    Simple Questions - December 11, 2019

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Please don't bottleneck your computer with a bad monitor

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 08:00 AM PST

A little over a year ago I build a pretty powerful computer. Ryzen 5 2600X at 4.05Ghz OC, GTX 1080, 16GB of 3,600Mhz RAM, and a 1TB M.2 SSD. I've been quite happy with it, and I get great performance. I was planning on upgrading my monitor too, but I kept putting it off because my 1080p 60hz monitor was "good enough". Well I just recently got a 1440p 165hz G-Sync monitor, and it is fantastic. Everything looks amazing, and it's super smooth. I definitely wish I had gotten that monitor sooner!

    Should I get a 1070ti at this late 2019?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:01 AM PST

So I'm currently running a 1060 6GB, and I have seen a good deal on a Palit Jetstream 1070ti recently, second hand but with warranty. Is this worth the upgrade? If so, is this a good manufacturer?

    Thank you!

    Build Critique / GPU Suggestions

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:22 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Primarily playing games - Witcher 3 (modded), Skyrim (modded), Halo, Cyberpunk, Tomb Raider, other AAA games.
I will also use it to log in to work remotely via Remote Desktop Connection with 3-4 monitors - I am currently using four 24" 1080p monitors. When gaming I will only be using 1-2 monitors with the others disconnected.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1080p, 144hz, high detail

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Shooting for $1,100 max. I have purchased all of the parts except the GPU (can spend max of about $400). I do not need to spend it all if it is not necessary.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

US - will have access to Microcenter when I am visiting my parents in the last week of December.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This is my first build. I've purchased all of the components for the build except for the GPU. Nothing has been opened and everything is still within the return window. I'm looking for a critique of the parts I've purchased and suggestions for a GPU. I'm torn between buying an EVGA GTX 1660 Super for about $230, a Powercolor Red Dragon/Sapphire Pulse RX 5700 for about $340-360, or a Powercolor/Sapphire RX 5700 XT for about $400-430. I'm currently thinking that I'll go with the 1660 Super and then upgrade to an RX 5700 XT (hopefully at a lower price point) when the next round of GPU's are released. I'm also hesitant to go AMD due to the software issues as this is my first build. Hopefully this is enough information and I got the formatting correct. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

Any suggestions for my first build?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 10:21 AM PST

I'm going to be ordering parts soon, but just want to double check everything. I'm mainly going to be video editing. Not professional, but I have a drone and a couple gopros that shoot 4k. I will also be doing some gaming, but mostly just editing. I am completely clueless about PC building in general, and don't even really know what overclocking is, so it's unlikely I'll be doing it.

My budget is about $1000-$1200 give or take. I really like the looks and size of the case I chose, but I'd be willing to get a mid level case of it means a far better system for close to the same price.

Looking to build my FIRST pc ever and.......i need a little help :)

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:19 PM PST

So I have been rocking this laptop since 2017 and it works great because I travel for work a lot and needed a good gaming laptop to game on when it my hotel. But now I'm home and would like a desktop so I can game/stream/edit videos so I don't have to keep using my small laptop. The thing is that I want the same performance, if not better than this pc so i can do all these things.

    Laptop Specs:

    • Razer Blade 2017 14" V6
    • intel i7-7700hq @ 2.80GHz
    • DDR4 16GB
    • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060

Now, I want something that I can play game/stream/edit videos on something with these specs or better if need be. I would like to connect to 2 144Hz monitor. I need help picking all the right parts so they are compatible.

I have seen a lot of builds that recommend the a ryzen 5 chipset but I thought that would be going backwards compared to what I currently have. I have been racking my brain on going with team red(ryzen) or team blue(Intel). I hear I don't need more than 12GB of ram for gaming but what about when I edit videos? Can/should I upgrade to 32GB now or in the future? I feel like if I can at least know which CPU to choose the rest will come easy. Should I use m.2 for memory to save space and for speed?

Can it NOT sound like my laptop which sounds like its taking off to space on the next spacex launch? Gets loud when gaming and sucks for streaming with the laptop right near my mic.

Can you guys help me build a future proof desktop that won't go over the cost of this laptop from when I first purchased it. Any and all help would be appreciated!

My budget is $2,000, This would be a complete build and I have no monitors so those suggestions would be great as well.

2TB NVMe drives with high endurance (>1000 TBW)?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:19 PM PST

I do a lot of video file transfers and want a high endurance NVMe SSD. I know I should stay away from QLC, and inexpensive options like the Intel 660p have quite low endurance. Any suggestions?

    Help with monitor

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:41 PM PST

    I bought a 1440p, 144hz monitor but on the menu it says 1440p, 60hz

    https://m.imgur.com/a/SPX1mnN

I'm not sure if I was sent a different monitor than the one I ordered or am I missing something. I can get it over 60hz if I take the v-sync off in the game settings.

    Will this work well?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:08 PM PST

First I would like to say thank you for clicking on this post.

I will be using this PC for mostly gaming and light word processing (just for uni and stuff). I want to play games such as Rocket League, Hitman 2, Overwatch, Borderlands 3, PvZ BFN and other similar games. I would like to be able to play these at 1440p 144 Fps (I know some such as Borderlands will never get to that but it is my aim for most games).

I share a room and so it is important for me that it is very quiet so I have tried to build that into my budget and maxing out the ones I can get). My total budget is £1500 and that includes everything in the part list which is here.

Thank you to all those that reply and if you have any questions feel free to leave them below! Thanks!

Compatibility between motherboard and power supply

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST

Through the help of the redditor from my previous post, I was able to almost finalize the parts I will buy. However, I switched to a similar motherboard with wifi included as ethernet is not currently an option for me right now (Router and Modem on a different floor from PC location). But there is an new compatibility note in pcpartpicker stating that the motherboard has an additional 4-pin connector that the power supply does not. I was wondering if this is a severe issue or if I can go by with it just fine. Which power supply or motherboard would be better to switch to if needed? Thanks

My 6 Year Old Intel Xeon Processor Seems to be Doing Fine, am I Killing my Upgraded Build by Running Triple A Games/ Premiere Pro?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST

I have recently upgraded to a 1660 Ti Ultra Gaming, and my friend who I always build with said my Haswell Xeon E3-1230 v3 (4 cores, 8 threads) will still be fine. I have 16GB of ram, and a 1TB SSD. I know that older processors are having a tough time these days, but will my processor get by fine with these current specs? I played some casual games/DOOM, and things seemed to run smoothly. My friend is encouraging me to push it further, but I don't want to destroy the build.

    Any thoughts?

If I made it to bios does that mean the pc is working fine?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:58 PM PST

I've built a gaming pc with my cousins helping me a few years back, and have upgraded a few parts. Since then, I've forgotten how to build a pc from scratch.

My mom wanted me to use some of my old parts to build her a pc, and after a few days, I'm done! My pc has made it to the bios screen (Yet to install windows) does this mean the pc is working fine and the build is successful?

Friend's newly built PC not working as intended

So my friend bought a pc to assemble and has some issues. His gpu doesn't show up in either bios or task manager, and his gpu fan gets super fast. Fps hits about 15 in lol. Seemed like gpu is connected correctly. Also, only one of the two DP ports to the GPU works and not the one to the motherboard. Got no clue how to fix that. Appreciate any help!

Umpteenth build feedback and some questions about PMW fans

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:44 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Intended use: Mainly gaming, some light statistics and coding perhaps, but this certainly isn't the focus.

Performance: Looking for 1440p/144hz and willing to tune back some settings for multiplayer, would like decent framerates for singleplayer games. Maybe dip my toe into overclocking in the future as well, but no experience as of yet.

    my main questions

    1. Do you see ways to optimize this noise-wise. It doesn't have to be dead-silent, but I'm done with gaming on a yet engine (my current laptop). Willing to consider a different case, as long as it doesn't choke the build completely. Willing to consider different coolers as well (is the hyper212 silent?).

    2. How do PWM fans work? Is it worth shelling out for them to better control fan noise? Would I need extra fan controllers and hardware/software to use them?

Budget would be around 1100 without monitor/peripherals (can get those discounted through work).

    1. Does the red devil fit inside a meshify C mini with front fans?

    Thanks in advance!

my friend is trying a i7-8700 bulid, Can anyone tell what the model of this "i7-8700" cpu actually is?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:23 AM PST

One of my friends received this funny looking i7-8700 from China, despite it said "8700" on the IHS, it doesn't boot when put into a z390 chipset board, he suspects it could be a fake one with an i7-8700 IHS. Visually, maybe it's a 6th gen CPU from the looks of the capacitors? thoughts? What CPU would be compatible z390 board?

Ryzen 5 3600x as hot as Jennifer underload.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:22 PM PST

Man my ryzen 5 3600x run a whopping 91 Celcius when I use prime 95.

Here's the computer I'm working with:

Ryzen 5 3600x, B450 Tomahawk Max Bios ver 3.20 with PBO, A XMP enabled.

Cooling: 5 noctua redux fans, CPU Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Black

GPU: Rx 5700 xt, RAM: T Force 3200hz ddr4 ram.

They are recently installed and I have no idea why my CPU run that hot when I already installed an aftermarket cooler.

For drivers here what I installed: Adrenalin 19.0.2, AMD Chipset for AM4 socket, Ryzen Master. They all running on the most recently update version of Windows 10.

Man I just don't know what to do. From modifying my power plan according to this post to putting my pc on the coolest part of my room. And I'm staying in a place where's it's -3 Celcius outside!

I don't know what to do? Should I open up the cooler and reinstall it?

I removed the stickers on the cooler before I installed, I did the grain thermal paste method, I screwed in the cooler alternatively at opposite corners.

I want to know if this is normal temperature or is something wrong with my system guys.

note: I've been trying to find answers online for the past 48 hours. The results I get so far are to install cinabench r15, heaven benchmark, prime 95, run stress tests and report temp. I did all of that. What steps should I take to reduce the CPU temperature.

    Upgrade path from I5-4590

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:22 PM PST

Hi! So previously I purchased a system with an I5 4590 and have slowly upgraded my machine. Currently I have

    GPU: Gtx 1080 Founders

    CPU: I5-4590

Mobo: Non overclockable 4th gen mobo

Power supply: some 550w gold certified

I've seen a lot of options for 4690k's for sale on hardware swap for around 80 dollars but I'm not sure if thats worth it or if I should move on to a newer platform, I have seen as well some 6600k's going for a decent price with an overclockable motherboard. Ideally I'm looking for a system that can keep up with my GPU in open world games like Red Dead 2. Thanks

    mATX case recommendations

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 07:24 AM PST

I'm planning on building a "new" PC for my mom and need some recommendations regarding a nice microATX Case

So since I'm planning to replace my current Desktop, i5-6600 B150M (micro ATX), with an AMD build in the near future I'm thinking I can use my old CPU and Board to build a new Desktop for my Mom.

She doesn't need much, she uses her Desktop mostly for office work (Writer/Calc) and sometimes streaming some Netflix.

So I'm mainly looking for recommendations on a nice case. Since the board is microATX I'm thinking something nice and small might be good. Thinking about either a Mini-Tower or a Cube.

    Needed Features:

    * Capacity for at least one 2.5" and one 3,5" Drive

    * Slot for an Optical drive (yes my mom still uses Discs ;D

    Nice to have:

    * SD-Card slot/possibility to install an SD-Card reader

So any recomendations on those cases or links to check out?

    I'm buying in Germany.

Serious issue with new AMD build - can't figure out whats wrong! please help

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 12:37 PM PST

    My build - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ph7cHB

Around 2 months ago I decided to do my first PC build. Everything was going nicely until a couple of weeks ago when I started getting the occasional BSoD "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" , which was normally after booting up Windows. Over the next week or two this became more frequent until it would happen every time I turned on my PC. After trying to fix it by updating my BIOS to the latest version and updating drivers, it was at the point where I couldn't even boot windows, and would get the "CRITCAL_PROCESS_DIED" BSoD.

After 3 or 4 failed attempts due to crashing, I manged to install windows again from USB, yet it was still happening, even in safe mode without networking. So i tried memtest86 3/4 times to see if it was due to faulty RAM, even doing each stick at a time but there were no errors. I've also tried resetting the CMOS, installing windows on a different M.2, different RAM sticks, different GPU but nothing seems to be changing. It just crashes over and over, more frequently each time to the point where windows wont even boot and I have to try a clean install.

Using BlueScreenView to look at the memory dump files, they pretty much all showed the same thing:

    Bug Check String: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Bug Check Code: 0x0000000a

    Caused By Driver: ntoskrnl.exe

Don't really know what else to try, and since it's my first build i'm still learning as I go. I want to test the CPU but i'm worried about swapping it out as I don't want to risk damaging anything, or make anything worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
