Does the CPU take a whole clock cycle to do an operation? Posted: 08 Jul 2021 12:50 AM PDT If I ask the CPU to do "1+1" (which I'm assuming takes a single clock cycle) does the CPU core know the answer before the clock cycle is finished? If so, what percentage of the time is a "busy" CPU core actually "idle"? How much does this vary per operation? CLARIFICATION: I know the division operation has several "sub-operations" (not sure if this is the right terminology). What I'm asking, "Is the CPU idle after a sub-operation within a single clock cycle?" As in, is it possible for the CPU to be finished with a sub-operation before the end of a clock cycle? Or does the CPU simply finish the clock cycle whenever the sub-operation is finished, so you see a momentary increase in the GHz of the CPU core? [link] [comments] |
