Is it just me or does the quality of consumer UPSs on the market seem dodgy at best?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 01:44 PM PDT

As the title says, I've been recently looking at a replacement UPS (uninterruptible power supply) since my last cyberpower one died on me. I tried to replace the batteries in it and within 2 weeks those failed on me too so it seems like the unit itself was no good, Customer Service was less than helpful in getting this resolved…

I just purchased an APC with the same specs as previous (sinewave and 1500) and once received and all hooked up, it makes a high pitched buzzing noise similar to coil whine… Now I've held off for a while replacing it because every review you see out there is something along the lines of "Had it for two weeks before it died", or, "This thing almost burned my house down after exploding!". None of these brands seem to instill any confidence but I want to protect my investment having recently upgraded some hardware and also experiencing some power surges due to the storms rolling through the east coast.

Anyways I digress, has everyone had issues with these and if not, which brand did you find the most reliable. Also if those of you find them unnecessary, what alternatives do you prefer to protect your machine from mother nature?

Touching the motherboard the wrong way

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 11:49 PM PDT

Hey my mobo just came In and I wanted to see it, I know the cardinal rule is to hold the mobo by the sides. However I was holding it on the bottom with my palm spread out like it's a pizza box but I had the anti static plastic on. I was just wondering did I put my mobo in danger ? Mind you I did not drop it or break it or touch any small components.

What are good Mechanical Keyboards for gaming and typing under $100? Bonus points if they're easy to find for sale.

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 09:27 AM PDT

I've been out of touch with the latest MCH Keyboards advances and want to get a new keyboard for around $100. The reason why I say that it gets bonus points if it's easy to find for sale is cause I'm a brazilian abroad on the US, so I have a limited time here to buy stuff.

I've been reading into it and just from what I read, I'd guess my type of switch would be the Brown switches for a balance between working and gaming. I've preferred blues in the past due to the clickiness but I've grown past that now, and would prefer something less noisy.

Anyways, what are your recommendations? I saw a G512 Carbon in a Sam's Club these days for 90 bucks and it seemed pretty good. Anything better than that in the $100 price range?

Red Vs Brown switches for keyboard

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 11:45 AM PDT

I'm going to buy the Royal Kludge RK61 but idk if I should buy red or brown switches. Which are best for gaming and are the most satisfying to use? I've ruled out blue because they are too loud especially when I am playing with friends

    Lancool 2 Mesh Build Adivce

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 03:29 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I've been periodically buying parts for a first time build (after years of being on a laptop) and was wondering if I could get some suggestions/advice on potential parts or extra things I should buy.

    Things I have so far:

    • Case: Lian Li Lancool II Mesh Performance
    • PSU: EVGA Supernova 750 P2
    • RAM: 4x8 Ballistix 3600 DDR4
    • SSD: Adata SX8200 Pro (1TB NVME)

    Things I'm planning on getting:

    • CPU: AMD 5900x
    • GPU: 3080 FE

Things I'm not so sure about:

    • Motherboard: Asus TUF X570-Plus
    • CPU Cooler: Dark Rock Pro 4
    • Monitor: 27" 1440p 144hz, potentially two (haven't done much research on these yet)
    • Extra case fans?

Would a build like this be sufficient in terms of cooling, or would I need some extra fans? Is there anything else I'm missing that I'm forgetting about?

    Thanks in advance!!

    Build success!

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 08:55 AM PDT

To my huge excitement, my local parts shop is fighting miners by bundling CPUs and GPUs together.

So after two generations of shortages and cycling between no stock and 'the new cards come out in six months, I'll just wait'

I've finally acquired an evga FTW 3090 and a 5950x.

Liquid metal for thermal compound dropped a few extra degrees off my cpu temps

I still fully believe buying a 3090 is grossly overkill and isn't worth it, but it was what they had.

Moral of the story, keep your hopes up! Stock is coming more and more regularly. Some of us regulars might actually be able to finally finish our builds

Is 7200RPM 4TB HDD worth the cost vs a 5400RPM for Gaming?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 11:36 AM PDT

My main drive is a SSD. I live in EU the Netherlands.

The drive I will potentially buy will only be used for Games or mainly gaming.

I have atleast 100 or more Steam Games.

    [11-07-2021_20-35_20_36.]

    Edit0: I already have a HDD thats 5400 RPM.

Edit01: The price difference is 10-20 Euro, but that is compared to the lowest priced ones. [11-07-2021_20_46.]

    Will a i5 6600K bottleneck too much a 30xx?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 04:27 PM PDT

My GPU (980TI) just died I've tried to do some soldering to fix it but it only worked for a few more days. This is my build:

    • Intel Core i5 6600K
    • G.SKILL Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4
    • Corsair Hydro Series H100i
    • ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming LGA

Is it worth investing in a 30xx or would it be better at this point to just save for a brand new build?

Can somebody recommend me a good budget motherboard and case?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 02:09 PM PDT

In about 2 months i'll have 1000 euros or more for my first ever PC build, right now i'm leaning towards using i5 10600K CPU and RTX 2060 GPU, but i'll keep track of prices 2 months from now. If i do end up using this CPU and GPU, what are some of your recommendations for motherboards and cases? For motherboards i thought of buying the Tomahawk B450, but i don't know if still holds up today and if it will limit my PCs full potential

Advice on my 1st build list

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 09:50 PM PDT

This is my first time putting together a build list. I'm not a gamer, but need to run 4 monitors. I had a few minor obstacles getting this Quadro P2200 card on the list. Sometimes, it would not show as compatible, and if I chose it first, I could get it to work out. So still need to verify it will run with this cpu and motherboard combo. Thanks for any feedback!

I wasn't sure I needed a water cooling system since I'm not gaming. I'm using this at work, so it will be on 10 hours a day running four 4k monitors (which is why I went with Quadro).

New Build Wont Boot to Windows

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 03:14 PM PDT

    So,

I just finished putting together my updated PC -

    MSI B550 Tomahawk 5600x GTX 1080 32GB 3200 RAM

My issue - I plugged my old M.2 Boot drive from my old PC thinking it would be usable as a bootdrive for my new PC - Windows 10. Is this not the case?

I finally managed to boot into the BIOS by using an HDMI cable instead of a DP cable, but I cannot get the new computer to see my old M.2 drive as a boot drive. Any ideas? I'm flashing the BIOS right now.

Edit: Update, flashing the BIOS did not help. The PC still boots directly into the BIOS

    Monitor Advice: 3080 ti - 144hz 1440p or 144hz 4k

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 02:58 PM PDT

I've finally become fortunate enough to lay may hands on a 3080 ti and have around 80% of the rest of the build still in transit. As I wait, I've begun looking at monitors and what I've found has been somewhat inconsistent. I thought I'd reach out and ask my question directly.

What I'm trying to determine is which monitor to upgrade to to maximize taking advantage of the card, while providing the better gaming experience.

    • Bench marks lead me to believe the 3080 ti can comfortably handle 4k 80+ frames on ultra settings.
      • This would lean me toward just getting the 4k 144hz monitor and being done
    • However as games continue to push hardware boundaries over the next 5-8 years, I question how soon before the card is pushed down into the 4k less than 60FPS range.
      • This makes me question if getting a 1440p may be a better move as I doubt the card will see 1440p as a challenge before it's end of life.

As I search the web, I see many opinions for the 1440p, however I am under the impression they are older posts responding to the fact that 4k monitors were only available in 60hz at that time. Now that monitors hit 4k at 144hz, maybe it's a different answer?

I appreciate your thoughts - Thanks.

PC won't boot after replacing ram

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 04:51 PM PDT

    i5-8600k Gtx 1080 Asus prime z390 a

    Old ram - Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16 GB DDR4-2400 CL16 (2x8)

    New ram - G.Skill Ripjaw V 32GB DDR4-3600 CL19 (2x16)

I bought some new ram to upgrade my system today and when I installed it, my motherboard shows a yellow led which I believe it means that my PC isn't booting because of my ram. I tested removing one stick and putting it in every ram slot and tried doing that with the other stick and it still won't boot. I tried flicking the MemOk switch and it still won't boot. I replaced it again with my old ram sticks and it booted so I know the problem is with my new ram.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Why does my SSD rest angled on my stand-off?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 02:24 PM PDT

    SSD- https://imgur.com/a/ECsb1Aa

    Standoff- https://imgur.com/a/Jtw9eUr

As you can see, it's angled, and yes it is the correct standoff (fits so tight it takes hell to get it out), but I'm worried it sits slanted, is this dangerous to the SSD?

Am I asking too much for this desktop? $550?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 04:35 PM PDT

Hey! I have been thinking about this and researching it quite a bit recently but I'm wanting someone else's opinion just to see what y'all think. I'm trying not to rip anyone off when selling it.

This desktop will need an upgrade eventually, but it will run generally all games on medium.

    Optiplex 3010 motherboard i5-3470 16gb (8x2) (2666hz I think) ram 250 gb Kingston SSD + 1tb HDD 700 watt PSU (less than 12 months old) MSI GTX 1650 LP

I've been offered $550 for it.

What would you guys purchase this for?

I'm just trying to make a couple bucks, please don't criticize for no reason.

Please Help. New PC not booting up

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 12:42 PM PDT

After painstakingly waiting for Graphics card to become available, I managed to snag a RTX3090 FE. I was finally able to assemble the PC today. But the fans won't spin, graphics card won't turn on and no boot up. Where should I start troubleshooting. Build details

Processor: AMD 3700X Graphics card: RTX3090 FE PSU: Corsair RM850 Motherboard: ASRock B550M Pro4 RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB LPX DDR4 Cooler: Noctua NH D14 Case: Fractal Node 804

I have reseated cables on PSU side, HDMI out correctly plugged to Graphics Card. Only 1 fan spins and 4 other fans attempt to spin but stop within a second. Graphics card doesn't even light up. At a complete loss to start troubleshooting. Any help appreciated.
