'd really appreciate your input.

I'll be going to university in the UK (I'm Bulgarian) next year and am yet to figure out what I want to bring there computer wise. I have a 2018 MBP 13" (Quad-Core, 8GB of RAM, 512GB SSD) and a PC (8600K, 16GB of RAM, GTX 970, 2TB WD Black, 256GB SSD, custom watercooling loop in a Lian-Li PC O11 Dynamic). I'll most definitely be bringing the MBP, but I can't decide on what to do with the PC. Here's a pic of it for reference: https://imgur.com/a/CqZK0oo . Needless to say it's massive, the case itself weights 9KG, whole thing is probably closer to 20-25 with all the hardware, water-cooling gear and liquid in. Transporting it back and forth to the UK would be a nightmare and I'll be running the risk of the company smashing the tempered glass (I imagine we've all seen videos of how delivery companies handle packages).

So I started thinking - what can I do to still have decent hardware available (MBP isn't gonna cut it, I'll use it for note-taking during lectures but I enjoy gaming quite a bit so I'll still need a PC/gaming laptop). Black friday is coming up so I came up with 3 options:
    1. Bring only the MBP and have nothing to game on.
    2. Buy a NZXT H200i, some mITX board, a cheap Ryzen 2600X, an AIO and just transplant the RAM, PSU and storage whenever I'm leaving so I have a relatively inexpensive SFX PC which won't be as much of a hassle to transport.

    1. Buy a Razer Blade Stealth and a Razer Core and just bring my GPU and plug the Core into the laptop with USB-C whenever I want a GPU solid enough to game on. Will be much more expensive that the other options though.

I also want to upgrade my GPU, since I got my 970 in December of 2014 and it's getting old (looking at a RTX 2080). If I do that I won't be able to afford the Razer Blade Stealth + Razer Core option. The SFX Build (option #2) would look something like this: https://imgur.com/1EUwL7o. Here's what the Razer Blade Stealth and Core combo would look like: https://static.techspot.com/articles-info/1581/images/S-24.jpg. I've about $1400 saved.

TL;DR: Going to uni next year, desktop PC is massive and has a custom watercooling loop. Transporting it back and forth between Bulgaria and the UK would be a nightmare so I'm considering 3 things: 1. bring my 2018 13" MBP and be unable to game 2. Get a SFX case, cheap Ryzen, mITX mobo and transport parts between desktop PC and SFX one when leaving so it's easier to transport. 3. Buy a Razer Blade Stealth and a Razer Core and drop my GPU into the core so I have a nice e-GPU when I want to game.

My Ryzen 3600 temperature is too high (93C)

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 01:00 PM PST

Just built a new pc. I just ran a stress test (prime95?) and it got up to 93C before I shut it off. I'm using stock cooler and the thermal paste that was already applied. I'm not OC it unless it is doing that by default. I read the max temp is 95C so is it going to shut off if it reaches that or will it possibly be destroyed? I use CPU alot when rendering in blender or after effects and I'm not always going to be watching the temp. This seems alot higher than what other people are getting. What's a program that can keep this under control so I don't destroy my CPU? I didn't expect to have to get a cooler but I guess I need a noctua cooler? I'm not even sure it will fit around my RAM which is slightly tall Now I have a box fan with an AC filter on it facing the open side of the case --- Help me

Which ram speed is optimal for i5-8400 or does it matter at all?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 12:08 PM PST

I've already built my desktop and it has:

    • Intel i5-8400
    • 8GB stick of Crucial Ballistix Elite at 2400MHz
    • Gigabyte B360M D3H-CF mobo

And I turned on the only available XMP profile in BIOS.

I wasn't overly concerned with how much the RAM matched the CPU at the time, but now I want to get 32 gigs for more workspace freedom, because even with a fast enough NVME SSD, pagefile size is getting ridiculous.

    My questions here are:

    1. What would be the optimal RAM configuration for this CPU and motherboard? 1x32 or 2x16 or 4x8 GB? (if I take out and shelve the old stick)
    2. How important are timings?
    3. Can I have both the new RAM sticks and the old 1x8 GB without losing any performance?
    4. How much does RAM speed and XMP profiles matter for my case?

I heard that RAM timings matter a lot for AMD processors, but I'm mostly doing gaming and some light game development which usually takes more memory than CPU, and I'm not rendering any videos on this machine, so multithreading performance was not my focus, I was looking more at the best single-core performance at the price point of the entire system below 600 usd. Now I finally collected some spare cash to upgrade RAM and I want to get the most out of it.

Intel's Ark site lists DDR4-2666 as the only supported RAM speed, and it has nothing about timings. I've heard people using different speed sticks without any problems, but maybe at a negligible performance loss. I would also like to know how much it matters.

The most available speeds in my local shops are:

    • 2400 MHz - 25 different manufacturers/models
    • 2666 - 20
    • 2933 - 5
    • 3000 - 12
    • 3200 - 7
    • 3466 - 2

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 11:56 AM PST

Have a pretty moderate setup that gets me through games. I can play Battlefield at ~60FPS . CPU bottleneck ed but not 100% pegged all the time.

All of a sudden I go to game today and I'm getting <20FPS GPU not doing any work and CPU pegged 100% , and hovering around 50C no configuration changes, no hardware changes nothing. And it's happening on other games.

I'm at a loss.... I can't explain why sometimes my rig is running fine and other times not

    Specs Motherboard: B150.
    CPU: i5-6500k.

I need a new PC (UK here) and I have no idea about gaming PCs. Previously played on a iMac.

I want to play wow with good graphics as previously had everything on the lowest settings just so it would run. Never really looked into specs. Someone suggesting building my own but I found it far too overwhelming.

Can anyone suggest a good model that will run wow sufficiently. Or a website that sells pc bundles so I can get it all in one purchase.

    Need help with rgb

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 01:09 PM PST

Currently I'm looking to buy a new pc (around £500-600), but I've become very interested in rgb as well. I'm getting rgb fans for my case, which also has a rgb strip at the front, but I also want an led strip behind my desk. How could I sync all of them up? I will have the right amount of headers and I'm going to use MSI Mystic light to sync my fans up, but how would I connect up an external strip? Should I run it out of one of the PCI expansion slots on the case and connect it to the motherboard?

    Thanks in advance!

    Help With PC Build!

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 01:01 PM PST

This is gonna be my second custom PC build.

Since ive have some insight on building PCs, this is what ive came up with https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WWrvf9

This is a similar build to my old PC, which was barely built but unfortunately i sold :( (Old build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QVhpfH)

I need help on getting a cheaper storage setup. I know I can get a cheaper setup but im not too familiar with the storage side of building PCs. I want a ssd or nvme for a faster boot time and a hdd just for mass storage.

Also the is 550w enough for this PC? It says estimated 414w.

About to pull the trigger on my first build, any advice prior to ordering?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 07:50 AM PST

Heres what I've come up with. I was initially gonna wait until black Friday but according to multiple posts the deals aren't that different. I would like to use the extra time to put this build together and use it when I'm off. Let me know if you guys have any advice in terms of changes. I wasn't sure about the power supply so thats something I'd be interested to hear your opinion about. Also any thoughts on the case?

budget is 800USD to a max of 900USD, would like to keep lower if possible obviously.

Rtx2060 Super, Rtx2070 Super, or wait?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 05:10 AM PST

I am interested in buying a new graphics card. I have had a gtx1070 for a few years (since its release) and thought that perhaps it was time for an upgrade.

I am thinking either the rtx2060 super, or the rtx2070 super. Money is not a big deal, but I still want to get the best bang for my buck, ya know? I should add that I live in Australia, so current prices are quite inflated compared to other parts of the world. The 2060S is around $600-650 while the 2070S is about $800-850.

I do not currently know much about these cards, and I am open to opinions/advice. Would you consider an upgrade worth it, for the price? If so, which card would be better? Or should I stick with my gtx1070. Thank you, and any help is appreciated.

Oh, and in case it is relevant, my current cpu is the Ryzen2700x.

Any point in replacing a Cooler Master HAF X?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 10:18 AM PST

The build I'm putting together is first and foremost for work, and gaming as a close second.

I've been looking at modern cases, but I don't really see why I should replace my Cooler Master HAF X at this point, as the thermal performance still rates very well - and if I want to get anywhere near what I currently get I'll be spending 200 Euro.

Is there any must have reason to go with a new modern case? I don't really care much about how it looks, though I have to admit the design on the HAF has not aged well.

I'm currently extremely tempted to rip out all the old components, clean the case up, and mount all my new components into it.

Since I do a lot of CPU and Memory bound work that benefits from parallel workloads (I maintain a mission critical Ruby on Rails application with a massive MySQL schema), I have settled on the following build... This will replace my very long in the tooth AMD FX 8350 / R9 280x / 8 GB RAM build.

Can I Paint The Graphics Card Accents with a Paint Brush?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 12:03 PM PST

So I tried googling this and I could not find anything. I am planning on getting RX 5700 XT CHALLENGER. It looks like this. I really don't like that they picked yellow for the design. I was planning to do a red and black build. I am not experienced at taking apart graphics cards so I rather stay away from that. Am I able to tape up the graphics card and use a paint brush to paint just the yellow part on the shroud? Or is using a paint brush on a graphics card shroud a no no?

A bought a used case for a good enough deal, but, I found that it didn't have any screws. What number/size of them should I get
