This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

How To Clean a Smokers PC?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:53 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Recently some bastard, (who's very dumb), retook smoking back up.

He's going to quit again, but he's also noticed there is about a three month buildup of some sticky dust on his fans and GPU fans.

It's by no means critical, but the ole pressure air won't budge it. I can use cotton buds, but it's fairly tedious going.

I'm wondering if it's safe to use wet wipes or something similar only on the fan blades themselves? Also open to other suggestions?!

Also, probably a general reminder of how important it is to not smoke around your important things, as it cakes on very quickly and very grossly!

    Thanks!

Worth the upgrade from an i5 8600k to an i9 9900k?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 05:34 AM PDT

So this is actually for my friend but they're planning on upgrading to an rtx 3080 and gaming at higher resolution and running higher settings(probably 1440p or 4K). Currently they're running a z390 board and wanna get an i9. They're on sale at a local store for $360. Not sure if it's worth the upgrade. Any thoughts?? He claims to be maxing out the i5 load just gaming.

Purchasing a 3080, worth waiting for the AMD 4000 series?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 05:31 AM PDT

I have a 6 year old rig with a 4790K that is woefully unprepared for me to slam a 3080 into it. I was looking at a full upgrade and saw that the AMD 4000 series will be revealed October 8th. Is it worth it to try to struggle through with the setup I have and get a 4000 series chip rather than buying a 3000 series chip now? I've never bought right on the edge of a new gen so I'm not familiar with any pitfalls.

Looking for gaming chair options (lower back pain)

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:37 AM PDT

Hey! I have been using a Hyken staples office chair for the past 5 years and the last few months I stood up and touched my lower back in a normal kinda of stretching way and noticed it was completely numb. I'm worried that this chair aint what it used to be.

I am willing to spend serious cash for a nice chair because my health is Important. $500 but not $1,000

Let me cover some important details first. I am 5-10" 160lbs

I use my computer a lot since I game and work from home -_-

I worry about back pain specifically lower back pain.

Buying a chair online and putting it together only to find out it sucks and having to ship it back sounds like a chore I am hoping to avoid.

Can you cool your face by putting a cpu cooler on it, theoretically?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:41 AM PDT

This is going to sound like a troll but it isn't. Genuine question.

If you apply thermal paste to the bottom of a cpu cooler and stick it to your cheek, can't you technically yoink the heat off your face? It is probably dangerous but technically possible in extreme circumstances?

    RTX 3080 build

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 03:59 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

the wait is finally over, I'm about to order the parts for my new build! In this build i will use the new RTX 3080 GPU.

Before that I would like to get another opinion on my chosen parts for this price range: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/yK78Wb

Initially I was going with the amd 3700x CPU.

After looking at some benchmarks and a lot of discussions with a friend I changed that to the 10700k from intel because this PC will almost exclusively used for gaming at 1440p/144hz in all sorts of games, where I expect the intel CPU to shine.

So, what do you guys think?

The GPU in the PCPP list is just a placeholder for the 3080.

    Thank you!!

Video on RTX 3080 power efficiency vs flagship cards since 2013

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:31 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I made a Youtube video about performance and power efficiency between Nvidia flagship cards since the GTX 780 until the RTX 3080. I thought I'd post it here for anyone planning on doing/modifying a build!

TLDR: - RTX 3080 is 87% faster, 26% more power efficient than RTX 2080 - RTX 3080 is 30% faster, 1.6% more power efficient than RTX 2080 Ti

What are you thoughts on that? Cheers!

Cat knocked my girlfriend’s tea onto her PC

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:07 AM PDT

This is a success story about a PC repair that happened a few months ago. I saw a post about spilling Pepsi on a new build and thought this might be helpful to some people.

My girlfriend keeps her tower beside her desk. Her cat jumped up and decided to knock her sweet tea off the desk, right over the tower; spilled about 32oz onto her running system, right through the top case fans. It was ugly. I at least a few people here can relate.

She immediately powered it down and told me what happened. Honestly I think she was extremely lucky it didn't kill the pc on the spot. I took everything apart (chassis, power supply, GPU, and cleaned it all with alcohol (using a static wrist strap.) I am NOT advocating that anyone open up their power supply. It's not a safe thing to do if you don't know what you're doing.

But after cleaning the system, reassembling everything, and a healthy dose of luck, it powered on, posted, and booted just fine. I haven't seen any lingering negative effects from the spill either.

TLDR; if you spill something on your system, it's not necessarily dead. Power it down, take it apart, and clean it thoroughly the CORRECT way, or have someone who is skilled/certified do it for you. You might get lucky.

    Asus TUF Gaming VG289Q, 28" at 4k with 120hz for $330?

I just came across this monitor. Price seems low for 4k @ 120hz. What am I missing here?

I've read 4k is bad at 28". Also has a 5ms response time but not a deal breaker? What am I missing?

Is my crappy old hard disk making my new build slow?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 07:06 AM PDT

    Ryzen 2600x

    16Gb DDR4 RAM

GeForce GTS 250 (temporary, until I get a new fancy one)

HD is a 750Gb 5000rpm Seagate one, it's pretty old - maybe as old as 2013.

Windows is slow as treacle, and in Task Manager, the disk column is red and 100% most of the time. Even opening Edge to browse the web and download Steam leads to a big empty white square while it renders the window.

I need help with my upgrade..

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:04 AM PDT

    Hi guys!

Like 3 or 4 years back i bought my budget computer.. Been working pretty fine, except my CPU, is just totally garbage.. While playing any game, im whole time at 100% usage.. Im using i5-6400, 4 core. And my GPU is most of the time chilling at the 60%. So i want to upgrade my cpu.. I have old 1151 socket MB, that supports max 8th. gen CPU. So it wouldnt be any big upgrade. So i said, i will go all in and buy new motherboard and cpu.. I really like i7-10700. But if i buy i7-10700, i cant have my 1050ti.. So i want to buy the new 3070. Because for 500 dollars, im getting more performance then 2080ti.. At least what we can see from NVidia benchmarks. So i would like to know, if this upgraded setup will actually work.. I would say most parts are okay. But im not sure how powerfull Power Supply i will need. And after i do these upgrades, i would buy some 2933Mhz ram. I will be really grateful for any advice.. Here is the list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/mxve/saved/#view=TMcGLk

Can you take an SSD out of your current rig and put it into a new one?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:09 PM PDT

Without going into too much unnecessary detail, my current rig is very old and outdated by current standards (beside the ssd, the newest component in my system is my beautiful GeForce 970) and while I'm going to be patient and wait for the new NVIDIA and AMD components to release before I start purchasing parts, I was wondering if it'd be possible to take the ssd that's currently in my system and use it in the new one I'm planning on building.

The ssd is an 860 Evo 1tb SATA in case that's relevant

Assuming I'm sticking to my budget, is it better to buy all of my PC parts in bulk or over time? Why?

    How screwed am I?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:21 AM PDT

Hello people! Was playing some R6S with a friend when my PC made a popping sound and shut off. Based on the information here, it appears that the PSU is done for and potentially the motherboard. I'll be able to take it to a shop on Monday since they're closed on the weekends but I'm semi-panicking currently about how many parts I'll have to replace.

    Specs are: CoolerMaster RS-700-ACAB-B1

    Asus TUF B450M-PRO GAMING mATX

    Ryzen 5 3600

    Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 3200MHz CL16 2x8

    GeForce RTX 2060 Super GAMING OC 3X 8GB GDDR6

    Samsung 1TB 860 QVO, 2.5" SSD, SATA III, MLC, 550/520 MB/S

I've used this build for approximately 6ish months. Previously had a 1060 GTX from which upgraded to the 2060S.

Cheers in advance and pray for me lmao.

I figured out one big way to determine whether you have a defective/inefficient PSU or GPU

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 09:55 AM PDT

As the title above says, I came to this sub 2 days ago with this issue.

After doing a ton of trial and error, I came to the realization that the reason my GPU wouldn't crash during GPU stress tests but would crash during certain games was because of how much Power my CPU was using during each. When running a stress test on my GPU with furmark my CPU was not really being utilized so my PC would be fine. However, when playing a game like Apex Legends that put my CPU under a load there wasn't enough power going to my system and it was causing crashes. Upgrading my PSU ended up being the answer to solving my dilemma.

Not really sure what the moral of the story would be here, but thought my experience night be helpful for people looking to upgrade to power hungry 3000 series cards soon:)

My pc randomly restarts without warning - ive installed a program to measure temps, are these temps bad?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 06:37 AM PDT

My pc has restarting randomly the past month. Every 2-3 days, and sometimes two days straight. My ram temperature seems abnormally high at max (200)? Is this what is causing the restart? Or my CPU which is over 80 degrees C.

    https://imgur.com/a/F47onqQ

Edit: Using two other programs to monitor my temps, they say my temps are 30c rn in idle, while cpuid hardware monitor says 78 https://imgur.com/a/nkqmWBQ. I opened my case for better airflow for now, and the air is way fresher and cooler now. Im not sure if overheating is the problem anymore but ill for sure look into reapplying thermal paste since i did accidently touch it bit w my nails when i installed my cooler, however my friend said it was okay.

Im currently using one stick ram to see if its faulty ram causing my restarts. Ive already tested the other one, and it still restarted, hopefully this ram works and i can temporarily use one stick 8 gb ram until i replace the ram if thats the issue..

Installed new RAM and it won't turn on

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 02:45 PM PDT

Hello guys, I had 2x4gb 1600mhz DDR3 installed and bought another 2x4gb 1600mhz DDR3, both HyperX, the old ones were working perfectly beforehand, when I installed, the PC would turn on for 1 second and turn off, repeatedly, so I tried only with the new ones and it worked, now, when I try with just the old ones, same or different slots, it doesn't boot, but stays on with the DRAM Led solid red.

I entered the BIOS with the new ones and turned the DRAM config to automatic, any more help?

Can I leave a desktop setup in my car for 4 days?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:39 AM PDT

I need to travel for military training tomorrow. I won't have a place to store my computer for the first 4 days. It will be about 65-73 F outside for the 4 days. I either have to bring it up and leave it in my car for 4 days, or go a whole month without it, which is the first time I can come home for a weekend. My car has a black interior with leather seats. Will this damage my PC components?

Note: Robbery is not an issue; I am purely concerned about the effects of the temperature on my PC.
