    Simple Questions - June 20, 2020

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Anyone else spend way too much time on here so they can vicariously live through other people's builds/enjoyment while they wait to build their own PC

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 10:22 AM PDT

    Or just me?

Saved the money to build a pc and then COVID19 happened and I was advised to just wait and then see what happens when new shit comes out so I'm just living through y'all right now

    Edit:

    • what are some companies that make quality shit? I know soooo many people pushing me for a Seasonic PSU. Anything else I should look into?

    • what case would y'all recommend? I don't care for a fancy looking one but one that makes building a pc easier for me and for making adjustments in the future

How much of a difference is there between 1080p and 1440p?

My first PC build alone and the first one in 11 years

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 06:09 AM PDT

I finally finished my very first and very own PC build today. After waiting almost a month for everything to deliver I couldn't be happier. My Boot Camp on a MacBook gaming days are over.

The last build I made with my dad when I was 10/11 and it's been over a decade. I was really excited, watched lots of guides and asked for advice on Reddit a few times.

Here are a picture and the list of all the components I used.

I got a few good deals and managed to stay under my 1000€ budget even with 2 SSDs and the MSI Gaming version of the 1660 SUPER. The motherboard was a gift and is mostly there to be future proof. I'm planning to upgrade again in about a year. I know its plenty overkill. My other option was the B450 Carbon Max WiFi, which was sadly out of stock everywhere and would not have been free.

The build went pretty smoothly apart from forgetting to pre-plug the CPU power and spending about 15 minutes fiddling them down to the connectors in the board. I also wish the power supply would include a single connector 8-pin PCI-e connector, but I tucked the second one away for the graphics card.

    Here is the finished build.

It runs pretty well. Sadly it's a tiny bit louder than I had hoped, but I guess that is also due to the case not being sound dampening at all. I know nothing about fan curves so I'm not fiddling with them just yet.

All in all I'm super stoked to finally become a PC gamer!

Please help! BF is turning 30 and I want to suprise him with parts to build a gaming PC but I don't know anything about PCs!

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Pretty much as the title says. Sorry for formatting btw, am on mobile and also nervous!

I made a lot of plans for my SOs 30th birthday but covid happened so I went back to the drawing board. For backstory, he's always wanted to build his own PC and has experience/enjoyed tinkering with his old laptop to update it and it worked like a charm.

I want to buy him all the parts he'll need to build a neat PC which he can use for gaming. Knowing him, he won't want or need the most powerful graphics card on the market or anything. But something modest and easy he can enjoy putting together.

But here's my problem. Although I have basic technological knowledge (my colleagues often come to me if they have IT issues) I will freely admit that I'm a console girl (sorry please don't downvote!) As a result I have no clue where to even start when it comes to buying everything he'll need. I don't even know if my budget will be enough to cover it, but I want to at least try because he's a great guy and he deserves a good birthday covid aside (and I have a few more months to save up too, this isn't a last minute change).

My budget is around £1000 and I'm UK based if that helps.

Please help! Any advice will be appreciated, even if to tell me £1000 won't be enough and I should take more time to save/go back to the drawing board.

    Thank you!

Do you guys shut down your PC every night?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 08:59 AM PDT

I shut down my PC every night when I've finished using it. I often see people saying they leave their PCs on for days or even weeks.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages to shutting down every day?

Does the refresh rate in a monitor affect frames?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 03:17 AM PDT

So this might be a really stupid question, please bare with me. If I get a 144 Hz panel does that mean that the fps in the games can't go further than 144 fps, even if the GPU is capable of it?

    Upgrade help

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 12:55 PM PDT

Hi, I'm in a situation with my build where older games run fine but in more modern titles such as Destiny 2 i start suffering from fluctuating fps at 80%< cpu usage (gpu stays below cpu unless i max out the graphics). My CPU is an i5-4670K OC'd at 4.2ghz at the moment. As for other main components i have an R9 390 and 8gb of 1333mhz ddr3. Question is would upgrading to a Ryzen 5 2600 alongside with 16gb of ddr4 be a smart upgrade? I'm slightly confused about how high rated the i5-4670K is on userbenchmark

1660 Super won't display video on new build, will in other pc

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 12:52 PM PDT

So, I'm making this post on behalf of a friend right now as his pc is currently in pieces as we're swapping components in and out of the new pc in order to determine what works and what does not.

Short backstory - My friend has a friend of his own who was looking for a new pc to finally move on from his old all-in-one, so I threw together a decent little part list for him with a budget of ~650.

All the parts arrived and were confirmed to work, but come build time we've run into a little bit of a snag with the graphics card. When the 1660 super is plugged into the new build, it won't display any video output and the mobo will refuse to post. Mobo's speaker throws the expected beep code, 1 long 3 short. I asked my friend to test it in his own pc, and when in his computer it does indeed work. To confirm it isn't a problem with the topmost pcie slot on the new Gigabyte motherboard, I had my friend swap in both his own GTX 1060 and a spare RX 460. Both were able to display video and the mobo POSTed successfully with each card. We've been brainstorming for the last few hours about what the issue might potentially be, but both of us are incredibly stressed out and I feel like we've exhausted our options.

    Things we've tried so far:

    • Ensuring motherboard has the latest bios revision (it does)
    • Reseating all components
    • Reseating all power cables
    • Swapping graphics cards to other pc (1660 super works in other pc)
    • Trying separate power supply
    • Changing pcie device mode to UEFI/Legacy, neither worked
    • Trying another monitor/display cable
    • Using 2nd pcie slot but it was physically inaccessible at that point in the build, but shouldn't matter as the 460 and 1060 worked in the top slot

These are all the things either of us could think of while we're stressed out, so it's possible the issue is something we just haven't had the presence of mind to think about. I'm posting this in the hopes that someone out there has a different perspective on the issue, which could be exactly what we need.

Any and all help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

13 years old but building a pc

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 03:03 PM PDT

So I decided to switch from a low end laptop to a pc and it went horrible. I used the 300$ budget build from ScatterVolt but with different parts. I switched the case/power supply combo with a Thermaltake Smart 430W and the Aerocool Cylon also the WD 1.0 Harddrive , same motherboard, CPU and Ram. Once I turned it on it didn't work, I got my dads friend to help me and also didn't work as well. I plugged everything correctly but don't know what to do.

    PC upgrade help

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 02:57 PM PDT

So I'm going to upgrade my pc so I can play better VR games but I don't know which graphics card to buy. My budget is £500, I was planning to buy a 2070 super but if i get a 2070 I can buy the official oculus link cable. BTW this £500 is my Bday + Xmas money so it would take a while for me to make £80.

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 06:30 AM PDT

Hey, does anyone has any reomendations for a 1440p 27inch that doesn't break the bank? At max I could spend 350-400 euros on a monitor liek this, but preferably more at the 350 side. Also, if possible I'd like gsync (and obviously an IPS pannel).

    (for gaming)

    Thanks in advance

How can this list be made better?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 02:39 PM PDT

    My List.

I'd prefer an RGB look with a nice case, powerful CPU + GPU and enough RAM. I'll be doing some heavy gaming on it as well as other everyday tasks but what about this list do you think can be improved? Budget is up to £1200 but I don't mind spending a little extra if it makes a big difference. Honestly, I also don't mind completely dropping the RGB look to get a more powerful system, but then again, £1200 should be enough for both.

Let me know what you think!
