Is there an archive? The old reviews are still reliable :/ Damn... I loved that site. But ever since they stopped reviewing PSUs we should have known that the day would be coming.

Sneak peak at Intel's Ice Lake Server (ICL-SP) Performance vs. Milan

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 04:22 PM PST

Here's a closer look at Ice Lake Server's true performance via LeakBench

    Ice Lake System Specs

    • 2 processors, with 36 cores / 72 threads each = 72 cores, 144 threads
    • 54MB L3 cache x 2
    • 252 GB DDR4
    • Geekbench 5 ST Score: 1169
    • Geekbench 5 MT Score: 42724

This appears to be the top-SKU for a 2P system from Intel.

Compared to Milan 64c in a 1P system (2x Intel Top SKU vs AMD Top SKU):

[For the purpose of this comparison, single-thread performance is ignored, as servers that make use of many cores usually run continuously at base frequency]

    • ICL-SP is running at 2.2ghz base, 3.6ghz boost, whereas Milan is running at 2.0ghz base, 3.2ghz boost
    • Both systems have the same amount of memory installed (252GB reported)
    • ICL-SP has a ~10% performance advantage from having 12.5% more cores
    • Core-for-core, ICL-SP is 6.6% slower than Milan in MT performance
    • Core-for-core and clock-for-clock (base clock), ICL-SP is 17.3% slower than Milan in MT performance

    Power Usage:

    • TDP for ICL-SP top SKU is rumoured to be 270W each, or 540W total, vs 280W for Milan
    • Perf/Watt for ICL-SP is 83 points per Watt, Milan is 153 points per Watt
    • Milan is 84% more efficient, for 10% less performance

It's pretty clear to see why we should expect demand to be very high for Milan parts. Wherever power efficiency matters, Milan is the clear winner.

It's important to note that 270W for ICL-SP is a rumour. This could not be the case. But even if the top SKU for Intel were 200W (a very optimistic number IMHO), that would still peg Milan at 35% more efficient for 10% less performance. What's surprising to me is that it seems like we're not seeing huge efficiency gains from the new 10nm node from Intel. But we have yet to see real TDP figures so this is all conjecture for now.

Let me know what you guys think of this kind of analysis. Or if any other comparisons can be made (AMD 2x 32c vs Intel 2x36c?)

    120hz on 60hz panel?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 12:48 AM PST

Hope someone came help. I purchased an 8k lg nano95 (yes I know oled or 900h is better) and from what I can tell it has a 50hz/60hz panel. however I was wondering why the tv is able to get a 4K 120hz signal. It has hdmi 2.1 and both the Xbox series x and PS5 say it supports 120hz on it, games even change the refresh rate and I can confirm it is receiving a 120hz signal through the free sync menu. Is it getting a 120hz signal and just refreshing at 60hz? I am guessing the EDID is telling it that it can display/accept 120hz. Also worth noting I don't think I can tell the difference when switching aside from the drop is resolution. Any techies in here know the deal?
