This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Gift for Boyfriends PC

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 07:17 AM PDT

Edit 3: His CPU is running at 80% usage, not temperature. Apparently it fluctuates. His temperatures are normal so he doesn't think it's overheating. He's already factory reset, updated most of his drivers, and monitored the CPU cooling. However, none of those have solved his issue.

He normally gets high CPU usage when playing video games or anytime his CPU is under a large load.

He plans to take it to a professional and have them run a diagnostic to see the issue. He believes it could be a faulty CPU.

Again, thank you so so much everyone for all of your help. Your community is amazing! My inbox is flooded so I'm gonna send him the post to look through all of your recommendations!

    Edit 2:here are his specs

    MB: ASUS Prime Z370-P

    CPU: Core I7 8700K

    GPU: Nvidia 1080

He just replaced his old power source with a EVGA 850W G5 GOLD

I'm gonna start off by saying I know absolutely jack about PC's hence my coming here for advice.

So my boyfriend just yesterday replaced his power supply because his computer was crashing and cpu was running poorly. That helped, but still didn't fix his cpu issue. I think he said it's running at 80%, I could be wrong.

I wanted to surprise him with a new cpu and I found one that seems good but again I have no idea. It's the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-core, 24-thread unlocked. He has a Cyberpower PC. Would this be a good option? Let alone compatible with his PC?

I dunno if I should include that he uses it to stream video games.

Edit: thank you so much everyone for your help and kind words! I just did an update post with all of his specs :)

First of all, I didn't not expect that many responses.. thank you all so much for your help and kind words!

I posted a few hours ago about getting my boyfriend a new CPU for his PC. Everyone said I need more info such as his current CPU, motherboard, etc. so here it is!

    MB: ASUS Prime Z370-P

    CPU: Core I7 8700K

    GPU: Nvidia 1080

He just replaced his old power source with a EVGA 850W G5 GOLD

Before he replaced the power source, his pc was crashing and the CPU was running high. He said it was a bit better after the replacement but still running at 80%. Last night while streaming it even hit upwards of 100%.

Any help on how we can improve it is much appreciated! :)

First post got no attention. Please help with a home dedicated gaming server? <$1500

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 05:49 PM PDT

I want to build a home gaming server. I've never really put much thought into this so I'm not exactly sure where my budget should be going. So far I've been using rented hosts for games.

The types of games I host are MMO type survival games and I would like to be able to reliably host up to 200 players on the server. I would likely only be hosting one or two games at a time on the machine.

Where can I save money/improve my build?

Edit: I saw a few posts assuming that I use a preconfigured host already and that I wouldn't understand the software side of things. I want to assure everyone that I do not use a preconfigured host. I rent a normal dedicated Windows Server and configure everything myself. I am familiar with using Windows Server OS, writing the batch files, dealing with windows firewall, etc.

Suggestions on updating 2014 era build

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 08:51 AM PDT

I currently have an i5-4690k, 16gb ddr3, 750ti, tons of disk space (both SSD and hdd) that I use as my primary PC for gaming, emulation, development etc... I also have an i3-6100 with 8gb ddr4 in a headless Nas/Plex server (running sonarr, radarr, qbittorrent-nox, jackett, glances, cockpit, ombi, and more).

My thoughts on updating my build would probably be to move my 750ti over to the new PC for the time being untill I can afford a 1660s or something similar. Then get rid of my server (sell the CPU/Mobo keep the ram just in case) move my server setup (Nas, Plex, etc...) To my i5-4690k to squeeze more life out of those parts.

I'd rather stick with nvida for graphics because I use moonlight often to stream my games over to my psvita or my various rpis. I also use steam link to stream games but moonlight works better for somethings I've noticed.

This is what I'm currently thinking of going with PCPartPicker Part List

    My first pc!

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 07:41 PM PDT

I built my first ever gaming pc for $800! I could not be more excited. Today I spent 3 hours working and when I was done I had quite the scare. The system didn't post the first time but when I tried pushing to see if any of the cables were loose it seemed to do the trick! I would just like to thank all the wonderful people on this subreddit for being patient and answering my questions. You guys are truly the best! Now I have something to do during quarantine and I can even put this on my college application 😉.

    First Build, Gaming PC

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 10:08 AM PDT

Hi, this is my first post after following this thread for a while. I just moved to a new flat and I finally have space for my own modest man cave. I used to play on my laptop but after 10 years it has served its purpose and then some. The fan is busted, the graphics card no longer works, it takes 10 minutes to boot so I decided to take the leap and build my own PC. It's going to be strictly for gaming and some light video editing.

    Specs:

    PCPartPicker Part List: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/88pqn7

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor (€170.00 @ Amazon Deutschland)

Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard (€129.99 @ Amazon Deutschland)

    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory (€76.89 @ Alternate)

Storage: Western Digital Blue 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive (€63.99 @ Amazon Deutschland) Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (€62.29 @ Mindfactory)

Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB GAMING OC Video Card (€407.80 @ Mindfactory) Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400A Digital ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply: Corsair RM (2019) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (€99.89 @ Alternate)

    Monitor: ViewSonic VX2458-mhd 23.6" 1920x1080 144 Hz Monitor (€159.90 @ Amazon Deutschland)

Disregard the vendors and the price. Most if not all of the parts will be ordered on MindFactory.

I'm aware of the 5700XT driver issues but most of them seem to have been resolved.

I went with the Phanteks P400A. I read some reviews and it seems to have decent out of the box air flow, which seems to be important for these cards since they tend to run hot. Does anyone have any experience with this case? Is there a better option for a similar price?

I also considered buying a 5700 and then flashing the bios to 5700XT but decided against it. I would much rather just fork over the extra 50 euros than deal with any potential problems.

Is 650W enough for these specs and some future upgrading or should I go with 750W?

I chose the cheapest 144hz monitor I could find. I'm not expecting premium grade quality but I'm guessing it should do its job just fine.

If you have any suggestions, comments, advice where I can make improvements, please let me know.

Building a music producing/gaming PC for around $600 USD?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:54 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm trying to build a PC that I can use for music production and for some gaming. In terms of gaming I won't really be playing anything much higher than Fortnite, CoD, league, and valorant. I also already have a monitor and mouse so that budget is for everything else! Let me know if you have any questions and thank you so much !

RX 5600 xt or GTX 1660 Super

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:54 AM PDT

Hey guys! So I'm pretty new at this PC building thing, been wanting one for a while now and after a TON of research I managed to learn everything I need to buy and assemble my first PC, for my specific purpose. But, I did not consider one small thing, I was gifted a Samsung C27F390 monitor that goes up to 72 hz and supposedly supports freesync (it isn't labeled in the box, but it is stated on its website). So after all the research I did I'm just finding out about screen tearing, g-sync, freesync, etc. Which have made me doubt everything.

I was initially going to buy a MSI 1660 Super gaming X, but as I found out Nvidia uses g-sync now I started looking at AMD equivalents and found the 5600 xt to be the best option for my budget and needs. Out of all the brands I was going for sapphire as it is highly recommended but there's another problem, the LED color of the card can't be changed and you guys know how much aesthetics matter lol so I was thinking about MSI as well which raises the price a lot for me because I live abroad and I pay shipping by weight, and this card weighs double what a 1660 super weighs.

Anyways, I've also read that some freesync monitors started supporting g-sync and I saw a Google drive list online. However my monitor was not present in that list. Anyone got it to work? It is important to say that the monitor has only HDMI.

Anyways guys, any advice would be appreciated, should I just go for the sapphire? Any other brand any of you had a good experience with? Could I use g-sync with that monitor?

    Thanks in advance!

    Mid-Tier Gaming-Streaming PC! [1080p]

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 08:59 AM PDT

    Hello dear redditors,

I'm looking forward to upgrade my pc soon, and here I come asking for your advice. Before I talk you about the future, I'll say something about my actual PC built in 2014/2015.

This is the build i'm coming from: CPU : I5-4670k

    GPU : Gygabite GTX770

    MOBO : Z87 EXTREME 4

    RAM : 2*4 GB 1600 mhz corsair

    HDD : 500 GB

    SSD : 120 GB 840 evo SATA

    COOLING : CM HYPER 412S

PSU : ??? Sorry I can't find the model but anyway, I will substitute it.

    CASE : Corsair Carbide 300r

I really love this PC, it never failed me and by reading other people's experience I understood how lucky I have been. In my mind, I was going to wait for series 3000 (and the new consoles, which hardware usually set's the standard for the games of the next years). But in these uncertain times, I felt like this was the right moment to upgrade to a mid-tier pc that could last for 3/4 years. I'm worried about global situation this fall (probably a second wave of Corona will slow the global market of pc component) so I decided to act now. Honestly, I'm a little bit out of touch with the component industry, So I started from a build I saw on Tom's Hardware Italian Forum (Yes, I'm Italian and Building from Italy).

My target is 1080p gaming with ultra settings at 60 fps(minimum). I'll also use this PC to stream on twitch (Not a competitive gamer, so no need for 144 fps). Last but not least, I would like to build something as solid as my previous pc, in terms of bugs/issues between components.

I want to ask your opinion about this build:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600

GPU: MSI 1660s VENTUS 6gb (or similar)

MOBO: MSI B450 A-PRO MAX (or similar)

    RAM: 2*8 Crucial Ballistix 3600

This is the core of the build. I'll now ask you few things about the missing components.

    1) Is it fine if I keep using my old case (corsair carbide 300r)?

    2) Can you suggest me a solid PSU for this machine?

    3) Is it still possible to keep my Hyper 412s for cooling?

    4) Which 1660s Should I choose?

    5) Which SSD should I buy nowadays?

I know, I really asked you a lot of things. Thank you for helping me.

Black screen and GPU 100% fans

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 10:08 AM PDT

Firstly my build which is no longer than 10 months old:

    Asrock Z370M

    i7 8700

    Corsair 2x8GB RAM at 2800mhz

Asus RTX 2070. (4-5 months old)

Cooler master VS650 PSU (Its 3-4 years old but I never used it until 9-10 months ago)

    Razer Viper wireless mouse

Crucial MX500 SSD 500gb (Boot drive)

    Crucial MX500 SSD 1TB

    Crucial MX100 256GB

I have had this PC for around 10 months and the GPU for around 4 months and in the last week or so I have been having an issue where my screens would both go black and my GPU fan would go to 100% and I would be forced to restart my PC.. I can still hear sounds but I have no signal.

This first happened maybe 3 days ago when I had a stream open and was playing Destiny 2 and I thought nothing of it.. My GPU never goes above 70c either btw and CPU maxes at 75C.

Today I was watching a stream and launched WoW and the second I entered the main city it happened again in a totally different game and now I am worried/wondering what is going on because WoW and destiny 2 are completely different games in terms of requirements.

I ran OCCT stress testing my PC for 15-20minutes and had zero issues and I ran it again to stress test my CPU and had no issues with anything. I ran Aida extreme as well and had no issues and I also ran heaven benchmark and had zero issues and my GPU never went above 66C.

Edit: I forgot to say this all happened on my old driver version and the latest driver version with nvidia as well

    pc build 1500 - 1600 euro

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 10:08 AM PDT

If u wondering why all of that is with questions and awnser it is because i copied this from my post in an other group.

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

The pc will be used for gaming/ little streaming, video editing and school work (coding).

The game will mostly be triple a and some others like gta v, rdr2, rainbow siege, fps games and more.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
My max budget is 1500 - 1600 euro's if possible something that doesnt have alot off shipping.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
    This week.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

    Tower and monitor

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
    Netherlands and no microcenter.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
    Mouse and keyboard.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Not really maybe later on but not as important.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Alot of storage if possible like 2 TB+.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

    • a case with tempered glass if possible and maybe a little rgb. But something that does match not just random colors.

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No ill get that myself so no need to put in budget.
    Extra info or particulars:
I'm hoping for a build that can run 1440p games on good settings.

I dont have a pcpartpicker list. And if possible if u put a list put it in euros thx :D.

    AMD stock cooler question?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 10:50 AM PDT

I'm going to buy Noctua NH-U12S tomorrow, but I am worried about removing my stock cooler. I have read some stories about CPUs sticking to coolers and when removing the cooler pins on the CPU get bent. I want to avoid that happening. So my question is: How do I remove the cooler without lifting my CPU out of the socket? Should I twist it, just pull it up or smth else....?

Any suggestions for this build? Thanks!

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 12:31 PM PDT

So Im building this PC, will be using my old 1070 until the new 3xxx release and see if its worth upgrading. My needs are gaming (not particularly high end) and general use for my Masters (data science w/ AI). If you have suggestions, such as 'hey spend an extra couple hundred and buy this future proofed X or this monitor Y' Id be open to suggestions, as my budget is flexible for a few hundred pounds. If you think something is overkill, also happy to reduce. Just open to advice really.

A little side question, I have a Rode NT1A and a steinberg ur22, when i play audio out of headphones plugged into that steinberg, is that the same as having an aduio card in the motherboard? You always need an audio interface for this mic right?

    Thanks,

First build - any advice/insight would be much appreciated

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I'm looking to really get back into gaming after falling behind the times a little bit. I've only ever had consoles in the past, but am in a weird place between getting a PS4 or waiting for the PS5. However, based on what I've been reading, it seems like a PC could suit my all-around needs better, but I know next to nothing about PCs and their parts. I'm looking to mostly play already released games like GTA V, Skyrim, RDR2, Witcher 3, as well as emulating some Gamecube games on Dolphin. I'm also interested in potentially streaming gameplay at some point so something that could handle that. Other than that, maybe some DJ software and just general web browsing. I'm definitely not looking for 4K 140fps best of the best graphics, but something that will run all of the above games and most others at at least 1080p 60fps. I'm looking to get several years out of this PC and to use it as my primary gaming console, and would love for it to have room to be easily upgraded in the future, in case I'm looking to play a newer, more demanding game.

Ideally, I would like to spend around $800-$1000 (unless my needs can be met for even less, I'm not sure). Could maybe spend a little more if it's justifiable. I'll be needing all peripherals as well, so I want to make sure I budget accordingly.

PS I know the consensus on prebuilts is that they're generally overpriced and not worth it, but I am still open to them as well if anyone knows of some good value builds that would be upgradable in the future. My biggest concern is the actual building of the PC and damaging one or more of the parts

    First Gaming Build Parts Pick

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 08:25 AM PDT

Purpose: 1080p 60Fps gaming is primarily what I would like this build to do, however I am not sure if I'm going about this right considering this is the first time I've ever built a computer. I primarily plan on playing games like DayZ, Escape From Tarkov, R6, and possibly some triple AAA games in the future.

    Below is the parts list

Any criticism of part choice is welcome and encouraged.

    Thank you very much.

Professional Data Science Shock Resilient Build

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 09:56 AM PDT

I was looking into setting up a local server to run projects off grid in an RV for professional data science work. Trying to stay under $15-20k.

Beyond just putting the beefiest components in there, I need the system to be resilient to the shocks and bumps that come with off grid/rv living. Any thoughts? inb4 run on AWS, as this will be a very niche use case where I'd have access to power but not nesciearly internet.

    Upgrade from i5 6500/1060 6GB to R7 3700X/2070S.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 01:31 PM PDT

    Hello, i'm planning to get an upgrade from i5 6500, 24Gb @2133MHz, 1060 6Gb to r7 3700x, 32Gb @3200MHz, 2070 super.

I'm keeping my drives from my current build, also keeping the cpu cooler (Be quiet pure rock (150W)) and will borrow some fans from it too if needed.

I'm currently gaming on 1440p and with most recent games I start feeling struggle to even get 60 fps in a lot of games unless going to very low graphics.

My goal here is to be able to play 1440p at high/ultra in most recent and future games at 60+ fps, and the build being future proof too. I'd appreciate your thoughts, tips about the build, will it fulfill my hopes,etc..

Also I'm not very sure about the PSU wattage, the results on the calculators are kind of chaotic so I'm thinking either 850W 80+ Gold or 750W 80+ Platinum but feel free to help me on that, would appreciate.

Here's the parts listing: PCPartPicker Part List

Do you think it'll be a good build for 1440p high/ultra gaming at 60+ fps? What changes could be done otherwise?

Thanks for the help in advance.
