Why is BIOS size still a limitation in 2020? Is flash storage too expensive for motherboard manufacturers? Does it have to be small?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 04:59 AM PDT

Correct me if I'm wrong, but back in the days we used ROM chips to store BIOS. These days we use flash storage to store the more advanced version of the BIOS, the UEFI.

It boggles my mind why would it be an excuse for not supporting something on a perfectly capable motherboard only because there's not enough storage room to store the configurations. (Let's not talk about AMD B450 controversy unless absolutely relevant). We now have dirt cheap Micro SD cards which are flash storage that go up to 1TB. I just don't understand why can't they use bigger storage for UEFI?

GPU market shares flat between AMD & nVidia in Q1'20

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:37 AM PDT

According to Jon Peddie Research, market shares for add-in-board (AiB = desktop graphics cards) are nearly identical in Q1'20 compared to Q4'19. Sales decreased quarter-to-quarter by -19.5%, but increased by 7.0% year-by-year. JPR see here some impact of the corona crisis, but otherwise the first quarter is always some weaker.

    AiB GPUs Sales Q1'19 Q2'19 Q3'19 Q4'19 Q1'20
    AMD 22.7% 32.1% 27.1% 31.1% 30.8%
    nVidia 77.3% 67.9% 72.9% 68.9% 69.2%

    Infographic: Add-in Board GPU Market Share 2002 - Q1'2020

All GPU sales includes the mobile graphics solutions and all integrated graphics solutions (iGPU) in modern CPUs. So, this stat is always in favor of iGPU suppliers like Intel and AMD, as the ratio between discrete and integrated solutions is around 3:1 (75% vs. 25%). Intel usually dominate this market and gain some market share this quarter, maybe because they lose some market share in the previous quarter.

    all PC GPUs Sales Q1'19 Q2'19 Q3'19 Q4'19 Q1'20
    AMD 15% 16% 16% 19% ~17%
    Intel 69% 65% 65% 63% ~67%
    nVidia 16% 19% 19% 18% ~16%

Newly Leaked Time Spy benchmarks show the i7-1165G7 matching a 25W 4700U in CPU tests.

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 07:01 AM PDT

A comparison between the 1165G7, 4700U, and 4800U. SMT seems to give the 4800U an 18% advantage over the 1165G7:

    Test 1165G7 (4C/8T) 4700U (8C/8T) 4800U (8C/16T)
    CPU Score 5304 5302 6275
    Graphics Score 1482 1093 1119

    Note that the 4700U is using DDR4 3200 MT/s while the 1165G7 and 4800U are using LPDDR4X 4266 MT/s

Why is there still RAM modules, isn‘t the next step to have it on CPU directly? Same with GPU.

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 04:09 PM PDT

Shorter ways, lower larency. Yes RAM modules and its modularity = upgrading. But isn't this a bottleneck? Same with GPU. I think it's just the cost, or just the RAM modules industries want a piece of the cake, money. That's why this little steps in performance (GPU/CPU) from year to year. To spread the time in earning money. New storage techs is also since some years in research, but was also in some news (was it MRAM? and more).

Yeah, is all about costs and what consumers would pay i guess, those calculations.

I guess also that the costs (producing, finance (credits)), generally the pressure of the finance system.
