    Simple Questions - February 17, 2021

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

The Beginner's Guide to Building a PC

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 04:29 PM PST

I wrote a beginner's guide to PC building, I hope some of you find it helpful. I tried to simplify things to make it easy to read without knowing all of the jargon up front, so hopefully it's pretty straightforward and easy to follow. Would appreciate constructive feedback on any aspect of it, from actual content to formatting to anything else that comes up. Thanks!

Mega link for those who don't like Google: https://mega.nz/file/ENJAnL7C#BVP2riEOEUw7TSJyEz9pgoisIqHddURIdoA-WPU91iM

Edit: First of all, thanks for all of the feedback, comments, and awards. Did not expect this kind of reception. I'm reading through all of your feedback and, slowly but surely, working it in. Thanks!

Edit2: I realize there's some errors and typos that need remedying, and sections that ought to be added. This was inevitable. I've gotten a lot of feedback and I'm working as hard as I can to add recommended changes. It's going to take awhile but I assure y'all I'm working hard. Thanks for the patience!

For those running multiple-monitor configurations: Is there an easy one-click way to change multiple display settings?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 07:46 AM PST

Most of the time, I want my PC to boot to one monitor, technically a TV, for gaming. Sometimes, I want to easily change it to two monitors - one is an actual monitor and another is a drawing tablet - with the TV disconnected. Sometimes I want just the TV and the monitor without the tablet. If I just turned off the TV/tablet without changing the settings, I'd get windows flying off to the other screens without a way for me to see them. and so on.

On Linux, I'd use a bash script with several xrandr commands, but there's no Windows equivalent for that.

(I wasn't really sure where to ask this. Would post elsewhere if better sub is available?)

Edit: I wouldn't be asking with an entire thread if Win + P was a viable option. It only works for two screens. I have four to five screens on my desk.

Finally finished build after trial and error

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 01:51 PM PST

This build was mad annoying for me especially because I knew nothing. Watched so many videos but still didn't understand anything. Surfed through Reddit and many tech discords for help and I finally finished. Here's the final product.

Good monitor for a PS4 player transitioning into PC gaming in the future?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 10:41 AM PST

So I'm a current playstation player, looking to transition into PC eventually. I'm looking for a decent monitor that can maximize playstation capabilities, while not breaking the bank until I can upgrade in the next few years. I'll also use it for college too

I'm not sure what the budget should be, so maybe $300? I can go higher if need be. Just looking for the best I can get

Need help: PC won’t boot after bios update

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST

I recently got a new motherboard and CPU installed in my PC last weekend. Whenever I played a certain game or interacted with certain programs, my PC would reboot in a variable but short amount of time. I decided the best route of action was to update my BIOS, so that's what I did. However, now my PC will not post. I tried clearing cmos and removing my motherboard battery but nothing worked. When my PC boots up, the yellow VGA indicator is on. I also messed around with unplugging and plugging back in my GPU, still nothing.

PC Specs: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x Motherboard: asus tuf gaming x570-plus (wi-fi) atx am4 motherboard Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 CL15 Memory Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB GAMING X Video Card

Can anyone help? I can provide more information if needed.

    Deepcool Mattrexx 50

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 07:18 AM PST

Hey people, I'm building a pc and I'm picking out a case. I have my eyes on the Deepcool Mattrexx 50 case, which looks good, and comes with 4 fans. The only thing that's holding me back is the airflow. I'm sure it will be fine, but a mesh front case would be alot better. Some other people's opinions would be good so that's why I'm making this post. Also, in the picture, the fans are installed in front of the fan mounts for some reason so if I buy the case I'll just move them behind the mounts to give them more room.

    Can I teardown this prebuilt?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 11:29 AM PST

I've been trying to get a GPU for a month. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy this prebuild keep the gpu, and sell the rest of the parts? Is there some proprietary connectors or something I need to be aware of?

It's going for $1200. Assuming I can get back $500 for the rest of the parts, I'm looking at a $700 gpu.

    3080 for unexperienced pc builder

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 12:28 PM PST

What do you guys think of this build. I'm planning getting it as soon as I grab my hands on a 3080. I'm a bit scared about my cooling system, I had a liquid cooler, but with 0 fan on my last system and I read online that I need to ensure a good air flow. However, it behaves fine and have no issue, but I'm guessing the 3080 produces more heat, so I don't know if my cooling is sufficient.

It is quite expensive, if you guys have any suggestion to make it cheaper, I'm all ears ! best price would be 2500$ CAD, but I don't mind going over as you can see. I was maybe thinking of getting a lower CPU, but I'm unsure what is my bottleneck here.

My main uses for this computer will be playing games (I would really love 4k, but I don't have 4k monitor, will get one as soon as I see some discount) and software development (for job and and hobbies).

I'm thinking about buying another Case-Fan

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 12:27 PM PST

I'm thinking of buying another case fan but I'm not sure if I really should. My current configuration is 2 140mm fans at the front and 1 at the rear as an exhaust. I'm thinking about adding another 140mm fan to the top of the case. So which of these two options is the better one?

Current: 2 Front (Intake) + 1 Rear (Exhaust)

    New1: 2 Front (Intake) + 1 Top (Intake) + 1 Rear (Exhaust)

    New2: 2 Front (Intake) + 1 Top (Exhaust) + 1 Rear (Exhaust)

How do i get my tower off the floor without spending money on a stupid desk?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 01:13 PM PST

Looking at nice'ish' 2 person desks and unless you are dropping wads on GAMER desks everything seems to have no spot for a case or its in some cubby that kills airflow. right now, i just have it on a 16x12 box i threw together that hides cables, but i used rough cut wood from precuts and it was never SUPPOSED to be a permanent thing. Is there something y'all do special and cheap? I intend to wallmount my monitors when i figure out my desk situation since i have them and don't have desk mounts.

Rate my pc build (I haven't upgraded since fm2 lol)

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 10:41 AM PST

    Hi all,

I figured I'd upgrade from the fm2 socket days on my prebuily cyberpowerpc. I've been under a rock in the pc world, how has it been? Any wars? Lmao anyways, I'm going from this:

    ASRock fm2a88m AMD A6-6400K 3.9 Dual core (OC'd to 4.3)/ stock cooler EVGA GTX 1050 ti 8gb ddr3 500w psu

    To this:

MSI b450m Pro-VDH Max AMD Ryzen 2600 + wraith cooler EVGA GTX 1050 Ti (this will be upgraded later when inflation chills out) 16 gb ddr4 EVGA bronze 600w psu

Spent roughly $400 (including corsair case) and kept old gc and hdd out of old comp, also have a mSATA ssd from a shot acer nitro 5 laptop. I also don't play very many games (a lot of pre-2015 games. Tf2, cod waw, red orchestra 2, verdun, wot, etc.)

Did I scavenge well? What should I expect to see different out of any of this? Any recommendations? Thanks!

Does SIP protect pc components from lightning strikes?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 01:25 PM PST

So my pc suffered from a lightning strike and it won't turn back on but my PSU ( aerocool vx plus 650) had SIP (surge inrush protection) , it was unfortunately a direct lightning strike but all peripherals that were plugged in are still functioning and i don't see any signs of physical damage or smell any burns from the components. I am just wondering if the psu' SIP protected my other components in exchange for its own life

    Sniping Graphics cards

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 12:58 PM PST

Hey guys I want to build my first pc soon and i've been waiting a while for the hype to die down along with costs but sadly it hasn't. I decided to try to snipe one like the gtx 1660 or any similar price. Thinking to spend around $200-$300 but not get ripped off. Or if it's better to just buy a cheap $60 one and wait till prices drop, would love some help from people since I don't know the first thing about pc's. Also i was told buying prebuilt is an option as the graphics cards prices aren't inflated on there, would love any advice sorry if it's a lot of info. Thanks!

Need help picking a suitable GPU for the Ryzen 7 3700x that's in my price range!

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 10:40 AM PST

I'm looking to build a pc that can handle streaming and light editing for under $1500 but can't seem to land on a good GPU

I'm currently considering the following cards:

    - MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ti x Trio "$660"

    - Asus GeForce RTX 3070 TUF "$650"

    - EVGA GeForce 3070 FTW3 "$680"

If it matters, I'm planning on going for a mostly-white aesthetic with a little RGB for some "thpithe", I was just planning on dismantling and spray painting the plastic panels white

Here is my current pcpartpicker, If you have any extra notes, PLEASE COMMENT

Issues with B450 Tomahawk Mac Drivers

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 02:12 PM PST

Hey guys! I am a new member of the build-it-yourself PC space. I needed help with my mobo. I have a b450 tomahawk max from MSI. I have my boot drive which is a 970 EVO. I have installed Windows 10 through a USB key, and started installing Rocket League, my most played game. I started playing and everything was awesome 165 FPS, at all high settings. That is with just a 1650 too! But about an hour in I got a BSOD of SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. Could you guys help me out? This is a reoccurring thing btw. Thanks!

    OS Windows 10 Home - 64 bit
    Monitor Pixio PX278 27" 2560 x 1440 144Hz

Any advice for a first-time builder?

I am planning on buying all parts except for CPU and GPU and waiting for them to be in stock, is this a good or bad idea?

Apart from that do all my parts look ok? Is there anything I should change? and Will the 3 fans that come with the case be enough to keep it all cool?

Thank you in advance for any comments.

I have these 6 uphere RGB fans from amazon along with a Lian Li strimer for the 24 pin... what software could control those along with my ram? I have the included uphere fan controller plugged into the CPU fan port and the MB Sync plugged in as well, the Strimer is just plugged into the controller it comes with and that is receiving SATA power... I don't see how I can control the Strimer via software. There is a spare port on the fan controller I could plug the Strimer into if thats possible somehow.

    1060 6gb vs R9 390x vs 980 ti.

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST

im upgrading from a 1050 ti so all of these are significantly better lol.

I want to be able to play VR titles as well as some games on ULTRA.

I can find these super easy for good prices on the used market as well, though the 980 ti is a tough one to find currently.
