Can't get RAM to run at 3600 Mhz Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:01 AM PDT It keeps running at 2666mhz I don't know what to do. I tried turning on XMP it didn't work [link] [comments] |
How long it will last without thermal paste? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 07:05 AM PDT I was cleaning dusty old office then soon realized thermal paste was dead dry. In my local zone it is quarantined no way to pickup new paste. It is I3-2120 @3.3 Ghz. Stock OEM cooler. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a solid under desk mount Posted: 23 Apr 2021 08:10 AM PDT I'm hoping people here are just as knowledgeable about accessories as they are about parts. I have this case for my PC. I recently bought an Uplift desk with the underdesk mount they sell on their site. However, I'm pretty dissatisfied with it. The width of the tower is at the upper limit of what the mount supports and consequently the bracket that goes over the tower is bowed outward. So, I'd like something more solid. The tower is w: 8.25" h: 17". The slide and swivel features are a must have, it's great to have easy access to the back of the tower. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
If my o.s is on a sata ssd but my games and pagefile on a pcie m.2, will it be much slower? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:25 AM PDT I had the install from hell putting in an m.2 drive - had to remove the video card, screws went missing, thought it was going to be a 10 minute job but it turned into 2 or 3 hours. There's no way I'm putting my o.s on that thing. If the pagefile is on there as well as the games, will they load noticeably slower than having everything on m.2? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:25 AM PDT A coworker has offered to trade me his RTX 3070 for my 2080 ti, he's also throwing in a 9900k and a Z390 motherboard. Should I accept? [link] [comments] |
Is not locking my cables with zip ties going to damage my pc? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:09 AM PDT Q cause of an discussion I had bit not nessesarily build help My uncle is helping me put together my first fully custom PC [he's also supplying me some parts] and I pre installed some fans into my case and hooked them up to the argb junction [not my first rodeo with building PC's, just never a full build from scratch before] So our issue is, I use zip ties to cable manage in my case, but I use them "backwards" [so that the teeth don't bite and I can reuse zip ties, save the planet use less plastic!] and tuck the tails into the bundle with the wires to 'lock' them and keep the tails from poking into other components [tho i don't think a zip tie tail could do much harm] My uncle says that doing that could damage my pc? His reasoning is that the zip ties could loosen and that could let my cables 'work free' and I'd have to redo all my cables and turning it on with lose cables could fry my components. Thing is, this desktop isn't going to be a carry and go desktop, and it's not a laptop which does need to have wires locked into place, it's going on a platform under my desk and only moving to and from college dorms with me Does anyone know if there really in a threat to my pc if I don't lock my zip ties tight [and by exstention snip the tails], or does anyone have any non adhesive reusable\lowplastic recommendations for cable management [I'm alergic to adhesive which is why I'm not useing paper tape, which a friend recommended] I also tried useing velcro in an old PC but it ended up partially melting and making an absolute mess in my case and I had to replace wires [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2021 12:22 PM PDT Sorry if this isn't completely on topic or against the rules, but this sub has been helpful for me in the past. So I'm trying to use the USB C port on my Asus X570 TUF Pro Gaming motherboard to connect to my new oculus quest 2 over their link cable. The connection is loose and has to be held in a particular position to work. I used a zip tie for strain relief and while this helps, it's sensitive to any movement and frequent disconnects still happen. You can see some pictures at the link below. http://imgur.com/gallery/UmbCbU1 The problem also happens with other (shorter) cables as well as when I connect my phone over any cable. This problem doesn't happen when using any of the USB 3 ports with a USB to USB c cable, so the problem seems isolated to that port. It seems like a mechanical hardware issue more than anything else, anyone have any recommendations for improving this connection? I know there are potential workarounds using a USB 3 adapter, a separate cable, or even switching to virtual desktop / the new air link, but it's frustrating having to do that when my setup should work this way. How do actually move storage devices(nvme ssd's)?? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:43 PM PDT So I'm gonna build a new pc and I'm planning on getting two nvme drives. One of them is gonna be for my OS, cloud based games,(steam, online games, etc), and programs(drivers, OC software, hardware info software, OBS, discord, etc). And the other drive is for things like videos, pictures, document, files, completely local based games and etc. And I was just wondering when it is time for me to get a new pc or upgrade how do I Actually transfer my second drive to my new pc. The first drive I'll just wipe completely since you have to pretty much and I'll reuse it for the exact same purpose as it was originally being used for(OS,steam, discord, drivers, etc). But for the second drive do you just simply plug into the new system and everything is gonna be the way it was or do you have to format it. And if you format it don't you lose everything. Sorry I'm not familiar with having multiple storage devices. Thanks in advanced for reading all of this have a great day!:) [link] [comments] |
240mm AIO or something Noctua? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:15 AM PDT I've got a Ryzen 1800x (with plans to upgrade to something from Zen 3 down the line) and I'm wanting to know which cooler would be better. I have a Hyper 212 RGB right now, and I'm looking between some sort of 240mm radiator or an NH-U12S. I do value having RGB in my build, so I was wondering if the performance gain in getting a high end air cooler was gonna be worth having to sacrifice aesthetics. Is it just a difference of 1-2 degrees or is the gap between them a bit more substantial? [link] [comments] |
M.2 not showing nor can I boot Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:32 PM PDT This has happened before but I dont remember what I did to fix it.... months ago I got a new cpu fan. took out the old in with the new but my pc wouldn't start at all. figured out I had a bent pin fixed it and then it took me to the bios. problem was I COULDNT GET PASSED THE BIOS.same problem now but instead I switched the cpu for a new one (ryzen 7 5800). im just stuck here in the bios. I have a b450 tomahawk max and a WD 500 GB ssd on the m.2 slot and I have a 3tb HDD on data port.i have windows installed in the m.2 and im trying to boot it to there but it won't work. ive tried unplugging completely the ssd from the data still nothing. m.2 just doesn't show and I have windows installed and everything but idk what's going on. I really dont want to loose my stuff nor have to wipe anything, I just dont understand why after installing the new cpu why my computer wouldn't just boot to the windows loggin screen :( pls help [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2021 10:13 AM PDT I've just recently built my brother a PC, and apon booting, it is now trying to repair my disc. The first time it booted and said this, it was just stuck on "repairing disc". Then on like the 3rd or 4th boot up it is on "repairing disc this may take more than an hour". It got past that, but as of right now it is just on a loading screen with a black background. [link] [comments] |
Where to find replacement Founders Edition heat-sinks? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:51 PM PDT I managed to get a pre-built machine with a RTX3070 in it for relatively cheap, but the gpu is some bizarre ultra-low-cost cooler that feels very light and is made of pretty poor quality plastic. It gets up to the low 90's when playing games, even after I swapped out the thermal paste. When I took it apart I was able to confirm that the board at least was a founders board and it was a legitimate GA104 die, so I was thinking I might be able to get an aftermarket cooler for it, but haven't had luck finding any air coolers, and custom watercooling is out of my budget. Does anyone know of a place I might be able to buy a replacement Founders Edition compatible heatsink/cooler assembly from? Maybe places where people doing custom watercooling would re-sell their old heatsinks? [link] [comments] |
Got 3070 in the mail today and now my PC won’t boot Posted: 23 Apr 2021 12:51 PM PDT So I got my 3070 today through EVGA's step-up program and first, like an idiot I put it in my lower pcie slot and trying to get it out was fairly difficult and I ended up popping the little tab that locks the card in place. I then installed it in the main pcie slot and when I try to turn on my PC nothing happens. I don't know what the problem is. When I plug in one of my monitors via display port there is a little feedback sound from the speakers of the monitor which leads me to believe that the card is working. I've saved up a lot of money for this whole computer as I am not that fortunate and I'm currently devastated so I apologize if this post seems very scattered I just don't know what to do Is it possible that I've bricked the motherboard? Just to see if it was still good when I took my 1660ti out before I sent it to EVGA for the 3070, I turned on fine without any GPU in it. [link] [comments] |
WE DID IT!!!! Dream Build - On the Cheap - with TL;DR Posted: 22 Apr 2021 03:15 PM PDT Story Time. (3 min) I am 15. As a kid, I never owned a computer. The closest thing I had was an original Ipad, which by then, was already 2 years old. I got my first phone in 9th grade, the IPhone 6s. This was during the peak of the Fortnite craze, and the Iphone 6s was just powerful enough to give me minimum settings at 30fps. I thought this was the best thing in the world. The next big tech upgrade was on my 15th birthday last year, when I got my Iphone SE(2020), which is absolutely bonkers. I don't care what anyone else says, the Iphone SE is hands down the best price to performance that you can get for a smartphone. Anyways, around November 2020, I saw Tech Yes City's video series, 'Turning $100 into a HIGH-END Gaming PC', along with his 'Used PC Parts Hunt' series. I had always wanted a gaming pc, but my parents had a rule of if I wanted something, I could have it-as long as I bought it myself. My life can definitely be described as a nerd lifestyle. In elementary, I had no friends, and watched youtube videos of math, science, and tech all day. In middle school, I had a couple friends, but like me, they were nerds and liked watching videos instead of meeting new people. Now, I am in a better place, but my background of science and tech videos definitely helped me with my plan. I set on a mission. With $100 set aside and an ebay account, I was ready to do business. I don't know about other areas, but in Southern California, there is an app called Offerup which is sort of like Craigslist, but a lot more refined. Everyone here uses it in one way or another. Through Ebay, a lot of time trolling offerup, and meeting people all over my county and beyond, over the course of about 2 months, I turned my $100 into a big list of pc parts that I have now. I won't go over everything I had in possession, but here is my parts list as of today: Build 1: Cost:$250 Dell Optiplex, I5-4590 w/MOBO and cooler, 28GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDD, wifi - $120 EVGA 600W Silver - $10 RX 560D 4GB - $120 Build 2: THE RIG Cost: $355 i7-6800K w/MOBO and 64GB DDR4 3000 , 500GB HDD - $80 RX 570 8GB - $180 Segotep 650W Gold - $20 CPU Cooler - $25(Amazon) 120GB SSD - $25(Amazon) Antec EATX Case - $20 PCI-e Wifi - $5 Other Stuff 2x TI-84 Plus Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV (GPU cooler) i5-4460 I'm not going to say this was easy. I sunk countless hours into this project, and have bailed on my friends multiple times to meet up with people. I've had to sometimes drive for an hour and a half to meet up. I've met with people who don't wear masks, who have been half-naked, and a person who threatened to pull a gun on me. The products have not been the best, either. I've receive a bricked GPU, a MOBO that had been dunked in water, and countless others. My current pc (THE RIG) cannot run XMP and likes to bluescreen. Also, my idiocy has not treated the parts as well as I should have. I've ruined an Intel MOBO because I thought that the pins were supposed to be vertical, so i bent some out of anger. I have also dropped a Ryzen CPU, but I managed to resolder the pins. To me, though, it has been worth it. My end goal is to have Ryzen 5000 with RTX 3000 by the end of the year, and it's going very well. From the amount of stuff that I have, either through parting or selling whole rigs, I could have $1400 in my pocket. However, just like the rest of you, I hate scalpers. My area has been hit pretty hard by Covid, so I use this project as a way of giving back to the community. My knowledge of pc parts allows me to buy components labeled as broken and breathe life back into them, then sell them back to people who need it the most. I do have to make a profit, but oftentimes, I can sell a part for 75% of what it is going for on ebay, and still get money back from it. I sometimes get little kids who also want to build their own pc, so I am proud to give a discount just for them. Conclusion: It kind of sounds like I'm tooting my own horn on this post, but that's not my goal here. I simply wanted to share my story and inspire others to try out the used market and their hand at flipping. You don't have to do full-time, just when you see a good deal or something that is fixable, take a stab and see where it leads you. The more people that do this, the more that pc parts can live another day. The last thing we need is people paying scalpers and creating more e-waste than we have to. Two things to note: 1. If you do this, please be careful. Try to meet in well lit public places, and don't be afraid to back out of a deal if it's not going well. This all means nothing if you get stabbed while reaching in your pocket to grab your wallet. 2. Don't go to the dark side. It's easy to take advantage of people who are less educated than you and sell a horribly overpriced pc, but that ruins the whole objective of this. Try to get a good deal for you while also giving the buyer a good deal as well. It might take you longer to get where you want, but the community does not need more scalpers abusing people's ignorance for their own gain. The used market is a tricky, scary place. It could change on the flip of a dime and all you could do is watch powerlessly. But what's a challenge without a challenge? I know that a lot of people are waiting on a GPU, or want to upgrade some part of their rig. Why wait around waiting for prices to fall? Take the initiative and scrounge, trade, and buy your way to your dream pc. It will be well worth it. TL;DR: In 2 months time, I turned $100 in $1400 worth of pc parts. Using the used market, I was able to buy, sell, and trade my way there. It was not easy, and there are lots of pitfalls and dangers to look out for, but if you know what you're doing and you play your cards right, you can turn your Dream Build into The PC That You Have On Your Desk. You don't need a lot of experience as well. If you watch LTT or any other tech channels and have a basic understanding of supply and demand, and a basic knowledge of the pc market/crisis, then you are more than equipped for the job. I highly encourage anyone who has time and any money laying around to try this out for themselves. P.S. I haven't used reddit a lot, so I don't know the landscape, but I would like to document my progress on here. If you guys know of any, could you link a subreddit where I could do this? Edit: The whole reason I made this post is because I managed to snag an i7-6800k, 64GB 3000Mhz RAM, and a gpu cooler for $120. That was the most wild deal ever in my life. I was on an adrenaline rush for about 4 hours before and after that. Here, here, here, here, here, and here are all screenshots that I took of the deal and of the other stuff as proof, and I typed out the reasoning in one of the comments. To this day, I am still giddy with excitement over this deal, so I wanted to share with the rest of y'all to hopefully influence a couple people to go on a journey similar to mine. Is it possible to wipe windows on a hard disk and swap it to the ssd in my computer? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 07:06 AM PDT I have a 1 TB hdd and a 250 gb ssd for my new pc build. The 1TB hdd is being used from an old acer pc which has stopped working. The hard drive is still working and has a genuine copy of windows on it. Is it possible to move the windows installation on that HDD to the SSD. Any help will be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Air Duster/Compressor for high-end workstation PC Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:53 PM PDT Hi, my workstation PC is 3 years old. I want to clean it. Somebody recommended a can of air compressor spray but from reviews, sometimes instead of gas, some liquid came out. Do I need to worry about such liquid damaging the components? [link] [comments] |
Is there any reason not to have fans going full blast all the time? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:39 AM PDT Aside from noise levels, which I'm not concerned about, is any reason to not have all fans going full blast all the time? I figure it would draw more power, but again, that's not something that bothers me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:51 PM PDT I'm getting very bored of the lack of good airflow on my NZXT H500 so I'm looking to replace it. I want to get a new case similar size (slightly bigger is ok but smaller is preferable) with good airflow. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |

Does "registered" in memory suggest its a RDIMM module? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 12:18 PM PDT I'm trying to upgrade memory for my dell. The specification list the memory specification as " 1333 and 1600 DDR3 RDIMM " however I found a 16gb stick I would like to purchase listed as, DDR3 - 16 GB - DIMM 240-pin - registered will this module work with my system? I'm not sure if registered denoted? thanks. edit: my system is Workstation T7600 and the memory module in question is: https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-ddr3-16-gb-dimm-240-pin-registered/apd/cp5nf/memory?gacd=9646510-1025-5761040-266794296-0&dgc=st&ds_rl=1282786&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4ImEBhDFARIsAGOTMj9otExlEAgv1GK2A4kgMlAwb4CxoW9yERII-TJSssLF0KH2jdJuvf0aAhd7EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#techspecs_section [link] [comments] |
Question about rgb fans for the case Posted: 23 Apr 2021 06:43 AM PDT If you plug in fans to the motherboard rgb Slot thing, how are the colors controlled? Does it just do some random color? Do you change the color in the bios? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:57 AM PDT Hey! So I recently bought some new pc parts and put them all together with my old GPU, psu, and ssd here are my specs now MSI MPG Gaming Edge Wifi x570 Ryzen 9 3900XT PNY XLR8 NVME Gen 4 x4 (500GB) MSI Armor GeForce GTX 1060 OC 6GB (my old GPU) Kingston HyperX 240gb (win10 directory also my old ssd) Seagate Surveillance HDD 4TB (old drive from old pc) Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz 8gb (x2) Seasonic SI2II 550w. (My old psu from old rig) What's happening is im getting black displays, I see my monitor turn on with the whole screen light up but it doesn't show anything, I tried using hdmi, dvi, and dpi cables, even used another monitor but it's still the same results. Ryzen doesnt have any APU so im certain that my display cables are not directly plugged in to the motherboard but to my gpu. But when I first turned on after putting all the parts together, I was directed to the bios where I was able to fix my ram's mhz, after saving and reboot, I entered in my password and got access to the desktop where I was still able to transfer a few of my files from my ssd to another drive. After that, I shutdown my pc, removed all peripheral cables and the power cable. Removed my gpu, and relocate my AIO Cooler. Put back my gpu, connected all my peripherals again and turned it on, and that's where the black screen happened. I also tried reseating my ram, even tried booting with 1 ram. Cleared cmos Flashbios didnt do anything EZ Debug only lights up on Boot What could be the problem? People would tell me my 1060 is damaged, and should buy a new one, but im still earning to buy 3080 and a new PSU. Need help :( [link] [comments] |
