This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Well that's was anticlimactic ...

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 11:27 AM PST

So I was planing to build a pc for about 5 months now. A $2000 dollar build so kinda a big deal. Then my dad finally came to my room and said that we could buy it that night. I on pcpartpicker to make sure I'm not forgetting something. Nope all set. Notice that I need to but my case from Newegg and the rest from Amazon. Go into checkout in Newegg. THIS ITEM CANT BE SHIPED TO YOUR COUNTRY. Ok no big deal, I can try to get a case locally. Go into Amazon and proceed to check out. THE CPU CANT BE SHIPPED TO YOUR LOCATION. Bro I cant even get a GPU because of the shortage. Now the 3 main components in any pc are not available. BRUH

How do I upgrade from SATA SSD to NVMe for main drive?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 11:11 AM PST

I'm planning on upgrading my SATA ssd to an M.2 NVMe, and I'm not sure if the way I plan on doing it is correct, as I've never done something like this before.

    What I plan is:

Make a full backup of Windows 10 on an external hdd using the built-in tool in Windows

Disconnect my current SSD, install the new one

Install a fresh copy of Windows 10 on the new drive using the same USB I used the first time I installed windows

Connect my external hdd and transfer my files back to my main drive

Again, this is my first time upgrading a drive, so I'm really not sure if what I have in mind is correct. Are there things I should prepare for in advance, or any other details I'm unaware of? Also, if I want to use my SATA as a secondary drive, how would I do that?

GTX 970 with 10850k and Gigabyte AORUS PRO AX

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 01:44 PM PST

Hey guys any help is appreciated.

So I recently bought an Intel 10850k along with the Gigabyte AORUS PRO AX (with 32 gigs of ram) and paired it with a GTX 970. Unfortunately, the GTX 970 displays NOTHING. Only after I remove the graphics card and use the integrated graphics on the motherboard does it show images. This mobo runs on UEFI.

I also bought a 3800x with an ASUS X570-E paired with 16gigs of ram and the GTX 970 still fails to display anything. (unfortunately returned it) This mobo also runs on UEFI.

I also know for a fact the GTX 970 is working perfectly, wires are in place, the LED lights light up, and the fans spin, and it works with my old setup which is : AMD PHENOM II X6 1045T and the mobo is Gigabyte 970A-UD3 8 gb ram, NO PROBLEMS. The graphics card is a Gigabyte xtreme gaming g1 GTX 970 graphics card if this can bring anything up.

So yes I went into motherboard and changed the configuration of the pCIE slots to x8/x8 that doesn't work. I then changed the boot of PCI slots to LEGACY and basically changed EVERYTHING to legacy and the graphics card still would not work. I've read somewhere that the GTX 970 may need a bios flash to work with UEFI, but at the same time, many are saying that the card already comes with a UEFI bios that is backwards compatible with legacy mobos (which is why it worked with my old setup) so I'm at a loss of what to do next. (especially with graphics cards being extra pricey and super rare to find at the moment.)

So please if anyone knows any details on whats going on, i would really really appreciate it. Please and thank you.

Buy prebuilt with 30 series or wait until I can buy one separately at MSRP

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 01:24 PM PST

I've been a console gamer my whole life from N64, dreamcast, x360, xbox one, and have been holding out for the series X. But it doesn't look like I'll be able to get one for at least a few months.

Every time I wait online for a restock, they are gone within seconds and right after I refresh for an hour, I say "screw it" and look at gaming PC's and PCPartPicker because I'm fed up with the stupid console released 3 months ago being out of stock.

So now, I've decided I want a PC.

I'm pretty savvy when it comes to PC's. But what the heck is with the graphics cards. Same situation as the XBOX/PS5. All sold out. I know why and everything but c'mon.

    But my question is.

Do I buy a prebuilt with a 30 series (looking at builds with a 3070, i9, 32gb for ~$2300) or wait until I can get a 30 series for MSRP and build my own? I know i'm in /r/buildapc but who the heck knows when they will be available readily

I play alot of Warzone, so wanting to get something capable running it at ~140fps at 1440P

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

    And also obligatory fuck scalpers/bots.

    New power supply problems

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 01:19 PM PST

Got a 750W power supply and nothing turns on at all. Everything is plugged in and there's not even standby lights on cpu. I had it unplugged before I disconnected the old one and before I installed the cables on new one. I think I may have just got a defective one?

Gigabyte GP-PGM - Issues, issues, issues Hardware

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 12:31 PM PST

    TL;DR

Gigabyte is refusing to support a product they know to be problematic. This is as of the time of writing still in production with the same components. We haven't asked Gigabyte for a public statement.

Most likely problem - Main FETs

To start, a quote from Aristeidis Mpitziopoulos', which in this article will be referred to as Aris, review on Techpowerup about this very unit below.

Jilin Sino-Microelectronics provides the main FETs, and as you can see, they didn't survive my tests. They died in a glorified way, making one of the loudest bangs I have ever heard.

    source: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/gigabyte-gp-p750gm-750-w/

This is something alarming on it's own already. The main FETs on the power supply explode after having handled a heavy load. They didn't fail during the actual OPP/OCP testing itself, but a few minutes after when the unit was turned on again. But this is sadly only the component that seems to cause most of this issues...

Gigabyte handling this finding - we tested it and it's fine

From here, Aris attempted to send his findings to Gigabyte. They chose to not recall the unit they sent him and tested around 10 units internally in their RMA division. From here, no issues were found and this was reported back to Aris. This is in every way a flawed way of testing. More about this can be found in the video here:

    Unit Test

Gigabyte handling it's consumers - refusing support

Gigabyte has had many reviews on sites like NewEgg that claim DOA units, extreme coilwhine, killed components and much more. Normally I'm not one to react off consumer reviews because of their flawed nature, but when almost a majority of users has failures and there's a ground of suspicion what is the problem it becomes a different story. A few quotes below

Cons: -Dead on arrival -Everything else about this product is irrelevant because it simply doesn't work

Overall Review: It gave power to the motherboard, but once I hit the power button all I got was a loud *CLICK* from the PSU, and nothing.

    Cons: Dead on arrival
Overall Review: Heard a lot of bad things about this PSU, and I can see why. Opened mine and tested it, wouldn't even turn on. I only got this because of the 3070 combo deal and figured I would give it a shot in my build but I'm glad I tested it first before frying all of my components. My advice is to avoid this one and go for a more reliable unit.

Overall Review: -100% do not recommend, if you value your PC -Connected my RGB fan controller hub to the Gigabyte PSU, just like I had with my Corsair PSU via 6-pin to SATA connector. My Corsair PSU hadn't given me this issue. As soon as I powered up my computer I head popping, noticed a burning plastic smell, I believe I saw a spark, and all 6 of my RGB fans connected to the stopped working. Turned it off to discover that the fans were the source of the burning, and the fan controller hub was no longer responsive to the remote that came with it.

Cons: - During heavy load such as while playing Monster Hunter World with full settings on 1440p, will make clicking noises and crash your system
Overall Review: I would not recommend this PSU for heavy gaming. It will crash your computer. This came with an RTX 3070 bundle so I cannot return it without returning the whole bundle, but just be aware this thing can't handle heavy load.

Cons: power supply was dead on arrival and was sold as a combo item so now I can not get a refund for the defective power supply.
Overall Review: Don't buy this power supply.

Cons: Came completely dead. Tested it by running a wire from green to black and also while fully plugged into system. Both times it makes a click with a weak fan spin and then immediately stops.
Overall Review: I bought this with a bundle with a 3070 and this is just wrong. They shouldn't sell massively broken products to consumers.

Overall Review: I just received this power supply as part of an RTX 3070 combo. Merely loading a game like Cyberpunk causes the power supply to click and crash my system. It happens every single time.

Cons: Loud Died after a month
Overall Review: Very loud, woke up one morning to find my computer not turning on, turns out the psu died I'm just thankful that it didn't fry any of my other parts in the process. There's a reason they made you buy these in the 30 series bundles because they're worthless

Cons: The coil whine is extremely loud.
Overall Review: Too loud to use.

Cons: Put together my whole build and when I powered it on all I got was a single click from the PSU. After hours of troubleshooting, I picked up a Corsair PSU, swapped it in and the system came to life. Luckily, it didn't damage any of my components. Now I'm stuck with a broken PSU because it can only be returned if I give up the whole bundle. They really need to take this product off the market.

Overall Review: So I was another 3070 combo victim. But decided to go along with it since I was building a 2nd PC for the family as I built my new gaming rig. 750W was overkill but needed some sort of PSU. Unit was nice enough, worked fine for a few hours then I heard this deafening whine coming from the unit. In all my years of PC building (always used Corsair PSUs) never heard that sound. So I shut everything down and did some research. Found some tips that may make it go away, so I let the PC run doing some medium load bench marking to see if it would work itself out. The noise did go away here and there but would always return. Sadly need to remove unit from the build and return it as Gigabyte customer service is near useless. After getting a scratched 3070 (That gigabyte support to me to just return it, ha yeah right!) and now this defective PSU, I've avoided gigabyte in the past but definitely will do so in the future. So many other vendors that have quality customer service.

Cons: When testing out the power supply, it was dead on arrival and would not turn on. When calling the customer service of the power supply, they told me to contact Newegg and see if they could replace the product. I am very confused with who to contact about this power supply and why it was dead on arrival.

Overall Review: I would not recommend this product until I receive a replacement to test it.

Cons: - Cables not labelled - Deafening coil whine

Overall Review: - Have to take the loss because NewEgg won't refund me or replace it with another model since I bought it in a bundle. My only option is to receive the exact same PSU which will probably either be DOA or have the similar coil whine issue based on other reviews.

Overall Review: I was trying to turn my dell Optiplex 7020 into a sleeper build, everything went well until I turned on the PSU. Heard a loud spark so I checked everything. My GPU (Strix 2060) and everything still works as I am writing this, but my boot SSD died with the spark. As much as this PSU is getting I would not recommend this and if you were the person who bought a 3070 combo with this do not use the PSU.

Cons: Does NOT provide enough juice for a RTX3070. Had a bunch of crashes and spent a whole day diagnosing what may be wrong. Initially I thought it was the card however I decided to listen to the reviews on here, even though most had a DOA unit mine seemed to work except the card was crashing a few minutes into games. It is not strong enough to power the card it was bundled with and I am stuck since I cannot return this. NEWEGG will not take returns on this package.
Overall Review: Replaced with a Corsair unit that the instability so far has gone away. Cables on the Corsair are also much beefier than they are on this one.

These are a few of the more elaborate reviews. As of the time of writing, 142 out of the 242 reviews on the PSU are 1 star or "egg", all coming down to either extreme coil whine, system instability or the unit dying with no way of returning it without including the 3000 series card they bought it with. Even if it's understandable that Newegg/Gigabyte doesn't want a scalper to buy this and attempt to return the PSU, with a genuine failure this is an outright stupid thing to do.

    Source: https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-gp-p750gm-750w/p/N82E16817233029?Description=gigabyte psu&cm_re=gigabyte_psu-_-17-233-029-_-Product

What now? - Forced recall and public apology

Honestly, the best thing Gigabyte can do right now is putting on a forced recall on the unit. There are no exact numbers out there on the actual failure rate of the unit, but this isn't down to an early production sample unit or the occasional "lemon" you get with mass production. This is a widespread issue that can only be solved by using different parts in the PSU. They can either choose to take it off the market, issue a full recall and give people their money back, or introduce a revision/newer version of the product with higher end FETs from for example Infineon, with likely also a lower OCP/OPP setting.

    Upgrading from a 4770k, 780ti?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 01:57 PM PST

My build currently consists of a 4770k@4.3Ghz, 780ti, 16GB of ram, running a 1440p 60hz monitor. I was wondering if I were to update now, what I should upgrade to? I was thinking of getting a 3060 ti of 3070 (or maybe the 3060 when it's released later this month), but not sure if the CPU would become too big of a bottleneck. I also mainly play older games, and not really any AAA titles, so I don't think I would benefit much from newer techs ilke DLSS. I live relatively close to a Microcenter, so I think I could probaby get my hands on a 3060Ti/3070.

Pro-tip: 4GB graphics cards can't mine Ethereum anymore, so if you are looking for a card, go for those as they can be had at relatively reasonable prices now.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 05:26 PM PST

    Hey guys,

Because the DAG file for Ethereum is over 4GB, 4GB graphics cards can't mine Ethereum anymore. I would advise looking for cards to look for used 4GB AMD RX 4xx and 5xx or used 4GB Nvidia 9xx series cards or 3GB 1060s if you need a graphics card to tide yourself over until the cryptocurrency bubble fades or supply catches up with demand.

I know prices for these older cards are still inflated, but if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg, they are not a bad option.

    Multi Monitor Office PC

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 01:36 PM PST

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to put this since I probably won't end up actually building a PC (I am also posting in /suggestapc, but the subreddit seems pretty small), but I'm looking for a 3 monitor capable PC setup for my mother. She's going to school to be a legal secretary and having trouble with the online classes.

Since she doesn't want to wait until I get a new GPU and give her my gaming setup, I'm looking for something under $500, that can support a 3 monitor office setup. I've been looking and most prebuilt office PC's are weirdly balanced. It'll have 8GB of DDR4 RAM and an SSD, but integrated graphics with only one output and an old Gen 3 CPU.

Any suggestions would be great. I was looking at this:

    https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/7814504/HP-Pavilion-TP01-0066-Desktop-PC/

But that CPU with that GPU seems silly, and most of the price is probably just that Ryzen 7.

If it's more affordable to order the parts and put it together I'm totally down to do that. I actually have a case that I bought for myself already, but since I can't get the GPU I want for a few months it's just been sitting around.

    5600x vs 5800x

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 12:26 PM PST

    Hey! I am currently considering upgrading from my i5-6500 and 16GB DDR4 2133 to either 5600x or 5800x with 16GB DDR4 3600

My question is now, will a 5600x be enough for the usages of programming, gaming 1080p maybe 1440p and streaming?

And if I take a 5800x, what kind of PSU do I need? I wanted to get the 600W pure power 11

    Thanks in advance!

Built my first pc but no monitor signal?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 02:25 PM PST

So I've just built my first gaming pc. I turned it on and it looks like it's working. the lights are on and the fans are spinning, however, my monitor keeps saying no signal. I plugged my hdmi cable into my Graphics Card slot but it keeps saying no signal?

Is this a GPU issue? I'm a bit worried right now. I know for a fact I haven't broken anything on the motherboard apart from that one notch that helps to keep the graphics card in place when I pulled out the card to make sure it was in properly (though I heard that doesn't matter anyway). What could be the problem?

Also are the GPU fans meant to be spinning? Mine don't when I boot up the pc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Changed almost everything on my PC, need your help for the final part : RAM

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 02:15 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I m in the last sprint about my PC. Everything is almost set, except for the GPU (I just wait for restocks) and the ram, and for this one, I ll need your help.

My PC Spec (I ll add here what is asked if I forget anything, I ll just post what I think is relevant for the ram choice) :
    - Motherboard : Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO
    - CPU : Intel Core i9 9900Kf
    - CPU Cooler : Noctua NH-D15 (it's pretty big so I can't have really tall ram

    The ram I'm thinking : HX433C16PB3K2

So, I found some I like, and are compatible with my motherboard, but they are at 2x16Go and 3333MHz while the one I have now is 2x8go and 2133MHz. If what I found is correct the one I have now will slow the new one, so, is 2133MHz slow or okay. I play a lot of videogames, max settings, I do some editing, I stream (not having a second PC to do this yet), and it can happens that I have a lot of multi tools open, like an emulator, a game, streaming software, internet, audio and camera editing on the fly.

I hope the detailed I give you can be helpful to give me any advices. If you have further more questions, don't hesitate to ask, I ll answer.

Thanks for reading, have a nice day

help with internal hard drive not showing up

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 02:06 PM PST

Just took apart and put back together my PC to clean and upgrade but now my hard drives are not showing up. I have tried moving the SATA cables all around the motherboard, connecting one at a time and even using different cables for the SATA and PSU connection. I am unable to see if the disks are Disk Management, BIOS, etc. Everything was showing up and initialized prior to me taking apart the PC.

Edit: Currently have Ryzen 7 2700x, B350 PC MATE, 3060ti, EVGA Supernova GT 750w, and trying to set up a 2TB & 1TB HDD by Seagate

    Interesting computer shut down error

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 06:28 AM PST

My recently purchased prebuilt pc ryzen 5 5600x, rtx 3070, gigabyte x570 gaming x, 2x 8gb triforce ddr 4 3200 ram, would shut down windows 10 normally, but the fans and rgb would stay on indefinitely. Only a hard shutdown with the on/off button, or pulling the plug, would turn off the hardware.

After trouble shooting windows and bios settings, the problem was finally solved with a bios update.

Just some info for anyone with a similar issue

Monitor signal being lost for a few seconds then returning to desktop with no. Background or icons.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 01:56 PM PST

New computer. New Asus mb, 10900k, rtx3070.

Was fine for two days straight. Gaming.

Turned on the day after and have been browsing the Internet only and the monitor has lost signal twice in an hour. The first time it came back on fine but the second time the desktop was black and no icons. Mouse didn't work straight away the second time either.

Restarted pc and noticed right on the edge of the screen I coukd see magnified version of my desktop behind my desktop. Then I noticed that the desktop had a weird invisible overlap like it was cut in half down the middle and stuck together badly.

I took out the dp cable out of the pc and put it in the second slot and the weird looking desktop went back to normal.

Gigabyte Aorus Master Memory QVL Vermeer (Zen3) Excel Version with Google, Newegg, Amazon Links

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 10:00 AM PST

I wanted low timing high density ram for my use case (4x16gb or 2x32gb for 64gb total), and wanted it on the QVL for the least headache. Annoyingly enough, even though the PDF for the QVL's clearly came from an excel file (and even had .xlsx in the name of the pdf Gigabyte publishes), they only publish a PDF version. This makes filtering annoying or impossible. For example I wanted to filter certain frequencies, low cas timings, and 4 slot compatibility.

For the community I converted it to excel and added 3 columns with newegg/amazon/google links based off the part ID, to see if you can even get the ram or easily check prices. Hope this saves someone else some time from doing the same.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OM5eoNSrl5VMhI1gZvvbRF7S0QXCRvu2WTRJSwULv5U/edit#gid=1329655806

You can filter it in google sheets by creating a filter view or simply download and open it in excel for easier filtering. Have fun.
