A story of how cleaning my old PC gave it an early grave Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:39 AM PST I finally built myself a new PC. A long time coming, as my previous rig was from circa 2014. My new build went flawlessly. R5 3600, 32 gigs 3200mhz ram, 1 TB m.2 drive. I reused my old graphics card from my old build (cause GPU prices are CRAZY), an R9 280. I'll upgrade the GPU at some point, but its an OK placeholder. While I was taking out the graphics card on my old PC, I noticed how dusty everything was. After extracting the GPU, I pulled out the air compressor and gave everything a quick dust off. All was good with my new build, installed linux mint and windows 10 in dual boot. Since my previous processor had integrated graphics, I had planned on using it in my garage connected to a cheap TV for playing videos. I booted up my old PC to grab some files off of it and transfer them to my Pi server and... and fans were not spinning. After some basic trouble shooting it seems I toasted the motherboard while cleaning out the case. By blowing air into the case and making the fans spin, I must have shorted it. Power supply still works, optical drive, SSD drive, all work. But alas the heart of the computer is no more. TLDR/Lesson learned: If you are going to clean a computer with an air compressor;
Edit: some clarification. I was using an air compressor, not canned air. I bet in some alternate timeline I used canned air and the computer still runs. The compressor is most certainly overkill but I've used it before to clean out my computer's and laptops with no consequences. I'm also speculating as to the cause of death. Some of you said it could be the moisture from the compressor. I live in a pretty dry area (~10% humidity) and always bleed out my compressor after every use. Still can't be sure on anything other than computer worked, and now it doesn't. Maybe the computer knew it was being replaced 😂 [link] [comments]
Spinning a PC Fan DOES NOT Kill Anything Posted: 07 Feb 2021 11:54 AM PST I just read this post today about breaking a computer dusting it. As a computer engineering student, The amount of absurd "old builder's tales" being confidently smeared around every time the topic of dusting your PC comes up is absurdly high, so I thought I'd address some of them. Disclaimer: my experiences are that of a hardware engineering student, and an intern writing code and messing with electronics in manufacturing and office settings. I'm not an industry professional yet, so there are some grains of salt to be taken. Compressed AirAn air compressor is a big, heavy, expensive thing you keep in your garage for powering heavy duty air tools essential for mechanics. The air comes out of a hose, not a little straw, at high speeds. You're probably not using this to clean your PC. If you are, that's fine. Just be very careful, and dust it from like 3ft away. Amazing for old PCs that haven't been cleaned for a decade if done outside.
Small features on a board like vias (little conductive holes that run through your board allowing wires from different layers to connect), and metal pads that components are soldered to are major points of weakness. The heat from soldering already has the potential to warp and loosen them. If you hold a big ass compressor to your board you could probably blow off the weakened components. MoistureI don't know enough about air compressors to comment on water filters. However, moisture can form in several ways while cleaning, but they're not a problem. When gasses are compressed, they get hot. When they decompress, they cool down. The air that comes out of the canister gets colder the longer you use it. If the temperature drops below the dew point, the cool air can probably condense moisture out of the air and deposit it onto your board. This is not a major problem, if even one to begin with.
If do see water, it's probably not water. Not all fluids are water. I've observed times while cleaning extremely dusty computers, where spraying an icy can of air with the straw right on some surface, this pool of liquid forms but evaporates within a second or two. This is most likely the contents of the can, the compressed gas in liquid form. It doesn't require cryogenic temperatures to achieve, nor is it conductive. Now the area I'm more familiar with: Static Electricity
Or
What the hell does that even mean?? This shit gets parroted every time dusting comes up. It doesn't do jack shit. You're free. Suck away. Suck as hard as you can. Suck as much as you want. Your PC is grounded on so many points. If something arcs to it, it has to be charged negatively or positively. A vacuum is not going to charge the air before the air and dust passes over your motherboard. The charge of dust is not going to change when leaving your board, sucked into the vacuum, because your PC is grounded on so many points. Your vacuum is probably grounded at the same source as your PC as well so this is just moot. Hearing that static discharges are on the orders of 1000s of volts automatically throws all rationality out the window it seems like. What's more dangerous? You standing at the bottom of a 1km tall cliff, or somebody dropping a weight off that cliff? Static discharges are typically high voltage but low current, therefore low power transfer. Static discharges are not death sentences either (ft. ElectroBoom, an actual Electrical Engineer and Linus). People don't seem to realize that a good punch requires a good current flow,
So? Do you get more shocks in the winter when the air is dry or in the summer when it's humid?
Technicians cleaning off flux from solder jobs use old ass brushes all the time. Toothbrushes, little painting brush with a trimmed end is excellent and it's what I use, those brown paper towels etc. These things are not nearly as delicate as people think. We don't live in space or atop the Himalayas (high altitudes mess with electronics in many ways). Now for spinning the damn fan...
That's a DC motor. DC motors are dead simple. You hook up a battery to it and it spins. PC fans are BLDC (Brushless DC). It's not nearly that simple. It requires additional electronics to drive it such that
Yeah, if you can bypass the control circuit of your BLDC fan. THEN your power out would be power in. But that results in a 3 phase AC generator. Not DC.
You're not going to appreciably damage the bearings in a fan with a 10s, 20s, 40s, 80s spin. Your fans are probably gonna outlast your build by a long ass time unless you got them from some sketchy & cheap online source. Concluding Notes
Do not jump to conclusions like this. Jesus christ. I have a dead K70. I measured things on my multimeter. I don't know what's wrong with it, but it's not necessarily "fried". Be careful with cables and connectors. They're a lot more finicky than you think. I spent 2 whole days during internship just to read a catalog of connectors in order to select the most appropriate ones. There are literally hundreds of thousands of them, they're elaborate af, and there are engineers that spent a significant portion of their lives, over multiple decades designing these things. Make sure they're not loose. Reseat them if necessary.
See? That there is already a major change in this system. You can't guarantee that you didn't blow dust into some of the PCIe connectors, or set a cable loose. Front panel IO is horrible for this. In addition, Ryzen is extremely finicky with memory anyway. I've had experiences with my own Ryzen system running non-QVL memory, where reseating them and blowing out the dust in the slots made it boot again. DDR4 runs on a much high clock frequency over DDR3 or 2, so I feel like that makes it much more susceptible to looser connections. Honestly, I'm not that happy with the DIMM sockets. I find that there's a few degrees of literal wiggle room. A little loose for something that runs this fast. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:40 PM PST Hello! I've recently gotten an old pc from a relative and was wondering how exactly I could upgrade it. I am on a budget so nothing too expensive if possible! Currently the processor is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz and the video card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti. I have 8 GB of RAM which I think is enough for me for now. Any suggestions on what I should upgrade the 560 Ti to? [link] [comments]
RTX 3070 Underperforming in games and unreliable. Posted: 07 Feb 2021 11:11 AM PST I have just finished my first PC build: I turned it on, did not mess with the BIOS because I don't want to ruin anything, however, my RAM is running at 2666MHz, I didn't think much of it In games such as Minecraft and Rocket League, the game is very choppy, and frames such as 20-60. When I download a texture pack and put RTX on for Minecraft, the PC runs better than when it's on low load. I also noticed that the GPU doesn't run at high %, it instead runs at 10%-35% and the CPU runs at 70%-85%. I have had no temperature issues. I think it's just the fact that my GPU is running only at around 15%, unless I but RTX on or download a big resource pack. Basically, my PC is running too slow to what it meant to run at, it freezes and frames are very unreliable. The harder I make render (like adding a texture pack) the more reliable it is. I am pretty sure it is a software problem, at least I hope so. Is it the ram, limiting the CPU, thus bottlenecking the GPU? [link] [comments]
I don't even know what the MSRP is supposed to be. Posted: 07 Feb 2021 10:57 AM PST I've been looking to buy a gpu since the 3000 series was launched and as most, haven't been able to secure one. I keep checking on sites, and just realized that I don't even know what the MSRPs are supposed to be anymore. I know how much the FE cards are supposed to cost, but most board partners can be $100+ extra with all the extra features they add to it. Is there some sort of master list with all the different SKUs from all the different brands that shows the true MSRP? And maybe the MSRP + any extra due to tariffs for the US customer? Thanks. PS this is beyond insane that we have to have posts like this, the market is completely bonkers atm. [link] [comments]
Compatible Motherboard For a Ryzen 5 5600x cpu Posted: 07 Feb 2021 12:54 PM PST I'm fairly new to pc building and I am wondering what motherboard is compatible for a Ryzen 5 5600x because people are saying b550 or b570 motherboards are compatible with Ryzen 5000 series but on pc part picker it doesn't say its compatible, and if put either a b550 or b570 motherboard it gives a compatibility warning and says bios update might be needed. However when I put a b450 motherboard it shows that everything is compatible. I don't understand maybe I'm dumb. [link] [comments]

Don't know what to think of the Corsair h100i RGB Platinum Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:00 AM PST Conflicting reviews on this. Tom's Hardware doesn't like it as it's worse than other 240mm coolers: https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/reviews/corsair-h100i-rgb-platinum-cooler,5905.html Then the OC3D review praises it to the sky stating it's similar to the 360mm versions: https://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cases_cooling/corsair_h100i_rgb_platinum_and_h115i_rgb_platinum_review/4 KitGuru although not a glowing recommendation state it's a good choice comparable to other coolers in the same price range: https://www.kitguru.net/components/cooling/silas-newman/corsair-h100i-platinum-rgb-cpu-cooler-review/6/ Cooler will be for a 5800x. A decent choice or would an air cooler like the NH-D15S just be a much safer bet over this Corsair. I can't go higher than a 240mm AIO due to case reasons. I probably fried my whole PC for some RGB (stupid !) Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:57 AM PST First off, yes I know I'm a dumbass ! So basically, 2 months ago I built my very first PC (https://be.pcpartpicker.com/list/4n7WK3).Everything has been great so far ! I've played some Planet Zoo, Control, RE7, Cuphead,Rocket League at Ultra settings 1080p. (and Ray-tracing with Control) But I wasn't too happy with the temperatures ! When playing Control for examples, my CPU temps would go in the high 80's, low 90's ! So quite close to the max temperature for a Ryzen 5 3600. Therefore, this Thursday, I decided to buy an AIO online (MasterLiquid 240) to improbve the AMD stock cooler. And I bought an extra ARGB case fan (SickleFlow 120 from CoolerMaster). The items arrived yesterday, I wanted to mount it as fast as possible. So I removed the 2 case fans (that I relocated at the top), removed CPU cooler, cleaned the thermal paste, added some, placed the pomp on the CPU, installed both fans on the radiator, plugged everything right. That took more time than expected but it was functionning ! I told myself "I will deal with the RGB and ARGB tomorrow". I ran some benchmarks with the AIO and improved airflow and it really helped. In TimeSpy (3D Mark), I gained 1% GPU performance and a bit more than 4% in CPU perfs ! So I was really glad. I ran Control for 30 minutes (with everything maxed) and I never got higher than 68°C ! So it really helped ! The ARGB from the added fan was working properly (plugged in MoBo) but for the RGB, it's another story. It was working but it was only RED and I wanted to be able to change the color with a software instead of using the little RGB controller. First I tried to follow the manual (so I connected RGB to Molex, so to the PSU). But I figured I should plug it directly to the mobo ! So unplugged the PC, unplugged the Molex from the PSU, then placed it in the motherboard. At this point, I don't even remember what I exactly did (even though this was like not 24 hours ago). Long story short, yeah, like you can imagine, I tried to plug/unplug the RGB to the MoBo WHILE THE PC was ON. Had I waited the day after, I probably wouln't have made this mistake, but yes, I did exactly that (It was 1 AM, and I felt so close to the end result). I tried a couple times to plug and unplug it unfortunately. The PC didn't die at once, it just kind of restarted ? I don't know. But since then, it won't even post. When I press on the Power button, the PSU does work (but how well ?), I can see the light from a Phanteks LED strip and the LED from the power button and all 4 fans seem to be alright, cause they're spinning at full speed. But it won't post ! No BIOS no nothing, black screen with "no source". I probably fried couples components but I don't know which. I really hope my GPU is alright but I doubt it ! I didn't know you could damage a whole PC just for plugging some RGB 4 pin header. Yes I know, lesson learned, all my fault (it's written in the manuals that you should turn it off first !). I don't know what to do right now, feeling really stupid and down of course. No I don't have another motherboard or PC to test every component. Need some advice and/or help. Thank you very much. I'm in Belgium and ordered most of my components from the Netherlands (online, because it was cheaper than Amazon !) Edit : Please help guys ! Don't know what to do ! Which route would you go, AMD vs Intel, Render and Gaming Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:42 AM PST AMD Version: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/mNWPGq Intel version: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/LJppMv They'll be run with an LG 27GN950-B 4k monitor for the rendering side of it but I don't need anything more than 1440p gaming. I can't go higher than around $2600 CAD because with the 13% tax where I live, that's bout $3k all told. So what do you think, which one? [link] [comments]
Green lines across screen. Shut down when GPU under load. Bad GPU or bad PSU? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST Just got this thing. Worked fine for a week. Then suddenly I noticed when I was away for a bit, when I came back, it wouldn't wake but would restart just fine. Then it started shutting down during a game and reboot with these green lines. Reinstalled windows thinking maybe it was a new update. Worked for a minute until I tried to test it with OCCT and it just shuts off within 5 seconds of starting a test. So I don't think its a driver issue because I was fully update on everything when the problem began and it has persisted after a fresh reinstall. I can use it just fine until it has to do anything GPU demanding and then it shuts off and reboots with green lines. If I let it rest for a bit, it'll boot without the green and work fine again. Build is:
I'm really hoping it the power supply. I know 600w it a little low for a 3070. I'm running out to grab a 700w from Best Buy to see if that makes a difference. In the meantime, any ideas? [link] [comments]
PC Stops Outputting Video Randomly Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:03 PM PST Specs: Ryzen 5 3600 16GB Ram MSI B550-A Pro MSI Gaming X Trio 3060 Ti Corsair CX750, Bronze 80+ PSU ----------------------------------------- Was browsing the internet, and the video suddenly went black. The RGB was still on, and the fans were still running but it was as if the HDMI cord was unplugged. ----------------------------------------- I've tried: Unplugging and plugging for 1+ min. Resetting CMOS. Trying a different outlet. Reseating RAM, placing only 1 RAM stick. Reseating GPU, and placing it in a different PCI-E slot. A different PCI-E power cable. A different HDMI/DisplayPort Cable, and multiple monitors. A new PSU, higher wattage. ------------------------------------------ The possibility for a faulty GPU has been ruled out, as I placed the GPU in a friends PC, and it worked fine. Prebuilt Gaming PC vs Building a Gaming PC Posted: 07 Feb 2021 12:58 PM PST Hi Everyone, I'm a bit of a newbie here, having built my first PC 4 years ago when I was only 13 with the help of my father. He gave me a budget of $2500 and looking back, I realized I spent it on very useless aesthetics that ended up not increasing performance at all. Now, I've decided that I want to sell my current PC and upgrade to a new one. However, with GPU prices skyrocketing and there being virtually no chance for me to get my hands on a super nice GPU, I heard from many that buying a prebuilt would be a much better choice. I'd like to ask for some advice regarding everyone's thoughts on whether I should build my own PC or buy a prebuilt, and if prebuilt, what is the most cost-efficient and reliable? Best, [link] [comments]
Do you need the original boxes for your PC parts if you want to RMA/return them? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 12:54 PM PST Hi everyone, I want to make one of those cool PC part box posters, however, but obviously, I need to cut the boxes for that. Would I ever need the original boxes for a return/RMA? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Ryzen 5 5600x cooling question Posted: 07 Feb 2021 12:48 PM PST Should I buy a new cooler for it or is the stock cooler good enough? I'll be using it for 1440p gaming. [link] [comments]
Cats spilled water on Desktop Pc Posted: 07 Feb 2021 02:08 AM PST Exactly what the title says haha, I heard a crash and liquid spilling in the middle of the night. As any person would do I got up and saw that one of my cats had spilt a glass a water and it was spilling off my desk, hitting the ground near my pc, obviously leaving a large puddle. Now, I'm not sure how the water got on my pc, but I must've splashed or moved while in the air and some of it landed towards the power button of my pc. I immediately turned off the power supply and cleaned up the small amount that was near it and opened it up to inspect the inside. There was no visible water damage, no corrosion or wet marks, its very dusty (I should get it cleaned) so I would know if water had landed in there, I think. Sorry that this is such a long read, but my pc is rather empty and I find it unlikely that water would've been able to land anywhere near the components of the pc, of which are on the complete opposite side. I've woken up now i nthe morning, and the pc is shutting off just after starting up for seemingly no reason. Once again inspected the pc for damage, found none. I had a few other issues with the windows search bar closing but I'm not sure if that was relevant. I read a few articles and apparently after this happening a few times, someone's pc never turned on again, which has gotten me incredibly worried. This Pc was a custom made gift from my mam about a year and a half ago, and it would break her heart if I have to tell her that it broke from a cat spilling water near it. Any help would be hugely appreciated, thank you. P. S I can provide any other information that's needed. Cheers [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:24 AM PST I've built my first ever PC today and I just want to share it to you guys! At first, my PC won't start when I turned it on. The problem was the 24 pin connector for my motherboard as it was not plugged in completely. My advice for all the people that is building their PC for the first time, don't be afraid to use extra effort in plugging things such as 24 pin connectors, SATA cables, RAM (plugging my ram was very scary for me but only extra effort is needed for it to be plugged in), and more. This subreddit has been very helpful in giving tips and advice for my first PC build. I want to thank everyone for being so helpful and kind for beginners like me. Thanks everyone! Here are my parts: (Note that the prices indicated in the list is not how much I bought them for, just lazy to change all the prices) PCPartPicker Part List
EDIT: Here's the picture of the build! https://imgur.com/a/PrhbcLD Again I would like to thank everyone for helping me! [link] [comments]
How to know if future Graphics Cards will fit inside a Desktop case prior to purchasing the computer Posted: 07 Feb 2021 02:15 PM PST Hi, I'm new here and could use some help. If anyone could help me on this, it would be much obliged as my level of scope when it comes to desktop computers is very limited. I was thinking of buying a desktop computer HP Omen 25L Gaming PC. However, I read in a review of this specific computer that said that if I plan on upgrading to the latest graphics cards, that I might want to look for a PC with a larger case. So my question is: will I be able to upgrade the graphics card later on to something like the Nvidia RTX3800 with the HP Omen 25L? And if not, how do I know prior to purchasing a desktop computer if future higher end graphics cards will fit inside the case or will be compatible? Specs: Processor: Intel core i7-10700F Hard Drive: 2 TB Hard Drive and 256GB SSD Ram: 16GB Dimensions: 16.51 (W) x 43.3 (H) x 39.44 (D) cm Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 2060 RTX Graphics Card [link] [comments]

Swapping my old GPU to RTX3060 Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:17 AM PST I built a pc 4 years ago with these specs;-Intel i7 6700 Processor- DDR4 ASUS Z-170P Motherboard-16GB RAM-GTX 960 GPUI'm wondering if I could switch my 960 to a RTX 3060? I'm also using a 1080p monitor. What should I do? [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:47 PM PST I want to leave an old PC that I have lying around running as a "server", but I still want it to be able to output to a monitor, and the motherboard has no display outputs for the intel iGPU. It also has no graphics card. So I need the cheapest possible GPU just to get a display output. I want it to be AMD because it just works under Linux with no driver installation needed. What should I get? What's the absolute cheapest option that I can buy brand new? Thanks This computer will NEVER render a videogame. It just needs to output an image to the monitor. Are GPU prices just completely insane right now or am I just an idiot? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:44 PM PST I'm looking to replace a Sapphire R9 280 that I bought like 6 years ago for $200 and to my surprise the price is around $300 on Newegg still. I'll admit I'm entirely out of the loop when it comes to what's current gen and how obsolete that card would be these days. I just want to play some FFXIV without spending more than $400 on a card. Are GPU prices still being wildly affected by Bitcoin farmers? Am I taking crazy pills? [link] [comments]
Neither A1 or A2 slots work on my Z490 Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:40 PM PST I'm not sure if this is an issue with my MOBO, or a compatibility issue between my RAM and my MOBO. I am using Corsair 16GB (2x8) 2133hz. The model # is CMK16GX4M2A2133C13 What troubles me, is my PC will boot with either 1 or 2 sticks of RAM in B1/B2 slots, but will not work at all with anything in A1 or A2. Which means I can't run the proper A2/B2 setup that it calls for. On top of this, many sites list my RAM as being compatible, but the official QVL list on MSI's website does not list my model #... So I am unsure what to do at this point.. do I RMA the motherboard? or do I need to buy/try another set of RAM? thank you for any help. [link] [comments]
