    Simple Questions - November 12, 2019

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Building a pc, need confirmation that I’m not being stupid

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 01:21 PM PST

I am hoping to build my own pc, and have used pcpartpicker to make a setup. I have a mildly good understanding of what everything means but I'm not going to rely 100% on a website and find out it was wrong. If you could look at my build and tell me if everything's compatible and working well, I would really appreciate it. Feel free to also leave feedback and suggestions as well.

Crucial BX500 vs. MX500 as NON-operating system drive

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 12:56 PM PST

    Hello everyone

My question: Will I notice a realistic difference between Crucials BX500 SSD instead of the MX500 when using it to store games/office data (not the O.S.)?

The Background: I am currently configuring my upcoming PC build and still unconclusive about what storage to pick. My OS, as well as the most important programs used, will go onto an NVMe M.2 that is for sure. However, for "mass storage" I am still hesitant whether to get a Crucial BX500 or MX500. I am aware that the BX500 does not have a DRAM-Cache and is therefore not advised to buy as an OS-drive, but will it be noticable in every day use (aside from pure benchmarks) when I plan to fill it with games and office data only? Or should I still go for the MX500?

    Thank you for your advice

I'm helping my son build a new gaming pc and I'm wondering if the group and describe what a ballpark "good" component cost ratio would look like.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 12:23 PM PST

We're looking at an RTX 2080 ($700) with an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X which runs $370.

32 GB of RAM and a suitable power supply are ~$150 each. Motherboard and a 2 TB SSD are ~$300 each.

So right now we're looking at a total of around $2000 for the system. The ratio breaks out like:

    • 35% GPU
    • 20% CPU
    • 10% MB
    • 10% SSD
    • 7.5% Memory
    • 7.5% PSU

Does this seem like a reasonable distribution for components, or is that way too much GPU for not enough RAM or CPU?

I haven't built a PC since the early 2000's and I'm a little out of date with the newest generation of components. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA

Installed a new GPU today! ...but now my audio is all messed up?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 11:30 AM PST

installed a new gpu today, Sapphire rx580 4gb nitro+, to replace my GTX1050 for my Windows10 PC. And when I put on my headset, no audio comes out (only static noise) and my mic does not work anywhere. Literally my headset was plugged in the same way a day ago and worked fine. I don't get it, why would a GPU affect my audio?

My headset isn't old either and worked perfectly a day ago...

    Output

Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) Front Panel 3.5mm Jack

    • i tried plugging into the SL/SR Rear Panel 3.5mm Jack and got the same static noise.
    • i tried plugging into the Line In Rear Panel 3.5mm jack and got no sound.

    Input

    Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio)

    • i tried plugging into the Microphone Rear Panel 3.5mm jack and got no voicechat.

I go into Device Properties and try a test, but still hear the static... Sorry, don't know where to start and already frustrated.. let me know if there's anything additional I can share.

EDIT: here's a screenshot of my sound playback settings https://imgur.com/y32CwaV When I open a YouTube video, the green volume bar moves as normal, but no sound comes out to my headphones, just static...

First time learning, first time build: 1080p 144Hz Gaming

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 01:55 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

1080p 144hz gaming. Fortnite, league, overwatch, sc2, and so forth. And every so often, games like RDR2, cyberpunk, subnautica, skyrim, etc.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

144hz is a must. More than 60fps. Always had to play on a gaming laptop and on minimal settings and I'm tired of that and I want to play on higher fps on high settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

1500-1700 CAD. Lower the better, but quality and quality life improvement is what matters.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/nb7b8M

    • Ryzen 5 3600
    • Hyper 212 Black Edition
    • b450 Tomahawk MAX
    • Vulcan Z 2x8GB DDR4 - 3200
    • Sabrent Rocket 1TB m.2-2280 NVME SSD
    • 1660Ti
    • Metallic Gear Neo Air Mid Tower Case
    • Antec Earthwatts Gold Pro 550W 80+ Gold Cert Semi-modular
    • AOC C24G1 1920x1080 144Hz

Provide any additional details you wish below.

RAM: Going for just whatever is lowest price at time of buying. It's probably going to be the Corsair vengeance.

GPU: Does it matter which company I buy the 1660ti from? MSI? EVGA? Gigabyte? I'm thinking of EVGA as my friends really endorse them. Wondering if it's worth the extra 40 dollars at the moment.

Case: Neo Air is currently sold out so I'm probably going to go with the p350x if I don't see the Neo Air in the next 2 weeks.

Monitor: Has been the toughest one to research. I just want 144hz 1920x1080 that don't make my game look garbage but at the same time IPS is a little too expensive at the moment. Looking at the MAG 241C, C24G1, 2401, 2402, G2590FX. Budget for this is <$250. The C24G1 is currently on sale and so I'm likely to just go for that if ME will price match amazon for ~$210.

Peripherals I already got: SHP9500 + VMODA Boom mic, G502 Hero to complete the build. Awaiting to see if the ducky one 2 mini will go on sale.

Thanks for any and all replies.

Amd Wraith PRISM Cooler and My Motherboard

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 01:48 PM PST

Hi everybody. I purchased a MSI b450 gaming pro carbon ac because I was expecting to buy a ryzen 5 2600. I upgraded to the ryzen 7 2700x. ( It was 10 more dollars) my question is about the stock cooler. Should I use the stock cooler? I'm not planning to overclock. Should I plug in the usb or rgb header or both? What is it like installing the cooler? Sorry for all the questions I'm just nervous breaking the cooler or the motherboard by doing something wrong.

In what order should I do it?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 01:38 PM PST

Hey I'm planning on moving my OS (windows 10) from my SSD to my new SSD m2. I'm also buying new motherboard so I will have to move everything from my old mobo to the new one. In what order do I need to do it? I'm planning on making a completely new system by wiping it (aka formatting) becouse I don't need my data on my HDD and my old SSD.

Edit1: Are there any programs that can help me with it?

Radeon RX left a nasty taste in my mouth. Are AMD GPU's inherently troublesome?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 01:34 PM PST

First pc I had a dedicated gpu was a GTX630, later a GTX1050.. I recently thought about upgrading so I purchased a Sapphire RX580 4GB nitro plus after hearing many recommendations here on r/amd, r/buildapc, and r/buildmeapc. So, i installed it last night, and booted up today to test Overwatch after installing the latest drivers. Crashed within 5 minutes.

That's nothing major, just some troubleshooting... researched the issue on amd.com and on reddit.. made some changes that people were saying worked for them.. crashed again. and again. and again. (that's 4 times for those not counting) Ok, so the GTX GPU's were pretty much plug-and-play out of the box. Not only did the GPU crash my computer 4x, but it also appears to have un-configured my audio so now i only hear static from my headphones and my headphone microphone isn't picking up my voice...

so...is this nothing new when it comes to AMD GPUs? I've already opened a return ticket for the GPU and already shopping for a GTX1060..

Building a Budget gaming PC with my 7 year old

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 10:43 AM PST

Hey all so I planned on building a budget gaming PC with my 7 year old for around $450-500 built around either the Ryzen 1600 or 2400g but with Micro centers latest Black Friday deal I got the 2700x for $129.99. I figured I couldn't pass that up, but now am I in a predicament where the 2700x is to powerful for a cheap graphics card like the 1650 or AMD 570?the next step up on graphics seem to be a decent amount more in money. Can I get away with the lower end graphics card or would I be stupid not to at least get a 1660 or AMD 580? He mostly plays Minecraft and feed and grow your fish. Thanks.

Current pieces I have for build already: Ryzen 2700x Asrock B450M motherboard

You get 60€ cashback when you buy the mainboard + CPU, so I subtracted 60€ from the mainboard price.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I want to replace my old computer which contains a i5 3570k and appears to be the bottle neck in most newer games. I will keep my GTX 1060 + the power supply + SSDs / HDs.

Any suggestions before I pull the trigger? I decided to go with the 3700X because I want to keep the build for some time. I want to upgrade my graphics card in the future but for now it is doing fine.

Building a PC for a Christmas gift

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 11:29 AM PST

I put this together for a Christmas gift to my brother

Wondering if there's anywhere else to shave some money off, or areas that need to be better. He has my old peripherals and monitor (1980x1080 @ 60fps) which I'm sure he'll want to upgrade eventually so I didn't want to limit a gpu to being too low end.

Thanks for the time and help!

    2080 super vs 2080 ti

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:59 AM PST

I've recently built a PC with an i7 and a 2080 s but I'm always tempted to return the GPU and go for the 2080 ti. Would I see much of an increase in fps in games like tarkov and modern warfare?

Hello everyone this is my first time building a pc. I'd like to point out that I've already bought 2 parts and I'm currently thinking of buying a Msi gtx 1050 ti 4g($239 CAD) but I'm still not sure if it'll go well with the parts I currently have or another graphics card with a lower price that'll put perform the 1050 ti. My price range for a GPU would be $350, Help would be much appreciated thank you :)

    New Build Sanity Check

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 02:13 PM PST

    Hi Folks,

I'm helping my brother build a PC and have everything spec'd out but it I haven't stayed on top of the hardware market for the past few years so am looking for second opinions.

This PC will be used primarily for gaming. Looking to run high settings at 1440 in games like Battlefield and to build in a bit of futreproofing.

Budget for this build is in the $1500 ballpark ($2k CAD) excluding peripherals. I'm in Canada so getting parts shouldn't be an issue.

Here is the parts list I came up with:

So you're building a AAA title gaming PC with a 800-900 budget.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 11:58 AM PST

How much would you put towards the CPU, graphics card, and memory?

Also, do you have any recommendations as to what to look for at that price point?

Building a computer that can handle never closing any programs

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:47 AM PST

Hi all! I'm trying to build a computer that can handle having a crazy amount of windows open.

I'm a graduate student doing physics simulations and I'm usually working on a bunch of stuff at the same time, from writing new scripts to data analysis and looking up and reading papers.

I usually try to separate what I'm working on by using different workspaces on Ubuntu. But since I have a crap attention span I need to keep everything open at the same time. This means having multiple instances of some visualization software in different workspaces or having multiple jupyter notebooks open, multiple browsers and tabs, etc..

So I'm trying to build something that will allow me to do all that with no problem. I know that I'm going to need a lot of RAM, but is there something else I should be considering also?

Any input at all would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Thank you everyone for your responses. You've all been very helpful!

For those asking my budget is ~$1500 and somewhat flexible

    PC build for coding/gaming.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 01:15 PM PST

    Purpose
Coding and gaming. I use linux for coding and other work.

I'll be avoiding Nvidia as the AMD gfx drivers are open source which leads to less headaches. Probably make various upgrades later once parts becomes cheaper.

    Gaming performance requirements
1440p. 60+ fps. High/ultra graphics settings. I've already got two 30"/2560x1600/60hz monitors that refuse to die after about a decade. Eventually they will and I'll probably get two smaller 1440p/120hz monitors. Will only be single screen gaming.

    Budget
    Around 2K-3K AUD (1.3K-2K USD, 1.2-1.8K EUR).
