    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

    I'm done.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 02:46 AM PST

Last summer i decided to upgrade my 6 year old gaming rig. (Xeon 1232v2, Gtx 970, 24", 1080p, 60hz monitor). I carefully observed prices and had i known the clusterfuck GPU situation, i would have put all my effort to purchase/preorder a GPU in late summer/early fall.
My first upgrade was an Asus Rog Strix XG27WQ monitor for 419 € ( i am living in Germany). The upgrade was insane for gaming quality (165hz, 1440p, curved). On the other hand my GPU was now under heavy load and couldn't really handle 1440p. I also invested in 5 new Corsair case fans, to get the airflow optimized in my pc case. Before Christmas i decided, that it was a good time to purchase the core components, because prices were good:

    • Ryzen 5600x (60€ above msrp)
    • Asrock B550 extreme4 MoBo (-30€ msrp)
    • 4x8 GB Patriot Viper DDR4 Ram Cl 19 /4400Mhz (-20€ msrp)
    • Seasonic 750w Gold Psu (+15€ msrp)
    • Be quiet Dark Rock 3 Cpu Cooler (msrp)

I overclocked the CPU to 4,45 Ghz (edited from Mhz...) with 1,2 V. I realized, that my Ram purchase was overkill in terms of Mhz and decided to underclock it to 3600 Mhz and set the timings to 14-14-14-30. It took me almost 2 weeks for this, but in hindsight i am really happy, that i put in the effort, because it taught me much about overclocking.

From my old Pc i am still using the case (Cooler Master 690 III), 2 SSDs(250 GB evo960 for windows, 1 TB evo970 for games) and a 2 TB HDD for Data.

And yesterday arrived the final piece: My ASUS Tuf Gaming 3080 OC. It was unbelievable, how much the GPU pushed my system to a new level. Sadly i payed much more, than i wanted (1200€). But after 4 weeks of GPU hunting in 3 discords, refreshing 14 Tabs countless times a day i decided to go for it. I am planning to undervolt it to 800/850 mV with 1800-1900 Mhz.

And that's it. It took me around 5 month, which isn't that bad i guess. I am very happy with the components and everything synergizes good together. I hope you have enjoyed the read, i might add pics later.

Edit1: Btw i wanted a clean build, without any Rgb. The gpu only has a small Rgb display and the Motherboard also has rgb support, but i turned it off.
Edit2: Here are the invite links to the discord servers Part Alert and Stock Radar
Edit3: Here is a picture of my Pc. 1. My son will build a better GPU Lego stand dw. 2. Bonus points, who will find my SSDs ;) 3. I am unhappy with the GPU cables, because they hide the TUF Logo and they have both daisy chains. Are there any solutions, besides putting the cables over the gpu?

    Did my GPU just die?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 09:36 PM PST

Last night I was playing Star Wars Battlefront II and suddenly my monitor said that no signal was detected. I could still hear the game and it sounded like my GPU was still working hard even though it wasn't showing anything. I pressed the power button once and waited for windows to shut down. When I started the computer, I could go into my Ubuntu login in screen just fine, but when I booted to windows I got some random output on my display. I waited to see if anything would happen, and eventually the fan speed of the GPU went super high, went down to nothing, and went super high again. I tried restarting and at that point, nothing was showing up on my monitor.

When I boot up, I can't see anything, and the GPU is cold (although lights and fans still work). The VGA LED on my X570 Aorus Pro WiFi board is lit, meaning that the motherboard has detected a problem with the GPU. Changing PCIE slots did not help.

Did my GPU simply give out, or could something else have happened? This happened without warning, as my GPU was working completely fine beforehand without and signs of problems. My GPU is an EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra.

Edit: I've never done any overclocking or modified the settings of the GPU itself, other than making the fan curve a little more aggressive.

Just visited Micro Center, did I get persuaded to buy something too expensive?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 10:59 AM PST

Don't get me wrong, the deals I got are unbeatable, but everything at Micro Center was cheaper. I was a bit hesitant on the price of the motherboard. I was told that the pc wouldn't be able to connect to wifi without a wifi motherboard.

The salesperson was telling me the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X was the best bang for my buck, even though I could've had the Intel 10400F for half the price. I went ahead with the 3700.

    CPU

    AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

    $299.99 ($329.99 online)

    GPU

    Asus Dual RX 5600 XT

    $359.99 ($595.47 online)

    Motherboard

    MSI MPG B550 wifi

    $169.99 ($189.99 online)

    Power Supply

    PowerSpec PS 650BSM

    $74.99 (not on pcpartpicker)

    Monitor

    MSI MAG241C

    $179.99 ($449.99 online)

The things I'll buy online are the memory, storage, case, mouse, keyboard, and desk (any suggestion for a gaming desk that could fit in a pretty small space is appreciated).

    Edit: $299.99 for the 3700, not $199.99.

    Big power in a small package - RTX 3090 and 5600x in a NZXT H210 (mini-ITX)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 10:59 AM PST

    Imgur album link: https://imgur.com/a/1mV8DLm

Something about stuffing a ton of performance into a small package was very appealing for me when I set out to build my first new PC in 4 years. I love the look of the H210, and after a lot of research, I determined that it was indeed possible to put certain models of the 3090 into it. After a lot of trouble (a set of defective RAM sticks, a defective motherboard case fan header - thank goodness for microcenter return/exchange policy), I finally completed the build. A couple things to note:

    • PCPartPicker says that the EVGA 3090 XC3 Ultra is not compatible with this case. That is false. It fits with plenty of room to spare. Some of the other models that are listed as compatible (such as the TUF) would be a much tighter fit.

    • In the H210, a SFX power supply is best so the GPU has room to breathe. The largest SFX power supply is the Corsair SF750. I measured the power at the wall during a load test, and I never exceed ~550 Watts with the 3090. The 5600x is only 65 Watts, the GPU runs at 320-360 (I also did a mild undervolt), and the rest of the system consumes about 100-150.

    • The system includes 5 fans - 2xNoctua 140mm in the front as intake, 2 Notos O 120mm for exhaust, and 1xNoctua 120mm stuffed under the power supply shroud (with a zip-tie) to give a little more air to the 3090.

    • The XC3 3090 runs hot. With this setup, under load, I get into the high 70s for temps. The fan under the PSU shroud gave me an additional 2 degrees. The undervolt gave me a couple degrees, and replacing my original 120mm front fans with 140mm Noctuas gave me about 2 degrees better temps. Before making those changes, I was getting into the mid-80s. This is apparently normal for the XC3.

    • I have a Silverstone CPF-04 fan hub, powered by SATA. The ITX motherboard only has 1 case fan header, so to run 5 fans, I added the hub. I set the case fan PWM control to start ramping up around 40 degrees (motherboard temp).

    • I used a little cabinet rubber stopper under the GPU to even-out the GPU sag. The included piece with the H210 was too large to fit under the card.

    Lower fps than expected

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST

My problem basically is that fortnite have a lot of fps drops on my recently built pc. I'm think that I should have more fps with this setup. I know there's no problems with this game or the gpu because I played the game with the same gpu in different pc and the other pc specs were equal or worse than mine. I tried everything game, driver, Nvidia software, Windows update. Do any of you have the same kind of problems or similar setups as me, to back me up with some info? It just feels like my hardware has some kind of performance loss. Did I missed something?

    My setup:
    Asus rog strix x470-f Ryzen 7 2700x
    Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz Evga Rtx 2070
    Samsung 970 EVO SSD 500GB - M.2 NVMe Corsair RMX Series, RM750x, 750 Watt, 80+ Gold Certified

Trying to find decent cheap gaming monitor

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 12:27 PM PST

    Hi all,

I'm newer to pc gaming and just bought a new pc. I also want to upgrade my monitor to something decent without breaking the bank. It seems like 2 of the best bang-for-buck monitors out there are from Costco.

    https://www.costco.com/msi-optix-27%22-class-fhd-ips-gaming-monitor.product.100688976.html

    https://www.costco.com/lg-32%22-class-ultragear-fhd-gaming-monitor.product.100682236.html

Is either one much better than the other? I have a 3060ti so the G-sync is nice but I'm afraid the 32" will be too big. Is there anything else that's good in this price range?

    Thanks for any help!

    Upgrade to wifi 6

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:02 PM PST

So fiber is currently being ran to my house! Getting installed Wednesday next week! (Sadly starlink lost the race to who can service my area first). 3mbps to 300!!! Upload .5 to 100! Very excited. So currently I have a wifi 6 router, but gaming a have an Ethernet running across my house and upstairs. It's going to be basically impossible to run a cable in the wall without destroying it. I'd like to get rid of the cane Would it be worth to get a wifi 6 pcie adapter or stick with wifi 5? Thanks!

    RTX 3060 UK price?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 12:23 PM PST

So when the 3060 launches, the price is supposed to be $329, which is around £242. So I assumed that it would be £250, but the price is apparently £300. Does anyone really know what the price? Are these just estimated?

How do you know if parts are compatible

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:50 PM PST

My little brother is looking to build a roughly € 1300 euro pc, and i am trying to help him make the best decisions possible so how do i know for example which CPU's go best with which GPU's and how fast the transfer speed from the RAM has to be in order to support both PU's, im not looking for specific part recommendations but rather at which stats to look to determine wether parts are compatible or not.

He also almost exclusively plays fortnite so i'm afraid he might be overdoing it a bit with a €1300 pc, am i correct or is this reasonable.

    Updating my rig, need advice.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 09:46 AM PST

    Hello!

I am looking to upgrade my GPU from a 2080 to 3080 for 1440p/144hz build. I currently run a 7700k with 32gb 3200mhz ram no overclocks on air cooling. I need advice on which to go with.

I'm looking at either a 3600/x or a 10600/k for the build. Typical day is a game and a video on dual 1440p/144hz displays. Is there any benefit to going AMD over Intel as far as performance goes? I figure there will be a price difference, it doesn't concern me too much.

Lastly, if I stay with my 7700k would there be a noticeable bottleneck? I currently notice a full Ultra graphics game runs 88% CPU and 100% gpu and figured this is a slight bottleneck.

    Thanks for your help!

Old guy needs help cloning HD and picking & building new PC

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:20 PM PST

Hello, I am old senior asking for help building a good desktop that I can use for my business. For my business I have to have many web-pages open at the same time, while using at least 3 monitors (right now I use 2 monitors but I really need at least 3). Currently have an old Dell XPS 8700 that I bought used, with 16 GB of ram, and that ram isn't enough. However, it does have a 1 TB hard drive, which keeps crashing, so I want to clone that drive ASAP! I have an external 1 TB drive and tried to clone the HD in my computer (with free clone program), but it said it couldn't because there are some damaged sectors?? Getting the hard drive cloned is my first priority, and all help and advice with this problem is appreciated!. Then I would like to get a decent motherboard/CPU combo that can support at least 24 or even 32 GB ram - which I will also need to get. I figure I will also need to get a graphics card that can drive at lease 3 monitors. I have several old desktop cases (ATX) so I figure I can use one of them but I won't know if I will need a new power supply until I know what the new motherboard/CPU /Graphics card will need. I am a senior so I don't have a bunch of money, but since I don't do much gaming I don't think I will need a high end machine. My son says to buy a pre-built computer but I can't find one with everything I need for an affordable price. So, is it possible to get a a decent motherboard and cpu, along with at least 24 to 32 GB ram, plus a graphics card that can power 3 monitors (or more), to be used for business computing (not gaming) for around $500 bucks? It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest, but I would like new parts this time. Again, all help and advice is appreciated.

Help matching cpu to a mobo

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST

    Use?

Gaming no disc drive necessary all online nothing over 1080 looking for 60+ fps on AAA titles like cod

Budget? For mobo looking at under 100 so far the rest of the build is $450 mobos last piece.

All parts bought in the US

Mobo: Need help Cpu: i5 3570 3.4 Gpu: Saphire pulse Rx 580 8g Hdd: HGST ultra star 3 tb Sdd: kingston 120 gb Ps: Thermaltake 500w Ram: corsair 4g x2 (i'm going to replace with x2 8g later)

Ok so heres the deal this is my first pc I bought everything except a mobo and cpu bc my buddy had one left over. Turns out he bent the pins on the cpu so I had to order another one (i5 3570) which was supposed to fit my mobo according to the internet. Completely wrong doesnt fit. I'm already over my budget and i'm out of my depth i'm searching everywhere for a mobo but its like I cant find one thats a gauranteed fit. Some of these pc building sites list a million mobos and I got through the top five to ten and none of them are even the same plug and some of the ones with the supposedly same plug (1155) don't even look like 1155. I used one of those pc component sites to match this i5 to my mobo and look where that got me. The mobos outdated and I got the cpu for a decent deal so i'm just keeping the cpu and looking for a better mobo. Anyway thats a long way to say who has an i5 3570 3rd gen 3.4 cpu and what mobo are you using so I can just buy one that is definitely right bc I can't afford to buy a bunch of mobos and keep mailing em back til I get it right. I'm super frustrated any help would be really appreciated.

    Good ATX/MATX cases?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST

For my next build I planned on using the Phanteks P500A RGB, but I think I'll run into some space issues on top of my desk. Right now I'm using the P300 and it's already taking up enough space on my desk. Does anybody know of any MATX/ATX midtower cases that have similar airflow, cable management, and RGB features?

Is it worth waiting for GPU prices to drop?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 08:35 AM PST

I have access to a couple GPU deals locally and wondered if I could get some feedback on holding out for better prices or just pulling the trigger now. I am considering a ASUS GeForce GTX 1660 Super TUF for ~$250, but a few friends are telling me to hold out for better prices in the 2000/3000 series cards. Is it really worth waiting? It seems like there is no end in sight.

For reference, I have an i5-6600 CPU and Warzone is the game I play that would require the highest specs. 2000/3000 series seems like overkill for that reason.

EDIT: My current GPU is a Radeon RX 470. Can handle LoL (obviously), Overwatch, Rocket League, but not Warzone.

Pc randomly restarts when playing games

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:04 PM PST

I've had this problem for probably around 2ish years. My pc would just randomly turn off when playing games like d2, valorant, apex basically any game. it would reboot at random times sometimes it would be 5 minutes into a game or 6 hours but it never failed to. i've replaced countless parts and it just never worked.

my old specs were: gtx 1060 6gb i7 8700 tuf z370 plus gaming mb 16gb ram evga 600w psu coolmaster cpu cooler

my new specs: rtx 2060 super 8gb i7 8700 tuf z370 plus gaming mb 3200mhz corsair vengeance 16gb ram cx 750m corsair psu noctua dh15 cpu cooler samsung 1tb 960 evo and a 500gb m.2 ssd nzxt h150 case

i have tried basically everything. I've replaced key parts and made sure the connections are clean and clicked in properly. Clean wiped windows on a ssd. talked with multiple people and they all say it's my psu but i had this issue before with my 600w psu and when i replaced it the problem went away for awhile and it came back. have done multiple stress tests and it doesn't crash then. whenever it did reboot, in crash logs it would just say it shut down unexpectedly and not help me at all. please if anyone could help me i'd greatly appreciate it.

update: was just playing a valorant comp game and my pc just froze this time and made this buzzing noise and then when i turned it off it kept blue screening and would launch up a few times in desktop but then jusy wouldn't respond anymore:)))

I figured out why my PC kept turning off while editing/transcoding/rendering video...

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 11:23 AM PST

I went through and tested everything as systematically as possible. I upgraded to a 1000w PSU (from a 650) since I figured hey, it's shutting down it must be the power supply. Also stress tested the CPU, GPU, Ram, etc. Turns out I was close with the PSU, but not quite correct. Turns out the power stages on the MB itself were getting too hot. I solved the problem with a small fan blowing on the little heatsinks. Now I can set it to render and not have to worry about it shutting down on me. Specs are:

    CPU: Ryzen 9 3950x

    GPU: EVGA GTX 1080

    MB: Asrock b450m/ac

    Memory: 32gb (4x8) Oloy warhawk 3200 Cas 18 ram

PSU: Seasonic Focus 1000w Gold (was EVGA 650G+)

Case is a Thermaltake cube mATX which fits under my coffee table nicely.

I probably don't need the PSU upgrade after all, but I'm just going to eat that one even though it is definitely oversized for this rig. I used to have a R5 2600 in it which is why I chose the 650w originally. Oh well, lesson learned and now I am future proof in that department.
