Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Getting a Gaming Keyboard and Mouse as a Bday gift - have about 200-300 to spend

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 03:56 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

So getting a family member a wireless gaming mouse and keyboard for their birthday - but I have no clue what is considered good these days. He definitely wants a mouse with quite a few shortcut keys on it + a sturdy keyboard, both wireless. Keyboard doesnt have to be mechanical, but it can be if you guys think its worth it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a keyboard mouse combo or individual keyboard and mouse that will come out to around 150-250, even up to 300 bucks?

thanks for any help, I appreciate it

    Power Supply for 36 HDDs

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 07:58 AM PDT

Do you guys know any Power Supply that has a lot of Sata output? I need to power 36 HDDs, I got the motherboard that is a normal PC motherboard on steroids, has 42 Sata ports, but the only power is PSU. My knowledge of PSU is about normal PSU for PC up to 1200W, but those have 16 SATA port max, I was thinking of getting a spliter for each, and that doubles it to 32. Any better solutions?

    Is a 500W psu enough for a 3070 and ryzen 5600x?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 09:52 AM PDT

PC part picker has estimated wattage as 399W. Also will be using Kraken Z63, don't know if that affects wattage much. Is having 100W spare enough? I don't really plan on changing much for the build in the future

    Should i Upgrade from 3700x to 5600x ?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 10:25 AM PDT

    Hello Guys,

someone wants to buy my 3700x for 200 Euros and the 5600x only costs 250Euros so i have to add 50Euros to buy it. do you think its worth it? What i can tell you with my 3700x is that i had bad luck with the silicon lottery and i can not overlock it more then 4.1GHz i am just using pbo.

    I currently use the 3700x with a 2070 Super.

Will i have better perfomance and fps? or is it not necessary?

Is it worth it to get a 3060 instead of a 3080

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 09:34 AM PDT

I have been folowing a Twitter account called stock drops and I found a 3060 for 529.99. Should I buy this one instead? How much performance drop should I expect from the 3080?

    Thank you!

Which ssd to get from samsung.com. 870 qvc 1 tb or 980 1tb?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 12:57 PM PDT

I send in my Samsung 850 pro for rma and they told me it can't be repaired. They will send me $120 store credit instead. For that I can easily get 1tb 870 qvc or a 1tb 980. Which would I choose?

Why is the bottom fan louder than all other fans in my PC?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 11:19 AM PDT

Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

Looking online I don't seem much discussion of this. The closest I found was https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/why-is-my-bottom-intake-fan-so-loud.190515/

I've just installed 4 new fans in my PC case. A component list of my build is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/erotemic/saved/#view=WKpmD3

The case is a Phanteks Enthoo Pro Tempered Glass ATX Full Tower Case, which comes with 2 stock fans. A front intake fan and a back exhaust fan. I was debugging an overheating issue and I figured I may as well just install several more fans. So I bought 4 Noctua A14 PWM chromax.black.swap 82.52 CFM 140 mm Fans. I installed 1 as an additional front intake, 2 as top exhaust, and 1 as a bottom intake.

The issue is the bottom fan is much louder than all of the others.

At first I thought it was an issue with the bottom fan installation. The top and the front fans were easy to install, but to get the bottom one in there I had to remove the bottom support for the hard drive cage and I had to expand 2 of the screw holes with a metal drill before I could secure the fan on the bottom. This is despite the manual indicating that a 140mm fan is compatible on the bottom: http://www.phanteks.com/assets/manuals/PH-ES614PTG_Western.pdf (see page 11).

But it isn't an installation issue. Nor is it that one of the fans is louder than the other. To experiment I completely removed the HDD cage so the front and bottom fans were completely exposed. I unscrewed the new front fan and the bottom fan and listened to them outside the case while the power was on. They both sounded the same.

I then placed each of the fans on the bottom of the case, and the moment I placed either of them on the bottom, the noise got much louder. The locations where they are touching the case are padded, so I don't think that's it. The only major difference between that location and everywhere else on the case is that there is a cage-like metal gridding over the intake whereas the other fan locations are more open at the intake locations.

Is the noise because of the metal cage? Or is it some other reason? Is there anything I can do to reduce the noise levels to that of the other fans? (Should I just cut out the area so it is completely open sans the mesh covering? I to have dogs, so keeping fur out of my PC is a real concern).

PC still crashing after CPU, MoBo, PSU upgrade

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 11:15 AM PDT

I upgraded the CPU and MoBo first and that's when it started. It's crashing when under load, aka starting up a game. Temps are normal, so I replaced the PSU. Got a Corsair RM850x Gold. Still restarting on its own. I've reseated the ram, gpu, cpu, and cpu cooler as well as checked all connections. Drivers and BIOS is up to date. Definitely no bent or broken pins on the CPU. Cpu is a 5600x, mobo is an Asus rog strix B550-F, and an RX580. I'm pulling my hair out, any help is appreciated!

    K39 5 Litre travel pc

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 08:33 AM PDT

I wanted something under 5 Litres and able to carry around with a little bit of power behind in it, I've never cared for RGB but for this build I wanted the machine to glow and I found small usb 2.0 controlled magnetic RGB strip by Asrock and they fit on top of the psu perfectly and really illuminate the GPU well.

The build was straight forward except the power button had to be flipped upside and down and installed after I put in the GPU which was nerve wracking because I thought the case wasn't going to work out. Also I used the Loque ghost Riser that is PCI-E 4.0 its thinner and I think will allow more airflow out the top over the heavy thick plastic one that was included with the case. Also I have some spacers on the GPU side that are 1mm behind the panel due to the gpu fan making slight contact. quality control of this case wasn't great but usable i'm debating switching to a Velka 3 for that reason. I haven't had time to benchmark anything yet but will update at some point.

    RGB glow https://imgur.com/a/GyH4qzX

ASRock DESKMINI LED CABLE ARGB Strip for DeskMini Series is what I'm using for RGB on the gpu side- they're meant for the Deskmini style of cases but work perfectly, they're short and really bright they plug into a usb 2.0 plug and I've used usb 2.0 extenders to daisy chain up to 3 with no issues- software control isn't the greatest from asrock so I just leave as color shift. I replaced the Noctua fan with a ID-Cooling 92mm Slim Fan w/ ARGB that was bought from J-hack, its RGB is connected directly to the motherboards 3 pin 5V ARGB but I can't get it to change colors on RGB fusion software from gigabyte but need to mess with it some more.

I lucked into the short 3060 from amazon UK they've been keeping stock shipped and sold by amazon and ship to the US but still has tariff and ITX tax- came out to 800$ usd for the card but was still cheaper then ebay. PCPartPicker Part List

I Feel Older and Slower: The Great Build Halt of `21

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 02:14 PM PDT

Made a post the other day, got some positive vibes, so I think I'll keep it up.

Day 1 of the build went pretty well, although without the CPU I dunno that I'd consider it anything but pre-build. Regardless, it turns out I needed that extra time to figure out what I was doing, all over again.

Day 2, THE CPU ARRIVES! *queue the angelic chorus*. UPS decides to deliver it at 8 PM, which I guess is better than waiting until today, but I still had ants in the pants to get started.

All the CPU components, sans video card, are pre-installed, the CPU drops in, the heatsink takes some fiddling but basically drops right in, everything is going great. That should have been my first clue. 9 standoffs, 8 screws later (the center standoff is just a post and I need to remember to figure out what that's all about), the mobo is in the case! GPU install is basically drag an drop, get the fans plugged in, run the front IO cables and plug them in. Time for POWER! Unwind the ATX cables that came with the PSU, get a sinking feeling. These are awful damn short.

Long story short, the PSU I've got, which is rated exactly to the specs I want, typically goes in a micro-ITX build. It's got an adapter plate, so it'll mount and WILL WORK with my build, but the cables are just too short. The first true burn of the build. There's always at least one, something you bought that just isn't ready out of the box, and/or it just plain won't work or isn't what you thought it was.

You hate to see it, and I'm a little wary since I haven't even gotten a POST yet, so there could be more landmines in the near future.

I ended up ordering new cables, I suppose I could have gone to a brick and mortar, but it's not worth the drive to take a crapshoot on their inventory. The upshot is I'll have two lengths of ATX cables to continue with, and I gotta crack the case back open and look at cabling again, because I hit a wall on the ATX cable and bagged it for the evening.

It's a rats nest right now, and cable management will come later, once I know how everything is going to be routed. If the smaller cables are going to be useless, I might just try and find them a new home.

I thought I was going to be all the way done with software reinstalls at this point and I'm still stuck in assembly, and have to wait on yet another part in the mail. Pushed an entire week. Cool thing happened though, I'm older, I'm wiser, and it's just not a big deal. Disappointing, but not a big deal in the long run. I got the best replacement part for the job I need done, solved a snag without compromising and didn't spend an arm and a leg in overruns in the process. I younger version of me would be driving around looking for any shitty cable that would do the job right now, and the build would suffer for it. Hindsight, I made two mistakes: I didn't check specifications on the cable lengths, which weren't listed on the retail website, I had to go to the manufacturer website to get that information, and I did have some lead time to at least open the cables up and do a rough mock up. Could have found the problem 2 days ago. Oh well, it's a hobby, not a job, and I don't have a manager breathing down my neck about it.

Moving forward, I've got two things I've got to keep in mind. The build halted at internal wiring, so I need to make sure I'm loaded up on coffee when the new cables get here and that I verify each components wiring again before POST. Second, since I didn't even get to attempt a POST yet, I'm not 100% that the CPU is correctly installed and working. Just little mental notes so I can pick up where I left off without leaving myself a landmine in the future or an improperly installed component that isn't working at full efficiency because it was installed half-assed.

Needless to say, my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined, but I think it'll be OK.

As an aside, since I find that having another pair of eyes on a project, so to speak, is valuable; what would you guys have done to solve the problem?

    The solutions were essentially:

Get a new PSU, B+M or Online

Get extension cables, B+M or Online

    Get new cables, Online

Would your build process have avoided this snag? If so, how and why?

My plan for my next rig

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 11:04 AM PDT

So far, I've only built myself two rigs, both of which were mid-range at the time. So, I have no experience with building something high end. Yeah, I'm a masochist who decided to try to build a high end rig in this market. Go figure.

This project is for a few months down the line. Only after this place is sold and I've moved into my new place. Between that and problems with availability of certain parts, it's probably going to take a while. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if some components were changed simply because newer, better versions came out in the meanwhile.

Suggestions are welcome. If you feel that any component should be replaced with something better, I'll be happy to get your thoughts on it. Conversely, if you see a way to cut cost, with absolutely zero compromise with regard to the build's performance, I'll be happy to hear them.

There's a lot more RAM here than I'll actually need, but I'm fine with that.

    1st PC Build

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 10:44 AM PDT

So i was generously gifted a 3090, a friend of mine was mining with it but stopped recently due to the recent EIP 1559 London Fork.

So i decided to make my first gaming/productivity PC to last me for a while, but i'd like to have people's input and let me know what they think of the build and if there are any components that might have issues or have better alternatives.
I've used pcpartpicker to check if everything is compatible and the only issue noted was the possibility of a BIOS update needed.

    So here is the build:

    GPU- Zotac 3090 rtx

    CPU- AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core

    CPU Cooler- DeepCool AS500 Plus

    RAM- Kingston 32GB HyperX Fury 2x 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RGB

SSD- Western Digital Black SN850 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

    Peripheral fans - Corsair 2x 120mm ML120 PWM

PSU- EVGA G5 Supernova 1000W 80 Plus Gold Modular

Case- Lian Li Lancool II Mesh

I'll be running the case with positive pressure by having only 1 exhaust fan (Corsair) and 3 intake fans.

I realize that the SDD is not even remotely close to enough memory and i will add a hard drive as well for storage, if anyone has any recommendations on hard drives they would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance everyone.
    Cheers

Would you sacrifice size for looks in an ITX Case?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 10:43 AM PDT

I'm developing an NR200 competitor and currently have been able to fit space for 4 240mm radiators and maximum height of 160mm for air coolers. I have a cool exterior design reminiscent of the Mjolnir and Razer Core, but it comes at the cost of 1.5 extra litres. Do you think I should sacrifice the looks of the case to fit in exactly the size of the NR200?

Motherboard options for 5600G-only ITX build?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 10:42 AM PDT

Right now I have my sights on ASRock A520M-ITX/ac with the Ryzen 5 5600G for my mini-ITX APU-only mini-pc build.

    1. I do not plan on adding any discrete GPU/ The build uses a case that is too small to add any GPU.
    2. I have already bought the case to go with my build (Inwin Chopin 150W) as it has a longer delivery time (shipped from outside my country). I am re-using my Micron Crucial P1 that I previously used in my gaming rig before switching out.
    3. Use case is light video editing and medium office productivity tasks.
    4. Display output is Ultrawide 1440p (3440x1440) and upto 100Hz. Displayport is preferred, but I am guessing HDMI 2.0 is still enough to fully support it.
    5. Needs onboard wifi/ +m.2 Wifi card.

Along with the above components, 3600Mhz 8Gx2 and NOCTUA NH-L9a-AM4 Cooler . Shipping address is in South Korea.

I am asking this question as it seems the A520 mini-itx motherboard is a bit overkill for the build I am going for (don't need super fancy pcie x16 connector, don't need gaming oriented motherboard features, don't need a motherboard that looks cool as the case hides it).

*Links are from newegg to support english. I will do the best I can for prices in my country.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2021 07:30 AM PDT

What do y'all think, I'm looking for a gpu under $300 USD and the best cards can find in my budget living where I am are used 580's. Idk if that is bad bc tbh, I haven't really been keeping up with the gpu situation. Should I just take the offers, or do y'all got any advice because my deadline for buying is at the end of the month.
