Most of you might already be well aware of this, but it bears repeating - modular PSU cables are NOT interchangeable.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 09:27 AM PDT

Earlier this week I was elated to find out that I had finally won a 3080 from the Newegg shuffle, after entering since November without any success. My Ventus 3080 Ti arrived just 2 days later, on Wednesday, and I was packed with excitement, eager to get my new card in. Because my power supply was only 750w, I felt it was probably best to upgrade to 850w Seasonic Platinum before putting the new card in (my 9900k is heavily OC'd). After finishing work I sat down at my desk and couldn't wait to get my build running with the new hardware.

I took out my old Thermaltake PSU, and here's where everything went horribly wrong. "I'm sure there's no problem just using the old cables that are connected to everything," I thought.

    No.

    No.

    HUGE MISTAKE.

When my PC didn't post or show any power after swapping the cables into my new PSU (yes, they fit fine), I was puzzled. I thought it could be the cables (duh), and swapped the ATX power and CPU power cables, as well as my 3080 Ti PCI-E power connector. I did not swap the remaining cables for SATA power and AIO / fan connectors.

I think you guys see where this is going.

After putting everything back in I flipped the power and was relieved to see my mobo light up. Hit the power switch, and the power instantly cycled. Everything flashed for half a second and turned off. My stomach dropped harder than you could imagine and I was instantly overcome with dread. I tried again. Same result. Knew something was obviously very wrong, and my mind immediately went to the modular cables.

I knew what I did. It was too late.

    My total damages were

    • 3x NZXT AER 140mm RGB fans

    • 1x NZXT AER 120mm RGB fan

    • 1x Corsair H115i Platinum AIO (no longer works, I think the pump got fried)

    • 2x WD HDDs somewhere around 4TB. Thankfully, no valuable data, just a bunch of junk stuff I've amassed over the last 2 or 3 PCs I had them in.

All the fans still work as fans, but the LEDs are completely dead. AIO just doesn't work at all.

My one very VERY bright reprieve in this shitty experience is that the PC didn't power on when I first had the wrong cables attached to my motherboard and 3080. Thank GOD none of my expensive parts were damaged (mobo, CPU, GPU, ram are all fine). I was able to run over to Bestbuy just before they closed on Wednesday night to pick up a replacement AIO, but had to downgrade to a 240mm because that's all that was in-store. Fortunately, after installing the new AIO, everything was working fine and I got to enjoy my new card for the rest of the night.

I share my story of extreme stupidity with you guys in the hopes that no one who reads it will repeat my mistake. I've been building PCs for like 15 years, over a dozen builds under my belt, but I never swapped out a PSU before. Never read this anywhere so it just didn't occur to me that the cables are not universal and standardized. After reading some heavy-hearted threads by other builders who made the same mistake, I learned that this is a lot more common knowledge than I thought.

Here's your friendly reminder for this year guys: don't be lazy, swap all of your modular PSU cables if you change power supplies!!

    Got IP Banned from pcpartpicker.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 06:47 PM PDT

So I was using this chrome extension to open a bunch of tabs at one time because I was trying to compare a bunch of parts as well as pricing and availability.

I think it must have triggered something on pcpartpicker's site because now I have a full IP ban from my home. I tried reaching out by contacting them through their online help on their site, as well as reaching out to them on Facebook.

Someone saw the message on Facebook, but never replied. No contact yet from them through e-mail.

This seems like a pretty innocent thing to use. I think it tripped their bot detection system because as I was trying to go through my tabs, I noticed some had the "prove you aren't a bot" prompt, but due to how the extension works, I never even had a chance before getting IP banned.

Has anyone had any experience with this before? I've been using them for the last 6 years or so to build my own PCs and put together builds for other people and never had any problems. I assume they've beefed up security to deal with scalpers, but it just sucks to lose access to one of my best resources for building PCs.

Edit: VPNs and hotspots are temporary fixes, trying to go about not be banned anymore.

I'm a soldier and I make about 270$ a month. Can I build a PC and still afford other living expenses?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 05:17 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm a 22 year old soldier and I make about 270$ a month. I used to have a PS4 until it finally gave up on me (I guess it reached its end after all these years lol).

Anyway, I only play Warzone and Modern Warfare.

I know 270$ is barely enough for even the cheapest part per month but I only need it to run smoothly and hopefully better than a PS4 runs it. Is it possible with this little money?

    Thanks in advance!

RTX 3080 Choices. Yes you heard that right

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:51 AM PDT

I am in a very fortunate position and have 2 RTX 3080s in my possession. One ASUS TUF OC and one EVGA FTW3 Ultra. The ASUS card is non LHR and the EVGA is LHR, I am not a miner, just a gamer, but does this have any performance for gaming? Thats the only difference I know between the two cards, so what are the other factors that you would make a choice based on, and which one would y'all choose? Thanks

    Noob needing help

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:33 PM PDT

Hi, I have recently built my first desktop and I am really looking forward to be able to do more things than what my laptop currently allows. I believe I have all the parts, however when I boot up, I am greeted with a blank screen. This is normally black, but has been static-like and white. Windows isn't installed yet however I do have it on a memory stick which is plugged in for every boot. Everything seems to be connected properly. Any suggestions?

My specs are: CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 GPU: 1050ti Mobo: Asus Prime A520M-K (came with CPU installed) RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) 3000MHz Harddrive: Toshiba DT01ACA050 (500GB) Power Supply: EVGA 600W 80 Plus Certified Power Supply.

To build a PC, or buy a pre build?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:18 PM PDT

With the current state of the market… should I buy a prebuilt PC or build one myself?

Finally got my dream job and after a few months, I've almost saved enough to finally invest in my dream PC/ setup.

I don't know much about PC's, but am willing to learn, I just know that 30 series cards are harder to find than gold right now. Wondering if I should take the time to try to get my hands on one, since I know how to by having just gone through the process to get a PS5, it just takes time and effort.

Or should I just find a prebuild that suits my wants? Anyone know of any good prebuilds on the market, or the best places to look at them? In the past I've heard to stay away, but it seems as though with the current state of things, that they are some good options.

    Thanks in advance!

Is it possible to build a pc faster multiple times than MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 09:58 AM PDT

I have a MacBook Pro with the following specs. My problem is that I execute computationally intense calculation with large set of data, which takes about 30 minutes with my MacBook Pro. More seriously, I have to repeat similar calculations very frequently.

    • Model: MacBook Pro (16-inch 2019)
    • Processor: 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
    • Memory: 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
    • Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4 GB
    • Storage: 1 TB SSD.

So, my aim is to shorten the calculation time to less than 5 minutes. For this, I am considering to buy Mac Pro with the following specifications.

    • 3.2GHz 16‑core Intel Xeon W processor with Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
    • 96GB (6 × 16GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
    • Radeon Pro W5700X with 16GB of GDDR6 memory
    • 2TB of SSD storage

    My questions are as below.

    (1) the computation currently taking 30 minutes cannot be done with parallel computing. So maybe a CPU with a large number of cores would not help much. Would you still think the Mac Pro with the above spec will shorten the calculation time by multiple times (hopefully make it less than 5 minutes) ?

    (2) I heard rumours that Apple will stop making Mac Pro sooner than later. So is it good idea to buy Mac Pro?

    (3) If Mac Pro with the above specification cannot shorten the calculation time substantially, will it do if I build a pc with a budget of USD$13,000 to USD#16,000? If it does, please advise me what specs a pc should be built with. And I also wonder if it is a good idea to contact a local pc builder to build with the specs.

Any advice on this issue would be very much appreciated. Thank you for the help in advance.

EDIT: I am happy to use a pc with Windows if I can shorten the calculation time by 4 to 5 times. But I also wonder if Mac Pro with the above specs can shorten the time as well.

How strongly does the retention bracket (AM4) hold the CPU?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:27 AM PDT

I'll be traveling in a few weeks and even though my pc is small enough to be taken as carry-on, I unfortunately can't. I'll be putting it in with the rest of my luggage. To prevent undue stress on the motherboard, I'll be taking off the heatsink (noctua NH L12S) and the GPU. If it helps, I have an ITX motherboard in an Ncase M1.

Does the AM4 retention bracket hold in the CPU strongly enough for me to leave it without a heatsink? Or should I leave the heatsink on and pray it stays safe? Thanks.

!? New Build - No Monitor Signal

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:21 AM PDT

My husband and I have just completed my new build - super exciting! It's all working smoothly and running perfectly...

BUT we're having an issue with my ultrawide monitor coming up with No Signal on all sources (although only 1 HDMI cable plugged in so obviously the other three ports (1x HDMI 2x Display Port) would have no signal).

The monitor was working perfectly with the same HDMI cable on my old build a few hours ago so we know nothing is wrong with the monitor.

The new build displays fine on our spare 1920x1080 monitor via HDMI and we've been into the BIOS and have been booting the PC etc. and it's all fine and Windows loads to the login screen fine.

On the ultrawide however, the screen stays completely blank and then just cycles between standby and on/HDMI no signal every 20 seconds or so. No BIOS or boot screens and no loaded Windows login screen.

I am using an Asus ROG Strix XG43VQ - which has been running perfectly for the several months I've owned it.

My new build doesn't have onboard graphics, but I am using an MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Super Gaming 6GB GPU which is obviously what we have been plugging the HDMI cable into for both the 1920x1080 test monitor (that works) and my 43" ultrawide (that doesn't work).

The only thing I can think of is that the GPU needs drivers for the monitor as it's not a 'standard' size and given that we're installing a new instance of Windows, I'll have to use another 'normal' monitor until everything is all set up and then plug in the ultrawide...?

My husband has no thoughts on what the problem is because he's not had any experience with ultrawide monitors and doesn't know where to start to troubleshoot - and neither do I, so here I am!

Any help that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!

    Many thanks in advance!

Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite Wifi Vs MSI X570 Tomahawk?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:58 PM PDT

    Hi!

I had my mind set on the Tomahawk, but the Aorus Elite is on sale currently and is 50$ cheaper.

Both have great reviews, and it really comes down to the design (winner: Aorus Elite), the RGB software (winner: Tomahawk). However I do have a more important concern: I saw a few comments about poor reliability on the Gigabyte X570 lineup, also this comment about XMP issues. Should it be a concern? Generally speaking, which mobo would you choose?
