My first build was a success!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:17 AM PST

I just want to say a big thank you to the r/buildapc and r/pcmasterrace community. It helped alot during the build process. I also want to say thank you to Bitwit, Jayztwocents, and Paul's Hardware from YouTube. Their videos are very informative and educational.

I only had one hiccup during the whole build. I was planning to just use the Stock AMD CPU Cooler, but my motherboard manufacturer forgot to add an AM4 Backplate in packaging. So I had to drive to my nearest CanadaComputers in the middle of the build to buy an aftermarket cooler. A nice upgrade to the stock cpu cooler. Other than that, the build went smoothly and booted up on the first try.

It took me around 4hrs to complete the build, including the time I had to drive to CanadaComputers. I spent most of that time on cable management in my case, considering I had 6 ARGB fans that needed to be connected to a fan hub(Corsair Commander Pro and Lighting Node Pro).

My biggest tips to new builders, like myself, is to READ THE MOBO MANUAL(can't stress this enough), make sure your connections are secure. There's an audible click(on most) that tells you that you've pushed it all the way in, and CABLE MANAGEMENT IS A MUST, spend time on it.

Again, thank you to the r/buildapc and r/pcmasterrace community!

Edit: Dear Redditors, please let me clarify. The prices on pcpartpicker does not reflect what I actually paid for the parts. I bought almost everything on sale, the lowest being 15% off. The MSI monitor ($300+) was gifted to me, as well as the Memory Kit and HyperX headset. Don't worry, I did not waste my money :)

First time Building PC, check in before ordering

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:41 AM PST

I am going to build my first PC and I already have:

The GPU, a Radeon RX 580 and

    two 8GB DDR4 Crucial 2133mhz CL16 RAM sticks and

a Switching Power Supply 650W ATX and

a fairly big case (can't find the model number, can send more info if necessary)

    I am about to order:

    AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor (reduced to 119 $ on amazon)

MSI B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard for 111$

PNY CS900 240GB 2.5" SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - (SSD7CS900-240-RB) for 35$

Do I need to know anything else? Are those parts compatible?

A friend recommends to get the 5 3600 CPU but then I think I need a better motherboard because of the outdated BIOS. If it was only the better CPU okay but together with a better motherboard I would have to pay quite a bit more am I correct?

Is both the 8 pin and 4 pin Cpu power supply connector needed?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:15 AM PST

So my pc has been having a lot of trouble and now I'm asking myself the question if it could be my cpu not having enough power. Because i only have the 8 pin connector hooked up. Maybe someone can help me with this...

Is this gaming build gonna work out?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:04 AM PST

Seagate Fire Cuda 2tb ssd Hard drive hybrid - $60

    Xfx Radeon rx 570, 1286 mhz, 8gb gddr5 - $139

    2x8gb ram silicon power -$55

    Amd ryzen 5 3400g -$147

    Am4 motherboard- $67.99

Corsair carbide series 100R mid tower case $55 And a 600w power supply - $43.81

    Price is about $568

My buddy says I should get an nvidia graphics card but it's hard to find a less expensive 8gb card. I just want to be able to play games like CS, Gmod, siege, and split gate among other games, what kind of upgrades would I need to stream as well?

Ran MemTest, no errors, 3200 OC RAM causing occasional overclock failed screen when waking from sleep.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:32 AM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    i7 6700k

Thermalright True Spirit 120 CPU Cooler

    MSI z170a SLI Plus Motherboard

    16 GB Corsair LPX 3200Mhz 16 CAS RAM CMK16GX4M2B3200C16

    Gigabyte OC 5700 XT

    EVGA 650 GQ PSU

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Previously, I had a set of 2400 Mhz RAM and I think I wasn't even XMPing the RAM and it was running at 2133 the entire time. Standard value kingston stuff, no heatspreaders, nothing fancy. Never had a problem with stability.

I bought Corsair's LPX 3200 16 RAM because I wanted faster RAM for future plans of possibly going with a Ryzen CPU. My motherboard is rated to support this specific model and the speed, according to MSI's support compatibility website (see below for link).

However, since installing it (in the 2 and 4 slots, as usual), I occasionally will get Overclocked Failed messages when waking up my PC from sleep. I've never had my PC black screen while gaming or otherwise. Only when waking from sleep. I'll need to restart the PC and that's when I'll see the Overclock Failed message, boot into BIOS, set the XMP again or choose the profile, and run smoothly from there.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I have tried lowering the clock speed of the ram from the XMP of 3200 to other values like 3000 or 2400. The issue still seems to come up. I have tried using MSI's Memory Try-It with Samsung selected (because Samsung is the maker for these sticks) and that would also occasionally cause the failed screen to appear when waking.

I ran MemTest86 and it did the 4 passes of the entire test suite and 0 errors appeared. This was with the XMP settings enabled.

I've tried adding a little more voltage like 1.36 instead of 1.35.

I have not tried other motherboard DIMM slots.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

My CPU is OC to 4.2 GHz though in the past I have reached 4.6 stable. I lowered it because I didn't need the juice really and wanted lower temps (though stress tests never really exceeded the 70s C).

Here you can see CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 is supported: https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z170A-SLI-PLUS.html#support-mem-4

Is this a motherboard issue seeing as MemTest didn't run? A voltage instability issue? I'm not savvy with OCing RAM as I am with CPUs (a lot more settings to look at and be careful with :) ).

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Corsair Vs 550w PSU

Second Build, almost ready to go.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:18 PM PST

Understandably didn't get much attention around the holidays, so asking once more. Just looking for a second opinion before I spend any money.

This will primarily be a gaming PC. Just want to run some high end graphics on bigger titles and the occasional MMO, and maybe look into streaming down the line. I was aiming to keep this build between $1500-1700, so I'm already a bit over budget, but it's not too much of an issue right now.

In my current setup I've got a 750w SuperNOVA G2 that's a few years old. Could I save a bit of money by using that one, or would a new PSU be better?

    Any thoughts are welcome!

    Bottlenecks

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 02:19 PM PST

If you want to have a high end gaming pc, but don't have the money to splurge on one yet, would it be plausible to buy a high end gpu and pair it with a low end cpu, or vice versa, and then upgrade the lower end part later to a high end part when you have more money? If so, which is the better route to take and why? (For example, buy a 9700k and a gtx 1050 ti, then get an rtx 2080 or buying an i3 9100 and an rtx 2080, and then upgrading to a 9700k)

    burning smell from new gpu

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:18 AM PST

I finished building this pc 3 weeks ago and started to notice a slight burning smell around the 2nd week. And in week 3 I even saw fps drops in some games (55 avg in rdr2 to 49 avg)

The smell only comes in when the gpu is under load. I've opened up the case and the smell is present only from the gpu.

Should I be worried? I don't have a warranty on the card so I'm not sure on what to do

TO UPGRADE OR REBUILD MY PC?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 02:18 PM PST

    Hello fellow r/buildapc users!

I have always appreciated the valuable help the gentlemen and ladies provided one another in support of their PC needs. It is truly encouraging to be apart of such an amazing community. With that, I have finally come across my first conundrum with the PC I built.

I've noticed that I deal with issues in my internet connectivity, more frequent program crashes, and not being able to meet graphic requirements for some games/programs. Not to mention for some reason in some instances it takes multiple times attempt to start my computer with the power button..(I think it might be a case issue). Anyway I think it is time to upgrade and in some cases (no pun intended for my case lol) update my components.

First I would like to preface what I do with my computer and intend to do with it. I work in an industry that heavily relies on AutoCAD (especially Civil 3D), so that is a priority program that needs to run on my rig. I also use my computer alot for my passion of making videos/short movies. I need it to smoothly render the video files in my editing software. I also like to play video games such as League of Legends, PUBG, Overwatch and Apex Legends. I would like the ability to record these games smoother so when I make a video with the game I don't lose out on the experience of playing it well. Another small hobby I've picked up is making a podcast, but this really doesn't require alot of computing power. In the future I would like to try to streaming myself playing some of my favorite games. It's something new I would like to try out.

Now with that in mind here is a list of all the components I currently use in my rig:

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 Hardrive 1: Crucial MX3002.5 inch SSD 250GB Hardrive 2: Baracoda 1TB RAM: 8 GB of RAM (2X4) Power Supply: 650 GQ evga Gold rating supply Graphics Card: RADEON RX 460 graphics CPU: AMD FX-8350 Eight Core Processor, 4000 Mhz, 4 Cores Case: Bitfenix BitFenix Nova Black Window ATX Mid Tower Case (BFX-NOV-100-KKWSK-RP) Wireless network card: TP-LINK (TL-WN881ND) N300 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Express Adapter

Please keep in mind that I built this computer back in 2016 when I was a student. It was affordable at the time but now as a young professional I think I can improve. The big question I do have is should I start from scratch or should I just replace some of my components to give me a better experience? After speaking with a quite knowledgeable IT friend I was given the advice to save my money a little more then start from scratch. I would like to know all your opinions! Please let me know what you think, can I improve my set up with some newer components? If so which components? Or should I just star new? In which case where should I begin with today's new hardware? Also could overclocking my CPU help me? I appreciate any and all advice and look forward to hearing from you :)

Helping a student of mine put together a budget $600 gaming PC. Help me meet that budget?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 11:10 AM PST

Hey everyone. I teach middle school and there is a little group of boys who all talk to me about PC gaming. One student in particular has been saving up and also has a slight budget from their parents for a total of $600. They will not need a mouse or keyboard- but they need EVERYTHING else including a monitor and a case.

They don't need speakers as they just plan to use their headphones.

They may be able to get a discounted copy of Windows, so I don't think that needs to be factored into the budget.

I told them I would help them build it if we could meet their budget.

They do not play very graphically taxing games. Mostly Minecraft and I'd imagine fortnite.

I live fairly close to a micro center.

If you could help me figure out how to stretch that budget to the max- I would be very grateful.

    PC showing black screen

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:07 AM PST

    Hello,

I booted up my computer today and it gave me a black screen with a white underscore on the top left corner of the screen (not blinking or anything) but after a few restarts, it now only shows a plain black screen. I also noticed that my motherboard shows an Ez debug LED light for VGA. After reading the manual, it means the GPU is not detected or failed.

    SPECS:

    i5 7600k MSI z270 SLI Plus 4gb x 4 - 16gb Corsair 2400Hz RAM EVGA 750 GQ PSU GTX 1060 Superclocked 3gb H100i V2 Cooler 120gb kingston boot drive 240gb kingston SSD 1TB WD blue Hard drive

The GPU fan spins for a few seconds after turning on the PC but displays a black screen. I have tried booting up the computer without the GPU, I have also tried installing it on different slots, i tried moving the RAM around (dual channel, single stick) i have tried connecting monitor directly to the motherboard, also tried connecting and disconnecting my boot drive.

Im not sure what else to try anymore. Ive had this computer for about 3 years and last time I used it was yesterday night to play some video games. Didnt notice any signs that the computer could be breaking or anything like that.

Edit: im typing this on mobile and specs list is not showing up as intended. Sorry.

Build crashed and lost one of my nvme drives. Need help or experience

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:35 AM PST

So I built a new pc and it was running fine for a few days. Last night it crashed and lost one of my nvme drives. Still boots and works but I can't find the drive and I don't understand why. Maybe it fried? Are they that delicate?

I wasn't even loading up the computer.

    What I have done:

Restart Check bios (it doesn't show)

    What I'm planning to do:

Take the nvme out and reseat it. Replace nvme

I just don't understand what would make it kick the drive like that. I'm still a newb to pc stuff so any help is appreciated.

Looking for help with upgrading my current build

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:09 PM PST

This is my first post here, be gentle please.

I've built this setup in october 2015 and I think it is due for an upgrade.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600 3.3 GHz Quad-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Scythe Mugen 4 79 CFM CPU Cooler

    Motherboard: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming - Motherboard - ATX - LGA1151 Socket

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO Series - Solid state drive - 250 GB

Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4 GB Video Card

Case: Fractal Design Define S ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply: Cooler Master V550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Since then I have upgraded my GPU to a 1080 but I wouldn't mind upgrading this again and selling the current card, and I have also added 8GB RAM.

Mainly I am looking to upgrade my CPU and possibly my GPU as I am also looking to buy a 4k monitor as my 2nd screen. Would love some advice from you guys and if you think I should upgrade something else aswell please let me know! Budget doesn't really matter too much if it means I won't have to upgrade for the upcoming years.

Question about MoBo headers for an RGB device (GPU bracket.)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 02:31 PM PST

Got a build done, but my 1080Ti is sagging like crazy. Interested in getting a GPU bracket, that also comes with Aura Sync compatible RGB. But I'm unsure what exact header I would need to plug it into.

It requires a 5V-ADD RGB Header. says it's compatible with MSI boards.I have a MSI X99A Gaming Pro Carbon (MS-7A20) board.

I see a 4 pin JLED1 header that is open on my board. Would that be the spot to plug it in at? I don't really see any other relevant headers. Are there adapters i can get if my board doesn't have the needed headers? I am not savvy about headers at all. It's all just pins and plugs to me.

    This is the bracket:https://www.amazon.com/upHere-Addressable-Graphics-Support-Bracket-GL28ARGB/dp/B07TT2RVFH/ref=pd_ybh_a_6?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=EPVG7CSE4VYEXWGPHPX9&th=1
