    Simple Questions - November 21, 2020

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

FPS Lower than expected, large framerate fluctuations with RTX 3080

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 03:03 PM PST

I just got my RTX 3080 in the mail (thank you Zotac!), but I'm having some issues with my framerates.

I'm experiencing large framerate variations in games that previously had none. For example, fluctuating between 220-380fps in CSGO, where I was previously pinned around 270 with my GTX 1070. I'm sure I'm going something wrong, I just need help identifying and solving. According to an LTT video I watched, I should be getting FPS in the 500s. I play in 1080p (yes, I know a 3080 is overkill for most people at 1080p but I prefer performance for competitive games).

    Setup:

MOBO: ASRock B450 Pro 4 (Set to correct BIOS for Ryzen 3800x)

CPU: Ryzen 3800x (Stock cooler, temps are fine)

RAM: 32GB TridentZ G Skill RGB 3200 (XMP Profile enabled, RAM set to 2977 due to instability at 3200)

PSU: Super Flower Leadex III Gold 850W

GPU: Zotac AMP Holo RTX 3080

I've done a clean install of my NVidia drivers, so I'm 99% sure that's not the issue, and my GPU is running between 60-70C, so I'm pretty sure it's not temperature related. I have no experience OCing, but not sure if that's the solution or not.

Any ideas? I'm feeling pretty lost at this point.

Can I put the CPU fan cable into the ring of the cooler? Is this totally stupid or ok, because it's perfect cable Management if this is ok. Pic: https://www.directupload.net/file/d/6009/bgkyebxn_jpg.htm

10700k vs 5600x which cpu would be better for value, future proofing, and gaming.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 11:36 PM PST

Which one should I get? I am struggling so hard right now. I am trying to upgrade from an fx 8320 and its been so laggy. which one would be better? My main use would just be gaming and having a lot of stuff open in the background (chrome, spotify, discord, steam, etc).

the only thing I would be comparing would be ram cpu and motherboard since I would use the same parts for all the other components.

Intel build- i7 10700k with gigabyte z490 vision G and 16 (8x2) t force dark pro 3466 cl 16 which would cost about $605 for me with tax.

AMD build- R5 5600x with msi b550 gamign edge wifi and 32gb (8x4) t force dark pro 3466 which would cost around $665 with tax.

-They would both be about the same price if I do not get the extra 16 gb ram for the amd build but I heard having all slots populated in ryzen 5000 yields better performance.

The intel is available right now and amd can be a pain to find but if its better I am willing to wait a little.

    Dog Knocked PC Over. Help!

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 04:45 PM PST

I don't know if this is the right sub to post this in, but I could use the advice of people who know all about pc parts. For reference, this is a self built pc.

So I had my wired headphones on and my dog got his paw tangled in it somehow. He freaked out and yanked everything down. The PC sits on my desk and fell onto its side (not the glass panel, but the solid one). Thankfully it didn't fall to the floor, but it was still a big impact. Everything was plugged in and on when it fell. It didn't shut off when it fell or when I stood it back up. It seems to be running fine and there's no new noises.

How do I check for damage? What could be damaged? What should I look out for?

Also, definitely investing in wireless headphones this Christmas.

CPU heatsink not making good contact -- 50C+ idle, shutdown on stress-test

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 01:40 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

Part in question: Ryzen 5 3600x with stock Spire cooler.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Looking at my temps in both the BIOS and Windows (HWmonitor), the CPU temps wildly fluctuate between 50-60C (under no load), then under load I get very quick shutdowns.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I've taken the CPU off once to try to re-seat it, but the same thing happened. Not sure how to get it to seat evenly. When I pulled it off, it looked like some of the pre-applied paste hadn't even touched the CPU (clean part on the CPU).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This is my first time doing an AMD heatsink. The heatsinks that come with Intel processors have been no problem at all, but this one is giving me problems. Worried I'll have to apply new paste, which I don't have, so it'll take another better part of a week to have a machine to work on. Is there some technique I'm not using for applying the heatsink? I try to screw all four corners down evenly but it's not working for me.

    Small updates:

    • Installing Steam takes it up to about 65-70C. Clearly something is wrong.

PC won't make it to POST and turns off after VGA light on MOBO

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 01:43 PM PST

Components (all purchased and installed at the end of March, except for the power supply):

    • AMD Ryzen 5 3400G
    • Gigabyte B450 AORUS M AM4 Micro ATX
    • Crucial Ballistix 16GB DDR4 2666 MHz UDIMM Gaming Desktop Memory Kit (2 x 8GB, White)
    • EVGA - W3 Series 450W ATX 12V/EPS 12V 80 Plus Power Supply - White (new...initially had a 350W generic power supply)
    • OS - Windows 10 (should be 20H2)

Computer was operating fine the other day, but after I set it to hibernate I came back to a restart loop where it would power up momentarily then shut down (repeat ad nauseum). Pulled the power plug. Thought that it might be an issue with the power supply (since it was 7 years old), so purchased the EVGA and installed. Would power up for ~1 second then shut down.

Pulled all of the components out of the case onto a non-conductive surface to troubleshoot

    • No RAM, just CPU - CPU status light lights up, then DRAM lights up for ~5 seconds, then it moves back to CPU status light remaining on. Fan in low speed
    • RAM added:
      • Each stick tried individually in all slots - same as above, except the fan spins up to a higher speed with the DRAM light on, and after DRAM light turns off the VGA light flashes for a fraction of a second before power down
      • Both sticks tried together in slots 1/2 or 3/4 - Fan spins up to higher speed when DRAM light is on, but VGA light does not turn on before power down.

Thoughts? Did the GPU portion of the APU die, or is this something else. I don't have a discrete GPU to test with (although I am asking around to borrow one).

How important is matching latency when adding ram?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 08:55 AM PST

Technically not a PC-building situation, but I think it's relevant enough to the knowledge base here.

I just ordered a laptop, and the specs mention a soldered-on 8gb 3200mhz ram, plus an extra slot to add more. Of course I'm going to match the clockspeed, but I can't find any info about the latencies online or via support. Is there a way to check those values when the computer arrives? As far as I can tell, it's usually not printed on the label. Does it even matter?

Can you interchange PSU cables from the same/different brand of different power ratings?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 05:04 PM PST

Scenario right now: Looking at a Corsair RM650x with a 3070. Also this is assuming all PSU involved are fully modular.

Scenario in say 2-3 years: Put in a more power hungry GPU that requires 850w PSU. Pick a Corsair RM850x.

Would it just be a case of removing the 650 cabling from the back of the PSU (since it's fully modular), taking it out of the case and then just reattaching those cables to the 850w once installed?

    Coil whine

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 02:50 PM PST

Hi everyone, I have a gpu (rtx 2070 super) with coil whine (it WAS not that bad). I could play with 144fps and not that much noise but after I installed an m2 ssd the whine noise increased. I changed the ssd to the other m2 slot and still same. Why did the coil whine increase after installing m2 and is there anything I can do to decrease the noise ?

Building a new pc Ryzen 5 3600 with RTX 2060, looking for advice

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 02:49 PM PST

    Hello,

so I'm kinda new to building pcs.

I build the pc on the partpicker page : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BydZcT

I'm from EU (Croatia), and in my local store all the parts are approximately 1.113,27$

I don't really know which motherboard or psu to pick, dont know how much money is worth putting into it.

I don't wanna go too high with the price maybe like 50$ more. Any suggestions are well appreciated.

Building a new PC this black friday and want to make sure my parts are good!

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 04:47 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mainly gaming, games like GTAV, apex legends, Dead by Daylight, League

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Have a 144Hz monitor at 1080p. Looking to hit that 144fps threshold for competitive games and 60-70+ on harder to run games at high settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    ~$900 CAD

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/YsxJnL

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I am using my old GTX 1070! So that is why it is not present in the build.

Build feedback ~$2500 ( no RGB / no OC )

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 04:45 PM PST

Hello buildapc community, I would need some feedback on that new rig I'm building, current one is pretty old ~10y/o ( i5 750 / GTX 760 / M4 128GB ). Some info:

    • I plan to play in 1440p / 144hz ( still looking for a good monitor )
    • I do other things like coding, video encoding, hence the expensive CPU + 32GB
    • I don't care about RGB or overclocking or aesthetic in general
    • I don't need wifi
    • I live in Canada

Things I'm not sure about the build:

    • Mobo seem expensive nowdays
    • RAM, is it good enough for the CPU in term of timings / speed?
    • The case, I don't want an expensive one but I'm looking at a good balance between noise / airflow

    rtx 3060/3060ti + i5 10400f 1440p gaming - Will it hold well until DDR5?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 04:45 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm on an old i5 4690 CPU and I'm wondering - do you think this build is gonna hold out well until DDR5 (I expect it to be somehow of a standard or at least worth an upgrade in 2023?) That's when I plan on making my next upgrade... I'm planning to buy an i5 10400f now and a b460 board with 2666mhz memory.

I have a 1440p monitor with OC freesync range 42 - 75hz, so I wouldn't mind playing on 50 - 60 fps, but would prefer to have my settings on high or at least medium ( no need for ultra)
