    Simple Questions - April 20, 2020

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 05:16 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

After 4 months of buying new replacement parts for my computer because I couldn't figure out why on earth my GPU wouldn't turn on. Today I figured it out.

I hadn't plugged it in properly.

    I wanna neck myself.

UPGRADE BUILD TIPS (For switching over, can also help new builders)

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 04:41 PM PDT

First I would love to say that this is one of the best communities I've ever seen. The fact that there are thousands of active users ready to help one another to achieve their goals is amazing. Thank you all for putting in the time to help one another. You can become a pro just by constantly reading the threads. So thank you everyone here.

I recently made the switch to Ryzen and i couldnt be more happy. I've learned a few things along the way that can help those who are either making the switch, or are still hesitant to do so.

    1. COMPATIBILITY : When you are picking parts for your build, AMD is so universal when it comes to their part compatibility. Most of their motherboards and compatible with their last few generations of CPUs (Ryzen gen 1-3). And the best part is, most of the older motherboards don't even require a motherboard update. If older motherboard boxes (b450 are the common older mobo, but there are others) says "Ryzen 3000 ready", then you don't even need a bios update, just install your parts and it will boot just fine.

Also, if you are currently running DDR4 RAM on your intel system, you can use it for AMD, albeit the speeds might be slower for and AMD system(AMD loves fast RAM), but you can save money for the time being and upgrade, thats a cost effective option.

    2) INSTALLATION : Assuming that you are switching out your CPU, MOBO, and RAM, installation is a breeze. All you have to do is remove all header connections on your current mobo, and install the new parts and plug everything back in. Its literally switching from one mobo to another.

    3) FIRST BOOT : When everything is connected and plugged correctly, booting up for the first time might take a couple minutes. I guess that every part needs to communicate and verify itself before it can properly start up. My new Ryzen build took about 4 minutes to start into windows, it was a black screen and at first i was nervous but I remember reading that it can take a while for a new ryzen build to boot up.

    4) ALWAYS BE AWARE : Before you finalized picking out your motherboard for your new Ryzen build, make sure that you have all the appropriate headers and connections that you had in your previous motherboard (ie usb ports, rgb headers, fan connectors, sata ports, m2 slots, etc). Because if you pick a new motherboard that doesn't have at least what your previous motherboard already had, you might put yourself in trouble.

Also, there might be a chance that windows might start bugging you and say that your windows 10 isn't activated. When you change multiple parts on a system, your windows might think its and entire new computer and thinks you never activated windows. There is an easy fix to this, by going into your system settings and troubleshoot the activation of windows, it gives you an option to state that you changed parts, and it will reactivate windows for you.

If anyone has any questions about this or about anything else, im more than happy to share my experience with you all. Paying it foward!

    EDIT :

I also wanted to add these extra trips made by Human_no_4815162342 on this post (thank you so much for your insight!):

Keep your data safe and do full backups before doing anything and if you can do it a clean install of the OS is better than moving an old one to the new machine. Don't forget to install the drivers needed, especially the graphics. For the programs start from ninite to get the most common free ones (browsers, utilities but also FOSS programs).

Mounting hardware for aftermarket CPU coolers is different between Intel and AMD but on most coolers both are provided.

Be careful of the pins on the CPU when you install it, align the marked corner and push down the lever, no force is required on the CPU itself you just have to gently put it in the right place.

Ram usually goes in alternate slots to get dual channel speeds, refer to your motherboard manual but usually 2 and 4 are the main slots. If you buy new RAM check the motherboard QVL (qualified vendors list) if you want it to works out of the box without issues.

If you make changes to your build check that the Power Supply is enough, if you buy a new one don't cheap out as the safety of the whole build depends on the quality of the PSU and don't over do it because when used wattages too much lower than what they are rated for power supplies lose efficiency. Get something that is enough for your build at maximum usage leaving some room for future upgrades.

Finally for the case unless you are going from a smaller motherboard to a bigger one (mini itx < micro atx < atx) there shouldn' be problems, check the cooler height and the max supported height of your case and the max supported graphics card size. If the front connectivity doesn't match the connectors on your motherboard you can get connectors for cheap sacrificing some speed (ie USB 3.0 to internal USB 2.0) or get front panel expansions (5.25" or 3.5", not all case have them) or a pci panel not necessarily to a pci slot on your motherboard, many go to sata or USB connectors to add extra ports. Expansion slots can also be used as hard drive cages with the correct adapters.

This is what i'm considering. I prefer to buy locally (portuguese stores, so prices may vary a bit from what you're accustomed to.

I'm choosing the nzxt case or a fractal meshify one for airflow purposes and because the included fans should be good enough aswell (i think)

I also chose to go with a 144hz 1080p monitor instead of 1440p

    Any tips?

    Build Help: $1,000 Target Budget

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 08:15 AM PDT

Hello All - I am helping my cousin put a PC together and I have tried tweaking his parts to reach our target budget of $1,000 but I am struggling. My cousin plans to use this PC for gaming/streaming and he is looking to play on 1080p. He needs a full build + peripherals for this target. If you would take a look at the list and point out where we can make changes, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

GPU (RX 580) prices going back up?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 01:07 PM PDT

A friend asked to build a cheap 1080p 60fps gaming PC, and while looking up RX 480/580 prices, ive noticed they've actually gone up a bit on the used market, I used to be able to find 480 8GB's for like under 110 easily, now I can't even find one under 130, anyone noticed this?

Updating my PC after 12 year overclocked life with i7-920 and I forgot how to do this.

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 08:53 AM PDT

So my PC is finally starting to have problems after more than a decade of heavy use and gaming while overclocked to 3.8ghz from the stock 2.6. When I built this thing, PC building was a hobby and I was up to date on all the hardware wars between AMD/Intel/Nvidia/Whoever and apparently knew how to make it last.

Now, I have no idea... My hobby turned into an IT career and I lost track of everything PC hardware related (I work on servers and networks now) and I just want my PC to turn on and run games when I'm bored. I have recently put a new PSU and SSD drives into my current PC so I'm not in need of either of those yet but I do plan on getting an M.2 drive soon. Anyways, here is the list of parts I came up with after hours of looking around, things have changed A LOT since I last did this so any help in optimizing this would be appreciated.

    EDIT* Hope this works right....

    A few miscellaneous questions:

    • Will this build be VR ready, or at least in a good upgrade path for that being possible?
    • Will I be okay electing to use the CPU cooler included with the Ryzen 7? I don't plan on doing any overclocking or other crazy lifts.
    • Does MSI still make the Gaming X Trio or Gaming Z Trio versions of the 2070 Super? That seems like the ideal card to go with here if the price is worth it.
    • Does the Windows 10 version I included come with a thumb drive for installation?
    • 1440p/4K gaming: Is it possible with this build, and what's a highly recommended monitor here?

Thanks for any and all advice. Looking forward to pulling the trigger on this.

    Ryzen 5 2600x temps.

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 12:59 PM PDT

Hello /r/buildapc, I'm here to ask if my temperatures are normal and safe. I built my pc about a week ago, and I've been monitoring my Temps using nzxt cam and Hw monitor. My specs are: • Ryzen 5 2600x(stock cooler) • EVGA rtx 2060 KO • Crucial ballistix gaming 3200mhz ram • Asrock b450m pro 4 • Cooler master q300l case • 500gb crucial nvme.2 and • 500w evga white psu. I have my psu fan facing down, the case came with a chassis fan flowing outwards in the top rear, I purchased two additional 120mm fans and mounted one on the top of the case flowing outwards, and then one on the front face of the case flowing inwards. My cpu Temps hover around 35 degrees Celsius no load, and when playing intensive games hover between 75 degrees and peak at 80 degrees. My GPA surprisingly follows similar temperatures, no load 35 degrees, loaded 80 to 85 degrees. I'm not having any decrease in performance, no throttling or anything of the sort, but I just want to be sure my fans are ideally set up and my temps are good. I plan to upgrade my cpu cooler in the future. Thank you for your time :)

First ever build (goodbye laptop) ~£700

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 10:58 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm spending my quarantine dreaming of a new pc, and while I can't afford anything for a while it'd be good to replace my 10yo Satellite once I have funds. Would finally be able to game! I'm probably brand new to all this, the list below is mostly suggestions from my brother (built his own years back) and bits of advice from here and there, couldn't remember where though. Plus I'm getting lost weighing up pros and cons with all the possible components. How's it looking? Would love to keep cost down so if there are cheaper alternatives, by all means throw them my way!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Queries:

    - Are open mesh-fronts for cases worth it? Seems to be sacrificing quietness for airflow but I'm A-OK with this.

    - I've seen people with similar priced set-ups but they spend much more on GPUs, do I need to do the same?

    - Got to be honest, I only chose the Tomahawk because it comes up a lot. What's better?

EDIT: 2 Compatability Notes from PCPartPicker:

    • **Note:**The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled.
    • **Note:**Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders.

    Memory for R7 2700X

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 07:06 AM PDT

    Hey there,

My computer has a R7 2700X on a ASUS Prime X370-Pro with a 16GB 2400MHz CL15 kit. Since Ryzen scales greatly with RAM speeds I wanted to go ahead and upgrade my RAM.

    I found two interesting kits:

    3200MHz CL16-18-18-38 for 79€ (includes shipping)

    3600MHz CL17-19-19-39 for 97€ (includes shipping)

My motherboard says it supports RAM following the PC4-25600U norm.

Since I don't know anything about that I'm not certain which to use.

My current RAM is PC4-19200U and works. The 3200MHz RAM is PC4-25600U whereas the 3600MHz is 28800U.

    So I've got some questions:

    1. Is the 3600MHz CL17 so much better than the 3200MHz CL regarding gaming performance?
    2. Could I even load the XMP profile of the 3600MHz RAM?

Help with a first time build

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 07:43 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I made a reddit just for this, lol. I'm doing a first time build geared toward gaming specifically for Ark survival evolved. I figure if it can run that it can run anything. I've gamed all kinds of consoles but never pcs. I've made a list on pcpartpicker and was wondering if you guys could take a look. See if I'm missing anything or any changes should be made?

Specifically I'm wondering if that motherboard is ok? Also, for the video card I've been bouncing between the 5600 and 5700. From researching I think the 5600 is pretty solid and I dont know if the performance vs price is worth it to go with the 5700. And lastly, I dont know if it's worth upgrading the cpu from ryzen 3600 to the 3700. Really I'd like to keep the whole build under $1000 (I know right now once I add in monitor and windows itll be above that) but at the same time I want to be able to game and maybe stream in the future without problems.

    Thank you!

WiFi Card, USB WiFi Adapter, or WiFi extender with Ethernet ports

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 01:56 PM PDT

Hey guys, my friend has been needing some sort of WiFi adapter for his build since his router is in the other room so connecting directly to the router with an ethernet cable is not an option for him. I've been debating between having him get either a WiFi card like this one. A USB WiFi adapter like this one. Or a WiFi extender with Ethernet ports like this one

    Monitor Advice

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 08:46 AM PDT

    Hi all!

Not sure if i can post this here?

I'm looking for an ultrawide (34inch looks amazing) for both gaming and graphic design. So color accuracy is quite important. My first idea was the Asus ProArt PA34VC. but the Freesync bothered me. So now i'm thinking of the Acer Predator X34P. which looks the part, good colors after some calibrating, G-Sync, 10-bit, IPS, 1440p,...

Most of my graphic design i do on a Macbook Pro (2020) but some also on the gaming machine (r7 3700x 32GB RAM 2080 Super), if its any help and i prefer to keep to 1440p instead of 4K for the moment.

So my question is. is this a good choice or should i maybe look into the Alienware AW3420DW? Or do you guys recommend another monitor?

    Thanks in advance guys!

CPU 8+4 Connection on the Gigabyte Z390 AORUS ULTRA using a Corsair RMx 850w PSU. Do I need the 4 pin?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 01:43 PM PDT

This is the build I'm assembling right now:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/cultmethod/saved/DxtNP6

On the Z390 AORUS ULTRA, the CPU power connection is 8x and a 4x which I read is for more extreme overclocking. Here's a pic of the board and the CPU cable that came with the RMx 850.

I do plan on overclocking the 9900KF to at least 5ghz as it will be water-cooled.

Do I need the additional 4x connection? If so, can someone kindly link me to the correct product?

    First build parts help

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 01:42 PM PDT

hey! i'm incredibly new to pc building and, while i've done a lot of research for these parts, i would still appreciate some help and guidance! here is my parts list!

    general information:

i live in the uk. this pc is currently at my max budget, and any suggestions which can take down the price without sacrificing much performance would be greatly appreciated. i'm getting a powerline adapter to use ethernet for it. i'm mostly going to be playing singleplayer games, but i'll still do multiplayer games occasionally! i'm also going to be streaming things to a discord server of my friends! it'll be the machine i run various art programs & coding programs on, like clip studio paint & atom editor. neither are very demanding, but it's worth mentioning! i currently have a single 1080p monitor, but in the future (when i'm not broke after buying this lol) i'm planning to get two more monitors. i also want to get an internal capture card at some point, but that will be a long time down the line.

thank you so much! sorry if there's anything i've missed/etiquette i've mucked up, this is my first reddit post!

    CPU or GPU Upgrade?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 01:40 PM PDT

Almost a year ago I built my first PC, it's nothing high end, but it's served me well so far. The specs are alright for something entry level, but it could definitely do with an upgrade at some point (I'll admit, I'm thinking more about the future than the present with this, so it's not hugely important yet.)

    My CPU is a ryzen 5 1600, and my GPU is a 4gb rx570.

I'll upgrade both over time, but I don't know whether I should upgrade my CPU or GPU first.

I know a GPU upgrade would give me a bigger improvement in games, and it would also speed up my video editing. But from what I've heard, upgrading the CPU would make a bigger impact in video editing, and I feel like my current CPU could cause some bottlenecks in games especially with Ampere and Big Navi coming out by the end of this year.

I'm pretty serious about getting into video editing, but I do quite a lot of gaming as well, so performance in both is equally important to me.

I would appreciate any ideas about which one you think should be upgraded first.
