    Sceptre 30 inch Ultrawide 1080p 200Hz 250$ monitor review

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 08:15 AM PST

Cheap, right? Anyway, - (tl;dr at the end)

So I was losing my sanity shopping for PC parts on black Friday, when a post on r/buildapcsales came up - "30 inch UW 200Hz curved monitor for 230$". That was pretty shocking, considering similar items start from some 350-400$, let alone 200Hz. I need to make a small remark about the price: the actual price is 300$, but it's usually on sale anywhere from 230 to 270$, so calling it a 250$ monitor seems fair. Long story short, it had very little reviews, but I bought it anyway, for 230$. Amazon link.

The obvious - yes, it works and works fine. More in-depth:

    Packaging -

    • It's not fancy, but the packaging was actually surprisingly good. I shipped it overseas from the US, and it came fully in-tact. Also, it had some included plastic covers for places where screws go in. And even an included screwdriver. It's more than I would reasonably expect from a 230$ monitor. A for packaging.

    Build quality -

    • Decent. Again, it's not fancy, everything but the stand is plastic. But yeah, the mount is metal, the plastic quality is pretty okay. The mount seems fairly sturdy. In a word, I can't complain about it, it's once again more than I'd expect for 230$.

    Image quality -

    • I have to warn you that this is my first half-decent monitor, so I might be wrong about this. But it seems to be really solid. Good blacks, bright whites. Can't tell how accurate the colors are, but the Amazon page says it's 90%+ SRGB, and I'm inclined to believe it, even 95.
    • It's 2560x1080, not 1440, so that might be a con for some people. But subjectively, it looks quite crisp, I can definitely say it's not a big deal at all. Especially as I'm coming from a previous 768p monitor.
    • Trailing (or however you call the motion blur thing) is okay. It's definitely not good, moving text is quite hard to read. But it's, again, not in any way distracting or noticeable unless you look for it. I also haven't run it in 200Hz mode yet, so it might be significantly better then, too.
    • Not a single dead pixel

    UltraWide.. ness? -

    • I have to talk about big, beefy, long-ass UW monitors: They're great. Seriously. If you don't have an ultrawide yet, just go and buy it. I don't care if you don't have money or a computer for it, just buy it NOW. Yeah, UltraWide is surprisingly nice. Most videos and many movies/cartoons/anime have black borders on the sides, but it's not distracting at all, even in the slightest.

Features, gimmicks and other nice-ities -

    • Well, first and for most - it's 200Hz. I have to tell you that I haven't used it in anything more than 75Hz just yet, but reviews say that it's perfectly good. Yay for high refresh rate! It's I'd say the main argument for this monitor.
    • It has three HDMI ports and a DP port. So if you need image-in-image, or side-to-side stuff from multiple sources, this monitor got you covered.
    • Did I mention it's UltraWide? Yeah, go for it, it's seriously great. 21:9 Master Race.
    • Curvature. It's nice, makes the focal distance roughly the same across the whole monitor, as well as filling in a bit more of your FOV.
    • Sick-ass red lighting in the back. It looks dope if you're into lights and stuff.
    • It has a VESA adapter. So if you have a good VESA stand already, you'll be able to mount it out-of-the-box.

    Cons and non-nice-icities -

    • There's one thing they straight up bullshited about. They say it's a "30 Inch Ultra-thin bezel monitor". It's true.. sort of? The bezels are actually pretty darn thin, 1cm at most. But the actual working monitor space isn't 30 Inches. There are dead spots from all sides (except for bottom), about 1-2cm thick. It's not monitor space, it's just turned off. So it's what the bezel would've covered up if it wasn't "ultra-thin bezel". Technically correct, in reality it's a 29-ish inch. Quite annoying, too, though more psychologically, than practically.
    • The monitor only tilts up-and-down a bit. No vertical adjustment, no horizontal turning, no pivoting. It's very limited in it's movement.
    • Some reviews say it was DOA or died within a month of use. Can't confirm or deny, but Scepter is a budget brand, so it's to be expected, be warned.

TL;DR - It's a really solid monitor, especially if you can get it for the 230-250 range. If you're building a mid-range PC that can do high refresh rate UW 1080p, definitely a good choice.
