This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I broke my M.2 Drive with a chopstick

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:00 AM PST

    I fucked up.

I was trying to take my gpu out and was struggling for a good hour. The little clip that holds it in place for some reason had the resistance of a fucking Boulder and I had barely any wiggle room to work my finger in.

So I went to google and hear people try an eraser head or lo and behold a chopstick. I jammed that fucker right in and it ends up slipping and slamming right in the middle of my ssd. Bent that sucker right in half.

    I hate my life.

I bought an ASUS ROG 5500XT for $450...but hear me out...

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:29 PM PST

So, I just finished my 1st ever PC build (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/MurphSAN84/saved/#view=TgLcHx) and all I was missing was a graphics card. I found an ASUS ROG 5500XT for 450 on Amazon, and tbh it was the best card I could find at the lowest price point. I went ahead and bit because I'm eager to get this PC going. Some would call me crazy but I don't really think so. Here's why: It could be well into next year before we see any decent prices on GPU's....by that time this card will have paid for itself. Also, I think about all the things I waste my money on... games, gas, eating out. Well, I've cut down on all of that since this pandemic started, and let's be honest, 3 trips to a legit restaurant is almost 150. Last but not least...stimmy checks. So, I guess in the end I'm trying to justify to myself that paying over 200+ more for this card was the right choice. What do you think?

Ya’ll remember when 2080ti’s were selling for $300 when RTX 3000 was announced? We had no idea what was coming

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:01 PM PST

I remember everyone jumping ship as soon as they could get 2080ti performance for $500 (or thats what we thought at the time) and i saw 2080ti's on hardware swap and other marketplaces for $300, i was very tempted to grab one but i am still happy with my rx 5700 xt.

    GPU and CPU prices

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 05:35 AM PST

So it's no surprise that these prices have skyrocketed recently. And the ones I had my eyes on 6 months ago like the 1650 super and the rx 570 just isn't viable anymore. Are there any less known options for gpus or even CPUs that could crank out 1080p at 60fps on medium settings?

Is there a site that lists pre covid gpu prices?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:32 AM PST

Looking to build a pc for the first time (I know, bad time, wait 6 months etc) but I'm having a hard time gauging how much retailers are marking up their prices. Would be great to have a baseline to work off.

Fixing a used PC for my brother, need some advice

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:35 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/ppdpBd5

I got this old pc from a friend, he said he was having some trouble with it booting up years ago and tried to fix it but bent some pins in the process. I want to try to fix it and give it to my brother but I don't really know what to replace. I'm assuming the motherboard is step one but do I just need to replace the motherboard or do I need to replace something else that requires soldering or gluing, etc. If its just the motherboard do I get the same model or something else? Would it still be compatible with the other components?

Getting a warning on pcpartpicker, but I don't know if it's an easy fix or if I can't fix it at all

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 08:50 AM PST

    • Some AMD B350 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

My PC specs just in case: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fvfpJf

I just need to know if I can fix it or if I need to order a different one altogether. If it's fine, then send me a message and tysm!

What type of PC do I build as a software engineer?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:20 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm a software engineer, and regularly compile large amounts of code in Visual Studio as well as running VMs in Docker for app development. My workstation at work had either 24 or 40 cores (or threads, I don't remember), but I can't go there due to COVID. I already have an RX 570 and am looking to build or buy a pc around that for under $500-ish.

I can't decide whether to go AMD or Intel, however. Clock speeds or cores? What do I base this around, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

i7 4770 or i3 9100f? (or other suggestion in around the same price range)

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:21 PM PST

Hi, I'm planning on upgrading my cpu. i've been using an old i3 4170 until now. I want to build a budget pc, and I'm planning on buying either an i7 4770 or an i3 9100f. Is higher clock speed or higher number of cores more important?

My CPU fan screws pulled out of my motherboard idk what to do.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:36 AM PST

So I tried to remove my CPU fan so I had room to plug in the CPU power cord, but it looks like while turning the screws it just pulled off the piece connecting to the motherboard and left four gaping holes. Would this be considered a faulty motherboard or did I do something wrong.

My First Serious Build - Whiteout

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:38 PM PST

I built a fairly basic PC some eight or so years ago, but it was on its last leg by today's standards. I finally saved up enough to build this aesthetically-pleasing whiteout beast (by my standards) for some gaming and video editing. The lights are a lot more white than blue in person, but I couldn't get my photos to show true color. So happy to finally have this thing! :)

    Case Decision.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 11:34 AM PST

I am moving my build from a Fractal Design Meshify C in White to a New Corsair 5000x.

All my hardware is black with white cables and purple lighting.

My question is: Would black hardware look better with a black case or should I spice it up with a white case? All my peripherals are black and my desk is white so I'm kinda at a dilemma. White case or black case? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Is Micro ITX even an option for FAN-ONLY cooling, but still a very good gaming PC?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 01:06 PM PST

I feel like I've really been learning a *TON* over the past few months about building a PC, thanks in very large part to this sub! You guys are okay!

Something I'm still tripping over, though, is how feasible it is to cool a gaming PC using only fans (*heh*), and what the smallest realistic form-factor would be?

See, my current desktop is like 10 years old (*maybe older*). I ordered it through iBuyPower, and it had liquid cooling installed; I knew jack about PC's then, other than this thing was both expensive and *beastly*! But it eventually ran out of coolant, which I didn't realize, which completely fried the motherboard and had to be replaced. I simultaneously had the PC repair shop switch to just fan cooling.

So I may be unreasonably anti-liquid cooling, but I definitely *am* anti-liquid cooling. I didn't even realize how much until the other day, I started picking out the other parts I need, when I had intense anxiety about getting an AIO liquid-cooler, and I was just like "you know... I think I'd rather sacrifice elsewhere, than risk that again".

Right now, the only part I've *already* purchased is a Ryzen 5 5600X, and I'm planning to get an RTX 3080 (or possibly 3070, if I actually saw one in stock). I've been unsure of what case I wanted, though; I personally like the idea of a smaller form-factor case.

Specifically, the Sliger SM580 and the Cooler Master NR200P (some video reviews suggested the "P" version, even if you didn't use the glass side; I don't remember why). I freaking *LOVE* the look of the Corsair Graphite 380t (specifically the Yellow version), but apparently it's been discontinued and no used ones available.

Anyways... the primary goal with this PC is to setup in my living-room, and treat very much as a "video game console, but also with streaming". There is a chance I might do more with it -- recording stuff, working on coding stuff -- but nothing terribly ambitious, I would say. So I actively *do NOT want* a bunch of RGB lighting. I also personally find that stuff (and the tempered glass stuff) kind of tacky, imo.

    TL;DR

I'm trying to build a gaming PC, but I only want to use air cooling. Would that prevent me from using micro ITX cases, if I'm aiming for a Ryzen 5 5600X and hopefully an RTX 3080?

Testing my Components without a Case

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:58 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I just had all my components arrive except for the case. I just want to test the motherboard, cpu etc to see if it boots or I have some DoA component. Would it be safe to do this? And how should I go about it? I'm mostly worried about my DarkRock Pro 4 Cooler which seems really big and I don't know if I can/should be mounting it outside a case.

    Thank you!

    What should I upgrade first?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:42 PM PST

Here's my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JXztDx I completed this build last summer as a get me through the year budget gaming/streaming rig. Now I'm looking to do a little upgrading to it; what would be the suggested upgrade path for it? And what would everyone suggest for an upgrade under $400?

Price in the UK for RTX 3080

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:29 PM PST

I'm in the UK and starting my first PC build. I have a Ryzen 7 5800x with 16GB of ram and I'm looking for a GPU. But because of the GPU stock shortage the price for GPUs aren't on the websites and I'm definitely not getting one from a scalper. Does anyone what a good price should be?

Help me build a new PC in 2021

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 05:29 AM PST

Hey guys, please help buy a new PC in 2021
    Current build from 2016:
    CPU: Intel I7-6700k
    GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080
    Mobo: Asus Z170-P
RAM: Kingstom HyperX Fury 2400 mhz 16gb
I'm using this build since the late 2016 and although it's still alright I kinda wish to upgrade to the next gen components.
I'm gaming on a 2K (2560x1440) monitor so I kinda started to struggle reaching high FPS on Ultra settings in some games (e.g., Red Dead 2, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Cyberpunk 2077 etc.)
What upgrade suggestions you can give me for changing the 4 components above + a new good PSU for running them ? I'm planning to use the new PC for 4-5 years at least.

Personally I was thinking for a Nvidia 3080, Intel i9-10900k, some new RAM on at least 3200 mhz, and obviously a good mobo (maybe ASUS again ?) for the i9.

Will a GPU fit in this motherboard?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 01:49 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    CPU: i3-10100

    Mobo: ASRock B460M-HDV

    Case: H510

    HDD: Seagate Blue 2GB

    PSU: CX650M

    RAM: Aegis 16GB

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I'm checking the motherboard out up close and I'm realizing I may not be able to fit a graphics card (1070 or 970) in there. Does it just look like that or will it not fit?

Alternatives to a budget build pc for playing older games

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 11:09 AM PST

Hi all, my other half has recently been more interested in getting their own PC to play older, potentially less demanding games like Sims 3, Cities: Skylines & Minecraft, maybe run some old school emulators for PS1/2 games. Currently she uses my PC, but it's getting to a point where we both want to be playing at the same time, so a PC for her seems the best option.

We've been trying to put together a build over the last few weekends, and even taking into account the GPU shortages at the moment, I'm unable to find a build less than ~£650, using second-hand parts I'm finding on eBay in some cases. I've put the pcpartpicker build below:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel Core i5-9400F 2.9 GHz 6-Core Processor £119.99 @ AWD-IT
CPU Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler £29.02 @ Amazon UK
Motherboard Gigabyte B365M DS3H WIFI Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard £58.00
    Memory Kingston HyperX Fury 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory £67.11 @ Amazon UK
Storage Western Digital Blue 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive £81.99 @ Amazon UK
Video Card Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 3 GB WINDFORCE OC Video Card £185.00
Case Thermaltake S100 Snow Edition MicroATX Mini Tower Case £50.47 @ Scan.co.uk
Power Supply Corsair TXM Gold 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply £69.21 @ CCL Computers
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total £660.79
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2021-02-13 19:02 GMT+0000

At this point I'm really just wondering the following: * Have I chosen parts that are better than they need to be? * Should I try and scour eBay constantly for used parts and save money that way? * Is there an alternative to building a PC from parts that might end up cheaper (maybe trying to find a second-hand pre-built)?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
