    Dell and Samsung parts

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 12:03 AM PST

Hey! Do Dell laptops utilize Samsung monitor parts or display parts? I need to know cuz I have this Dell Inspiron N4050 and I opened it up to make an external monitor out of it. I need to know what kind of stuff I might have to buy to do so.

But first, clear my confusion. Do Dell laptops utilize samsung monitor parts or display parts?

    SSD corruption on power loss

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 03:43 AM PST

As most of you certainly know, power loss can destroy data on an SSD.

Not only uncommitted data in DRAM and cache can vanish but the way cell reprogramming works also means on-disk, flushed, data can be corrupted.

Enterprise drives are usually provided with supercaps to give the drive enough juice to flush its cache. Client drives apparently provide at least data-at-rest anti-corruption capabilities in firmware.

    Two questions:

    • Are the in-firmware protections good or marketing fluff? I understand that such protection, even if effective, are only meant to avoid destroying data-at-rest: that's fine, if it works... I get it that most client SSDs can't possibly stay that fast and provide string guarantee like full cache flush (the amount of caps would be insane) but at least making sure an ongoing write operation finishes without destroying existing data would be greatly appreciated.
    • Why can't I find any external solutions? Like dedicated outputs in PSUs (SATA) or supercaps on the motherboard (M.2).
