How do I convince my dad to let me build my own PC?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:44 AM PDT

Just for context, I'm 13 and recently won a regional spelling bee and got 2nd in a national one. I got 300$ from both (one of those checks is still on the way [all of this is Canadian dollars]). So, just to clarify, I'm paying for this.

I want to build a pc for video editing and light gaming, both at 1080p and I already made a part list that doesn't go much over budget. The problem is that since I'm only 13, I don't have a Paypal account or a bank account and the money, therefore, goes to my dad. That means any purchase I want to make has to go through him.

He's fine with me buying a PC, but he wants me to get a pre-built one. I know how bad pre-builts are, how to upgrade a single component you have to upgrade 3 others, how there's a lot of necessary information that you don't know when purchasing, how I'm scared the PSU will explode short circuit my system or something after a year, etc. I really can't tell if I just need to convince him or if he's actually not going to let me, but after all, it is my money. How do I convince him into letting me buy the parts?

My husband loves his PC. What should I get him for his birthday?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 06:19 PM PDT

So my husband is constantly working on his PC. It is his pride and joy. I literally know next to zero about computers, even though I try really hard to listen haha. I know his most recent parts are a 3080 graphics card, and he just installed a EVEA Hybrid Cooling Upgrade kit??? Something like an xc3. Anyway, his birthday is soon, and I was wondering what would best gift for someone who also loves to build computers? $500 and under range. Doesn't necessarily have to be a computer part!

Ordered Asus RTX 3070 ROG Strix OC and realised it is too big for Thermaltake CoreV1 ITX Case (see pic)

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:48 AM PDT

I ordered a RTX 3070 ROG Strix OC on amazon as it was the only one in stock at the time. Facepalmed when I realised it is too long and too wide for my Thermaltake CoreV1 ITX case. I didn't want to spend anymore money and research into which ITX case could fit it in and I was too impatient to test it out with the card right in front of me. So I got the angle grinder out and I'm quite happy with the result.

Totally just impulse bought a whole rig

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 09:55 AM PDT

I've been thinking about building a new rig for a little while and last night I was browsing Best Buy and b&h and they had some nice little goodies in stock. So I decided to use my whole paycheck in the span of ten minutes to order a 5600x, mobo, a case, power supply, and I'm gonna part out my current one for my 1070ti until I can get my hands on a 3060. I'm excited to throw everything together this weekend

I want to avoid overkill with RTX 3060 build.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes. It helps.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming and huge media storage.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1080 , 140fps , ultra/nightmare settings

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

2400 USD but lower the better.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RB2pcT

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    1. No over clocking.
    2. GPU must be RTX 3060 (no more, no less)
    3. Total HDD must be 8 TB
    4. Minimum Ram is 16GB acceptable. Max is 32GB.
    5. Will not be upgrading further for next 10 years.
    6. Pure game and media.
    7. Anti-work and anti-mining. (Not even checking work emails)

I am worried that I've over killed in many parts that could be bottle necks (especially the CPU) thus need to know which parts to reduce (except RTX 3060 and 8TB HDD)

Prefer high frame rate 140 fps on 1080 resolution as main monitor during gaming since I often use 2 old 1080 monitors as media monitors while gaming (play music, watch youtube @1080 etc). Not for streaming. Never for any work/mining.

Please be completely honest in the types of parts to change as it's a very important build. I want to get rid of waste and bottlenecks.

Thank you for your sharing your wisdoms.

The hunt for a GPU continues

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:08 AM PDT

Hi guys please let me know if this isn't the correct place to post this and I'll delete this. I've been looking for a GPU for my build since January with no luck. Originally was looking for a RTX3070 but financial things have changed so now I'm looking for a RTX3060. I have two bots notifying me with availability, I have web alerts and am on discord looking. No luck. Is there some specific places. bots, techniques that you can tell me to see if I can finally finish my build. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Low GPU usage Low FPS on all settings Borderlands 3

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:20 AM PDT

    Hi!

I have a Zephyrus G15 laptop with a 3070 and 5900hs. My GPU usage is never stable and never high enough to give me a high and stable fps on Borderlands 3. The CPU usage is nowhere maxed and the laptop runs benchmarks fine. It's plugged in and is using the highest performance setting. How can I fix this issue?

    Local Bioinformatics Workstation

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 01:48 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I need a workstation for grad school in a bioinformatics program. My background research tells me that I'm generally looking for: 32GB RAM minimum, 64GB/128GB preferred. I'm open to a build where I add RAM over time as needed. I'm currently leaning towards starting with 64GB and evaluating if anything feels throttled or bottlenecked before committing to 128GB If I do this, am I understanding correctly that I should increment 2x32GB RAM at a time?

For the CPU, I believe more cores are better than faster processors, but obviously both are important.

Either Windows OS with a Linux VM or vice versa.

Primarily working with R, Python, command line, potentially Matlab.

I'm not currently doing graphics intensive work, (but it's possible I will in the future).

This is my first build so ease of installation and putting things together is a consideration.

Also some light gaming. Mostly MTG Arena, but occasionally play Starcraft, Diablo, Civ.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

This is a workstation before it's a gaming system. 1080p at 30fps or better would be nice, but I'm not willing to sacrifice the primary computational focus of the build (or significant budget) for improvements to gaming experience.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Up to 2.5K, but keeping this under $2000 would be fantastic. $USD$. In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Super newb questions. What is overclocking? Can this build do it? Should this build do it?

How do I know if I need a BIOS update for this build? Is this something a beginner can do?

Is it worthwhile to setup a hybrid storage? Something like 1TB SSD and 2-4TB HDD? Does this significantly complicate the build/installation? Is it a better option to just move anything unessential to an external drive to keep the primary SSD clean?

I already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard. I also have a spare HDTV for a dual screen setup and may consider 3 total screens in the future. Do I need the sound card if I just need basic audio (Youtube/Netflix etc)? Will I be able to use the HDTV for that sound?

Thanks Reddit. Hoping to be a little less overwhelmed from all your collective knowledge.

New motherboard+cpu+cooler. Just take old parts out and swap them or something I need to do before that?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 01:28 PM PDT

So I just got the B550-F Gaming which has a „Amd Ryzen 5000X Desktop Ready" sticker on. With that a 5900x cpu and a nh-d15 cooler.

And would like to swap them with my old mobo, cpu and cooler. It is the tomahawk b450, 2600x and stock cooler I belive.

What do I look out for?

A friend told me I might have to do some bios stuff but as the mobo says 5000x desktop ready that will not be an issue.

Appreciate any help on this, has been 2 years since I built the pc itself :)

    4x8 sticks of 3600MHz or 4x16 sticks of 3600Mhz?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:11 AM PDT

So I'm looking to buy a new set of ram, probably going with the 4x8 set of 3600MHz CL16 Trident Z RGB. But before I do, is there any benefit of a 4x16 set? I read the overclocking ability on those are better, due to them being double sided Samsung B-die? I think that's what I read, but I also read I can most likely OC the 4x8 set of 3600mhz to 3800-4000Mhz anyway. I have a Dark Hero so it'd support it.

Also this is to pair with either a 5600x or 5900x, if anyone has a pair of ram they'd like to suggest to go with either CPU I'd appreciate it.

Confirmation Dell Support is Trying to Force Downgrade my Desktop

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 01:46 PM PDT

Hey Everyone, to be blunt, I really do not know much about PCs and Desktops. Which is why I bought what I understood to be a really solid all-in-one desktop from Dell a few years ago. Fast forward to now, and I had to send the machine in for repair for multiple reasons. The machine is under warranty, but the part they need is backordered until September. They are trying to get me to accept a refurbished machine. I have provided the specs of both below. Please correct my noobish self if I am wrong, but the machine they want me to take is a significant downgrade? I did a bit of research, and the graphics cards they are trying to give me is meant for basic laptops from 2017? Any advice, feedback, etc. is muchly appreciated.

The prices are off, the PC actually costs around 1000€, at least where I live. I just don't know if I should wait for prices to drop even more, so I can get a better GPU.

Does resetting PC cover everything DDU removes too?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 01:00 PM PDT

This may be a noob question but I figured I'd ask. I am upgrading my PC but I forgot to run DDU or uninstall graphic divers before resetting my PC.

I'm currently upgrading to a new motherboard, cpu and new GPU of the same type (evga 3090) my last GPU bricked. My SSD and HDD are the same.

When I install my new mobo, GPU, cpu, and new windows 10 key do I still need to worry about using ddu or does that not matter anymore considering I have reset my PC?

Help fresh install of Windows on pc and it's stuck

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 12:50 PM PDT

I would add a picture but it didn't give me the option so I'll describe it best I can.

    Ryzen 5 5600x

    Corsair vengeance 3200mhz 16gb 2x8

    Samsung 970 500gb m.2

    2tb Seagate

    MSI MAG b550 tomahaw

    RM 750x corsair

Gpu I tried my 590 and the owners GT 710 and had the same issue both times.

I loaded the pc and it posted into the bios, I had the usb with windows in and set it as the primary boot option, I tried with 2 different usbs once the first one didn't work (#1 Samsung 64gb 3.1, #2 HP 32gb 3.0) and the first time it loaded up the windows logo, but the bottom two corners looked like they were in the bios? But the rest was normal, I thought sure, sometimes when booting pcs from usb these visual bugs happen but then they usually go into the windows install menu, which this didn't. I waited 10 minutes and nothing. I tried swapping the ram, using once stick, using a different gpu and using a different PCI slot, nothing. Everything shows up in the bios and so I'm clueless as to what to do. Now when I try to boot it doesn't have the corners as the bios, just a bunch of horizontal lines on the bottom 1/3 of the screen. Absolutely clueless as to what to do.

Also sorry for any mistakes or anything I really don't know how to use Reddit

I have 700-800$ to spend on an upgrade but I have a problem

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 12:03 PM PDT

Hello everyone, this is my current system and I need some help.
    MB - GIGABYTE GA-Z170-Gaming K3
    CPU - 6700k
    GPU - GTX 1070
    RAM - 2x8 Kingston Hyperx Fury 3200MHz
    PSU - Fractal 650W Gold

So I want to start upgrading my pc components bit by bit and I want to start ofc with the MB and CPU. The problem is If I buy anything above a 10700k I bottleneck my GPU not much but I bottleneck it and also, will I need a new PSU and RAM or I'm fine buying just the CPU and MB for now?

I would appreciate any suggestion on what to do and some CPU/MOBO combos to buy, not just Intel / AMD as well.

    PC randomly shuts off

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:57 AM PDT

I built my pc about a year and a half ago with no issues for the first year, but in the past few months I've noticed my pc just randomly shutting off. It will happen usually about a minute after starting my pc and will do this repeatedly for a hour or two every time I restart my pc, then I'll have no problems for about a week.

I have replaced my power supply to no avail.

dont think its thermals because it usually happens after starting, not when I'm in a game

I've tried switching power plugs but they are on the same breaker (it's not tripping though)

    Troubleshooting XMP

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:50 AM PDT

Am trying to troubleshoot why xmp won't work correctly right now. Was told to try and slowly increase frequency from stock speeds to see how far I can get until a stability issue hits.

Can someone walk me through on how to do this? Do I keep the timings the same as I up the frequency? Should I up voltages as I go? Is there a tool I should use a dram calculator to figure out what to punch in? Should I use an onboard memory testing tool like Memory Try It ! in my bios instead?

The specs of the system currently are:

    5600x, b550 tomahawk (bios vers Ams.a60), and 16gb of Crucial ballisitx 3600 cl16 18 18 38

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: Saw that in my bios that my command rate is set to 1 automatically, but heard that 2 might be easier on the ic's of my mem (I believe they are micron rev-e). Thoughts?

Treating myself for getting my first job - Need advice

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:47 AM PDT

So I'm finally earning my own money and gaming is pretty much my one and only pride and joy. My current rig was built like 7 years ago and I'm finally gonna upgrade.

I got a 1080ti in my current pc so I'm gonna use that for my new pc for now until the 3080(ti) gets cheaper or something I'm not sure. Regardless let's just say the gpu will be my 1080ti.

I wanted to go all out and splash on an end-game pc (for gaming and streaming) but after talking with some people I've sort of amended some specs that I'm gonna look for.

    For now, the plan is:

    • (I really want a) Lian Li Dynamic case
    • Ryzen 9 5900x (was originally looking at 5950x)
    • Dark Hero motherboard
    • some 850W PSU (was originally looking at corsair HX1000)
    • EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Vision D-RGB (which I can't get in my country nor can I get delivered till October or something so looking for AIO suggestions. I initially wanted NZXT Kraken z73 but apparently it's pretty garbage. Maybe a corsair AIO idk)
    • Gskill tridentZ 3600Mhz 16x4 CL 14 (I initially wanted 2x32 and to get another 2x32 after a month or so but apparently too much RAM actually hinders performance)
    • 2x Samsung 980 Pro
    • some 2TB SSD just for movies and shit
    • 10 Fans, 3 bottom (intake), 3 side, 3 top, 1 back - Total 6 intake 4 outtake - EK-Vardar EVO 120ER D-RGB (500-2200 RPM) - (but I don't think I'm actually able to get them here either so some fan suggestions would be appreciated)
    • some Strimmer Plus Lian Li 24+8 cables but that shouldn't make a difference.

My main concerns that I need advice on are AIO coolers, fans, and with this rig should I save up a little more and just go all out with custom cooling instead of an AIO? Will it really make a difference? I know it'll look cooler but is it worth it? Should I go for an AIO then after a few month install custom cooling and sell the AIO 2nd hand?

Thanks in advance. I'm really looking forward to this and I just don't wanna run into any issues and make sure each part sorta makes sense.
