    Simple Questions - July 15, 2020

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

The rather disappointing spider infestation update.

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 07:10 PM PDT

    Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/hqxm9y/i_believe_there_is_some_kind_of_spider_nest_in_my/

Welp. I brought the PC out in the garage on a table and gave it a thorough inspection. I was actually expecting a hundred of those fucks to pour out of the case when I opened up the back panel, but I found absolutely nothing. Not even a carcass or a cobweb. This did give me the opportunity to do a deep half hour long cleaning and dusting of my PC, but it also led to me realizing that I desperately need a new case, as this thing is quite possibly the most un-intuitive piece of garbage I have ever had to deal with. (compared to the other PC I built, my brother's.) My dad did find another dead spider underneath the PC after I moved it, but it was brown so I assume it was the one my cat killed.

so yeah, sorry that there wasn't a huge infestation or anything, at least the PC is hyper-clean now, and I even took some time to fix a cable management issue.

edit: there's a tiny hole in the corner of the wall near there as well. I doubt they could fit through it but who knows, that's probably where they're coming from. Why they chose my room and to all climb up the same wall in the same direction is a complete mystery to me.

Looking for a ~$200 1080p/144hz/1ms gaming monitor, suggestions?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 10:35 AM PDT

As the title suggests, I'm in the market for a 1080p/144hz/1ms monitor that is somewhere in the ~$200 or so range (willing to go to $250 or so if need be). Ideal screen size is 24-25" since it will be on a somewhat smaller desk. The inclusion of speakers is not very important, I have a nice Logitech 3 piece set already.

The current plan is to use it with my PS4 for a year or two until I build a desktop PC (I know the PS4 is only 1080p 60hz, bear with me for a second). The idea here is to buy the monitor for my future PC setup and use it with my PS4 in the meantime instead of buying a 60hz monitor now and a 144hz monitor later.

Why don't I just build the PC now you might ask? I'm still in college and building a desktop isn't too feasible both money wise and space wise.

My future PC will most likely run on a Ryzen chip with NVIDIA graphics if that impacts the outcome of your recommendation at all. I've been doing some research and have seen some monitors that fit my needs from brands like Sceptre and BenQ but I know those have a lot of QC issues so I don't have a ton of faith in those.

If you need any more information, let me know! Thanks in advance.

I'll be jumping on this deal with the 3900x.

Looking to upgrade my current pc. Getting cpu, ram, mobo.

My main concern is the RAM. Is that going to have any compatibility issues, or is there a better option? any advice or opinions will be helpful. Thank you!

    A lesson in troubleshooting

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 12:36 PM PDT

A couple of days ago I was excited to pick up my shiny new (second hand) Vega 64, as it had been years since I'd upgraded my GPU. I got home, connected everything up and it seemed to work okay, for a minute and then... black screen, fans screaming at 100%. Shit.

At this point my excitement was slightly lessened. I rebooted, and it crashed again. So over the course of the next few hours I got more annoyed and tried a multitude of different things to attempt to fix the problem. I found many threads online describing similar problems, and tried out suggestions such as:

    • Using separate PCIE cables (not daisy-chained)
    • Using new PCIE cables
    • Checking PCIE cables were plugged in properly
    • Checked GPU was seated properly

Then I went down a long rabbit hole that suggested it might be due to an old PSU, or single vs. multiple PSU rails... so I dug out my Corsair Link dongle for my AX1200i. It was indeed in multi rail mode (and I would've been surprised if that was the problem anyway - I ran 3x R9 290X off that thing).

The next rabbit hole was regarding the voltage / power states settings in the AMD software. There was heaps of discussion on this. I tried changing these, but I couldn't even get in to the software and change anything before the system crashed.

The next thing I wanted to try was a clean driver install, but I couldn't get the system running long enough to install the drivers without a crash. So I rebooted into safe mode, and tried installing the drivers there, but obviously that wouldn't work. I also tried changing the power states, but the AMD software won't run in safe mode. However, I did notice it wasn't crashing while in safe mode...

So from there I did a clean boot (disabled all startup items and scheduled tasks) and by process of elimination finally discovered it was actually HWInfo64 that was causing the crash.

I'm glad it was all sorted in the end, but it took a lot longer than it could have. Despite having built many PCs, modded, overclocked, worked in tech support etc., I still managed to get distracted by various red herrings, when I should have stuck to the simple stuff first. I hope this could serve as a reminder to other PC builders - in these situations, keep your cool, work logically and start with the simple stuff.

tl:dr Got a new GPU that kept crashing. Tried various in depth fixes, then found out the solution was actually simple.

How much of a performance boost is i5 4690k to Ryzen 5 3600?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 11:45 AM PDT

How much of a gaming performance boost would I see from upgrading my i54690k (4.5ghz OC) to a Ryzen 5 3600? Reason I ask because I did a google search and this benchmark website said it was only 5% faster :0

I thought it would be much more..

After some research I don't know what is the best between :

Summer Camp is cancelled--Please help a dad.

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:30 AM PDT

Backstory: 100% of my son's (12) summer camps were cancelled, and he REALLY wants to build a gaming PC (for FPS). I'll call it father-son bonding during the build. I asked him to do the research and he came up with the list below.

Is there anything on this list out-of-line (too extreme in either direction) in this build? I'm shooting for a PC that will run the latest games for at least 2 years (or is that wishful thinking?).

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $171.89 @ Amazon
CPU Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition 57.3 CFM CPU Cooler $44.00 @ Amazon
Motherboard MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard $225.00 @ Amazon
    Memory Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory $145.19 @ Amazon
Storage Western Digital SN750 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive $134.99 @ Newegg
Video Card Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB PULSE Video Card $399.99 @ Amazon
Case Fractal Design Focus G ATX Mid Tower Case $63.89 @ B&H
Power Supply Cooler Master MWE Gold 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply $99.99 @ Best Buy

Edit: Clarifications--He's 12yo (not 12 summer camps). Currently gaming on an underpowered laptop. I find it amazing that I can get such detailed responses in just a couple of hours, thank you.

    New build advice (after)

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 01:05 PM PDT

So I recently built two new systems. Initially I was just building a gaming/streaming system for my son but after I finished I started getting jealous and decided to build another for myself. I went into it head first not really knowing much but now that I'm done I am second guessing and starting to look into perfecting them (if needed). Here is the link to my specs https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Nateb1583/saved/#view=nXs68d . Additionally I am using an Alienware 27" 240hz 1080p monitor ( https://www.bestbuy.com/site/alienware-27-ips-led-fhd-freesync-monitor-black/6375328.p?skuId=6375328 ). Specific questions I have are regarding the ram (3200mhz) and if it is limiting the system in any way and if I should be shopping 3600mhz. I have been reading a lot of people saying that Ryzen CPU's really benefit from super fast ram but I don't know what is to gain. Second is with the hdd. I have no experience with Barracuda and again, wondering if it is slowing anything. Also the Mobo was on the cheaper side so not sure if it is adequate. It will run anything I throw at it on max specs so far. I am not having any issues with it (yet), just have a nagging feeling I need to keep messing with it. I will post specs for the second system shortly when I have a few minutes.

Failing to boot after enabling XMP profile

I tried enabling XMP profile for the first time, then after I click save and restart it fails to boot. The fans spin for a few seconds, then stop then spin again. It just repeats this cycle over and over again. No signal on the monitor.

2060 Super or 2070 non-super for the same price

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 11:28 AM PDT

Gigabyte Geforce RTX 2060 Super Windforce OC

    Gigabyte RTX 2070 Windforce 2x

Both of the cards are around the same price (10$ difference)

Also, please don't suggest to wait for the upcoming releases. 5700XT is costlier than 2070 so please don't mention it as well.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Final form of my rig after switching from a custom loop and sourcing the parts for the past 3 months

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 12:25 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/zM7mKnl

I wanted to share the final form of my current rig with you. After 3 months of experimenting and going through a lot of enthusiasm buying, I settled on this and finally.. finally it makes me happy.

Below is a photo of what I came through from (in progress build at that time, but you get the point). I am glad that I am really satisfied now! Wasn't like that from beginning, hear me out!

I had some rough times, switching back and forth between a lot o' parts, not being able to decide what I wanted, figuring out wether the price of something was worth it or not etc.

The process was disturbing, I was not able to enjoy it at all! Piece by piece, I was just going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole, and not being satisfied.

RGB this, RGB that? I don't like huge spectacles of RGB, I wanted something to be noticed, but stealthy, not a screamer. 'Everywhere I see lots of RGB, and a well defined style of what an awesome build should look like, right? So why not just make it look the same?', I was saying to myself. But it was not my style.

I went through RGB and non RGB fans just to see how it made me feel. It did not satisfy me, not even the shiny custom loop I built. Seeking pleasure in mainstream things brought me to an endless cycle of unpleasantry.

This is how I got my perfect rig, perfect for me, which soothes my soul and eyes, if you feel me.

Running 1440p, 165Hz, G-Sync & HDR monitors, the rig runs smoothly, silent and cool. Software development done on it as well.

This being said, thanks for reading my story.

I hope you find what is good for yourself as well!

Brand new to PC gaming - help/feedback?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 12:07 PM PDT

Cut me some slack here, please. Have always been a console gamer (Xbox since the original) and have thought about making the switch to PC. Played DAOC a long time ago on PC and remember loving it. Well I did, and through some recommendations I ended up purchasing a prebuilt desktop through ibuypower, link below.

    https://www.ibuypower.com/Store/Gaming-RDY-EMRRG203

I guess I'm just asking for feedback on this purchase since I just don't understand as much as I thought I would. Looking back likely would've rather built from the ground up but here we are.

I believe the video card (GeForce rtx 2060 super) is good enough for now but will need to upgrade. Running a Ryzen 3700x, too, which I've read is just fine.

Games being played: CoD (multi+warzone), WoW, GTA/RD, AC Valhalla

Appreciate any responses ahead of time.

    RGB fans without controller?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 12:57 PM PDT

I would like to add some RGB fans to my build, but I can't quite get my head around what I need to be able to control the lighting.

Can anyone recommend some relatively inexpensive 120mm and 140mm fans with half-decent RGB that can be controlled by software and without requiring a dedicated controller? Do all fans have this functionality?

I have a B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC motherboard. My case is an NZXT H510.

I am looking for 3x140mm fans and 1x120mm fan.

Opinions about my new build just ordered

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 02:37 PM PDT

Hello everyone, just ordered new parts for a new build of mine, here is the list

    Amd Ryzen 7 3700x
    Asus rog strix B550-F-gaming
    2x8gb corsair vengeance lpx 3200mhz
    noctua NH-D15 (brown)
    sabrent nvme 1tb
    crucial MX500 ssd 500gb
    corsair RM750 750W
    thermaltake commander C35 TG ARGB
    GTX 1080 OC

that was a build I planned to get at about late september to update my 7 years old work desktop, unfortunately just today my old pc decided to drop me for good and had to buy a new one.
Due necessity had to deal with some compromises... the mobo is extremely good, maybe too much ahahah unfortunately cheaper stuff like msi mortar b550 or asus b500 tuf weren't available and had to get the most available one. I wished to get the chromax nh-15d but as said... I'm in hurry.
Honestly never read great reviews/feedbacks about thermaltake products, but since the CM H500P wasn't available, just had to rely to the largest case I could get since I would got struggles with the nzxt510i because of noctua size.
Since this desktop will be mainly used for work, I'll use temporarily my old gtx 1080OC waiting for 3060/3070 since can only use this pc for FHD or ultrawide 1080p.
