How I fixed Windows not recognizing SSD in Disk Management, but BIOS does

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:52 PM PDT

When installing a new SSD a few years ago, my BIOS recognized the empty SSD but Windows didn't (doesn't even show up as unformatted, it just isn't in Disk Management at all), and all tutorials I found didnt work. The solution I found was use the BIOS to boot to the empty SSD, fail, then go back to Windows which will now recognize the SSD as unformatted. Then format the SSD and it will work. Hoping some random person in 8 years will stumble upon this while Googling and solve their problem.

EDIT: Operating system was Windows 8.1, ssd was 2TB WD SATA SSD

    Hey y'all,

I swapped out my 5900x for a 5950x and now I'm being taken straight to bios, nothing takes me to my desktop. I'm trying to find a resolution, but I'm not getting anything. Help! 🥺

Are Ryzen 5 5600x supposed to be this hot on the stock cooler?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 09:38 AM PDT

I finished building my first ever pc super late last night and couldn't help myself, I played Minecraft with shaders just to test the pc, after I installed hwinfo though I noticed my CPU hit temps of 85 degrees.. it startled me, to be honest. my laptop hits that lol.

after going to sleep, today I woke up and found a thread saying I should limit voltage to 1.2V and clocks to 4.5ghz which surprisingly brought my CPU temps down to 73 degrees (although hwinfo says my CPU hit 81.1 degrees max at some point between siege and Minecraft)

so.. are these temps normal for the stock cooler? I did struggle really hard to get it installed... I had to press really hard and I'm still not sure it's totally in all the way, even if it wasn't wobbling. that thing is terrifying to install lmao

    build:

    Ryzen 5 5600x (Stock cooler)

    Dual Geforce RTX 2060 EVO

    MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk

Crucial Ballistics 16 GB 3600Mhz RAM

    Corsair 4000D Airflow

    Corsair RM750x PSU

What should I upgrade/update in my 2017 PC?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 11:09 AM PDT

Its been almost exactly 4 years. I'm tired of my current case and looking to switch to a Meshify 2. I like the aesthetic, airflow, and features a lot better. I also dislike my assorted RGBs as I have 4 different programs to control them (CAM, iCue, AURA RGB, and ASRRGBLED. The lights in my case fans recently stopped working. I game (Warframe and thinking about Star Citizen) and do work/school. Given this, what would you change or upgrade? What would you do to better align the RGB under fewer programs?

    Current build:

    Case: NZXT S340 Elite

    Mobo: Asrock X370 Taichi

    CPU: R7 1700x

    Cooler: CRYORIG H7

    GPU: ROG STRIX GTS 1080

    RAM: GForce Skill Flare X 2x8gb 3200

Storage: Samsung 970 EVO 250gb, Samsung 500gb SSD

2 RGB Corsair fans and the two NZXT fans that came with the case

AIO fans always at idle speed

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 11:06 AM PDT

So this morning I did a stress test for my cpu. No throttling however the temps were around 85-90 degrees celcius. I noticed that the fans of the AIO were spinning really slow, at the same speed as when my Pc is idle. The 3 system fans however were at 100% even though the system temperature was at 30-35 degrees celcius. How can I invert this? Is there a better way than to set my AIO fans also as system fans?

    Pc having buffering/freezing issue

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 01:11 PM PDT

I just installed a wifi card into my motherboard and have been having issues where the computer and it's audio/video will freeze for a second, then it'll kick back to normal.

A further and larger issue is that after it does this, all usbs on the motherboard do not work until the computer is reset. However for some reason the bottom two still work despite this, it's just the ports above them.

Additionally, the wifi card, plugged into one of my 3 pcie slots, stops transferring Bluetooth and wifi to my computer until it is reset.

I took the mb and processor to micro center to be tested a few weeks ago for another reason and they said the pieces were fine. (Was a bad Ram stick, unrelated). Additionally, I'm fairly certain all my motherboard bios are up to date.

Does anyone know what could be causing this or how to fix it? Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to mention when you try to reset the computer through software it takes a very long amount of time and usually just gets stuck on the screen until you manually press the power button.

I've had this for a while I have the Asus prime b450m-a and am getting a aio but I wanna know how to disable the orange blinking light. I'm in the bios. Is it the aura menu. The aio is RGB and the orange light just doesn't fit that theme.

New build checkup for next 4-5 years

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 10:15 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

So for the last 20+ years I've been building my computers and I always go for something very good performance knowing I'll be more than happy for 4-5 years stretches. In 2009 I built an amazing i7-920 system, then in 2015 went for an i7-4790 build and now I'm due for a new workstation. Looks like I'm gonna buy AMD (omg really?). I don't follow much what is going on the desktop market until I have to upgrade and then I read a shit ton just to catch up on things. I have been reading for last couple months and it took me 3-4 months to convince myself 2020-2021 is an AMD era. Well, let's give it a shot then.

Build purpose : General work + video editing as a hobby + occasionnal gaming.

I will keep my old 1080 GPU until market improves. I already have two very nice 1440p monitors.

Money ain't an issue at all although I don't feel like buying super high performance for stuff or performance I won't really need. I'm not much of an overclocker (no experience really) and going from i7-4790 I'm sure the upgrade will seem so significant I'll be happy running stock.

I had trouble choosing the motherboard. After lot of Reddit reading, looks like B550 is plenty enough. I was concerned with Intel I-225v faulty ethernet chip and couldn't really wrap my mind going with Asus no knowing which chip version will be mounted on the board. There is no way my desktop won't be using LAN cable. Maybe I'm overthinking this issue. Anyway.

    Here's my picks :

    AMD Ryzen 9 5900x

MSI MPG B550 GAMING CARBON WIFI

    G.SKILL Trident Z Royal Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 3600mhz CAS Latency 14

    2 x SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2 2280 2TB

    Fractal Design Meshify 2 Black

    CORSAIR RMx Series RM750x CP-9020179-NA 750W

    Some thoughts :

Motherboard wifi is a nice to have if I move PC around and wiring not readily available. I just want a very decent board that won't cheap out on me without paying more than the CPU for lots of feature I likely won't be using. That one seemed fine. I don't care for a similar one 50$ cheaper.

Storage : I don't know much. I bought a lot of Samsung SSD and NVME for work and always felt they were quality and none broke on me during many years. I read Samsung is very good here and there and my mind is just wrapped up around this. I don't bother cheaping 20-50$ bucks and comparing and just go for it.

RAM : Based on my readings, sweet spot is around 3600mhz and before going higher better go with lower latency and dual-rank. I feel like I'm overpaying for improvement I probably won't even notice over a regular 3600mhz kit with CL16 or whatever. I don't know.

PSU : Didn't bother reading. Corsair seems fine, modular seems nice and I guess 750w is plenty enough.

Case : Quite big but I don't care. Seems like an amazing case to work with and plenty of disk space for my video editing hobby going out of control soon.

COOLING : Didn't wrap my choice. I bought a Corsair H115i (280mm) once and I liked it. I don't know if I should go H115i or H150i. I know it's expansive but whatever. This is a long term build anyway. I guess both are just fine and it's just a matter of where it's going to be mounted. I don't have much experience with airflows and stuff. I feel like mounting a 360 on the front of Meshify 2 with a single exhaust fan would be a simple yet very efficient setup.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Fried PCIE slot and GPU

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 01:47 PM PDT

While on my PC today I heard some odd static like sound that I thought was just in the youtube video I was watching. Within a few seconds I saw smoke and could smell some kind of electrical burning smell.

Looks like the PCIE slot on my mobo fried and took the GPU with it. Any ideas what I can do and what caused this? I got these through newegg shuffle less than a month ago.

After many delays from DELL on a pre-built, i bit the bullet on gpu prices (probably going to end up biting me in the butt) and switched to building my own. However, I'm very lucky to have this situation. This is actually my "first" PC. I've owned a couple laptops but nothing like this. Finally joining the club. I would rather not say how much i spent on the 1660 Super. Yikes. But whatever, at least i'll have the proper platform to upgrade.

    I screwed up big time.

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 01:31 PM PDT

My friend wanted more ram so he bought 8gb.

He already have 2x4 and I asked that it wouldn't run in dual channel anymore and he said that that would be fine (so don't tell me that 2x4 and 1x8 isn't good)

    He has a Nitro N50-600

And he had 2 unkown ram sticks (he bought a prebuilt) (they were green)

They were both 2666mhz and the new one was also 2666

So I tried to help him by putting the new one into (which failed)

the pc didn't boot after putting it in but removing it let the pc boot.

I asked my other friends about it and they told me to remove the old ones and only put in the new one.

I did that and the pc didn't boot, so I put in the old ones

and the pc just screamed (long beep)

I kept trying and eventually the mobo only did 1 beep and now the pc runs on 4gb of ram instead of 8

You could ask me for more info if needed.

    Please help!

Edit: I found an exact photo of his pc

    Damage from pot smoke?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 11:16 AM PDT

Friend of mine smokes pot in his room every day and had an MSI 2070 gaming X OC or something like that and it broke after 11 months. Then he bought a cheap rx 550 and it broke after a year and a half. Can the smoke ruin a gpu? Or is he really unlucky?

Pc won’t turn on after installing 3080 ti gpu. LEDs on mobo working.

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 12:45 PM PDT

So I recently built a new gaming pc with my old gpu and it worked completely fine. I now upgraded to a 3080 ti and now the pc won't turn on at all.

I uninstalled the old drivers in safe mode before removing the gpu. The only thing working is the LEDs on the motherboard.

    Specs:

    Gpu(old): Gainward Geforce GTX 1060 6GB

Gpu(new): MSI Geforce RTX 3080Ti Gaming X Trio

    Cpu: Intel core i9-10900K

    Ram: G.skill trident Z neo DDR4 3600Mhz 32GB (2x16)

Ssd: Samsung 980 pro 1 tb

    Cpu cooler: NZXT Kraken X73

    Psu: MSI MPG A850GF

Mobo: Asus rog strix Z490-A gaming

I cannot find a solution anywhere and trying to avoid taking it to IT if possible. Any help is appreciated.

Edit: Only the asus logo is flashing rainbows on motherboard. Pc turned on for a split second with no gpu in it, but now it won't start again.

    AOC 27G2G4 monitor

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 12:38 PM PDT

A lil bit off topic, but i need some help. So i recently bought this monitor mentioned in the title. To be exact i switched from a benq zowie xl2411p to this. Mainly because i wanted an IPS panel and gsync. Well, when i play games with this monitor, the gsync feels like it doesn't exist. Im getting screen tearing left right and centre, sometimes it feels like im playing on 60hz it starts micro stuttering like crazy then goes back to "normal" and quite frankly its a mess. I have enbaled gsync through Nvidia control panel and the OSD from the monitor menu. My brother has the exact same monitor and its very good on his pc. Its way smoother than my "normal" smoothness when its not screen tearing or micro stuttering like crazy. It doesn't matter if i have my fps locked to 141fps or completely unlocked.

Any idea what could be the problem? Im thinking at the store they might have gave me this monitor that someone else has returned before or a bad display cable? You guys got a solution for this? Thank you in advance.

Upgrading GPU 2060 Super to 3060

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 02:28 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

currently I have the EVGA RTX 2060 Super (EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 Super XC Gaming, 8 GB GDDR6) model in my rig (5600X, 32 GB Ram) and would have the chance to get a 3060 (EVGA GeForce RTX 3060 XC Gaming 12GB GDDR6) almost at MSRP.

I play in 1440p only, so do you think I would benefit from such an upgrade?

I play all sorts of titles such as Arma3, Valheim, Snowrunner, MSFS2020 and my current setup works out quite good.

    Best regards and thanks everyone!
