    UPS Recommendations

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 01:32 PM PDT

    Hi,

Just had a power cut, the 3rd in a few days. Thought it was a good time to buy a UPS for the newcomputer and monitors.

PC has has a 5600x and 3080 and I choose a 750w power supply. Monitors are 2 LGs 38gl950 and a smaller secondary model. Don't want the UPS for playing games on if there is a power cut, more to just be an extra measure to protect it if it happens so that I can shut it down safely.

I was thinking of getting this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/CyberPower-CP1500EPFCLCD-UK-Outlets-Charging-compatible/dp/B00BUJBD6K

Reviews in general are positive. Anyone have any first hand use with it.

I am stuck between getting a Lian Li o11 mini (for looks and temps), nr200 (for portablity), or the Metallicgear neo mini v2 (for a combination of both)

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 10:10 AM PDT

I will be going off to college next year so I need something that I can bring.

I am worried that getting an ITX build will affect temps and performance.

    Here are my specs

    AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

    Nzxt kraken x53 240mm AIO

MSI B550-A PRO (or Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX for ITX)

    RTX 3070 or 3080

    Crucial Balistic 3600mhz c16

Crucial MX500 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive

    Silverstone SX700-G — 700 Watt 80 PLUS

Let me know what you guys think,

SSD not an option for installing windows 10

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 06:47 AM PDT

I just finished building my first pc, everything seems to have gone together smoothly until I tried installing windows 10. I want to install it onto my SSD but it doesn't even appear to be an option. Anyone know how to resolve this? I've checked the connections and they look good.

How do you guys deal with the constant urge of upgrading your PC??

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 03:44 PM PDT

I finally got my build exactly where I wanted it to be. I got lucky with getting both the 5800X and 6700 XT at MSRP. But then I recently just heard about the new AMD 3D V-Cache CPUs being released in a few months that is rumoured to be compatible with my motherboard. I bought the 5800X because I thought it was going to be the last CPU generation that will be compatible with that motherboard.

I also just realized that my motherboard is only capable of Wifi 5 and not Wifi 6 which is considerably faster, so now the idea of changing motherboards is also quietly lingering in the back of my head... Now I'm getting the urge to upgrade again despite clearly not needing to anymore!

    27 inch 1080p vs 1440p monitors. I couldn’t see a difference in store.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 02:57 PM PDT

I stood and stared at the video playing on 27 inch 1440 and 1080 monitors in Best Buy for like 15 minutes yesterday. I could barely tell a difference.

I realize that they certainly did not have a 1440 signal running to that monitor. It was likely a 720 or 1080 signal from an hdmi splitter running to however many monitors. I know that a display in a store is not even close to ideal.

The thing is though I really didn't see the pixels on the 1080 like I have read that I would. Even up close I didn't see pixels. I stood at about the same distance I sit from my monitors now, about 24-48 inches away. I didn't notice any of the other things everyone goes on about in this sub other than the 1440 might have been just a tad sharper on some imagery.

My question is am I blind, was it the setup, is it really just not that much of a noticeable difference? Is the store display just a really poor example of what the monitors look like? In looking to replace my hp24ce all researching monitors has done is confuse me.

Im not trying to start an argument. I'm just at even more of a loss now as what to do. The cost of 27 inches of 1440 is quite a bit more(for me). I won't be upgrading any computer components for at least a couple years. I really just want a better looking panel and something that will show the frames I can get out of my games. As far as shooters I only really play CSGO and Fortnite. I can easily get more than 60 in those games.

Installing an SSD to a system that has never had one, any potential headaches/issues?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 01:58 PM PDT

Sorry in advance if the question is a bit dumb but I'm still very new to building/modifying PCs.

Things I feel that I should mention:

    • The system in question is an Alienware 15 R3, it has a slot for an NVME SSD
      • I am able to afford an NVME SSD
    • I use a 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD for the entire system
    • It takes 3 minutes to reach the Windows Login Screen, and an addition 9 minutes for the disk usage to be below 100%
      • Though TBH this does not really bother me, as computer seems to run fine until I shut down & boot again
    • I'm just trying to keep this computer from causing issues/breaking down until I'm able to get my hands on a 30 series GPU to build a new PC
      • As such, I'm a bit hesitant on modifying my laptop simply because I haven't touched it much besides replacing my HDD

So regarding all of this, would the installation and setup of my OS + my most used applications to an SSD cause any sort of potential problems? I'm just trying to keep my laptop in working/gaming condition, which it does well besides the long boot up. I only want to install an SSD if the process is simple and more-or-less risk free.

Other questions I want to ask:

    • If installing and setting up and SSD is easy, would it be better to clone my HDD onto it or just do a fresh windows install?
      • If cloning is the way to go, are programs like Macrium Reflect able to clone an HDD onto an SSD without problem
      • If fresh install is the way to go, how would I install 3rd party drivers such as Alienware's and Nvidia's? Most of my laptop's storage is taken up by games, but I'm not sure if these third party drivers are essential for my system to run or not
    • If I end up getting an SSD, would it be better to get a 256 GB one or a 1 TB one? I really only plan on having my OS on the SSD for my laptop, but would like to repurpose the SSD for a pc build sometime in the future.

Again, I apologize of the question is a bit dumb and for the wall of text, but I'm not sure how else to get answers for my question. Thanks in advance for any and all help/advice that can be given.

    PC Airflow/Cooling Science

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 10:32 AM PDT

I'm not in the market to buy a new case, but I am trying to better understand how to cool my system and make some upgrades. I have the Corsair 4000D Airflow with the Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 and 3 basic fans. The top of the case has a mesh screen for dust that you can remove and let's the hot air out from the top.

Is there any resource or website that can actually show you the correct airflow of how to properly cool your system? I've used a variety of plug-in fans, aimed at all different parts of my case, to try and cool it more but nothing seems to definitively help.

I'm not exactly asking for help with my specific case, but just a general cooling guide/resource that's legit so I know how to lower my temps.

"Buy a better fan." is obvious, but knowing how pc case airflow is what I'm looking for… Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime.

How to migrate Windows to a new PC?

What should I do? Outdated laptop vs cannibalized computer

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 02:21 PM PDT

Hi folks, I have an ASUS ROG g751 that is in mint condition I acquired from a friend. It has an i7 4710hq cpu, a 3gb gtx 970m, and 16gb of ram. I feel like it is lacking a lot with the e sports titles I play, overwatch apex, dota 2, and maybe a few different games depending on the day. Over covid I picked up a hobby of taking old computers and frankensteining them together and have acquired a few parts, the best I have currently, is a i5 4570, gtx 770 2gb with an asrock h81m mobo, and 16gb of ram. With wanting the best frames and visuals with what I have, should I use the laptop or the desktop? I've also considered buying a 4770k to put in the computer, but they go for about $100 and I'm not so sure it's worth the upgrade, any input is much appreciated. If i use the desktop I am planning on buying a gpu, probably a 1660 super. When I can find one that isn't 3x msrp!!!

    Tl;Dr, I have a laptop with an i7 4710 and gtx 970m or a desktop with i5 4570 and gtx 770. Which should I use? And is it worth getting a 4770k?

What should I do with this? 3080 Card Issue

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 03:53 PM PDT

I was able to purchase this is the Newegg Shuffle: "AORUS GeForce RTX™ 3080 XTREME WATERFORCE WB 10G Gallery | Graphics Card - GIGABYTE Global" https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N3080AORUSX-WB-10GD#kf

The problem is, I already have an AIO cooler for my CPU installed in my case. Is there any water cooling solution that doesn't require a radiator and fans? First world problems, right? I can post pictures of my current setup if that helps with suggestions. Thanks!

Need to build a budget PC for D2: Resurrected

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 01:59 PM PDT

Haven't had a gaming PC in about 5 years due to work and newly married, but I need to play D2 Resurrected on a PC. I parted out my old PC but I was just gifted an old PC that's good enough to play the current version of D2.

    https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03141285

Is there a way I can upgrade this PC with eBay parts to be capable to run D2R on the cheap? I have a spare EVGA gt740 SC video card laying around to use as well.

    Any info is appreciated!

4x Radeon VII liquid immersion cooling

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 09:40 AM PDT

    Hey,

    The beauty if finally there!

    During setup: https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/564247144

    Up and running: https://vimeo.com/564242177

    Picture of the setup: https://cdn1.bbcode0.com/uploads/2021/6/17/1653b68d060cfe795fd01fcb685b4329-full.jpg

It is really promising and looks effective. Liquid cooling radiators left because the fittings still didn't arrived.

We inserted one screw between the radeons to make sure they get enough liquid if necessary.

    Calm, Nice, Effective!

I hope it helps others when they want to build that it is possible. (But it really took like 1 week to organise every part to get the best prices. I used silicon oil, which is pricy (~15$/litre) but non toxic, stable, 200+ boiling point, transparent, odorless, low viscosity. I guess this is the thing that is too pricy and there could be some lower options in the future.

    5600x struggling to play Minecraft

Hello, I built an itx PC a couple months ago with a 2060 and a 5600x. I recently downloaded Minecraft bedrock, and was surprised to see that my CPU was reaching 92 percent single core load, along with insanely high temperatures(92). I highly doubt that im supposed to be getting bad performance like this(or maybe I am?) either way, please help

Hard drives shouldn't EVER be put as main operaring system drives in any computer or laptop! I still see a lot of laptops with only a slow 5400RPM HDD inside and even dekstops with HDDs for OS that are still kinda slow

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 12:13 PM PDT

Recently I had to fix my uncle's laptop. But first let me tell you a quick story: I have a modest PC with an i3, GTX 1060 and a 480GB SATA SSD; and my uncle has a laptop with an HDD instead of SSD, that's all the info needed now. (P.S: my SSD is just a relatively cheap Apacer Panther, so nothing fancy, but still wayyy higher speeds than any HDD!)

When I opened my uncle's laptop.. I. Was. DISGUSTED by the slow SLOW speed of both boot-up and just general moving and navigating through Windows.

And guess what? Turns out the hard drive wasn't even fragmented much (it was 4% fragmentation level on the Windows drive optimiser/defragmentor app), my uncle didn't even have the drive half full (he only used 31% of 1TB), there weren't almost any useless programs at startup when I checked the task manager, and everything seemed normal on the surface. But it turns out the reason for slowness was just Hard Drive, literally, no bad settings or filled storage or anything! And I've had a similar experience with another PC I think a few years ago, and same experience when I was poor a while back and I had an AMD A4 laptop with a super slow HDD.

However, hard drives are great for secondary storage! I forgot to mention that I also have a 2TB secondary HDD in my PC; 480GB SSD boot drive + 2TB secondary HDD = makes the perfect combination for me!

It's a shame HDDs are so often included in large capacities as the only drives in the systems (a part of laptops and prebuilt PCs on sites like Amazon) instead of just putting a smaller SSD (240GB sweet spot for small capacity SSDs) and having some actual good and useable speeds and let the user upgrade down the line if they need a ton of space (example: a PC that comes with 240GB SSD, and then I buy not too long after a relatively cheap 1TB HDD for mass storage)

Conclusion: HDDs frickin' SUCK as boot drives, SSDs are the best boot drives. HDDs only for mass storage, most servers and archive data

Desk microphone for talking to friends on discord?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 12:37 PM PDT

    Hi,

I've been using audiophile headphones for my gaming setup and a separate USB mic (Samson C01u Pro) for about two years.

The Samson mic picks up a lot of background noise and sometimes Discord does not pick up some of my words when I talk in the Samson, even after changing settings on discord, my headset mic picks up everything I say but the Samson while more sensitive, it only glitches on Discord lol.

Any advice on a desk microphone for discord and light streaming?

How does this build look? My friend helped me select the parts.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 10:59 AM PDT

Now that I have a job, I've started to save for my PC, a dream I've had short of two years now. I have a friend who built her first system a few months ago, before the GPU shortages got really bad. Anyway, here's the list we made. She has a 9700K and a 2070 Super. She uses her system for the same purposes I will, gaming and streaming. The reason we went Intel was not only because it was in stock, but because she has had issues with Ryzen. Her old laptop would be unstable and inexplicably crash. After switching to Intel, the programs she was using that caused the Ryzen system in crash wouldn't crash the Intel one. Also, we have a GT710 in here. It was cheap and I needed a way to plug it into my monitor and see if it worked. We both are holding out to get 3080's. How does it look?
