    Simple Questions - February 06, 2021

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

The prices are just ridiculous, GTX 1660s for €550 ~ $600

Prices are actually insane in Europe, if you have the luck of finding one in stock, it will cost ridiculous amounts of money. €550 for a GTX 1660S

I did it!! I Finally built my PC!!

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 01:43 AM PST

Thank you to all the people whom I've talked to on this subreddit and gave their insights when I first posted here 'bout the components!! After almost 3 months I've finally finished my build ❤️ As a complete beginner (NEVER BUILT A PC MY WHOLE LIFE) The amount of fear and frustration while building my PC can never beat the happiness I felt the moment I pushed that "on" button.

This is such an achievement for me who never had any knowledge when it comes to building computers ❤️ and now I gained one!

Ps. I actually thought I killed my PC the first time I turned it on lol turns out after flicking that PSU power I have to push that "on" button on the case LMAO I have to disassemble everything and figure out what I did wrong I even went to the point I have to jump start my PSU xD

So... when will prices finally go down?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 09:26 AM PST

About a year ago I was planning to build a budget pc for 300. A year later and it's 420. Not bad, but quite high. But in a couple months, it raised up to 500. I already bought the case too, so the bulk of that price is from the CPU and motherboard. In a few weeks it'll be my birthday and I'll probably have 450, but even then the prices will probably rise even before that. When can I expect them to go down?

Buying used rtx 3070, need some advice

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 01:07 PM PST

Hey guys, thinking about getting an apparently 1 month used rtx 3070. The guy said he had a receipt on his order (from the local shop he got it from) and a 1 year warranty as well, which seems tempting.

Only problem is I tried asking him if I could locally check out the gpu with furmark he says he cannot see me in person due to covid and he has a family, which is reasonable however he proposed as an alternative to record a video of the gpu inside the computer unedited with a benchmark for 5 mins.

Is it still safe to buy or will I be in danger of getting scammed? I feel like this is enough to prove the authenticity of the deal but if im missing something id love to know.

Ghost S1 SFFPC Build Plan Help

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 01:38 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes :)

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I am going to be using this computer as my daily driver. I mostly do programming and run Linux as my main OS. I don't think I write/run anything especially intensive. For reference, during normal use without Chrome, I consume under 1GB of RAM on my laptop and about 5GB with Chrome doing its thing :').

I do plan on dual booting Windows for games. In terms of games, I don't game that much and don't play any AAA titles. I will mainly run light-mid level games like Overwatch, Minecraft with shaders, League of Legends, Factorio, etc.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

My current setup consists of two 1440p monitors. My main monitor is a LG 27GL83A-B and my side monitor is a vertical ASUS PB258Q Ideally I want to be able to play on a single monitor (LG) at 1440p@144hz.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My current budget is around $1.5k but I'm okay with going a little above (max maybe $2k).

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

    Additional details

I have already picked up the LOUQE Ghost S1 MKIII case and a friend is willing to sell his 2060 Super to me for $320, hence the price above.

The main concerns I have with this build is if this is the best bang for buck I can get right now because I'm not exactly in need of the best of the best hardware since I don't play intensive AAA titles. I also do not know if I should wait for new gen stuff to come out or wait for restocks so prices can possibly drop.

Additional details no one asked for

I put this at the bottom to save people from having to read it from the start but I recently graduated and managed to get a decent first job so I wanted to reward myself with building this dream build of mine as my very first desktop pc. I've used a laptop to game on since I can remember so I am excited to join the glorious pc master race. I have been in love with the Ghost S1 case ever since I laid my eyes on it so this is definitely a very exciting time for me to be able to finally have my dream build come true! Thanks in advance to everyone!! :)

    10600k for $230 or 5600x for $300?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 08:04 AM PST

I just got my Gigabyte 3070 and my 4790k is giving it's all, and I'm getting good fps and all, but my 4790k is definitely a bottleneck now.

Considering the 10600k as it's 6 core 12 thread, for a nice $70 cheaper than the 5600x(plus it's in stock)...

Can an rgb header cause a short?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 12:04 PM PST

Repost from another sub since nobody responded in 2 days since posting

So I built my pc a few months ago and I got some rgb fans with it. Everything worked perfectly until like 3 weeks ago where it wouldn't turn on. I built it out of the case and it booted up. But when I plugged the bottom rgb fan cable (the one with 2 pins a blank and then one pin) I noticed it had the same behavior that it did when I wasn't booting up.

So fast forward to now and the rgb on the fans will not work (happened somewhere between). I just tried to fix it but it's still not working. Also it's not just one group of 3 fans (they connect together to a splitter) but it's both. The small rgb accents on my motherboard work fine but the fans don't at all. Mind you they spin fine.

But here's the thing. I had the problem rgb connection plugged into a different header and I switched it to the one I had it on before. And guess what? It stopped working.

So my questions are how do I fix the rgb and why is the whole pc not turning on from one rgb header? I've never heard of a short or something from just an rgb header but can I happen?

    Thank you in advance!

Bought a used PC; can someone tell me what my CPU (AMD FX-6100 Six Core 3.30 GHz) is equivalent to for Intel chips?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 01:26 PM PST

    https://i.imgur.com/2oYp8CW.png https://i.imgur.com/i8rn2NQ.png

Bought my first PC that I will plan on upgrading, but I'm not sure if I will need to upgrade the CPU in the future. The GPU is definitely old for sure (Radeon 6800), and I looked it up on Tom's Hardware GPU hierarchy list to see where it ranks among other GPUs. The CPU says it's a six core 3.30 GHz, but to my understanding, Intel i3-7, none of them are six cores, just 2, 4, and 8.

    PC Crashes when Playing Games

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 12:19 AM PST

Good day guys I'm stumped and hoping the wisdom of reddit helps me out troubleshooting.

My PC, specs at the end, crashes randomly when playing some games CIV 6 and The Division 1/2 most recently. Initially i had though it was a Motherboard issue due booting issues and not detecting my GPU sometimes, got it RMAed by ASUS and was told it was working within specs (but did not want to test PCIE gen 4 for unknown reasons) once I received it still was still having issues. I bought a new motherboard to help the diagnostic process.

After Testing GPU in separate system and confirming it worked I looked at the CPU, I RMAed it and received a replacement thinking the issue would be fixed. Sadly this also didn't resolve the issue.

After all this I started thinking it was a power related issue due to now having to flip the PSU switch after my PC crashes, I started to think issue was with wiring in my home as it is very old and sometimes power is inconstant and I do now know the power tolerances of PC, so I had bought a UPS to assist. A few days after the UPS installation my PC has crashed again... This time I a grab a picture, but the jist is that RGB Ram was illuminated but nothing else was, and that I had to flip PSU switch to reboot.

Now I am looking back and feeling I have made no progress and spend over 100 Canadian Dollars shipping stuff for RMA with no fix in sight. I am currently investigating further, but any wisdom is welcomed. I am thinking it is a PSU or RAM, maybe?

    SPECS

CPU: AMD RYZEN 3700X usually (35-40C at idle, 60 under load)

GPU: Aorus Master RTX3080(40C at idle, 65 under load)

Old motherboard: Asus Tuf x570 Gaming

New motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Unify

    CPU COOLER: NZXT Kraken Z73

    RAM: G.Skill TridentZ 2 x 16GB (F4-360016D-32GTZRC)

PSU: Corsair RMX 850 with cable mod PRO MODFlex Cable extensions

Case: Lian li O11 Dynamic XL

UPS: CyberPower Intelligent 900W UPS Battery Backup with LCD (CP1500AVRLCD)

    Troubleshooting:

PSU: I already had 2 cables from PSU to GPU so I removed the cable extensions.

GPU: ran Furmark with GPU Z to see Perf cap and returned Vop and VRel, meanings limited by operating voltage and Voltage reliability respectively with a power consumption % of about 80% throughout(this was done without cable extensions).

RAM: downloading MEMtest86 to test my RAM (thanks PYRO266 never heard of that before)

    Edit1: added troubleshooting Flair

Edit 2: added Troubleshooting section and added things attempted, as well as added UPS being used, Thanks for all the help so far!

    Hi there, /r/buildapc community!

This list was made for my friend who wants a solid, powerful and long-lasting build. As you may guess the 1060 is a leftover and is going to be used until he is able to buy 3080 in a reasonable price. 11900 is considered a further possible upgrade. Do these parts make sense together in your opinion? Any feedback will be deeply appreciated.

Is GTS450 too old for MSI B550 Tomahawk?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 12:43 PM PST

I'm building a new PC which is gonna be mostly used through SSH and therefore a GPU is pretty useless for me. I have a very old but working PC that has an GTS450 inside so I had an idea to cheap out and use this GPU in my new PC. However when I boot up there's no video output and I hear a POST code - 1 long beep and 2 short beeps which as I've read suggests video memory problem. When I put the GPU back into the old PC it works just fine. Is it just too old for the B550 Tomahawk? Or does the problem lie elsewhere?

Outside cable management - from mess to clean(ish)

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 07:50 AM PST

    Hi all,

I got my new computer recently and I love it - also the looks of it. It's a beast! However I still had a very messy outside cable management, with all the computer, router, USB station, Orbi, Philips Hue... stuff being connected here. This is what it looked like before:

    The cable mess before

    And now, tadaaaa : Cleaner!

I am not really a "handyman" at all... I generally get along with my hands as on as there's a keyboard connected... so I'm proud of this (small) achievement and wanted to share it here! :-)

    Take care and stay safe!

Which one would be more bang for buck in 1440p? R7 3700x or R5 5600x?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 02:34 PM PST

Hello. Trying to put together a build that will last me 3 years. I'm really stuck on the CPU part on whether to go for 3700x or 5600x, In my country, 3700x would cost me $315 and 5600x will cost me $390. I saw some benchmarks but they were mostly done in 1080p where the 5600x just blew the 3700x out of the water, even in non-gaming applications.... Still, I kinda wanted to save my money hoping 1440p will even it out. But found this one benchmark where they included 1440p numbers and I'm particularly concerned about the RDR2 numbers because that's the game I wanted to play the most where the 5600x was getting like smooth 144 fps while the 3700x was getting like 125 fps, not great... But that's just one benchmark, I was hoping some of you guys have experience with 5600x and 3700x on 1440p so I could have some more insight on how often this happens even on higher resolution and whether I should save the money or go for the 5600x. Thanks for reading my post.

Upgrading my PC and selling my current build to a friend.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 02:23 PM PST

My friend is looking to build a modest gaming PC, and I offered to save him some money and work by selling him my current PC (minus the GPU) and spending a net ~$600 to build myself a new PC. I want to make sure that my new build is up to snuff, but I also want to make sure that I'm giving my friend a good deal.

    My new build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YhqVgt

I already have an RTX 2080 that will be going into this.

This build is for gaming and streaming. I mostly play Apex, and my current build gets anywhere from 100 to 144 fps (depending on how much shit is going on at once) on low-ish settings in 1440p while streaming at 1080/60. I've thought about buying a 240hz monitor, so it'd be nice if this build could handle ~190 fps while streaming Apex on low/1080 (I've read that Apex doesn't really handle framerates higher than that particularly well). Getting better performance in various single player games where I actually want the graphics cranked would be nice too, but this is less of a priority. I'm going a little over the top (for someone who mostly plays Apex) in the interest of future-proofing.

I don't want to spend much more than a net of $600-700. Buying in the US, hoping to mostly use Amazon (I know, Amazon sucks, so do most massive retailers) both for free/fast shipping and for that sweet sweet 5% back.

    Some notes on my choices:

    • 10700k vs 5600x is an ongoing debate in my head. On Amazon the 10700k is currently $40 cheaper, but much of what I've read suggests that the 5600x might handle single-computer streaming better. I'm also not sure what to trust as there seems to be a serious AMD fanboy problem on some of the PC subs, and I can't really tell what's just part of the circlejerk, what's part of the counterjerk, and what's real info. Would love some insight on this from someone who doesn't care about the Intel vs AMD rivalry. Currently leaning towards the 10700k as they seem comparable and $40 is $40.

    • Regardless of CPU, I don't really want to deal with water cooling, I've heard the Noctua NH-DH15 is the go-to for air cooling, but it's out of stock everywhere. The BQ! Dark Rock 4 seemed to be fairly well-regarded as well but I'm open to suggestions.

    • I never know exactly what to look for in a motherboard. I'm also a little confused, the MSI Z490 A-Pro listed on PCPP links to this, which is $240 and out of stock, but this has the same model number (and is the one I was planning to buy). Am I missing something?

    • I thought about looking for B-Die RAM but decided it probably wasn't worth it. This was the cheapest option that is 32GB 3600 C16 and is "designed for maximum compatibility and cutting-edge performance with the latest Intel Core processors." I'm guessing that just means it's easy to set up XMP?

    • I want a case with good airflow and at least one 5.25" bay for around $100. This led me to the Phanteks Enthoo Pro, which leaves me with several options, depending on whether I wanna go full or mid. Currently leaning towards this one. Only downside is that a midtower barely fits on my desk, so I think a full tower would have to go on the floor (tile, no pets atm).

    • Decided on the RMx 750 after perusing various PSU tier lists. Seems like a not super-expensive option that's still solid build quality. A little confusing because there's the RMx and the RMx (2018), the latter of which seems to be newer and maybe slightly better, and I think is the one I have on my list.

So that's my build, here's the build I'm selling to my friend: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/62VZvf

He's getting a used 1660 super from someone else so he's covered in the GPU department.

This computer has been used for just under 2 years, daily. I've never had any real issues with it, though my GPU runs a little hotter than I'd like (the 100r doesn't have the best airflow in the world, but this is likely also at least in part because the specific 2080 I have has some anecdotal evidence of poor QC when it comes to application of thermal paste). My friend is looking to use it for gaming, but he's a little bit less hardcore than I am, he may eventually get a 1440p/144hz monitor but I don't think he's looking to squeeze out frames for that extra edge. He'll likely be playing a lot of SP games + stuff like Battlefield and Apex, I think this build + a 1660S is going to serve him just fine. The real question is: How much is this build worth, two years used? Note that the mobo price doesn't show up on PCPP because it's out of stock, I think it was $80-100. So new, the build would be ~$700, I was thinking $450-550ish would be reasonable, but I wanna get some opinions from people not involved in the transaction.

    Thanks!
