Why are webcams still terrible in 2021 ?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:30 AM PDT

    Hello

For many years I've been living without using webcams, but since covid hitted I felt the need to get one become I had more video calls with others people than ever.

So I started looking into webcams, and I'm just speechless about how bad they are to this day.

Even a brand new StreamCam from logitech (released in 2020) selling for 150€ doesn't match the quality of my Xioami smarthphone that coast the same price (and obivously can achieve many other things than simply recording).

Everything seems extremely overpriced, low quality etc and I simply don't understand why this market didn't evolved that much considering the fact that streaming is extremely popular and people are very interested in good quality webcams.

    CRT on high Hz?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 12:12 AM PDT

I'm super interested, yet still a newbie when it comes to older hardware on a modern rig and I've heard about overclocking a CRT monitor to run on higher framerate, but haven't gotten the answer to the VGA max Hz question. How would it be possible to bypass the VGA bottleneck, since I hear it only goes up to 60Hz, or would the monitor overclocking be a valid option only for monitors with a built-in DVI?

If using nanometers isn’t an objective measurement anymore (since the start of FinFETs) what’s the best alternative?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 07:01 AM PDT

I have heard that transistor count is an objective measurement but it does have complications because which part of the CPU are we referring to?

Regardless, I'd like to hear your thoughts, also if you work at the semiconductor industry, your opinion would be valued.

"Un"common use casesof graphics processing units

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 12:58 PM PDT

    Hello all,

TL;DR --> Besides playing graphically intensive video games, mining crypto or video editing what are the other end-user use cases of GPUs?

Context --> I recently bought a newish laptop model and it comes with a dedicated GPU which is actually not a bad one either. I've not been using Windows for some years and I stopped "gaming" even further back in time. I don't do videos/photos to have the need to edit such media. And finally I bought the laptop as my mainly driver to use for both work and "leisure?" so I don't think I will be mining crypto with it.

In the past what I used to do is isolate the dedicated GPU (assuming my CPU has an integrated one) from the host OS and use it for a Windows virtual machine to play some games but I ended up booting that VM like 2 times in the year..

My work and personal use of the computer is mainly in command line interface or lightweight GUI applications, hence why I see it as an overkill having a dedicated GPU for my host OS. I guess I can always simply install the driver on my host OS and just enjoy a "better" experience but if it's not mandatory, why waste the resources.

That being said for an end-user what are some of the alternative use cases a GPU can be applied for?
