[Mod Announcement] On PC Component Supply information / news posts

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:52 AM PDT

    Hello all,

Recently there had been another surge of posts regarding mining GPUs being sold off / Customs halting smugglers - While it is about PC components, it is not /r/hardware material.

A news piece about X amount of CPU / GPU being seized by X country's customs is not really post worthy, in the same way the (for example), a single PC cafe shutting down or a single Best Buy going out of business. There is nothing in it that could spark hardware-related discussion, which is the subreddit's goal.

    What is not acceptable:

Example A: ASUS ultra-rare GUNDAM non-LHR cards end up in mining rigs set up by Vietnamese retailers

Example B: Smugglers fail to outsmart China's customs by strapping Intel CPUs to their bodies

P.S. This is not to say these website are blacklisted, it just depends on the specific content.

For more information, you can refer to this post.

    What is acceptable (Examples):

    https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/og3ns9/graphics_card_prices_distribution_battles_over/

These are original and useful information on the PC market, and thus they are allowed in the subreddit.

If you have any opinion / further suggestion, please leave it in the comments below.

Hypothetical: What if Apples M1X (or named M2X) leads AMD and Intel by the same margin iPhones lead Android?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 11:51 PM PDT

Let's focus on the laptop market, where 70% of the PC market is.

Currently, the iPhone leads Android significantly in Geekbench and similar benchmarks:

    • Single-core: +59% (986 vs 1574)
    • Multi-core: +21% (3243 vs 3919)
    • ML Acceleration: +101% (1064 vs 2148)

On top of the performance leads, Apple's laptops will probably have 20+ hours of battery life, run extremely cool and quiet, and in an ultra-compact chassis.

    Would you consider switching?
