School said I can't have an AMD cpu for my programming course. I'd rather not buy a new cpu and mobo. Thoughts?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 02:31 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm taking a Computer IT diploma program starting this September. The school sent out the spec requirements for our computers and I was surprised to see that it was specifically stated NOT to have an AMD processor.

I've done a free programming course online before using C and Python and I've never had a problem using my current PC (Ryzen 5 1600).

Do I really need to buy a new CPU (which means I will also need a new MOBO)? I'd really rather not have to shell out more money on a new CPU and MOBO.

Will having an AMD CPU cause future issues with programming software?

Here are the software we are expecting to be using according to the orientation:

    • MS Office
    • MS Visual Studio
    • .Net
    • Java
    • Eclipse
    • Variety of Other programs

The computer labs at the school are currently using Windows, macOS, Linus, and UNIX operating systems.

    Thanks guys! Appreciate the help!

EDIT: Thank you everyone! As some of you have suggested, I think I'll just keep my current system and use the labs if I come across any hicups with AMD. Thank you again!

Is this a fake tube of Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 1g ?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 01:34 PM PDT

I recently bought a tube of Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 1g but It came in a black tube and I looked around and people are saying that the black tubes are fake.
I checked the code and it said it was real, I even went on the website to see if the place i bought it from (Megekko) was a official seller and it is, but im still skeptical and want to know for sure I wasn't scammed

By common sense wont that just give me burns??

for reference: i have a 2200g mounted on a b450 atx motherboard using stock cooler.

SSD or HDD? And are the HDD still worth it in 2021?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 11:15 AM PDT

Are HDD still good to use in modern day technology? They are a lot cheaper than SSD and hold way more space but is it worth it? Don't get me wrong I would pick an SSD any day. But the one I want are out of stock and I don't want to send $200-300 for 1TB when the one I wanted was only $109. I saw the HDD 1TB for only $44 but I'm not sure if I should get it. How much slower does it run in compared to the SSD? I was thinking about getting a 500GB SSD and a 2TB HDD. Would having both be the best option?

Is 750W enough for my needs?

I have a MSI 3080 and an i9 10850k. I want to heavily over clock this build but I have a 750 GT from EVGA. Thoughts on if this is enough wattage? (750w gold btw)

I'm looking to use my old desktop parts (MOBO+CPU) to make a server box to play games like Minecraft, space engineers, maybe battlefield, and possibly plex. Anything really that I feel like hosting. I'm mainly looking for case recommendations (mid-tower/server rack box) and input on the ram and power supply. I currently have a NZXT h440 for my desktop and wouldn't be averse to using it for the server box if someone thinks it would be more worthwhile to upgrade my desktop case. Any input it welcome

Some things I've already noticed is that my ram will only run at a max of 2400 on the mobo, and I wanted to know if that would be a significant detriment.

    Is 3600 + 2060 good enough for 1440p or should I stick to 1080p?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 02:04 PM PDT

I saw a sweet deal on a PC that is only like $50 above MSRP (i put the stuff into pcpartpicker and set the 2060 to $400). Should I get a 1080p or 1440p monitor for this setup? I would like to play story-driven singleplayer games like RDR2 and HZD at max settings at 60+ fps I'm okay with lowering settings on more competitive games to get to 60 or 144 fps.

How can i make my PC quieter?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 01:48 PM PDT

Around a month ago or so I build myself a new Rig, and although i don't feel as if the PC itself is loud at all I cant seem to ignore the noise it makes compared to my old setup even though its apparently 6db quieter, I've recently fitted a new CPU fan from the not so great stock AMD wraith fan and that seemed to help a bit but its still a little loud for my liking and unless I'm paranoid it wasn't a problem for me previously, I've thought about straight up replacing the 4 case fans with supposedly "quieter" options but even when the fans are off it still seems to be a bit loud, the case fans are all the 3pins in 4pin connectors however they're set to DC in the bios so they're not running max rpm constantly, however does anyone else have better suggestions?

    Build:

-NZXT H510 Case (4 NZXT Case fans (top/rear/x2front)

-AMD Ryzen 5 5600X (Be Quiet Pure rock2)

    -MSI GTX 1660 TI

    -M.2 SSD Drive 500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO

-CORSAIR 750W RMx SERIES MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, "ULTRA QUIET"

A warning about Shadowplay and saving to SSD's

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 05:03 AM PDT

tl:dr Shadowplay is constantly writing to the DRIVE you set as the save location, not to the GPU VRAM as I assumed. This will demolish an SSD depending on the settings you record the video.

So this may be common knowledge and i'm just an idiot, but I noticed that my SSD which ive only had as a boot drive since October (brand new) was at 93% health and had written close to 40TB of data.

This is well outside of typical usage, especially as I don't do any work or hobbies that involve moving large files constantly to or from the drive, I narrowed it down to being a new build without an HDD and shadowplay. I had assumed that shadowplay was hosted all on Nvidia's hardware, with the shadowplay file being constantly written and rewritten on a segment of VRAM, and only dumping the footage when you hit the keybind to record the last X seconds. However its just constantly writing and rewriting to whatever drive you designate as the location. I had assumed this is how ACTIVELY recording worked but not the shadowplay feature.

Luckily I caught on early but I hope if this isn't common knowledge someone else can read this and save an unnecessary amount of usage on an SSD drive.

Building a new PC + upgrading GPU later on?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:09 AM PDT

hey, I have built my current PC about 7 years ago, so I figured its time for an upgrade and wanted to ask what you think about it.

    My current setup is:

    • CPU: i7-4790
    • GPU: KFA2 GTX 1070
    • MB: MSI Z97 SLI Krait Edition
    • PSU: i dont know which exact model, some 550W be-quiet Bronze
    • Storage: a 125GB SSD, a 1TB SSD, a 1TB HDD and a 500GB HDD

Now I would like to upgrade to this:

My plan would be to just upgrade the system, and move all of my data on my HDDs to a new 2TB HDD, and take the 1TB SSD with me to the new system, where I have a new 1TB M.2 SSD, so 2TB SSD and 2TB HDD in total. Question is: does it work that I just take out the 1070 of my old system and use it in my new system, and once I can get my hands on the 3080 just easily upgrade it?

I would like to give my old/current PC to my girlfriend, so I would like to leave the old PC as much as is.

Would you change anything about the parts? If so, please tell me! :)

    Thanks for your help!

Motherboard Help for 5900x - First Time

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 02:54 PM PDT

Please go easy as I'm new to the AMD ecosystem and novice at PC building. To keep it as brief as possible - I'm building around the 5900x and an Asus Strix 3080 but have yet to feel confident in a motherboard. The latest rabbit hole discouraging me was the Realtek 2.5G Network Adapter issues that were circulating a few months back. This troubled me as I hardwire in and need reliable internet for hours uninterrupted. I could get a card but that would eat up space needed for other capture cards. I believe others have told me this has been fixed but I'm unclear.

I'm not an overclocker but would like to leave the opportunity for down the road - I most likely will not overclock. I need this to be my daily driver. I'd like to use 2 M.2s if possible but one and a few SSDs would work. I would like the option of 3 PCIe x 16 slots ( one for GPU and two for other capture cards that only require x4 each), however there are work arounds if the motherboard can't do this. A front panel thunderbolt header would be convenient, but not required. I utilize many usb3 ports for audio interfaces, capture card, then USBs for M&Ks, Oculus ( thunderbolt)… A good amount of rear IO headroom is always nice to see.

I game/ stream at same time and edit/render 4K videos in Premiere/ AE.

Motherboards ( not in any order other than when I researched them:

    1) Asus B550 -F - Like the color & price but short on PCIE lanes. Would need work around for internal capture cards. Has a front thunderbolt header which is nice but ultimately thinking no on this. So pass.

    2) B550 Vision D-P- 1 PCIE x16, 1 x8, 1 x4. This should allow me to use GPU and2 capture cards as desired but option 4 makes this one a no. Pass.

    3) Dark Hero viii - This board looks to have all the bells and whistles. Any users have good luck with this one? Any temp issues or anything to be aware of?

    4) x570s Aero This board was just recommended to me and it looks very good. So I'm really debating this against the Asus Dark Hero Viii. I'm leaning towards it atm. Anything to be aware of with Gigabyte?

Thanks for your help!!! Any other recommendations or guidance is welcomed! Hope this helps others in the same boat too.

    Cheers!

Should I wait to buy a 30 series gpu

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 02:46 PM PDT

Seeing as gpu prices are finally starting to drop would it be a good time to buy a gpu or should I wait. I have seen 3070's for 1k and 3060's for 800< was just wondering if I should wait for them to fall and potentially risk them being out of stock again.

No network adapter / ethernet / wifi after cpu, mobo and gpu change

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 12:21 PM PDT

Just changed the parts last night. I can't seem to connect to the internet either with ethernet or wifi (mobo came with an external wifi antennae). I wiped my hard drive, used a windows installation cd from my old mobo, and installed drivers using the disc that came with the current mobo. Lights on the LAN port are on and the bios seems to detect a connection. The driver setup disc also says that the ethernet controller/ driver is installed but I don't think windows detects it? Unexpectedly scored myself a 3090 KINGPIN and now I'm worried my 750W PSU isn't up to the task. Will an 850W be enough of an upgrade or should I go bigger?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:44 AM PDT

This is my main rig I use for everything: gaming, software development, overclocking fun, folding at home etc.

With the new card I would like to be able to tinker with overclocking but nothing as hardcore as doing LN2. Will eventually be upgrading my monitor to 4k but for now I'm on 1440p and so my goal is to be able to push max frames on max settings for anything while running several programs in the background as well.

Budget for the new PSU is whatever it takes to run my system safely. Would like to spend less than $400 seeing as I already have to buy a whole new case to fit the second 360mm AIO attached to the GPU.

    I am in the US.

My biggest concern is not providing enough power to the system and damaging components. This is my baby, my first built PC that I have worked my butt off for and I want to do it right. While the build isn't exactly what you would call frugal, my bank account is not bottomless, so if I could safely save a couple hundred bucks on the PSU (for now) I would like to.

Thanks to anyone willing to help. Wouldn't be here now without you all!

    cpu temps

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 11:26 AM PDT

I just built my first gaming pc and currently don't have a way to check CPU temps I do have a way to see my coolant temp for my CPU through corsair Icue. I was thinking of installing ryzen master as my CPU is a ryzen 5 5600x but I don't know if there's a way that I'm not realising and advise would be great :)

(i do have a way to check my ram and gpu temps)

Need help with a dual Windows/Linux build for work and gaming

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 11:08 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I am a junior software developer who is fully work-from-home. My work is not particularly demanding, so I think occasional gaming will be the major driver here. I want to boot Linux and Windows 10 using separate SSDs so that I can both work and game. Linux and Windows 10 compatibility is critical.

I am currently using a 2011 MacBook pro and I have never built a PC before so I am very inexperienced... I have picked really good stuff here but I don't want to waste money. If I can get away with older/slower components that would be great! I haven't really used a modern computer and my expectations are quite low.

I have intentionally left out the GPU because things are crazy right now. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations for an older GPU, just as long as I can still play modern games at reduced settings. My plan is to upgrade this in the future.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I would like to play modern games with "decent" settings. The first game on my list is the new Flight Simulator. I haven't gamed since the 2000's so I expect that I would still be extremely happy with lower settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

2000-3000 CAD (1500-2500 USD). I want to optimize for quality, not necessarily get the "latest and greatest" stuff.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada
