I changed the thermal paste on my 8 year old laptop and the temps dropped 20+ degrees

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 07:22 AM PDT

They went from 96 in games to 70-75. And everything runs considerably better (as much as it can of course). Who knew, right? Of course first I had to scrub off the old one (very carefully of course, with a pair of tweezers :^) ), dried out to shit. I didn't think it would be THAT impactful, shit. Change your very old thermal paste, kids

"New" SSD already been used for Chia mining

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 11:37 AM PDT

I was stupid enough to buy an SSD from that large south American rain forest

    >Boot up

    >Open diskman and see the drive is already formatted 🤔
    >Open drive and see 850GB of Chia mining files
    >Run SMART utility: 11% of drive life already used with 166 hours uptime

The scary thing is I wouldn't have checked the SMART data if the scammers would've deleted the partition. Obviously I've returned it now. I've slipped a paper note under the drive to warn the next person.

This is a first for me, has anyone else experienced this?

    Ryzen 5 5600x, 240mm AIO & high temps = simple solution

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 12:56 PM PDT

Around December, I was able to build my first pc in 10+ years. Stock Amd cooler brought high temps 50° while idle, 90° with heavy loads (gaming, encoding, editing). Bought a 240mm AIO few weeks later and noticed a bit more satisfying results… until last week. Noticed with heavy loads it would reach 96°, idle 55°. Searching for similar results online, many have claimed these temps are high yet safe. I could decrease the voltage to 1.2 and disable PBO limits. While this did slightly help, I decided to open up my case and check how tight the cooler was screwed in. Well look at that… 33° idle, and have not topped 65° with heavy loads. Only took me 6 months to figure that out.

Tl;dr: make sure you tighten your CPU cooler

One PC, 6 monitors, 3 at a time?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 03:58 AM PDT

Is the a way to have 6 monitors all connected to my PC - only 3 need to be displayed at any one time. I use my PC for gaming, work and sim racing - for the latter, I have a separate rig that I slide under my desk and use the 3 screens I normally use, but it would be nice to have a separate 3 screens attached to my rig. Obviously I dont need to use all 6 screens at a time which simplifies it. I've been looking for a KVM switch but none seem to do 3 inputs, 6 outputs. And if one exists I'd be worried about quality/framerates.

    Any ideas?

    Here is what I see.

Enter, F1 and F8 don't work. They just flash or the computer reboots to the same screen.

    I can enter the BIOS.

    Any suggestions?

    Monitor compatibility with GPU

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:57 PM PDT

I'm sorry if this question is dumb. I'm new to this and am having trouble finding the answers via Google. I've been a console gamer and am switching over to PC, however, I've got some confusion about monitors. I originally purchased a Freesync monitor (Acer kg281k) for my Xbox, and was wondering about its compatibility with a 3060 GPU. I've heard conflicting info on what the monitor would mean in terms of refresh rate on my new build. Could you guys help me to understand how those two interact? Thanks a ton in advance!

    RGB fan help

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:59 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I have been battling colon cancer for the past 10 months and recently had surgery.

I built a gaming PC with my son so he could have something to remember me by if my surgery did not go well. As it used to be one of my favorite hobbies. We were struggling to find a graphics card but were able to find a 1050 ti for a reasonable price.

As you can tell by this post the surgery went well. Now my son wants more color to "his" PC haha. Just need some help finding some reasonably priced RGB fans.

I was looking at these EZ DIY fans on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FLBZ7KD/?coliid=I3RDLN2DVT9LG7&colid=XDG6BWJ6BFZO&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it Since they are pretty affordable. But I have been seeing mixed reviews on them. Any one have experience with them or can suggest other fans?

I also wanted peoples opinion if we should go with black fans or white fans.

    https://imgur.com/gMBK4ON

    Here is the PC.

    Thank you all for your help. We love the PC community;

New Build, First Time Building A Computer - Advice Needed

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 11:13 AM PDT

First time I'm going to be building a PC and I definitely am out of my depth. From watching LTT I get AMD is what I want for a workstation vs a gaming PC (likely won't play games, mostly video editing, photo editing and lots of chrome tabs).

I just want to go a bit overkill so I don't need to upgrade frequently. I am switching from a iMac 5k 2015 which I did have to max out on RAM, but then it decided to die on me from either a power surge or the fusion drive dying - either way it's time for something less pain in the arse.

Any advice would be great, especially if it means a simpler build!

As a note, I will be pulling a super old graphics card out of a computer I have from a while ago (1080ti I think), or I'll find something locally if I can get a decent price on something newer but not top notch.

Recommend air cooler for the Intel Core-i7-9700K ?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 03:55 AM PDT

I noticed that my cpu is going beyond 90C° when playing games, i was using the stock cooler, I'm a little tight on money right now and can't afford an AIO or an expensive air cooler, I don't care about the sound coz I'm using headphones, so are there any cheap air coolers around 30$-50$ that i could use for now ?

Wanting to refresh Old gaming PC

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:23 PM PDT

The first pc I built for gaming in 2014 has become slow, underpowered, and has been sitting in my room largely unused since I built my new machine last year.

CPU: i5 4690K (Intel fan on top)

Motherboard: Gigabyte UD Z97 MX GAMING 5

GPU: EVGA GTX 660 (I think it had some fancy name, but I don't remember exactly)

    RAM: 8GB Corsair 1600MHz

550 WATT semi modular power supply.

    And 1TB Seagate HDD

(I have all of the boxes somewhere at my dad's house)

Cost was about $800 USD in 2014

It was a good little machine for several years before I got the urge for an upgrade.

I'm wondering what the best logical upgrade would be for the graphics card and if the RAM would be worth replacing. As well as anyone's thoughts on the best option for curing long boot times and general sluggishness.

I considered replacing the HDD and going clean windows install, but I don't really want to lose all of the things saves on the old machine.

Edit to add: the reason I want to refresh the PC is so my kids can play on it, or my wife, or guests. I don't expect it to be a high end gaming rig, it never was, but there is still a lot it can handle, and I want it to keep being useful.

I know how hard parts are to source right now, I finished my last build right before things got really bad.

Help me understand PCIe lane sharing

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 09:31 AM PDT

    Hi,
I just got a MAXIMUS XIII HERO, and the manual says the top PCIe slot runs in Gen4 16x, unless you put a PCIe SSD in any of the first two M.2 slots, then the lanes are split with 8x to the GPU and 2 * 4x for the M.2 slots. Am I understand it correctly that this split is "permanent"? If my SSD is idle, the GPU still only gets 8x, correct?

I know even a 3090 won't be bottelnecked on Gen4 8x but I just want to understand how this works.

    Is My Mobo Fried?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 10:11 AM PDT

I'll try and keep this brief.

Mobo is an Asus Prime X570 Pro

    CPU is AMD 3900x

Uninstall stock cooler, CPU comes up with it stuck

    No bent pins

Put the CPU back in socket and install Kraken X52

    Power on, DRAM light

Take both sticks out and check for dirt, they are clean

Install only only one, it posts but I get a cpu temp error and system shuts down.

Uninstall Kraken thinking the pump is borked, install Corsair H100i

    DRAM light again

Check both for dirt, they are clean

    Install only one, no change

Install a different set of ram from a working comp, no change

    Clear CMOS, no change

Uninstall AIO, install stock cooler, no change

    Still just a DRAM light.

Check my CPU again, no noticeable damage to the pins.

Any thoughts here. I'm about to head to Microcenter and pickup a new mobo. It's going to be a bit of a drive, so if there's something else I should look to grab for troubleshooting purposes. Let me know!

    Thanks for any help!

Is it worth spending more on the 4650G instead of the 3200G?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:33 PM PDT

For where I live, the difference is a little big, with the 4650G costing around R$1900.00 and the 3200G around R$1000.00 - R$1200.00

I don't want to get a video card for now, but I do, and besides playing games, I'll use it for work (programming) and everyday use, which has a better longevity?

Any recommendations for gaming chairs to sit cross-legged on?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 12:10 PM PDT

For the last few years I've been using a standard extra-wide office chair to game, but it's deteriorating and I'm looking to purchase a decent gaming chair that will allow me to sit cross-legged while also supporting my neck. I know it may seem a bit unusual but it's the only position that I feel truly comfortable in.

I've been doing some research and the 'big and tall' chairs seem to most closely fit the bill despite myself being an average-sized dude. I'm particularly interested in chairs with a relatively broad and flat seat, unobtrusive armrests, and good head support since I'm usually leaning back while I game.

I'm not really interested in high-end features like built-in speakers so I'm only planning on spending $200-$400.

I hope this is the right subreddit for this, but I couldn't find a more relevant one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I've been researching this for hours but haven't found anything specific enough to feel confident about. Since I spend so much time on my chair I could really use some personal opinions from fellow pc gamers.

    Warzone RTX 3070 low fps

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 11:47 AM PDT

I upgraded from a 2070 super to a 3070. my fps didn't change much, maybe 10 more. I'd say I'm averging about 110 now, most of my settings are medium to low. dlss on quality doesn't seem to make much difference. in gpu-z, my usage is about 70-80%. I'm wondering if I don't have enough ram?

    2560x1440

    MSI MAG B460 Torpedo

    Intel i7-10700

    evga RTX 3070

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16gb PC3200, my ram is capped at 2933 mhz. I don't think this is the issue though.

How to know what software I need to update?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:51 PM PDT

I recently bought a new PC after having used macs primarily for the last 10-15ish years. One thing that I don't remember dealing with much in the past (or maybe I just didn't think about it back then) is that there is so much extra bloatware that comes with all of the default install/update downloaders. Is there a good way to figure out what kind of updates are critical vs what I can pass on?

For reference, I bought an Alienware Aurora R10 that came with an AMD CPU/Nvidia card and runs windows 10. My mouse and keyboard are Razer (which has its own pile of recommended downloads). It came preinstalled with a ton of automatic update software from Dell, alienware, nvidia, windows, etc. I've primarily been letting windows do it's "critical updates" and installing relevant drivers, but I was wondering if there is a better/safer way to do it. Thanks!

P.S. I don't know if buying a prebuilt PC is taboo in this sub (I had joined when I was looking to build my own), but with the price of components these days it actually ended up being cheaper to buy the whole rig from dell when it was on sale earlier this year.
