Why did Nvidia stop producing high end last gen Gpus given the shortage of the new chips?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 01:33 AM PST

In the CPU world, even though its tough to find a Amd 5000 series cpu, there are plenty of options from the 3000 series. In contrast, why did Nvidia stop producing (or at least don't start mass reproducing) last gen GPU chips which use a different manufacturing node? I know there are rumers about 2060 and some other lower end chips, but that seems like a very half hearted attempt. The market/AIBs will gladly accept any 2070/80 gpu chips given the current situation.

What are your thoughts on fingerprint scanners on the power buttons of phones?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 02:41 PM PST

I think the Sony Xperia phones was one of the big proponents of this, where the fingerprint scanner is on the side, integrated into the power button. I never had an Xperia phone but I always thought this was a good idea compared to having it on the back or having it where the home button would be, since when you pick up the phone, your finger should naturally rest on the power button (assuming it's thoughtfully laid out), and you can also use it when the phone is lying flat on a table, which you can't do with it on the back.

I know some people are worried about privacy since then you need to use the fingerprint scanner if you want to use the phone, but those people will probably want to buy a non-Android Linux phone like the PinePhone or Librem anyway, and if those get a fingerprint scanner in the future, it will probably have a physical switch that disconnects it electrically, like they do for the cameras.

Personally, I like them over the more common back of the phone location or even the newer under-screen ones, and never under understood why they didn't take off, but what do you think?

    SSD internal bus?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 11:14 AM PST

Do SSDs have an internal bus for internal data shuffling or do they only rely on the extrnal (Sata) bus?

I bought an SSD adapter. It appears to run at Sata 2.0 speeds. I know cheaper SSDs use write caching and then shuffle the data. Does the flushing of the write cache use an internal bus or does it rely on sending the data back to itself via SATA bus?

Right now, I have a midrange SSD in it (MX 500) as I wanted sustained write speeds, but if the incoming data speed is limited and internal data shuffle speeds are unimpacted, it would probably make sense to swap it out with a cheaper SSD.
