iMac died so I stuck it in my oven and built a new killer PC for the first time

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 10:29 AM PDT

    Album: https://imgur.com/gallery/oMOWnJM

My first ever PC build and man what an upgrade. A bit of backstory: I had been thinking about building a PC to replace my 2011 27" iMac since gaming on a Radeon HD 6970M is less gaming and more like watching a slideshow while a fan blows hot air into your face. Unluckily (or luckily depending on your pov) my iMac grey screen'd and died 2 days before a huge presentation/exam I had been preparing for all month. That was sorta the nail in the coffin and I decided to start buying parts. I did manage to fix my iMac by baking the gpu in my oven (lol) so I just took it to work and now it runs fine.

I went wayyyyy over the top with my build for what I really needed but since this was my first build and likely my last for a long time, I wanted to make sure it was worthwhile. Yes I know I bought overpriced Corsair parts. But they had good reviews, I know the brand and I wasn't really interested in saving ~150$ (realistically) buying brands I've never heard of. The 6800XT was my first choice, but it was literally the only card I could find so it was an impulse buy somewhat.

Anyway, this machine absolutely slaughters my old iMac. I used to get like 28fps on Deep Rock Galactic and now I get like 220+ fps with the 6800XT. I'm really satisfied with everything I bought, expect for Windows (man so frustrating, but this is obv a personal preference) and the LG 32GN650 monitor. The monitor itself is great: 32", fast refresh rate, viewing angles are perfect, great contrast; but it arrived with two dead pixels. Since I had to order it from the US to Canada, returning it for a RMA is a huge pain and would cost ~100$ in shipping so I've just decided to keep it and live with the vary small defect.

Huge thank you to the buildapc community and to the wise breaded LTT.

Hi! So I'm currently buying parts for my next PC I've already decided to go with the WD Black SN850 1 TB were I will store small apps and programs and ofc Windows but realized that I might actually need another storage source, I was thinking about buying another M2 since my motherboard supports its but wanted to ask you guys if there's any downside to go double M2? Should I go with a SATA one as my secondary instead?

New BUILD suddenly doesn't POST after successful repair

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:01 PM PDT

    Hi r/buildapc,

Last month I helped my brother with a brand new build, and I loaned him my used RTX 2070 Super after I got a RTX 3070 (lucky me, right). I will post the build details below. The CPU (Ryzen 5 5600X) required a BIOS update on the motherboard which was made really easy using Q flash.

After completing the build, he managed to use it for about a week without issues. He played COD, completed Jedi Fallen Order, everything was good. Then one day, he started experiencing crashes during games. After a crash, the PC would boot loop for a while. After time it would boot into windows again, but while gaming would crash and then go into the boot loop. I took the build to Micro Center and the diagnostic was pretty quick and easy, the nice dude there showed me in person that it would crash with the current RAM installed, but when he installed his testing RAM kit, it worked fine, and was able to play games and run benchmarks. This was great, I picked up a new RAM kit (the same exact one that we were replacing, maybe a mistake in hindsight) and installed it at my apartment.

After replacing the RAM, the PC booted reliably every time. It ran taxing games like Cyberpunk, and graphics benchmarks like 3DMark TimeSpy with flying colors. I even fixed up his cable management, and set up the XMP profile in the BIOS (and tested thoroughly afterwards. I was ready to hand the PC back to him with full confidence that it was repaired, and he would be able to get back to his regular gaming... until he brought it home and now it won't even POST. I helped him pack it into his car, it was well secured and didn't move or jostle too much on the ride. He plugged it into a single monitor (which I had been using with that very GPU for almost 20 months), his keyboard and mouse, and the surge protector, and the thing won't even display anything. At this point, nothing had changed or been touched besides the fact the PC traveled from one house, to another. The PC does the death rattle where it runs the case fans at full speed and the display detects no signal.

Since the first unsuccessful boot, he has tried different power outlets, different monitors, removed all peripherals, removed and tested each RAM stick one at a time, re-seated the GPU, re-seated the RAM, re-seated each power supply cable, and pretty much everything we can think of after years of building and troubleshooting gaming PCs. We're at a loss, and I am just disappointed because we just went through a similar process before replacing the RAM, and now we're in an even worse position where the build refuses to even output a display signal. Is it possible that our motherboard is somehow breaking each new RAM stick we put into it?

    Build details:

    CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X

    Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M DS3H micro-atx

    RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3200 MHz

PSU: CORSAIR RMx Series 650W 80 Plus Gold Certified Modular power supply

    SSD: WD Black SN750 M.2 2280 1TB

Case: Cooler Master MasterBox MB311L ARGB

Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce 2070 Super Black Gaming

I appreciate any help or advice that you can provide, I might take it back to Micro Center if we cannot find a solution on our own soon.

Is it worth to add 200$ from gtx1660super to rtx2060?

PC keeps crashing due to different timing RAM, don't know how to fix it.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 12:53 PM PDT

So I've accidentally bought 2 different timing kits of RAM, Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 3600. The system keeps crashing at 3600 but works stable at 3200. Any advice on how to get a stable system at 3600 would be greatly appreciated. I don't know how to change the timing, and even if I knew, don't know what to set it to. The only difference is the timing of the kits. Thank you in advance!

Edit: XMP 3600 isn't stable, 3200 is stable. The whole build is 2 months old, second RAM was bought a week ago. The motherboard is a MSI X570 gaming edge wifi. The first set is 19 19 39, second 22 22 42 if im not mistaken. Don't have a lot of knowledge/experience, don't hold it against me if I wrote something wrong.

    5950x / Dark Hero Nightmare...

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 07:44 AM PDT

Over the past 6 months, I've been building my "mid-life crisis / COVID lock-down" dream computer. It has taken a while, but I have sourced the following parts:

    CPU: 5950x

    MOBO: Asus Dark Hero

    RAM: Crucial 4x8 3600 CL16 (BL2K8G36C16U4WL)

    GPU1: EVGA 3090 FTW3

    GPU2: EVGA 3090 FTW3

    STORAGE: 2 x Sabrent NVME 4TB

    PSU: EVGA 1600W P2

Everything is watercooled, with an EK monoblock and EK blocks and backplates on the 3090s. Everything is stock settings -- I haven't gotten anywhere near overclocking anything yet.

I've been building PCs for 25 years now, and this is by far the worst experience yet.

At first boot, BIOS did not see GPU2. I was able to install Windows, but was then met with a litany of problems. Black screens, random reboots, BSODs, and the most prevalent -- post code 97, especially after a restart. This is what I have documented so far:

    Post code 97

    Post code F8

Post code AA and system hang

    Blue desktop and freeze

    BSOD - VIDEO TDR FAILURE

    BSOD - DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION

    BSOD - WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR

WHEA Event 18 -- APIC ID 30 cache hierarchy failure

More often than not, I am seeing code 97 and video TDR failure.

I assumed the problem was GPU2, and in doing some research on forums, it seemed there were many reports of EK backplates killing FTW3 cards. I unplugged the power to GPU2 to see if that was the problem, but the crashes and post codes persisted. I updated BIOS, drivers, Windows, etc. but I couldn't get a stable system. At this point, I drained the loop to test the suspect GPU with the air cooler on a separate system, and it was confirmed dead. RMA went out, and EVGA sent out the new card which I received a few weeks later.

I put everything back together, reinstalled the block, and while this time the second GPU was recognized by the BIOS and OS, the crashes remain and GPU2 is significantly underperforming -- under 10 fps on Port Royal.

These are the troubleshooting steps I have taken:

    Updated BIOS to 3501

Rolled back BIOS to last stable release

    Memtest86 - ok

    AIDA64 - ok

    PRIME95 - ok

    CTR2 - ok (golden sample)

Unplugged power to GPU2 to test the following on GPU1:

Timespy - passed (18000+ score)...but instant BSOD when system returned to desktop (event 18 -- APIC ID 30 CACHE HIERARCHY ERROR)

Port Royal stress test - FAIL on first pass

    GPUZ render test @ gen 4 PCI settings - result x8 4.0

    GPUZ render test @ gen 3 PCI settings - result x8 3.0

Unplugged power to GPU1 to test the following on GPU2:

    Timespy - passed (3400+ score)

Port Royal stress test - quit first pass at <10 fps

    GPUZ render test @ gen 4 PCI settings - result x8 1.0 (210mhz core, 1219 mem...)

Pulled all but one DIMM and swapped them all out individually

Finally, I replaced the PSU with a 1200W -- GPUZ now prompts a multi GPU dialog box before the rendering test, and both come back ok… then BSOD TDR failure, and post code 97 on restart. Crashes persist.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on here??

Bad motherboard (maybe second x16 PCI slot?) Bad GPU (again)? Bad EK block on GPU2? All of the above?

Or...could this be CPU / DIMM / PSU related?

Have I missed any additional tests or troubleshooting I could do before completely disassembling my loop (third time now…), sourcing an AM4 CPU and mobo, and testing everything again outside the build??

Has anyone else had issues like this with any of this hardware and fixed it??

Every program in Windows 10 becomes unresponsive, and all sound cuts out.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 11:12 AM PDT

After about 30 minutes of use or so, Windows just kind of "soft freezes" where I can't exit out or open any applications, and all audio cuts out. Although the apps themselves are still sort of loosely functioning, (I can still click around and see that I'm clicking, however clicking does nothing but show the feedback of the little press animation on whatever button I'm pressing). I can't even turn off the pc without holding the power button. SFC /scannow found some corrupt files and fixed them, but then this started happening again and this time, sfc finds nothing. I've updated windows, tried to repair it, and I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and sorry for my lack of ability to explain things. I also notice that it happens more often while using voice chat programs, such as Mumble and Discord.

P.S. I'm not sure if this sub is the right one for this, but r/techsupport wasn't very helpful. Thanks.

If you give a nerd a GPU, he's probably going to need a...

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 06:45 AM PDT

Earlier this year I started a multi-phased approach to upgrading my (i7-4790k/1070) PC. Thanks to a friend, I was able to get an RTX3070, which is so large, that I had to upgrade my case, and so powerful that I needed a new Power Supply. So we'll call that phase I of my rebuild plan.

As I'm sure you may have guessed, my CPU is now a bottleneck, so now I've started to look at Phase II: Motherboard, CPU, Cooler, (RAM?).

Here's where I need your help. I've watched too many hours of outdated info on the Intel/AMD debate, and I've hit a wall with searching for updated answers. Maybe my fellow reddit nerds can help.

I'm a small (hobbyist) streamer that plays PUBG, CyberPunk, RiskofRain2, (and retro adventure games tonight if you want to hang out). I also do some work on my PC, but nothing intensive.

The most significant takeaways I've heard from YT, are

    • the difference that extra cores/threads makes on the 10700 help with overall processing power
    • the 5600's architecture and hyperthreading is better for multitasking like streaming.
    • the cost difference was a huge differentiator (the 10700 cost significantly more when the 5600 was released, now it's cheaper ($70 less than the 5600 msrp), and more available.
    • the B550 mobo has been having issues with USB connections on the 5000 series AMD chips, but a new firmware update this month should resolve that. (I haven't seen if this issue exists on the more expensive x570 mobos)

So the conventional wisdom seems to be that AMD (if I could get one) would be a slightly better fit for my user profile (streaming/gaming), but that it might be a marginal difference over the $80 value that a 10700k offers.

Tell me if I've misunderstood something, or if you all have experience/ideas on how this

I'm so happy! I'm finally able to upgrade my GPU.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 02:28 PM PDT

I've had my 1050 for a while, but with 2GB vram, 1080P is a struggle. After a long time, I finally managed to find a used RX 570 for 250$ cad. I just wanted to share, because I'm really happy and looking forward to this, it was really hard finding a fair price, but it seems like people on the used market are selling their cards at lower prices.

Already have a pc built, but need to modernize. Which of these parts are in most dire need of upgrade?

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming is the primary use for the build.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I dont need 4K or anything. Right now ive been trying to get Apex Legends to work on my PC, but i cant even get 60fps with all settings on low. Ill want that to run at at least medium settings, 60 fps. Also, ill want to run the Mass Effect Legendary Edition at 60 fps on at least medium settings as well. Making 100% sure i never dip below 60 fps is what matters most.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $400ish

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA.

Above is part of my current build. I dont remember my case, monitor, or what my psu is, and im not in a position to check them at the moment, but ill upgrade the psu if more wattage is needed. This is a Windows 7 machine.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I know that the mobo, RAM, and CPU are ancient, but im looking to keep the same mobo if possible. Im not very confident in my ability to transplant everything over to a new mobo, so if i can just get better stuff compatible with my current mobo, id prefer that.

    Water vs air cooling?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 02:19 PM PDT

This is probably a super commone question, but I'm currently designing a build and was wondering which to go with. Water cooling is most likely overkill for my planned system (r5 5600x), but I've heard that they keep things cooler and quieter. Air cooling on the other hand is probably smarter for me but I've heard can be very noisy? Sorry if any of these questions are stupid, this is my first time building a pc. Thanks for your time!

I finally got a 3090 off of BestBuy, what do I do now?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 12:01 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

I bought 3090 off of the BestBuy drop today and wanted to upgrade my PC for the longest time. I mostly play FPS games and league of legends occasionally. I know the 3090 is a huge overkill for gaming, but with whole GPU shortage, I'll take what I can get at the moment.

My current rig is ancient (except for the GPU). I am upgrading from a:

    • i7-4770k
    • GTX 1080
    • 16GB DDR3 RAM

My current monitor is the XG-2703-GS.

My current part picker selection is here

Gaming primarily. I play FPS games, and LoL.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I have a 1440p, 144hz monitor. I'm open to monitor suggestions for a higher refresh rate as well. Game settings doesn't matter as long as I can get the most performance out of it. I play Apex at all low settings right now at 1440p.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1200-1500? (not including GPU)

I'm open to monitor suggestions as well. I just bought the 27LG850-B and 27LG83a as well (haven't received them yet, but bought them to test out).

    B450 + Integrated Graphics??

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 09:12 AM PDT

I've been planning to build my very first PC for streaming and all around content creation, but obviously that's come to a pretty decent standstill. Integrated graphics in a CPU are seeming more and more like a good idea. What Ryzen chip would be a good fit in this build??? Originally I was gonna go for a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU and an AMD RX580 GPU, but that just doesn't seem to be very probable. Help?

    MOBO: MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max PSU: Gigabyte P GM 750 W 80+ Gold RAM: G.Skill Ripjawz V 16 GB (2x8) DDR4-3600 CL18 Storage: Crucial P1 1 TB M.2-2280 SSD + Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" IHD

    Deciding between ryzen 5 3600 and i5 10400

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 02:07 PM PDT

Hey, I'm building a pc for my girlfriend , it will be used mainly for gaming, web surfing etc, nothing professional like editing/rendering.

I wondered which of these 2 would be a better pick?

Not trying to start an Intel vs AMD war, I checked benchmarks , reviews , still not sure which one to pick.

They are both very capable (I have a 7700k in my rig so they both mop the floor with it)

The i5 would be a bit cheaper, and I could theoretically upgrade to a 10700 someday.

The Ryzen is a bit more expensive , RAM for it would be a bit more expensive, but I could upgrade to a Ryzen 5000 someday, so upgrade path is better.

Her system will have 16gb of RAM and a Gtx 1650 for now , since prices are crazy and I already own the 1650.

    TLDR - title basically

PS - do either of them need an aftermarket cooler?

EDIT: Based on your answers, I could go for a 560 board with an i3 10100f. I think it's enough for her , for now, and it gives me more options going forward.

    The i5 is around $150-160 , the i3 is $100 , so the $50 difference can go in a B560 board instead of a B460

    3700x or 5600x?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:53 PM PDT

Hello, i am building a pc and need to decide on a 3700x or a 5600x. I plan on pairing it with a 3070 or 3080 depending on price and availability. The main purposes is streaming, some gaming, lots of vr, and school. I have lots of pros and cons about both cpus but cant decide. Pros of the 5600x is faster cores and better gaming performance. The main con of the 5600x is it only has 6c compared to the 8c on the 3700x. Pros of the 3700x is it has 8c and does better in productivity applications. Main cons of this cpu is slower cores and a bit worst in game. By school I mean 3d modeling for my technology class. Please help me decide on a cpu.
