    Simple Questions - August 08, 2021

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Quite possibly the dumbest question ever.

What are your dream office enhancements?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:56 AM PDT

I am fortunate to be in the position to design my office/pcgaming room from the studs up. What are some quality of life items I should be thinking about in regards to my gaming PC and my work docking station?

The first thing I thought of was asking them to put a whole bunch of outlets along the wall to support all my monitors/computer. Is there such a thing as built in "surge protectors" so I don't have to have a big block on my desk anymore?

What else have people done to make a gaming pc room awesome that I would regret not doing later? Thanks in advance!

Is it worth it to upgrade a 2600 to a 5600X?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:49 AM PDT

I have a 2070, and 16gb 3200mzh ram, would it be worth it to upgrade the CPU? I get decent performance on most of my games but I'll be moving for school here soon and have a decent paycheck coming, so would it be worth it to upgrade or would I just be bottlenecked by the 2070?

Those with a triple monitor setup - Are all of your monitors the same size and resolution? What does your setup consist of?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 01:15 PM PDT

I currently have a fairly janky triple monitor setup. My middle/main monitor is 27" 1440p/144hz, and my two side monitors are spare 23" 1080p displays that are used for secondary programs.

I want to upgrade to a proper triple-arm setup that has identically-sized 27" monitors, but I'm on the fence about whether they should have the same specs as my current main monitor (1440p/144hz), or whether I should just go 1080p/60hz and save like $500.

For what it's worth, I don't plan on using all the monitors as a single display for gaming, although it might be a fun gimmick in some cases.

I have an R5 3600 CPU, a 5700 XT GPU, and 32 gb of RAM. If you want any other specs, please let me know.

I'm also looking for some monitor suggestions. I have an Acer-XV272U, so I'd prefer something aesthetically similar

Just found the first graphics card I ever bought

    Is a 650w psu enough for a 3070ti?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:46 AM PDT

My current build is a Ryzen 3700x, 16gb of ram clocked at 3200mhz and a 5700xt. My 650w power supply is plenty for that but I have a 3070ti on the way and I'm hoping I won't need to get a new psu. Anyone have any experience with the card?

Sometimes I can boot to bios but usually I get a no signal on the monitor

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:32 AM PDT

I've finished the actual building part of my pc and I'm trying to get the os but I usually get the no signal or if I get the bios and reset I go back to no signal. It gets worse if I plug in the usb. Idk what to do

Update: Pulled the Mobo Battery for 5 minutes and that seemed to fix it.

Possibly dumb question about cpu connector

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 10:51 PM PDT

I am building my first pc right now. I had a bit of a scare when my 8 pin cpu connector from my psu didn't fit into my motherboard, but then I finally realised that it splits in half. So when I plug one half in, what do I do with the other? Do I just let it dangle there?

My cpu is a ryzen 5 5600x and my psu is 650w if that makes a difference

Sorry if this is a really dumb question

    30A PSU rail enough for a 3070?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:56 AM PDT

I'm building a PC right now and have my eyes on a MSI MPG A650GF, which after cashback ends up at decent price.

However, this is a multi-rail PSU and each of the VGA rails have 30A of max current (360W). Will 30A be enough to power a 3070 FE without shutdowns or should I go with something else?

    Thanks

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

So according to Ryzen Master my CPU temp is hovering around 68C while just sitting on chrome atm typing up this post. My clock speed is around 2.5k-4.4k fluctuationg and the voltage is at 1.47ish. According to Armoury Crate the Frequency is at an almost constant 4740 with temps around 58C.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I've followed the advice here https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/db60m3/the_zen_2_faq/ And changed the Global C-state Control, Power Supply Idle Control, CPPC, CPPC Preferred Cores settings as instructed but the last two options were not in my motherboard settings. I have changed no other options in bios or anything.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Replace this text with your answer.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Thank you for any help with this. I don't mind the noise or anything but I just want to make sure I'm taking care of my rig properly and not sending it to an early grave with it running to high/hot.

Need some new eyes to look at build before pulling the trigger

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 04:37 AM PDT

Looking to build a PC for 1440p 144hz gaming. These are the parts I picked:

    • Case: BE QUIET! Pure Base 500
    • PSU: BE QUIET! System Power 9 700W
    • Motherboard: ASUS Prime X570-P
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
    • CPU Cooler: BE QUIET! Dark Rock 4
    • RAM: G.SKILL Aegis DIMM Kit 32GB, DDR4-3000
    • GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X (Cheapest in my area)

    Are there any obvious flaws?

Can someone review/critique/sanity-check my build idea?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 12:31 PM PDT

I am planning to pull the trigger on an upgrade to my current (almost 7yo) machine in the next few days. I never spend money, so am looking for something a little decadent/luxurious to treat myself with, and hopefully have a decent level of future-proof.

I plan to use this for gaming and programming with some multithreaded applications.

I don't intend to upgrade my graphics card for now, due to the current price environment, so I will continue using my 1070 for now. I would probably upgrade to a 3070 or 3080.

What do you think? Are there any obvious/non-obvious issues I have missed?

PCPartPicker listed a couple of warnings about the USB headers for my case and motherboard, but I presume a 3.2 Gen 1 USB-C port can connect with a Gen 2 header, right?

It also mentioned about RAM/cooler clearance, but I think this will be fine with the AIO cooler?

Is NVMe good for a boot drive?

Any advice, tweak suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any advice for a home NAS build please...

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 09:33 AM PDT

Hi, I am looking to build a NAS with around 10-12TB of useable storage. Mainly just for file sharing but occasionally running a virtual machine and some light transcoding. (nothing too intense)

Some of the files being backed up will be photos/videos for paying clients. (I'm a professional photographer) I was thinking about using truenas core but wondered if there is any other options you'd recommend. I was thinking about using a raid 6/z2 configuration, does this sound suitable?

Any advice on specs for the build would also be greatly appreciated.

I do have limited experience with truenas core having been using it on an old pc to store unimportant files.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Feedback on spec for gaming PC

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 02:18 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have not built a PC in 15 years, so it would be much appreciated if I could get some feedback on this gaming PC I intend to build. My goal is to have a PC that can play all games on good/high settings and be a foundation for future upgrades so that I can have it for a long time.

First of all, can you see anything that seems off with this build?
Second, with the current GPU shortage, it might be tricky to get hold of the RTX 3060 for a reasonable price. What do you recommend of either buying a lower-tier GPU or just try to find a different but similar GPU?

    What Component
Case Fractal Design Meshify 2 Compact Black TG Light Tint
Motherboard ASUS ROG Strix B550-F GAMING
    Processor AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
    RAM Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 16GB
GPU Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Vision OC (LHR)
    SSD Kingston A2000 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD
Power Cooler Master MWE Bronze V2 750W

    Cheers!
