Low Fps on most games I play (apex, warzone) with Ryzen 7 3700x and a zotac 3070?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 07:14 AM PDT

I've dug and dug on the internet but cannot find anything. On warzone playing at 2560x1440p native resolution at normal settings I average about 90fps? I have 16gb of ram. What should I look into as far as upgrades go? Any other comments or ideas to try greatly appreciated.

What's your PC specs and what games are you playing?

I'm just genuinely curious about everyone's PC builds and how it relates to the games they play!

I helped a co-worker build his first gaming PC last weekend. It was honestly the most fun I've ever had doing something in a long time

    Posted: 27 May 2021 10:40 AM PDT

Now let me preface this by saying simply: I've never built a PC for myself either. That's right, I was a newbie myself. I have a laptop that does everything I need it to and that's it. I don't like playing video games on PC either, I'm a console person. Go ahead, nail me to the cross /s. But, I do have some experience in replacing PC parts as I work the help desk at my company. I can replace any needed hardware inside a desktop as needed, even a motherboard, and get it all working as needed. Even if a PC goes down in our office, I can usually diagnose what the issue is fairly quickly and replace what I need if we have the parts.

So my co-worker, Jin, put out an e-mail to our help desk group asking if someone could help him build his first PC once all of his parts come in. I stepped up and said I'd help because...well, I don't really know why. Jin is a sweetheart and just one of those people that it kills you to make fun of even in a genuinely lighthearted way. So last Saturday I get to his place and bring my own toolbox and legit the first words to me after he said Hi were "Oh good, I only have a screwdriver". Now that wouldn't be a problem if he also didn't mention that he wanted to build a fuc--ng desk also. But again, because I'm so generous, I helped him.

We spent about an hour and a half putting together his desk and it was a lot of "Jin hand me that...no not that one, the other one", stuff like that and he was having a laugh. But, I guided him through building and he put the legs on all by himself like a big boy /s. And eventually it was all done. Now onto building the PC!

So we both at least knew how to assemble parts on the board and I let him put everything in place. But, his biggest mistake was wanting to put the board in the case immediately, and I stopped him. The reason is because what you want to do is check and see if any of your parts are DOA before putting it all in the case and having to take everything apart again. So we jumped it by just turning on the PSU and shorting some pins with a screwdriver to get it to POST and get to the BIOS screen on his monitor. Thankfully, everything was working fine and we finished the build in about an hour, even got him sweet RGB lights inside the case. And then to thank me for helping him, he bought McDonalds for me.

Honestly, this is probably the most fun I've ever had doing basically anything for the longest time. I don't really spend time with other people outside of work. I come in, do my work, then leave. End of story. It was nice to I guess break the monotony for once and do something productive with someone, and learn some stuff along the way. If I had one friend in this world, the closest would probably be Jin.

Potential memory issues. Unsure how to correctly troubleshoot them.

    Posted: 27 May 2021 07:10 AM PDT

    Hey all,

Over the past while (probably a year) I've been experiencing what I believe are memory issues with my PC. I've only since noticed it more and more after I've been working from home.

I don't think it's affecting anything other than Google Chrome but I do experience a lot of issues installing or updating nearly all video games I play as well to the point where they become corrupted and require full re-installs or are absolutely unplayable. Some examples from most played games below (if it helps):

    • Call of Duty - Unable to run at this point. Crashed to desktop constantly if install goes through or the install is corrupted
    • WoW - Normally okay but often forgets it's installed or requires constant repairs (repaired twice in the last 2 months)
    • Dota 2 - Constant repairs needed after patches (repaired 2-3 times in the last 3 months)

    The Chrome issue:

I receive the 'Aw, Snap!' crash very frequently. Some days it's good, other days it becomes a challenge to get my days work done. I have gone through every step available to me in this checklist for the issue: Aw, Spawn! Crash fix suggestions

    Recent PC Changes:

I recently installed 2 additional RAM chips (~2 months ago) which I was hoping would fix the issue but unfortunately no changes positive or negative occurred.

I'm not entirely sure what the next step would be to try and figure out what's wrong. I was thinking that the only realistic next step would be to just pull out the old RAM chips and see if my pc runs fine without those but would rather not if there's another way to figure out what's wrong. I am the walking embodiment of Murphy's law so if it's going to break it will break when I touch it or use it so always wary of making big changes.

I have saved a recent DxDiag if that would help at all.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated as this has begun affecting my work rather than just my play. Thanks for taking the time to read all this!

32gb Ram crashes games and browsers but 16gb doesnt?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 03:01 AM PDT

    Specs that matter:

    I7 10700K

    Z490 A Prime

    2x 16GB CL19 3600MHZ Trident Z RGB

Whenever i run 32gbs (ON XMP) my stuff crashes constantly but when im on 16gb only it runs perfectly fine. Ive tested both sets and neither are faulty so im thinking they just aren't compatible for some reason

Would the Gigabyte G27Q be a good upgrade from a BenQ Zowie XL2730?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 07:09 AM PDT

I got the XL2730 a few years back, used, at around $350 local price equivalent. It served me well but after seeing more recent IPS and VA panels with HDR, the TN panel on this is starting to look hideous in comparison. Likewise, its monitor drivers are borked on my RTX 3070 and is limited to 120hz refresh because 144hz crashes the monitor.

I'm thinking of getting a new one on an affordable level, and every review site for a sub-$400 panel where I live points to the Gigabyte G27Q (incidentally I recently bought a Gigabyte G5 laptop) as the best one in this price range. Would you recommend this monitor as a replacement? I don't actually need the 1ms response rate on this BenQ anymore.

Keep RX 550, go with GT 1030 or wait to get a GTX 1650?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 11:29 AM PDT

Hello guys and probably girls, I currently have an RX 550 2GB and I want to know if I should switch to a GT 1030 same 2GB if it's better or just wait with the 550 until November (my birthday) to get a GTX 1650.

Why GTX 1650 and not something else, maybe better? Because who knows if the prices of GPUs will get better or even worst. In my country, Romania, we have a GTX 1650 at about 500 dollars. I've been looking since this madness at GPU prices over here and it keeps getting worst every day.

I don't really want a used one, even does are expensive.

Is it worth it: MalwareBytes Premium and Privacy?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 12:06 PM PDT

i recently ordered my first Windows laptop after years of using a MacBook Pro, and i would like to ensure that my PC is protected from the start. i understand that a lot of people recommend sticking with Windows Defender (as well as pop up blockers like UBlock Origin and "common sense") and occasionally scanning with MalwareBytes Freemium. but, is worth getting MalwareBytes Premium and Privacy for added protection? i thought the added VPN service would be great because i've read it is good to use one when using public WiFi. also, could i run Windows Defender and MalwareBytes Premium at the same time? be good to hear your thoughts!

Upgraded power supply and graphics card, and breaker has tripped 6 times. What's going on?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 11:51 AM PDT

Hey guys, I upgraded my 2070 super to a 3080, and my 600W gold power supply to an EVGA 750W gold power supply. I had my old build since September of 2020 with no issues.

I got my new one set up and was eager to use it, but a couple days after using it, the breaker tripped. I reset the breaker and continued to use it the next couple days, and it happened again. That cycle pretty much occurred a couple more times until one time I reset the breaker and minutes after turning my pc back on it tripped again.

I have a device that measures wattage, and while I couldn't measure the wattage when it actually tripped, it seemed to be in the 200-300 watt range most of the time. After the last time it tripped, I plugged in an 850W toaster for about 3 minutes (on the same circuit), and had no issues at all.

This leads me to believe it is either:

    1. my wiring was terrible (which yes I was in a rush and did a poor job at cable management) which somehow messed up the breaker.
    2. I purchased a faulty power supply (new from Amazon though)
    3. I got a faulty graphics card

Anyone have any ideas what this could be? I'm thinking about trying my 600W power supply that I had no issues with and keeping my 3080 plugged in for the time being.

NOTE: I do use it to mine with NiceHash during downtime, but even then the most it uses is around 300W.

What GPU should I use? 3070 or 6800?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 02:02 PM PDT

I was able to buy both a 3070 and a 6800, both arrived like at once

lmao i've been camping stock trackers long enough

Which one should I use for my pc build?

I bought the 3070 at 880 usd and the 6800 at 1120 usd

The model is msi gaming x trio 3070 and the asus tuf oc 6800

Which one should I keep? How do the cards compare when considering overall gaming performance, ray tracing, mining, streaming, etc?

I know that the 6800 is a lil bit better in performance, but is the small performance leap really worth the extra monies

Is it okay to reuse a computer case that had a motherboard die in it?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 10:10 AM PDT

It was shooting sparks and smoking and such, I'm sure it was a motherboard failure but I'm unsure if it would have damaged the case components. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Looking to build my first gaming PC, feel way over my head!

    Posted: 27 May 2021 01:44 PM PDT

Hello Reddit,, I've been gaming on a mediocre laptop for years until I dropped it and it broke, and I finally have some money to put towards a desktop!

I thought I could learn to build by myself by reading enough posts, watching enough videos, but while the physical act of putting it together seems easy enough, I feel super overwhelmed by all of the possible part combinations, and I'm just unsure of what I actually NEED.

My budget is a tentatively flexible $2,000.

I don't play a ton of new, big titles, but I do like some.

Bigger games I DO play are GTA Online, Elder Scrolls Online, Red Dead Online and largly modded versions of Skyrim Remastered, the Fallout series, and Sims 4. I'd like to be able to play Rust. I can't think of any other games that aren't old or small, indie titles off the top of my head.

I don't expect to be able to have the 4k graphics with Ray Tracing or anything, I'd just like to be able to play my games without them looking glitchy and freezing.

I'd appreciate any help I can get!

The new case, which should I get for an ITX build

    Posted: 27 May 2021 01:22 PM PDT

So a while back I got an NZXT h1 case, and now after looking at all the thermal issues and fire hazards, and lack of upgradability due to restrictive GPU thermals and sizes, I have been looking at some other ITX cases. The ghost s1 looked pretty appealing and nice to me, but I'm not sure how the thermal performance is, I would like a fairly powerful system while maintaining a pretty quiet noise level, if anyone knows anything about this case or has other suggestions that would be greatly appreciated. Not opposed to undervolting either.
