    Simple Questions - September 24, 2020

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

A note from Nvidia on the 12 pin adapter:

There have been some conversations around the little disclaimer that comes with the 30-series GPUs. It states that the GPU might not be powered on properly if you use a 3rd party vendor connector, and we recommend to use only our connector that comes with the GPU. We need to update this with the message below.

12-pin Adapter Availability For power connector adapters, we recommend you use the 12-pin dongle that already comes with the RTX 3080 GPU. However, there will also be excellent modular power cables that connect directly to the system power supply available from other vendors, including Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, and CableMod. Please contact them for pricing and additional product details

Today I finally built my VERY FIRST gaming pc and I couldn't be happier!

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 09:09 AM PDT

After years of not being able to save up enough money, and with the help of my mother(god bless her soul) I finally managed to build my very fist pc!

I come from a very poor family and me and my mother have struggled when my father passed a couple of years back. After getting out of uni this year I was able to get a better job and save up enough money to buy a decent pc I wanted my entire life. Granted it's not anything spectacular but it can run most things.

Edit: for those asking for the specs

    CPU: RYZEN 5 2600

    /

    RAM: 16GB

    /

    Storage: 1TB(HDD)+240GB(SSD)

    /

    GPU: GeForce GTX1660Ti

    RTX 3080 - 4k or 1440p Ultrawide

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 07:07 AM PDT

Getting straight to it, the majority of the games I play are single player. I almost never play fps'. Which monitor do you think would be the best for someone like me who is hoping to nab a 3080 if they ever go back in stock. 2160p or 1440p ultrawide.

Edit: For some more clarity, the games I've really enjoyed playing these past 2 years are:

All of the Assassin's Creed games, arkham trilogy, Just Cause 3, Far Cry 3&4, Shadow of Mordor, Tomb Raider 1&2, Saints Row 3&4.

A not so detailed guide to building a PC

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 06:57 PM PDT

Do you want to build a PC, but you don't want building PCs to become a hobby? Are you intimidated by the long essays on this subreddit explaining every single PC part in great detail? Do you feel that you don't have the time or energy to learn everything you need to to build a PC, and now you're thinking you'll just get a prebuilt instead? Well then this is the guide for you! This guide will tell you how to find a parts list with no compatibility issues that will satisfy your needs while staying within your budget without spending too much time becoming an expert on PC building in the process.

    Step 1:

Figure out what you want to use the PC for and figure out your budget. Don't forget to include your monitor in your budget. You don't want to spend $1000+ on a PC only to realize you need to spend another $250+ on a monitor to actually be able to use your PC properly.

    Step 2:

Take that information you just figured out, and bring it on over to r/buildapcforme and make a post. They have a copyable template to help you format it correctly. Then just wait for some kind soul to give you the parts list for your build

    Step 3:

Take your shiny new parts list, and make a post on this subreddit asking people to check it and suggest modifications. Usually your build will be fine already, but sometimes you'll find a useful tip here that might boost performance or save you some money.

    Step 4:

Your parts list should be good now. Just order the parts and build it. Find a good guide on YouTube. It's much easier to figure out what you need to do after watching someone else do it. You may need to look up other, quicker guides for individual parts if it's not covered by the main video you found for the PC as a whole.

    Step 5:

Congratulations! You just built a PC. And, you got the best performance for price and you didn't need to become an expert on all things PC to do it.

Hopefully this helps anyone who is getting intimidated by all the super long guides and explanations on this subreddit that are full of fancy words and terms that you don't understand. You don't need to understand every aspect of your PC to build it. You just need internet access and knowledge of the basic function of each part.

Note: This is not a bashing of the long, detailed posts. I think those posts are great and a lot of people can benefit greatly from them. I have the utmost respect for the people that not only know all those things, but decide to take the time to write it all down for everyone else. This guide is aimed at busy people who might not have the time to put in hours of research into their decisions, and others who don't want to do the research for various reasons.

Is getting the 3070 gonna be even possible?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 09:11 AM PDT

The 3080 sold in 3 minuets, and the 3090 sold before most people could even click the buy button, how hard is it going to be to get the 3070 because it has a high demand?

    PC for mom

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 01:10 PM PDT

    Please no mom jokes ^

Just asking if this build somehow makes sense, PC will be mostly used for office works, some occasional basic photo editing. Multi-tasking is needed so rather invest in the CPU/RAM/Mainboard combination in comparison to the graphics card.

    PC Part Picker List

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor - 178.90€
    • Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard - 114.80€
    • Memory: G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory - 48.00€
    • Storage: Crucial MX500 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive - 46.90€
    • GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 550 - 512 4 GB PULSE Video Card - 79.43€
    • Case: be quiet! Pure Base 500 ATX Mid Tower Case - 65.92€
    • Power Supply: be quiet! Pure Power 11 400 W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply - 48.00€

Since I am based in Germany, I can get the be quiet! things quite cheap. The whole setup according to some price comparison site would be around 580€ (~680 USD). Anything you would replace or does it seem fine?

    Hey all,

I'm in the process of getting my first PC dedicated to design, simulation and video editing. I'll be honest, I'm nervous about the planning stage much more than the building stage as I've build a couple PCs for friends before. I've been wanting a threadripper build for as long as I can remember and I think I am ready to jump the gun.

I have used previously recommended information for storage devices and think I've got a good choice there yet I am worried I won't have the right cooler etc. If anyone has any recommendations, I'd love to here them and I would really appreciate it.

    Thank you

    Upgraded from i3 550 to i5 655k

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 08:08 AM PDT

I know these are older parts

Motherboard base model is a Dell OEM. Im noticing that when I installed the new cpu I have a steady amber light on the motherboard as well as 4 beeps. I've checked out the memory and all seem to be installed correctly and securely, even reinstalled. I tried booting with just one stick of memory in same error.

Anyone know what I could check? CPU is installed properly and no pins are bent. At this point the next thing to consider is to start fresh by disassembling everything and rebuilding. I'm considering doing a bios update but not sure if that's necessary

Brand new PSU killed GPU. I need advice

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 02:43 PM PDT

Honestly sick of my life right now.

So i upgraded from a Corsair RM650x to an RM850x in preparation for my 3080 when it arrives.

At first I noticed a really strong weird smell coming from the unit. I figured this might wear off with it being new but I've never had a PSU smell this srrong and this bad before.

I was getting game crashes, and when I got a full system crash I took the decision to go back to my 650x. When I changed back, the GPU would no longer do anything. It's a Strix 2070S. Normally the fans go to 100% for a second when i power the system on, and the RGB glows red. Nothing. No fan spin. No RGB. Just 2 white lights next to the PCI power cables. I installed my old working 970, and it spun the fans to 100% for a few seconds but i made the decision to turn the system off because this seemed very wrong.

In terms of warranty, where do I stand? I'm sure getting a new PSU will be simple but what about my graphics card? Will corsair replace it? Its still in warranty too. Could my motherboard be damaged too?

Now, the system still boots. There is no video output but the system will boot. So its not failing POST. I know because if I wait 30 seconds then type my pin, I can see my iCUE RGB profiles load.

I've not been able to speak to Corsair or the retailer Scan yet. Its 11pm. I'm just panicking. I need this system operational ASAP. I have work to do.

Thoughts on my around 900 USD build. First time builder and could really use a second opinion on the parts.

So im in the process of finding the parts for my first gaming pc. As it is my first time building i could really use some feedback on the parts i have chosen. If anyone has any suggestions to other parts, amazon.de would probably be the place i would buy it (if you know another retailer within EU feel free to share)

I've also been warned some people have had this motherboard DOA and im just curiouse if the power supply is good enough. Thanks!

Simple, likely stupid question regarding multi-8-pin GPUs and 'split' cables that come with modular PSUs; can one cable connect to two 8-pins?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 04:04 AM PDT

Hope the title goes to some length to get my point across, but some clarification info:

I have a Corsair RM850 modular power supply. It has a bunch of 6+2 PCIE slots. It came with a few PCIE power cables that slot into the PSU at one end, then at the other end there's a 6 pin connector with a 2 pin offshoot, and coming off the six pin part there's another 6-and-2 set.

I've preordered a Rog Strix 3080 OC from Overclockers which has 3 8-pin inputs. So here's the stupid question that I want to ask just in case: can the second 6-and-2 set from my modular PSU, that's running off the first six, go into one of these, or is it meant for powering something else that consumes less power?

In other words, will I have to run three PCIEs from my PSU because I'm only meant to use the 'primary' set for GPUs, or can I connect the offshoot and only need to run a second one, which will have a hanger-on?

How is the Samsung 970 evo?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 06:34 AM PDT

So I was saving up money to get an SSD and I was gonna go with a WD blue 1 TB but yesterday my hard drive got corrupted from a windows 10 update so it's gonna cost all the money I had saved for that SSD to fix. With that in mind I think it would be smart to wait until Christmas to get a better SSD and I've heard people say the 970 evo Is good. I want to use it for windows 10 and gaming. I talked to a guy yesterday that said there was a way that I can dual run Linux and windows 10 without using a virtual machine so if I upgrade my RAM I might do that too. Compared to the WD blue how is the 970 evo. I've never used an SSD before so I'm guessing I'd be able to tell a difference no matter which one I get but is the 970 worth the extra money? Also, my motherboard dosent have a heat sync for the m.2 slot so is there a good heatsync anyone would recommend?

    Motherboard for a Ryzen 3600x?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 10:43 AM PDT

I was looking for a new CPU to upgrade from an i5 6500. Between an i5 10600k ($299), Ryzen 7 3700x ($299) and a Ryzen 3600x ($220), I went for the last one due to it being cheaper while still being a powerful CPU. Also with that extra money I can buy a new Motherboard for it since the one I currently have isn't compatible. I was gonna go for the i5 but the Mobos that can work for it are pretty expensive right now.

With that out of the way, what would be a decent Motherboard that can go for it? The ones I found are:

    MSI Tomahawk B450 Max ($125)

Asus ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming ($130)

MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max ($110)

    Any help would be appreciated.

EPYC build for ERP software running on MS SQL (or would Ryzen be enough?)

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 04:48 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm trying build a server for our new ERP system. It runs on Win Server, MS SQL 2012 Std and SAP.SQL. We are a small business and there will be ~ 20 users connected at the same time. MS SQL is going to be licensed to two cores. Size of the database is about 10 GB. So far I've come up with:

    • EPYC 7262 8/16 cores (according to this article)
    • 32GB RAM (4x8GB)
    • 2x250GB SSD SATA-3 (RAID 1) for operating system
    • 2x240GB SSD PCI-E/NVMe HHHL cards (RAID 1) for database
    • Supermicro motherboard

I'm not very familiar with server hardware, so I could use some help with questions that came up.

    1) As you have probably noticed, our database is small and 20 users isn't that many. Hence the first question that came up was - Is EPYC even required? Wouldn't Ryzen 3900X be enough? It has even higher clocks. And we don't need any specific hardware functionalities or security solutions that come with server hardware.

1.1) Does anyone have any information about Ryzen performance on MS SQL? I couldn't find any.

    2) Is hardware RAID controller better than a software solution for SATA SSDs and PCI-E/NVMe SSDs? For instance, someone here said that "Software RAID is the higher-performance option with NVMe. Two of them are FASTER than any single (RAID) controller card is."

2.1) Will OS boot from 2x SSD SATA software RAID 1 drive? According to this it is not possible. Has something changed in this topic? Here for instance, they managed to boot an OS from software RAID.

    3) Is it even possible to make a RAID 1 out of two PCI-E/NVMe HHHL SSD cards? Maybe a better solution would be 2x M2s 2280? However the Supermicro motherboard that I was looking at, has only one M2 port. Therefore a PCI card with 2xM2 ports would be required, is that correct?

Can anyone chime in and see if there is anything wrong with this setup?

I've heard that ram doesn't affect pc speed but my game is very stuttery and I noticed my cpu and gpu were running at like 50% but my memory was at 90-95% while I was playing. That used to happen when I played warzone too. Would getting more ram fix it. I have 8gbs and I was thinking about getting 16 or 32

The School pc is better than my current pc

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 12:08 PM PDT

This isn't really something that fits into this sub but I would like to share my story

So basically our class teacher was in search for a computer room to do research and it just happend to be that this room was clear without any other students. We were all greeted with some new flat screens and windows 10, which is nice as all other pcs had windows 7. But I got curious about the computer, it just looked normal from the outside, just a normal Fujitsu case. So I open the system information and I get greeted with 16 gigabites of ram and an Intel i5 9500. Which of course allot of school would have even better stuff like a real gpu instead of intergrated graphics but like keep in mind this thing can run GTA 5 on almost constant 30 fps. But the question is why, why would you upgrade just one room with such high specs for just having a word document and a few chrome tabs open and it isn't like my school has got money to spare... It also baffles me how my first pc I build in January an Ryzen 2700x gets beaten by a school pc..

Thanks for reading this meaningless post :)

Cases without a side glass/acrylic panel?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 01:33 PM PDT

My Buddy was just telling me that because he is just buying for performance and not looks (clashing color schemes) that he'd like to find a PC case that is a solid panel rather than glass or acrylic. I assume that his budget would be around the $100 mark. Do you guys have any suggestions?
