What limits the speed potential of nvme-ssd's for loading games? Posted: 15 Apr 2021 12:14 PM PDT On paper they can load multiple times faster than regular ssd's, but in game loading tests, they basically run at equal speeds. They're always a little faster but just by a few percent compared to the total load time. Read times are no longer the issue then. Is it graphics loading? Would a much faster gpu or cpu speed it up? Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:54 PM PDT I've noticed that when I enable game mode on my 2nd gen threadripper the minimum frame time of most games increases drastically (20-40fps) because only cores directly connected to the pcie lanes of the GPU will be communicating over the GPU. Do the i9 skus of cascade lake also have low latency between some of the cores spread on other numa zones, like threadripper? For example, does the i9-10940X need half of it's 14 cores disabled to keep latency low between the GPU's pcie lanes and the cores? It's hard to discern this in reviews because looking at the major sites, they typically test computing tasks which don't depend on communication between the gpu & cpu, and the average frame rates reported in benchmarks don't take stuttering into account. There are a few deep dives out there into infiniti frabric on the threadrippers but info on how cascade lake's cores are connected together is minimal in comparison. [link] [comments] |
